From the NBC News political unit
NBC News projects that Republicans will gain a majority in the House.
The new Republican majority means the ouster of Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House, with the likely election of Republican John Boehner of Ohio to replace her in the chamber's highest post. It will put the GOP in charge of the lower chamber. Republicans have pledged to introduce legislation that could partially unwind the reforms passed under the Obama administration.
NBC's projection is that Republicans will hold a 236 to 199 seat advantage in the next House of Representatives. The margin of error is plus or minus 13 seats.
Republicans needed to win 39 seats to regain the majority in the House.
Democrats gained 32 seats in the 2006 cycle and 24 seats in 2008. The GOP wave makes 2010 the third "change" election in as many cycles — only the third time that has happened since World War II.

Thank God!!!!
Why? Who did God vote for?
God wanted pelosi out and she is out so dont cry to much tomm. dems but your precious obuma will have to move a bunch of rep.s to the front of the bus.
What's the over/under on the number of days for John Boehner's celebratory "bender"?
Two words
Grow up
Why? You don't seem to have.
Wonder if Pelosi will drown her sorrows in a sea of botox?
Maybe she'll start a California secession movement....or a Botox Party!
Way to keep it classy Jilly. Is that what they taught you in Law School?
Oh please, newday....lighten up. It was a joke.
Jilly, there is an old saying...if you have to tell people that you were attempting to be funny, you aren't funny. It was disrespectful for you to say, since you are SOOOO above it all, and particularly demeaning for one woman to say about another.
newday, I do believe that you just may have a bit of a crush on me....or at least a mild obsession. The fact that Nancy Pelosi is a woman does not make her immune to criticism. And she does look as though she's had quite a bit of botox. I mean, come one....admit it. Her wide-eyed look of surprise certainly doesn't come naturally. It's akin to making fun of John Boehner's tanning bed habit....right??
Oh, and by the way, it's not MY fault you have no sense of humor. And if you just didn't find it funny, that's fine too. :-)
And "Jilly" is a name that only my friends call me....
Like I said Jilly, for a woman to make a comment like that about another woman tells us much about you. And it says nothing good.
newday, explain to me....what does that comment say about me, exactly?
I'm dying to know.
How exactly is it any different than someone making fun of Boehner's perpetual tan?
Please, newday, enlighten me with your wisdom.
AH, poor Jilly, so at sea with the larger issues. It is just this: I am from that generation of women who fought long and hard so that younger women like you would be taken seriously. Speaker Pelosi has broken through another glass ceiling that will ease YOUR way, and you should be grateful for it. She did that with perseverance, work ethic and intelligence and is owed respect by younger women. She did that at a time when things were not as easy for women as they are for you. Every time a women makes those kind of comments about another, you make it easier for men to do that as well. That you DON'T know that tells me that your upbringing is lacking and you are not as bright as you like to claim. My daughters, (and sons ) know better.
newday, get over yourself. I take great offense to your comments, especially about my upbringing, as that seems to be an insult to my parents, who are amazing. Oh, oh....I get it...it's ok to make fun of a woman like Sarah Palin, but not a woman like Nancy Pelosi....and why is that newday? I don't give respect based solely on a person's gender; I place value on a person's character, and I don't apologize for feeling that Nancy's character is lacking. My opinion of her is just as valid as YOUR opinion of Sarah Palin.
The mere fact that a woman is in a position of power does not necessarily compel respect, newday. I would think that you would understand that.
Poor Jilly, are you bothered by truth? The comments about Palin are factual, having nothing to do with appearance. Or do you not get that difference? You want to make factual criticism about Pelosi, have at it. But, of course, that would be too subtle a difference for you to be able to suss through. As to the comment about upbringing? I stand by it. My children, including my son who has Tourette Syndrome know better. You owe respect to those of us who made the way easy for you. Including Nancy Pelosi.
newday, your concept of the "truth" is nothing more than your idea of the "correct" political beliefs.
I have no respect for Nancy Pelosi because of her grandstanding as the vote for the first TARP bill was being taken in the House...you know, the one in which she abdicated all responsibility for the financial collapse (even though Democrats had been in charge of Congress for the two years prior) and blamed everything on George Bush and the Republicans. Her political posturing, and it was nothing more than that, killed that bill at a time when it was desperately needed. Great leadership and way to put the country ahead of politics, Nancy! Her disgustingly opportunistic actions that day were disgraceful and I lost every shred of respect for her at that very moment.
How's that for factual, newday?
As to my upbringing, my parents did a wonderful job raising me and my siblings, but, I suppose that because you perceive me as not sharing the exact same political beliefs as you (which is probably not exactly true), they must have done something wrong. See, newday, I know my parents did something RIGHT, because I don't discount people just because they may disagree with me politically. I enjoy LEARNING from people who hold different viewpoints from my own, and I believe that this country would be much richer if we would ALL take a moment and LISTEN to each other, instead of systematically drowning out the "noise" of opposition.
So, newday, this "conversation" boils down to this; you think I "owe" respect to Nancy Pelosi because she shares the same reproductive organs as me and is in a position of power. I feel that is not, in and of itself, sufficient to bestow upon someone "respect". The question is, would you be saying the same thing if a woman such as, oh, let's say, Michelle Bachmann, had been named the first female Speaker of the House? If the answer is no, then the next logical question is, of course, why?
And, just for the record, I have the utmost respect for Hillary Clinton.
You owe respect to a woman who helped clear the way for someone like you. I have never found you to be particularly bright, but let's try to reduce this down to the simplest equation that we can. You can challenge ANYONE on belief, or disagree with a vote. If you make a joke about botox, you are over the line. It is demeaning, it makes a woman an object of derision based on appearance, and enough men do that. You have an obligation to be better than that. That is as simple as I can make it, and if you can't get it now, I just don't think there is a way to cause you to get it. And yes, your upbringing does seem to be lacking. This is not something that a stranger over the internet should have to instruct you about.
newday, I have never found YOU to be particularly bright, either, but I suspect that my opinion of you means about as much to you as your opinion about me means to me.
I don't have respect for Pelosi because of the reasons that I mentioned, and I don't feel that I "owe" her any particular amount of respect. I seem to remember a great deal of fuss made about Sarah Palin, aka, "Caribou Barbie" as many of your liberal friends like to call her, and her campaign wardrobe. How exactly was that related to your positions and beliefs?
And besides, weren't you the one saying that the use of the word "whore" was not that big of a deal when it was used against Meg Whitman?
I suppose that we should just agree to disagree at this point.
What I said Jilly that in the context that the word "whore" was used, it was in fact correct and could be used about a man. For example "Roberts is a whore for the Chamber of Commerce." No, we don't agree to disagree, you are, in your immature way, wrong. That is the sum total. There is no right to what you did.
And men can't use botox? Really? And what about Sarah Palin's wardrobe and the nickname "Caribou Barbie"? Give me a break, newday.
Jilly, you do have trouble with feedback, do you not? That "joke" was to demean a woman that you owe respect to. One can be critical of policy or beliefs, when you attack appearances, you are wrong.
Rand Paul is already bought and paid for by Mitch ...hes not change hes more of the same !
God help us all!!
So does this mean the rich will continue with their tax cuts?
The Republican white rich male party won. Nice goin' America.
Sorry Pat. Looks like we're all nazis now. At least until 2 years from now if THAT election is more to your liking. Then you'll be proud to be American again. Until then, suck it up and try not to hate white people too much. Try not to hate people who have more money than you too much. And try not to hate men. Unless, of course, you're a lesbian, but that's a topic for another day.
Can't remember if you're one of the Christian haters on here. If so, try not to hate them too much either.
Pat Boston MA-
Please explain to me this hatred that Democrats have for the rich. I would think earning a college degree, thereby earning a good living would be something to aspire to, rather than something to resent.
People are still voting and you are already calling the races over?
God will be helping us all if we can just get the GOP to control the senate as well.
Seriously,if the GOP controls the senate, too, women, blacks, seniors, gays, latinos and the middle class can kiss their ass good-bye!! Believe it!
STOP with the "politics of fear". In fact, please give me an example for each of the groups you mentioned, and HOW and WHY they will have to "kiss their ass goodbye"....
Do you have any? Are you just talking out of your butt?
God help us all. The GOP will be the death of income for senior citizens and the rich and corporation will rule the world. America is on it's way to have the largest population in the world living in poverty, homeless and hungry.
Maybe NOW we can start paying down the debt!
The night is young. There are three races in my state you have not been paying attention to- and, in all three, the democratic incumbents are losing.
This is getting ugly for the democrats.
That jet that Nancy Pelosi has to use because she's the Speaker of the House...
...will y'all bitch just as much about it when John Boehner uses it?
No.
The wicked witch of the west is now gone! Next to fall is Harry Reid. In 2012, it will be Obama's turn to fall.
Know something we don't know? Last I checked, polls in California are still open and it's highly unlikely Nancy Pelosi's district isn't going to re-elect her so, while she may not be Speaker in 2011, she's really not going anywhere.
She is no longer Speaker, therefore, no power, therefore gone.
I have been reading all week that if Madame Speaker lost the gavel, she would resign. I do not pretend to know how true this is.
I have said for more than a year that she would be re elected, but no longer be speaker. Common wisdom is that former speakers resign because of the loss of power.
Who knows?
Fear won out.
Is that gonna be this year's spin? Fear? It's never the American electorate wanting a change when the Repubs win, is it? Nope. To people like you, the American public goes back and forth between stupid/frightened and smart/sensical depending on who wins. You people are pathetic.
So, Andi, does that explain Obama?
Impeach Obama and his socialist entitlement agenda.. Democratic carnage.. How sweet it is !!
We the people.. we 40% who actually pay income taxes.. will no longer go along for his redistribution agenda... Its called personal responsibility.. Quit whining progessives.. your agenda was resoundly slapped down tonight..
On a separate note.. being a die hard conservative.. Palin is Pathetic.. I am sure I will get much support for that call..
Who in the tea party or gop would cast another vote for her!!
She quit on alaska.. selfish and shameless!
Cant stand her...
BUT ECSTATIC WE TRUE CONSERVATIVES ARE NOW IN CONTROL OF THE HOUSE.. AND HOPEFULLY THE SENATE..
NO MORE ENTITLEMENTS.. NO MORE NANNY STATE.. YOUR KILLING THE ECONOMY..
DO AWAY WITH ALL WELFARE AND FOOD STAMP/BENIFIT PROGRAMS... ESPECIALLY FOR NON US CITIZENS.. IF YOU ARE NOT A CITIZEN.. YOU WILL NOT GET 1 DOLLAR.. YOUR KIDS YOU SNUCK OVER THE BORDER WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TOO GO TOO SCHOOL.. YOU WILL NOT GET HEALTH OR ANY OTHER BENEFIT!! AS IT SHOULD BE..
WE HAVE TOO MANY US CITIZENS HURTING.. NO MONEY FOR LAW BREAKERS.. GO HOME AND LET THEM CARRY YOU.. AS WE THE TAX PAYER REFUSE TOO PAY ONE DOLLAR FOR YOU ILLEGALLY ENTERING OUR COUNTRY!!
Impeach him? On what grounds? Please, show me the "high crime" and/or "misdemeanor" that he has committed?
That is in The Constitution, you know.
That's exactly right. This year, the only qualification to win was to be white and a republican. I wonder if electing a guy like Coates in Indiana has anything to do with pushing out others for being lobbyists or anything. I believe Democrats only hold on the Senate because there's no sign a person of color in there, thus it's not unbearable for some to watch.
Boo hoo hoo. Good question though. With the Dems in control of the Senate these past few years, why weren't there any black senators? And why were there more Blacks and Latinos running this year as Repubs than Dems? And why didn't you libs vote for them if you're so worried about stupid crap like racial balance in Congress?
Who cares about racial imbalance? Unable to bear children, I've adopted an African American son, a hispanic daughter, a Hatian daughter and a Sweedish son. I teach my children that the color of their skin has no bearing on who they are as a person.
I cringe every time my children hear that people are "proud to have a black President". How about speaking of what he stands for, rather than the color of his skin? Strip away the color of his skin and I think you'll see his agenda is very biased - and he hasn't followed through with many of his promises.
Likewise- Senators, Governors and others who've thrown their hat into the political ring, who cares if there isn't a person of "color"? I know it doesn't matter to me, or my children. Rather, we choose to focus on what a person stands for. Perhaps a word of advice.....
Your problem is, you make too much sense. Don't you know there are votes and money in dividing people up among race and ethnicity? The Democrats don't see people as individuals. They see all of us as members of a particular group to be coddled, pandered to, criticized etc...depending on what "group" we belong to and where we sit on the "hierarchy of victimhood" they've created.
Aaaahh, so true.
As a side note, For a long time I thought Democrats hated those with money. Now I see they hate those who have EARNED their money. Those who line up for government handouts can be proud of *their* money.
Pat Boston MA-
Please explain to me this hatred that Democrats have for the rich. I would think earning an college degree, earning a good living would be something to aspire to, rather than something to resent.
Boehner, if you take the time to scroll up and read Pat Boston's comment, instead of arbitrarily making deep statements like "dont be dumb", perhaps you would sound a bit more intelligent.
I was merely asking Pat a question that you have not answered, and have resorted to name calling rather than answering my question.
No need for name calling. Just answer the question.
And another question while you're at it:
Why is it that it's acceptable to poke fun at the "rich white males" but the moment I poke fun at poor black women/ poor hispanic women / etc. etc., I become a racist?
Just asking, seriously, looking for an answer. If you can provide that, rather than calling me dumb for asking a question.
19 deleted, Boehner impersonating John Boehner and talking about urinating on money. Banned. See the UA:
Thanks, Tyler. Looks like some people got election night mixed up with Halloween.
If only they were not so disgusting. . .
We needed to completely clean house. Why in the heck does this crook Boehner get a free pass? He was part of the repeal of Glass-Steagall etc, not stopping Fannie/Freddie, did nothing during the meltdown but give money away like Santa Claus, refused to even discuss investigations into the financial institutions/Congress involved in the meltdown, led the charge for TARP and the other bailout crap. Oh, and did I mention still has no clue how to solve this nightmare he was part of starting.
How can you elect anyone that was part of all that and not screaming bloody murder through it all? I simply do not get it. What do these people have to do to not get reelected, much less forced to resign or impeached? I am not saying don't vote for a Republican but why didn't the party demand new people to at least fake there was a new Sheriff in town?
After all that has happened this clown is the best the party has for leadership???
The same stupid thing with Reid in Nevada. A newcomer would have walked to victory but the party insists on running that crook and maybe losing the seat. What is wrong with this whole picture?
I'm a moderate Republican, white, two Master's degrees, own my home, single parent focused on raising my two sons with proper values and giving them all the support I can to realize their full potential in life. I make more than $200K per year as a result of years of hard work, long hours and my professional expertise. I voted for President Obama because he is a decent, intelligent and progressive person who wants to make a good country great.
I typically don't vote for Republicans because I find their self-centeredness shameful and unconscionable - they're all about ME instead of WE. I believe that those of us who have the means to do so should pay our fair share of taxes to create the kind of society we can all be proud to live in. I'm surrounded by neighbors who seemingly don't have anything larger than themselves in mind as they vote their wallets.
It's funny how all the Republican conservatives and Tea Party candidates conveniently ignore the fact that it was THEIR guys - George Bush, Dick Cheney and company - who got us into this mess by plunging us into 8 years of an immoral and budget-busting war against Iraq with trumped up charges of WMD. Bush inherited the LARGEST BUDGET SURPLUS IN HISTORY from Bill Clinton when he took office and managed to burn through all of it and rack up the humungous deficit and economic mess we've had to live with since. All for a selfish vendetta to get Saddam who plotted to have George Sr. assassinated - man, what a great spiritual leader for our country!
So folks.... let's not bury our heads in the sand here. Republicans won't hesitate for a minute to fund their paranoid military adventures around the world no matter the financial and human cost (I'm NOT talking about Afghanistan where we should rightfully have concentrated our efforts to take down Al Qaeda and Islamic extremist terrorism ever since 9-11). And they have the gall to tag Democrats as 'tax and spend' liberals. No different than 'tax and spend' conservatives - just spending our tax dollars on different things. One camp seeks to improve society; the other seeks to bully others around the globe to meet our insatiable lust for blind economic gain regardless of whether it's morally 'right' and 'fair.'
Where we could really benefit from 'fiscal restraint' is in the defense arena. We could also lose the spending of millions of $ to trash the other guy on TV whether fact-based or not. We could happily live without the millions of $ spent on political telemarketing that only serves to turn us all off. Just think of all the POSITIVE and BENEFICIAL things that money could be invested in instead to help solve some of our most pressing needs and issues!
Tk private is the only one that makes any sense as an an american citizen living abroad iam so puzzled how people forget so quickly when it comes to politics, obama is trying to clean up the huge republican mess for gods sake people open up your eyes once and for all.
tk: my history with the Republican party is similar to yours. Their behavior is shameful. Enjoyed reading your post.
Unfortunately, the defense contractors literally own both parties as do the FED bankers. As long as both of these parties prevail and one can retain a majority these two lobbies will driven trillions a year in debt into their pockets.
You know the Democrats used to be the party of "WE" but not anymore. They give out money and resources with a laser making sure only Democratic lobbies and unions get the money. The sad part is only the high level management, big wigs and administration get the money in those with little trickling down to the regular guy. They still insist on continuing to support every "stray cat" of society with unfunded entitlements simply because it is "the right thing to do". Scamming of the system is absolutely rampant and out of control.
The wars costed us around $8 trillion but the Democrats have created $50 trillion in unfunded entitlements that are "non negotiable" and sinking the country like a rock. The wars have to go but at least they put tens of millions to work for over a decade. Entitlements are dead weight and a PURE DRAIN on the economy.
