Former Rep. Rostenkowski dead at 82

Former Illinois Rep. Dan Rostenkowski has died, NBC News confirmed Wednesday.

Rostenkowski died peacefully at his home in Wisconsin this morning, a close friend told WMAQ. He was 82.

Rostenkowski served in Congress from 1959 to 1995 and wielded the gavel as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee for 11 years. A corruption scandal ended his 42-year career in public service. He pleaded guilty to charges of mail fraud in 1996 and spent 15 months in federal prison.

In 2000, he was pardoned by President Bill Clinton in the final days of Clinton's presidency.

Dan Rostenkowski was a great guy, he knew how to bring home the bacon. imporvements at Ohare airport, money for the kennedy and ryan expressways. he went down in shame but that will never compair to what he did for chicago and the state.

Dan you will be missed.

Back in the 80's we used to summer on the same private lake in WI as Rep. Rostenkowski!

The man always had a smile on his face... not to mention a wicked sense of humor!

Thoughts & prayers to the family and friends of Dan!

There are other politicians like Rostenkowki, whose careers ended in scandal, that can't be judged totally by what they did at their lowest points. Even Ted Stevens, a frequent target of derision from the left in recent years, had some substantial accomplishments for his state as his legacy that didn't get discussed much until after his tragic death. To paraphrase Shakespeare, the good that men and women do shouldn't be interred with their bones.

ROstenkowki was a bum like the other members of the house who are still there. WHAT GOod Job?? They are spending our money for What? Things haven't gotten any better for the citizens and the poor are even in worse shape. The congress people have made out quite well. There health care and retirement benefits have gotten steadily better. How can they start out making a hundred grand a year and retire as millionaires like the BIG "R" unless they are stealing our money. Chew on that for a while.

Houston,

That's a good thought, remember the good people do, and try to give them the benefit of the doubt on the not so good.

Keet, get a grip, the man died.

Frank - what a sad pathetic post. I hope for your sake that people don't critique your life under a microscope. If so, I doubt you'll be found to be stellar. Most of us wouldn't. The way a person lives their life - in total - has to be considered when defining them. And, most of us shouldn't be judging anyone.

Here is another Democrat that imbeded himself in politics and cheated the public he was supposed to be representing. Why do they think they are above the law and why does the public keep voting them into office. And we shouldn't judge them even though they admitted their guilt we need to leave that to a higher power. After all everyone gets their comupense in the end.

he must be a dem, if it's in the article, it's buried. had a republican's carrer ended in scandal, he would've been identified as such in the headline or soon after, then the scandal rehashed over and over. bias, what bias?

Just like Charlie Rangel, this man was a complete crook. Typical pol. His legacy is why Chicago, the state of Illinois and the US are so screwed up. Steal money, do favors for your friends, the costs to the taxpayers be damned. The only good thing he did was the 1986 tax reform act with Ronald Reagan.

Try researching. The Congressional Post Office Scandal was about Rostinkowski and other Democrats writing Congressional Checks for HUGE amounts of money to buy a very few stamps, then taking the remaining huge amounts of Change and spending it on himself and his friends. Dems were the Majority for over 40 years, so it was easy with Tipp O'Neal as the Scoundrel in Charge. Not Tame, in any way or time.

he was from Chicago, soo guess what he was, a Democrat, we don't allow republicans in the Chicago city limits to represent us in congress or the senate, as you can see what they are doing now, saying NO to everything. it just does not work for US. i know i will get flack for that but her statement was political, the man has passed this is no time for politics, tea baggers or way right righties. but i will say this, his congressional district voted for the republican candidate back in 1983 when democrat harold washington (first black mayor) was running.

It is a tragedy just like Stevens. Even though democrats on the vine were wishing he had died sooner and wished that Palin was on the plane. My thoughts and prayers go out to both families.

I think Karen asked because it seems left out intentionally. It's almost normal if a republican is charged or accused that the media plaster it all over the place that he or she was a republican. Maybe the auther wants readers to deceitfully see rep. as republican and not representative. I DON'T Know.

@Jeff.. Tell me why they wouldn't elect a Republican? Since Chicago has been full of corruption since it was established and democrats and liberals have always run that city. Look at blago.. enough said. You have been wired and twisted by television and the media.

Then I feel I need to support that in the prominent media, the liberal media the D is always left off it seems when it is a Democrats. More important today though is the over all flavor of this thread compared to the Stevens plane crash. The Stevens crash thread was venomous and down right ugly compared to this today. I feel it's a difference in the people. A common difference between Republicans and Democrats who tend to have this seathing anger.

blago was just plain stupid, he knew the feds were on to him and he tried to sell the seat any way, whats funny is that blago is from the same ward Dan Rostenkowski repersented. say what you want about chicago, the city is clean, the lake front is beautiful, the sky line is only second best to new york. you still have the ethnic neighborhoods.

Find me one example of an AP article about a Republican that died, where they failed to introduce any negative stories, inuendos or outright unsupported lies and I'll concede your point. Did you see Reagan's obit from these guys??? How about Stevens?? This guy Rostenkowski was found guilty of fraud and theft in office. he was pardoned by Clinton and the AP doesn't even list his Party and you think it's the American Voters that are wrong in asking why???

Redhead, I'm guessing that Tom might get some of his news from MSNBC/NBC news - BECAUSE THAT IS WHERE WE ARE POSTING!

Jeff - No its called making sure the graff is spread evenly. what the 1st ward gets the 50th ward gets, thats how chicago works, remember chicago is called the city that works.

I do not call Chicago "The City that Works." I've always called Chicago "The Windy City." The difference is that I call it that because of the politicians, not the weather.

Karen, I'll give you the benefit of doubt that you must be young... he was a Democrat, and everyone at the time knew full well what party he belonged to.  Do you really think, given the ethics charges been processed against two Democratic members of Congress, given the impeachment and ongoing trial of Gov. Blagojevich, and given the conviction of William Jefferson of Louisiana  that the media habitually omits the party affiliations solely for the benefit of Democrats?  Granted, there's plenty of corruption to go around, but I think it is rather incredulous to claim that the media is hiding Democratic party affiliations....

Dr. Buzz, With an election around the proverbial corner and the Dems being in great peril of losing the Congress and the house, yes I think it is politics are on. All is fair in love and war and nobody is any better at the little tactics that can win or loss something this large than The Democrats.

Dr. Buzz, Thank you for your observation of this; Both of the parties have faults, and each will get what he can when he can. My personal observation, neither one can throw stones, because each party lives in glass houses. The Republicans, commenting here, obviously do not read the papers, or, are just so full of "S" with stupidity, they ignore what they read. The only thing of interest here, is to offer condolences to the man's family and friends. We can all fight about our parties another day.....

No Mary we read your news papers and then some other sources and then, now hold on this one may throw you, then we think about it and make up our own minds. Isn't that amazing?

Just because you say you think and make up your own mind, over and over again, doesn't make it true. My Father-in-Law makes the same claim while parrotting down to the exact word whatever bs is coming from O'Reilly or Beck that week.

The trolls today are no better than the trolls yesterday on Ted Stevens. Combined you are the worst this country has to offer, so entrenched in your narrow opinion that you smile and rejoice when your opponents die for whatever reason, even long after they no longer have any impact your life. You even have to take it online to show people how happy it makes you, how sad. Both leftie and rightie extremes need to go.

Hey Dr. Buzz, with all the articles of AP Writers, along with MSNBC, CNN and The NYTs all saying they tried to sway elections towards Democrats and help Obama push through Health Care, it's no wonder they question this writer about omitting Rostinkowski's party affiliation. They know they're trying to help their buddies in the Dem Party from looking worse than they already do, just before this upcoming election!

Of course Rostenkowski was a Democrat. Clinton would not have pardoned a Republican. Do we have an up to date count of how many Illinois politicians are now in or recently released from the House of Many Doors? Ignore Blago for the moment. The jury is still out.

It was one of those days where the "comments collapsed by the community" ruled the day.

Since there was no D next to his name, you can assume that he was a democrat. If he'd been a republican, it would have been stated not just as an R but spelled out in full, so you cannot for a minute doubt that only repubs are crooks. The Washington Post iss great at doing this; when they were called on the carpet for it, they buried the D in the continuation of the story on another page. Isn't this a great country or what?

It was precisely because he would cut deals and violate principle that he went to prison. What we need in our politicians is unwavering honesty and devotion to principle. What we get is the kind of crooked wheeler dealers who bring shame on our Congress and ruin to our Nation. The issue isn't right or left, the issue is right or wrong.

Couldn't agree more on honesty and principle, but those do not exclude working with your fellow person. What we see is devotion to party or idealogy, honesty and principle be damned. Some people mistake being ornery and unwavering on relatively petty items as being 'principled'. When that happens, nothing gets accomplished. That goes for both parties.

So you're saying it's okay to be corrupt if you're a democrat, but not if you're a republican?

Because of course, the democratic corruption is "for the people", whereas the republican corruption is "for big business".

Do you have any idea how gullible you sound?
