All of Houston voting machines destroyed in fire

This is certainly going to spark some conspiracy theories in the competitive Rick Perry-vs.-Bill White gubernatorial contest in Texas. Harris County is Houston, where White was mayor and where his base should come from on Election Day.

The Houston Chronicle reports:

Harris County Clerk Beverly Kaufman this morning said she is confident of timely, clean elections in November, even as a fire that destroyed the county's entire inventory of 10,000 electronic voting machines still burned.

Kaufman urged voters to cast their ballots early to help the county cope with a possible shortage of equipment on election day.

"Because I don’t expect to have 10,000 pieces to work with, no matter what we do, I’m sure that we’re going to be putting on a full court press urging people to vote early," Kaufman said.

[snip]

Houston Fire Department spokesman Patrick Trahan said arson investigators were at the scene of the fire, but no cause has been determined.

The three-alarm blaze started about 4:15 a.m. at the football field-size warehouse the county uses to store its election equipment. Firefighters extinguished the flames about four hours later.

That really is awful especially this close to an election. Mark Murray is right--the conspiracy theories will be flying.

Of course they will. Everyone in Houston knows it was a democrap. The libs know their party has cut it's own throat and can't stand the thought of losing in November.

Oooooo, such language!! Mommy, protect me from the scary right winger!

Aww, crap! Mom's dead and ol libwatcher just ain't that scary.

The libs know their party has cut it's own throat and can't stand the thought of losing in November.

Interesting perspective since the Republicans have a lower approval rate than the Democrats and are less trusted with the economy than the Democrats.

@libwatcher: It's funny you presume to know which way the people of Houston will swing.

Do you live here? Do you keep your thumb on the pulse of local trends and viewpoints? Or do you lump everyone in Texas (as most people across the state tend to) with pre-conceived stereotypes about us?

Yeah, Bill's a Democrat. Yeah, I have a major beef with him - but that stems from his hands-off approach to the disparity suffered by the homeless and mentally ill down here, his cave-in on the installation of red-light cameras around town and his refusal to crack-down on the corruption in HISD - not his economic policies.

Houston fares a hell of a lot better financially than comparable metropolitan areas, and Bill was mayor from 2004 until this past election year, right when the oft-championed rejection of liberal politicians across the nation was starting to ramp up.

Also, if Houston hates Democrats, the hell did we just pust Annise Parker in office for? Christ, man, she's a lesbian, to boot.

Get your damn facts in order.

I'm sorry you have to live on the outskirts of of a giant mall. Really, I am. Look at me weeping for you. But somehow I don't think anyone in Katy has any idea of what's going on beyond who's @!$%#ing who's cattle.

And save the generational smack-talk for the actual newcomers, 'tardo.

Count me in for a conspiracy theory. I felt the same way about the Dems Linclon - Halter contest in Arkansas since Blanche Lincoln is really a Republican with democratic stripes. 38 Polling places in one county were closed at the last minute some people had to drive a half an hour and to vote; plus wait too. I just so happened that county was heavily in favor of BILL Halter.

I wonder if this the beginning of Texas seceding the Union? Just kidding.

I find it lulzy that you'd think I agree with the text book changes just because I happen to live in Texas. You're kind of an idiot, aren't you?

From the Houston Chronicle, August 25, 2010

Harris County Tax Assessor Collector Leo Vasquez accused a nonprofit group of submitting thousands of bogus voter registration applications in recent months in what he said appears to be a campaign to taint the voter rolls.

Vasquez said his office has received thousands of duplicate applications, including cases in which the office has received six applications for the same person. Other irregularities he cited in the more than 25,000 applications submitted by Houston Votes include cases of underage applicants and people who identified themselves as noncitizens.

"The integrity of the voter roll of Harris County, Texas, appears to be under an organized and systematic attack by the group operating under the name Houston Votes," Vasquez said.

The group is the voter registration arm of Texans Together, which works to increase civic participation in low-income neighborhoods.

          Two days later . . .

There's a nice conspiracy. So what are you saying that a cover-up is going on? Someone trying to hide an ACORN style registration policy? I bet it was ACORN how about that one?

Ok it was the Black Panther Party voter intimidation.

Oh here's one it was an accident.

Whatever happened the people of Harris County must deal with it and still perform there civic duty and vote their conscious

I'm just trying to fan the flames of conspiracy and gin up the rhetoric.

Yup, and I wonder if this is the same arsonist that torched the Texas Gov Mansion over 2 years ago.

Since that time, Hairspray Perry has been living high on the hog in a rental mansion above Austin (don't know who owns that property---but no doubt one of his cronies). Texans have to foot the bill for $10,000+ a month plus utilities, pool, etc. The ever running total for the last two years is almost $600,000. Why in the hell hasn't the Mansion been repaired in over two years and Perry get back to the rent free Mansion?

You betcha, I also smell a conspiracy!
