Handel concedes to Deal

AP

Nathan Deal smiles during remarks at a Republican Unity Breakfast in Atlanta that brought together winners and losers from the Republican primaries Wednesday, August 11, 2010.

Well, it looks like we're not headed to another overtime in the GOP gubernatorial race in Georgia, after all. Palin-backed Karen Handel has conceded to Gingrich/Huckabee-backed Nathan Deal.

From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

In a statement just released from the Handel campaign, she said she called Deal this morning to concede the nomination. The November ballot is now set. Deal will represent the GOP and face Democrat Roy Barnes and Libertarian John Monds.

Earlier Wednesday, Deal appeared at a GOP "unity breakfast" in Buckhead, but Handel did not. But her statement this morning is clearly aimed at healing a party battered by months of a tough primary campaign and a brutal three-week runoff. Barnes, meanwhile, cruised to victory over six other opponents in the Democratic primary. While other Democrats, particularly House Minority Leader DuBose Porter, D-Dublin, took their shots at Barnes, that contest never reached the level of contention the GOP race.

*** UPDATE *** NBC's Domenico Montanaro writes that Democrats feel more confident against Deal than Handel with former Gov. Roy Barnes (D) running. But the Republican Governors Association fires back in an e-mail to First Read that Barnes has his own baggage. Spokesman Mike Schrimpf writes:

"Roy Barnes is now on his fourth campaign for governor. Georgia voters have already rejected Roy Barnes in two out of three attempts to win the governor's office while his lone victory ended in a major case of buyer's remorse. But as bad as his record was during his lone term, he managed to make it even worse after leaving office. There is lots and lots of information that can be use against him."

The race is now likely a toss up.

Come on guys! If Bennet would have lost, your headline would have been "Obama's candiate looses." How come this headline isn't "Palin's candidate looses". Your bias is showing...

Lyn, KCMO:

You called it there Lyn. But be that as it may, the folks at First Read already know that Palin is a big loser in many ways.

I was wondering the same thing Lyn!

For weeks the MSNBC crew has been on a 'Palin picks the winner' parade... and now... not a peep!

Too funny!

I swear I've seen the headline "Obama losing streak ends" somewhere around here the past day or so.

Mark, Domenico and Chuck:

Is it ever disconcerting that mediocre amateur posters have your profession so completely figured out?

By the way, did you know that "Palin's candidate" lost? The candidate even conceded, when it was so close a recount could have been requested.

Just thought you'd like to know. People here are complaining and I don't think they know it yet.

I wonder if they were serving "irony" at this "unity" breakfast, as Handel was absent?

All we've heard for the last several months is how wonderful Sarah has picked soooooo many winners! Where are they?

You guys are unreal. You use the least significant human being in politics to make hay and no matter what the President does it's a qualified response from you. First off, she shouldn't even be mentioned in political circles, as she's certainly no pol. She's an entertainer with her eyes set on any prize that will afford her more riches and more notoriety. The fact that she has any influence on anyone is due to the fact that she gets all the press she needs from you guys.

By the way, I hope some of you were watching morning joke this morning, to see the fair-handed treatment of my new hero Anthony Weiner. As usual, egotistical Joke could not allow Anthony to finish answering a questions, which is nothing more than the usual Republican way of having a "discussion" - one-sided of course, with Joe's egomaniacal sputterings and rantings. Thank god for someone like Anthony Weiner who stood up for 9/11 workers when it counted. To hell with the processes that the repubs want to quibble over. Just freaking do it. And I sorely wish that Joe and Mika would be gone and all their pals including Pat Buchanan who is nothing but a not-so-closeted racist.

Buchanan came out of his racist closet a few years ago! MSNBC knows what he is and still tolerates his comments (I suppose in an effort to show the other side)!

Buchanan is what he is.....a very old angry man. During the general election in 08, he had a complete meltdown on a subject of race. My girl Rachel denounced him with valid counterpoints to everything he said.

Yet, Buchanan is still on the payroll. I tune out when I hear him!

        Cathy M.;

I agree. Anthony Weiner is a go getter and he does not take prisoners. We need more like him. Joe and his gaggle of over the hill clowns should be replaced by dancing bears. They would bring about as much content but they do not talk.

I stop by there in the AM just to see what nonsense they have for the day. Joe cuts everybody off. If you note, this is a Republican mind set, if you have nothing to say, interrupt the speaker and say it loud.

Part of the media's problem and its love for Palin, is its underlying fascination with beauty and the beast, brawn vs intelligence, David vs Goliath. Those things usually make for great drama and media hype. Their obsession is not based on her ability as a thought leader. If that were the case she'd be rightly dismissed as a dunce worthy of passing mention in the gossip section a long time ago. But it all demonstrates how the media contributes to idiocy or at least fails to encourage thoughtful dialog which also contrbutes to the dumbing-down of America and our laughable 12th place on the worldwide education chart! Evidence of its impact is clearly visible on this blog every day by the Palin-lovin', Tea Bagging, Republican dittoheads and the sheer nonsense they espouse as fact. Please God, Bless America...with smarter people!

          Mad,

You have pointed out what I have said before that today's "mainstream" media is more tabloid than the once reliable sources of news they used to be. Unfortunately reliable doesn't sell and gossip, lies, and tabloid yellow journalism does. When people stop buying that crap they will straighten up but just like a fatal auto accident we hate to see the gore but can't help but rubber neck as we pass it.

I guess Sarah learned something she should have already known - Mama Grizzlies ain't so tough.  Anybody with $500 to rent a helicopter and rifle can blow away a Mama Grizzly quite easily.  As an Alaskan, she should know that.  Her or her family have probably blown away a few themselves.  This idea she is presenting of the Grizzly Bear being an unstoppable killing machine is idiotic.  Maybe if ya unexpectedly ran into one in the woods, but if she runs into a hunter with a gun, 10 times out of 10 that bear is dead in 5 seconds, no matter how high on her hindquarters she stands.  Within a day, that Mama Grizzly and her cubs will be resting in the stomach juices of some rich bastard who knows they'll let you kill anything on 4 legs in Alaska, as long as you've got the hunting fee to add to the state's slush fund.
