The first lady hits the stump

The more popular half of the White House’s first couple is hitting the campaign trail.

Michelle Obama, who has largely avoided political events this midterm cycle, is slated to hold rallies and fundraisers for Democratic Senate candidates in seven states over the next two weeks, including stops in Illinois, Colorado, and Wisconsin.

Obama campaigned extensively for her husband during the 2008 presidential race, although her individual appearances were generally low-key, featuring intimate roundtable events and discussions about specific policy issues like support for military families. The upcoming tour of midterm battleground states -- Illinois, Colorado, Wisconsin, New York, Washington, Connecticut, and California -- will be her most extensive foray into campaign politics for more than two years.

The first lady remains much more popular than her husband nationwide. An NBC/WSJ poll in August showed less than one in five respondents saying they have a negative view of Mrs. Obama.

She is particularly popular with women, African Americans and other core Democratic voters – constituencies that could be crucial in tight Senate races nationwide. According to the NBC/WSJ poll, 57 percent of female respondents have a positive impression of Michelle Obama, compared to just 43 percent of men. Comparatively, just 48 percent of women view Barack Obama in a positive light.

Michelle Obama also performs better than her husband now with suburban voters and retirees.

But a downside for Obama could be that her fans – not unlike 2008 Obama voters as a whole – simply aren’t all that motivated to vote in November. Almost 60 percent of Michelle Obama supporters expressed relatively low interest in the midterm elections when they were surveyed in August.

Democrats are hoping that the first lady can turn those numbers around.

On Wednesday, Mrs. Obama will appear on behalf of Democratic Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias, who is vying to win the seat that the first lady’s husband occupied for four years. Giannoulias was bullish on Sunday about the energy that the first lady’s upcoming appearance in her own home state could inject into the race, telling reporters that his campaign office had been flooded with calls from supporters since the news of her visit was announced.

Giannoulias trailed GOP Rep. Mark Kirk by just one point in a Suffolk University poll earlier this month. In that poll, women favored Giannoulias by about 43 percent to 36 percent, with about 12 percent undecided.

Pam Monetti, the co-president of a group called Illinois Democratic Women, said that the first lady’s visit will help to elevate Giannoulias’s stance on women’s issues as well as economic policies that would help struggling families.

“She’s a mom,” said Monetti. “A lot of women voters see that she faces the same things that we face.”

On Thursday, the first lady will appear in Denver, Colorado, at an event for incumbent Democrat Michael Bennet. Bennet is in a difficult race against Tea Party-backed candidate Ken Buck, who defeated establishment GOP favorite Lt. Gov. Jane Norton in the Aug. 10 primary. The incumbent Democrat himself overcame a tough primary challenge from Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff.

Bennet has been consistently behind in polling since late summer, although recent automated telephone surveys have shown the race tightening slightly to about a five point margin.

A former superintendent of Denver public schools, Bennet was mostly unknown in the state when he was appointed to replace Sen. Ken Salazar – who became Obama’s Secretary of the Interior – in 2009. In ads, Buck has portrayed Bennet as a “rubber stamp for his friends in Washington.”

Democrats hope that Obama’s appearance could serve to inject some publicity into the campaign just a few days after early voting began in the state. “Our mail-in ballots dropped today, and this starts our get out the vote effort,” said Pat Waak, the chair of the Colorado Democratic Party. “Having Michelle come into a state where she’s extremely popular will energize voters to get them to fill out their ballots.”

Waak says that female voters in the state are particularly wary of Buck’s policy proposals. “They are very concerned about health care reform, which [Buck] wants to repeal,” she said. “They’re looking for very specific economic policies – Buck doesn’t have any.”

But the presence of any national Democratic surrogate could be risky in a state where the president’s approval rating among likely voters was just 39 percent in a McClatchy/Marist poll last month.

Professor Kenneth Bickers, who heads the political science department at the University of Colorado at Boulder, says that the presence of any figure associated with unpopular Washington D.C. could backfire for the Democratic candidate.

“Bennet has been trying to not nationalize the Senate race,” Bickers said, noting that the appointed senator has been trying to focus on state-specific issues. “But having Michelle Obama, or the president, or any another national figure out here serves to nationalize the race. To the extent that’s happening, it’s helping Buck, not Bennet.”

The First Lady is such an inspiration for ALL women!

I really didn't have anything against Laura Bush other than the fact she climbed into bed every night with the Clown in Chief!

The only thing she inspired was that it was acceptable to enable stupidity!

I meant Sharon is a stump. As in, dead remains of a dead tree. "first lady hits stump" - get it? Acutally, I didn't mind most first ladies. With the strong exception of Nancy Regan. Uppity old gal, she was.

See its these generalized overstated stupid comments like "The first lady is an inspiration to ALL women" that lose the credibility of your readers.

I'm a woman and I'm not inspired by her? Why should I be? What has she done that's inspiring? Become the first black skinned presidents wife? Wow ...

I'm inspired by great people - not the color of their skin, nor who they're married to.

I seem to remember that Jefferson had a black common-law wife in the White House bedroom ... does that mean I'm to be inspired by her too, because I'm a woman?

The First Lady is such an inspiration for ALL women!

So, all taxpayers should pay for all women to have 40+ personal assistants?

You are so out of touch with reality red-head it isn't funny.

Funny, I when I read the headlines, I thought it referred to something Mr Obama might be showing.

The first lady is a joke.

To back her husband's partial birth abortion policy, in my view will never make her a mother at all, much less human.

Sucking the brains out of babies as they are being delivered (and if they survive, they just leave them to die on a table or in a closet) isn't my idea of an inspiration to anyone.

If this is YOUR inspiration Feisty Red Head, you need some serious help. It's murder, plain and simple.

The Obama's are resposible for over 50,000 children murdered legally in the US.

Carole -

No one - except you - brought up anything about race. Michelle Obama was a graduate of Princeton and Harvard Law and a successful career woman before she ever met Barack Obama. She's raising two beautiful children and managing to give them as close to a normal childhood as possible within the glare of the Washington spotlight. She's gracious, funny, well-spoken, and unlike a number of female candidates this year, is not afraid to do interviews and answer tough questions.

If you choose not to find anything in that to admire, that's your privilege. But do yourself a favor and leave your blatant racism out of it.

Everyone has skin... no matter what color... which is why I find you bringing up that hers happens to be black as not even a thinly veiled attempt to hide your racism!

So far she's planted a garden, taken quite a few friends on vacation, wants to put veggies in kids school lunches, helped her husband spend a lot of taxpayer dollars for gatherings in our White House, not real inspiring to me, what am I missing?

Well THAT is very telling! Somehow, I don’t think this is what Michelle had in mind when they asked her to travel. The campaign trail is certainly not the lavish trip to Spain she is used to. They probably promised her another vacation after she is done trying to drum up support for their failing party, but I don’t think SHE is the one that can pull it off.

No I'm not at all biased nor am I prejudiced. See what bringing up FACTS can do to radical, even "feisty" hotheads? The whole point was that in all of my thorough research of the Presidential candidates, including Obama's book, I found nothing noteworthy about Michelle. So what if she's a mom, or even a good mom. there are millions of us who are. That's nothing noteworthy, that's just being normal.

So what if she has college degrees? Millions and millions of people do. For me to be inspired, someone needs to STAND OUT. Be exceptional. Since I've already achieved the exact stats as Michelle, what is there about her to inspire me? (other than. I'm not married to the President, nor am I the first black First Lady. (neither of those are inspiring to me).

So you've chosen to 'jump' all over and try and make an issue about a non-issue.

Rather than address what I was commenting on - the gross generalizations and the endless chants of "If I think it, its got to be true. And if you disagree, there's something wrong with you." mantra of some narrow minded liberals.

Your error was in lumping me in with your "ALL" women comment.

Of all the women that responded to the poll, only 57% found her acceptable. Of those women, 60% said they were not inspired by her to bother voting this time around. In other words, just over half think positively of her and of those nearly two-thirds don't think positively enough of her to vote. The actual number is 34%. The bottom line is that approximately 1 in three may vote. Not very effective use of taxpayer money especially considering how debt ridden the country is already.

But I guess letting her go on the Stump for the Chump trail is better than paying for another boondoggle trip abroad.

Michelle Obama is a fine example of what affirmative action, taken to the extreme, can produce. She is very good at having her hair done, at planning her next vacation, at playing in the garden for the cameras. Certainly as soon as the cameras stopped rolling she ordered the gardeners to take over. Is she attractive...??? Well...no. But she does the best with what money she has available. Millions I'm sure.

The opriginal question was - Is it smart or risky that the First Lady is campaign stumping across seven states?

The answer to that could go either way depending on whom you're asking. However... most would agree that it is costing the taxpayers plenty of what they have little of. The flipside of the flop is that it is extremely comforting to know that the state of this union is in such fine shape that both Obama's can stepout and do what they've shown numerous times in the past, and that is what they seem to be best at - Traveling off on minimal tasks... courtesy of the U.S. taxpayer.

That's a good question! Why are the American taxpayer getting stuck for the cost of all this campaigning by the President and his wife? Seems the Democrat party and the unions should foot that bill. If you see Mr. Obama remember to ask him if the CHICOMs are paying his salary. Since they own a trillion of the nations debt. Ask him to prove they are not doing so...

Check out the 10/2 rally it shows what is planned for our country! True inspiration here.

Michelle Obama is certainly a much bigger target of vituperation, slander, libel, and hatred than almost any other First Lady of memory. Certainly Andrew Jackson's wife was smeared and taunted, while some took pleasure in nasty remarks about Mary Todd Lincoln's overspending, and the ultra-right devoted four decades to dumping dirt on Eleanor Roosevelt - but none were targeted so quickly and viciously as Michelle Obama has been. This cesspool of blog posts certainly makes that point.

The First Lady's role in this nation was really established by two great women, Abigail Adams and Dolly Madison. Eleanor Roosevelt, who often vexed her husband with controversial public positions, was also FDR's "eyes and ears" when out among the public - and she was a powerful, positive advocate for equal rights and equal justice. Jackie Kennedy brought to the White House an air of elegance hardly ever surpassed. Although I had little regard for Bumbler Bush, I found admiration for Laura Bush.

These women, in whose footsteps Michelle Obama travels with her own brand of elegance, were more than helpmeets for their husbands - they were unofficial abassadors for the nation with foreign dignitaries, spokespersons for important causes, and examples to mothers. Michelle Obama well fills that role. Like Laura Bush before her, Mrs. Obama is a strong advocate of literacy. She has served admirably, before going to the White House, in ledership of charitable foundations.

Her participation in the election campaign is to be expected. And she will be received in many places with admiration and respect. That the die-hard regressives, haters, and perhaps simply jealous indulge in the kind of screed above is no surprise, it has happened before. And what a pity.

A: No, with very few exceptions. The first $250,000 in profit from the sale of a personal residence won’t be taxed, or the first $500,000 in the case of a married couple. The tax falls on relatively few — those with high incomes from other sources.

If this president signed a bill that instantly added fifty cents to every gallon of gas bought in this country...his defenders would insist that he did not increase taxes at all....the "greedy' oil companies, they'd insist, were ripping off the consumers once more.

The president's 'plan' is to force businesses to be his tax collectors...and he can once again claim that he did not increase taxes on anyone.

Money gone because of government policy is money gone all the same.

Last night and all day today I have watched the Chilean miners being rescued and the pride and unity expressed by the country. And what a heart wrenching and heart warming event it has been to watch.

Whenever I see Michelle Obama, I am reminded of her comment, "I have never been proud of this country".

I feel sad for the USA and jealous of Chile.

Look at it this way Little Joe Peep,

It's a given that the Dems are going to lose many seats this election. So I look at this "sending Michelle out to do some campaigning" as a face saving move on Barrack's part. When they lose, as they surely will, the pundits can claim that they would have won if The great one had been there instead of just his wife. Sour Grapes rationalization.

sjsMeMe: Brilliant statement! You hit her just right! Isn't it interesting that now they're even sending "Mrs. MARXIST" to replace her TOXIC Marxist spouse? She is so irrelevant and very, very LATE to the party.

They send Bill Clinton (but not Hillary?)

They send Moo Moo Mooch-elle... but Not her Marxist spouse?

Moo Moo Moo-chelle and her TOXIC spouse ONLY go to "very safe Democrat strongholds" too?

Nov 2nd, 2010: Judgment Day = Massive Democrat & RINO Republican defeat... a political "bloodbath" for the status quo socialists in Washington, when MARXIST Obama becomes a seriously wounded Lame Duck for his last 24 months in office.

Nov 6th, 2012: Judgment Day, Phase 2, when MARXIST Obama gets FIRED!

Jan20th, 2013: New American Independence Day, when millions of Americans laugh, Cheer and Jeer as Marxist Obama departs Washington DC for good. On that day, millions and millions of Americans will chant and sing words from Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.:

America is FREE of Marxist Obama at last!

House Majority Still Uncertain, Republicans Say
By JEFF ZELENY and CARL HULSE
Published: October 2, 2010

WASHINGTON — Republicans carry substantial advantages as they move into the final month of the fall campaign, but the resilience of vulnerable Democrats is complicating Republican efforts to lock down enough seats to capture the House and take control of the unsettled electoral battleground.

By now, Republicans had hoped to put away a first layer of Democrats and set their sights on a second tier of incumbents. But the fight for control of Congress is more fluid than it seemed at Labor Day, with Democrats mounting strong resistance in some parts of the country as they try to hold off a potential Republican wave in November.

The chances of a Republican takeover in the House remain far greater than in the Senate, according to a race-by-race analysis by The New York Times. But enough contests remain in flux that both parties head into the final four weeks of the campaign with the ability to change the dynamic before Election Day.

You ought try it; punk. I hope the day comes you'll have to choose between eating out the garbage can or choosing government stamps designed for you by the Republican Master Plan. You know the one the says starve the Beast [Americans] and block every peace of the President's agenda. Then we [Republicans] swoop in; take the White House back and start all over. We [republicans] can send jobs all our overseas and richer. It shouldn't matter; we got enough money to last for several lifetimes why should we [republicans] care about honest hard working Americans we ripped of.

Unions have accountability as Pac groups they must divulge their donor. The Chamber of Horror and Karl Rove billionaires don't.So go ahead vote for the GOP/TP that will send your jobs over seas to pay back their secret global partners for foriegners who work lower wages; It'll make us richer .

FYI: the country was bankrupt long before President Obama took over; but, being a righty you can disagree all you want. You'd better hope you greedy dishonest GOP/TP doesn't get in then you'll sign. Oh wait, that's right you want the elephant to slap you in the face.

Our country needs to ban the use of taxpayers money to pay for these kinds of trips. If any elected official wants to endorse the candidates of their choices, that's fine. But to use my hard earned tax dollars to pay for their jaunts is totally unethical, unreasonable, and must be stopped. Republican, Democrat, etc. need to keep their campaigning AWAY from the jobs they're hired to do!

What this reporter is implying and perhaps accurately reporting is that women don't vote for the best candidate ... they vote because Michelle Obama tells them to vote and who to vote for ... is this what you're hearing too? Honestly, after her comment made on television answering the poor little hispanic kids concern that the cops were going to come & haul her Mommy & Daddy away with "we're trying to change that" probably scared that poor kid half to death. At no time did illegal search & seizure come into play in AZ and she should know that.

She should have said they're fine as long as they don't break the law and get investigated just like any other American caught speeding, running red lights, etc or that they could just apply for citizenship.

they vote because Michelle Obama tells them to vote and who to vote for ... is this what you're hearing too?

I still can't get over White House officials overturning that town in TN or wherever that voted to remove party labels from the ballots. The reason given was that the black voters needed to know which one's were Democrat so they knew who to vote for. That has to be the most racist and demeaning things I've ever heard.

The Justice Department’s decision is blatant in its racist, condescending assumptions that:

    • Black candidates are always Democrats;
    • If black candidates are not labeled as Democrats on the ballot, whites will not vote for them;
    • If black candidates are not labeled as Democrats on the ballot, they stand little chance of being elected on their own merit;
    • Black voters always vote for Democrats; and,
    • If candidates are not labeled as Democrat or Republican, blacks won’t know who to vote for

If republican didn't/don't practice racism why do they employ the Southern Strategy? Even hip hop Michael Steele admitted it.

Word press people are stupidly racist. They want to impeach the President because they haven't seen his birth certificate or DNA amongst other stupid reasons. Duhh, take any African American's DNA; you'll see African linage . Take Caucasian DNA and you might find some african linage there too.

Sorry, Dennis, but you are only fractionally correct.

Presidents and their families have to pay the equivalent of first class airfare while campaigning or vacationing on air force one. It is the merest fraction of the actual cost.

Personally, I think that rule should be changed. Presidents should be allowed two fractional vacations, and all other trips should be FULLY reimbursed by the president or his party. The rules should also be tightened so that a quick stop for a speech does not allow them to piggyback a campaign or Fu draining stop. The taxpayers should ONLY be on the hook for the speech part, All of the rest should be the responsibility of the party or president.

After all, we are not supposed to be supporting a temporary monarch, and his or her entourage.

              Alex,

Too bad it's more likely to hurt their chances.

My bad. It's great that it will hurt their chances!

I agree Michelle Obama doesn't inspire me, Mrs. Bush didn't inspire me. My mother inspired me, my grandmothers inspired me. My father especially inspired me. All of these people loved me, and encouraged me to do the best I could in any situation. Because of them, I am the woman I am today. A female with a Masters Degree in Aeronautical Engineering, with a wonderful family and 4 fantastic grandchildren.

I's really proud that the democrats think so much of woman that just because she tells us to we are going to rush right out vote for who she tells us to. And she is not a "mom" just like you and I, she is so far removed from reality that she is blinded by her own commitment to herself. Like her nitwit other half their every word is started with Me, I or Mine.

So big(i mean big, she must eating high on the hog with taxpayers money ) Ms. Obama hits the trail. Just remember people, this is the lady that said:

                  1) she was never proud to be an American. (she changed her mind when she found out the all the free meals and trips she could take being Ms.president)

                  2) that all our children needed to be re-educated and re-taught history. (of course she meant the socialist view point of history)

                  3) this is the lady that took 30 of her BFF's on an all expenses paid( by the taxpayers) trip to Spain

So when you she her or here her remember she is a socialist, has the same re-distribution of wealth ideas as he loser husband and lies.

I do not admire Michelle Obama ....your first statement ..she was never proud to be an American...her values are not my values...

But I do believe that she is a good Mother you can't fake the happiness in those 2 little girls faces

She did not take 30 of her friends to Spain on the taxpayers dime, her friends paid for their own way. We did not pay for her room's at the hotel in Spain. The Obama's paid for that, now I do think she should have stayed here in the US and spent that money, that would really have been the smartest move that the Obama's could have made.

let's not make stuff up, you don't need to they have done so many stupid things!!

                  Nancy -

Who paid for the Secret Service and all of the support staff?

The American taxpayer. And she decided to stop in and pay a call to the Spanish royalty just so that the American taxpayer would have to pick up part of the tab for her stay. You might want to check your facts.

Tammy your correct the taxpayer picked up the tab for the Secret Service and her staff but we would pick up the tab for this no matter where she went.

Don't get me wrong...what she did was really wrong and dumb!! With our economy in the dumpster she should have stayed in the states and stimulated the economy here!

I have no use for her!

The mid term elections matter more than the presidential elections, in terms of how things are done in Washington. I hope she is able to get that message across, but in a favorable way for the Democrats. The Tea Party movement and the Republicans have gotten too radical, and I don't think they will do any better for any of us who make less than $50K a year; including the unemployed.

The hatred, bigotry, misogyny and vitriol in these postings is just unbelievable and makes me sick to my stomach! I don't care who you voted for this type of rant serves no good...consider:

Sometimes, when we are discouraged by a difficult situation, anger does seem helpful, appearing to bring more energy, confidence and determination. And while it is true that anger brings extra energy, it eclipses the best part of our brain: its rationality. So the energy of anger is almost always unreliable. It can cause an immense amount of destructive, unfortunate behavior. Dalai Lama

Dan-405104 you miss my point entirely. Whether you find Ms. Obama's words or actions inspiring or not, is up to you, but to resort to the name calling and nastiness that is displayed in this page only lowers all of us by the lowest common denominator. Maybe Jon Stewart is really on to something with his Rally to Restore Sanity. It's like this country is having a mental breakdown and is in sore need of being committed!

Yes we all know that Jon Stewart would not stoop to such tactics as name calling and nastiness. When you start listening to a comdedian for your politcal guidance you are lowering yourself to tlhe lowest common denominator. Don't talk to loud about being committed. You don't know the difference between an organ grinders monkey and a politician. Going from a spirtitual leader to a comedian is quite a mood swing. Want to say anything else?

It may not be popularity but fear that puts Michelle Obama higher on the list than her husband. If you don't agree with her, those horse teeth could take a big junk out of you.
