The Boston Globe called Sen. Mitch McConnell's (R-KY) decision to back an earmark moratorium "a surprising reversal that could put a halt to the controversial federal spending practice."
Is Pelosi in trouble? "A deal Speaker Nancy Pelosi struck Friday to stave off a messy Caucus leadership fight appears to have done little to tamp down insurgency in her ranks and build a consensus for her bid to be Minority Leader," Roll Call reports. "The California Democrat insisted in a meeting Monday with her top lieutenants that any unhappiness with her leadership is not widely felt and called it 'a minor irritant,' according to several sources with knowledge of the meeting. But it appears as if a group of Democrats remains unhappy with Pelosi’s decision to stay on as leader and are determined to try to delay leadership elections scheduled for Wednesday, amend Caucus rules to limit her power or send a message by voting down bills in the lame-duck session."
"Outgoing House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) is the GOP's primary source of contact within the Democratic leadership, a top Republican said Monday," The Hill reports. "Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), the incoming chairman of the House Budget Committee, suggested Republicans get along best with Hoyer, the second-ranking House Democrat who will stay in the No. 2 position in the next Congress."
The Congressional Black Caucus, by the way, isn't completely on board with the deal to create a position for Jim Clyburn that's not Whip.
Meanwhile, Sen. Chuck "Schumer is taking over the Democratic Policy Committee post being vacated by Sen. Byron Dorgan and getting responsibility for the Senate Democrats’ communications operation -- aka the party's war room," the New York Daily News writes.
The New York Post goes with "Trial Buffoon" over a picture of Charlie Rangel for the start of his hearing yesterday.
Roll Call: "Government reform advocates complained that a House ethics subcommittee’s decision Monday to cut short its trial of Rep. Charlie Rangel -- eliminating witnesses and arguments, and moving straight to deliberations -- will conceal the panel’s decision-making process from public view."
"A key senator who is balking at legislation to help ailing 9/11 responders backed similar steps for sick nuclear workers in his home state," the New York Daily News reports. "Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader from Kentucky, refuses to take a public position on the $7.4 billion James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, but sources say that in private discussions he has not supported it."
“Congressman-elect Tim Scott is vying for a new leadership position that House Republicans are creating to recognize the importance of their large freshman class,” the Charleston Post & Courier writes.

Thoughts come to mind from 2007-2008, flip flop, flip flop.
As long as the extremism of the last 2 years is checked by the two groups having to work together, it will hopefully be better.
this flip flop of McConnell is just for show . ear marks are just a very small part of the pie just a sliver a small sliver so small you can hardly see it on the pie . this is just for show and to seem like a big deal when it is not . what they should be cutting is the 1.4 trillion dollars they want to give the rich in tax cuts . and you call the past 2 years full of extreamest. tell me what are the extremes that went on during the past 2 years and I would bet it was GOP doing it altime . so let me no what you are talking about be streight an to the point . not just in generaliates . I bet you can't do it .
Hopefully it won't be more back room dealing and ways around the proposed earmark restrictions that the Dems have been doing so far. Instead lets propose bills to contain campiagn financing corruption. DON'T allow them to keep unused donations, DON'T allow offshore donations (China/clinton), restrict coorporate donations.
how about having the sc reverse the corporations as persons/humans with rights as such...that was the biggest crock of judicial crap to come down the pipe in quite awhile. back room dealings go with both parties, wish folks would quit trying to tie corruption and lying to one party or another, they both do it and unfortunately they both will continue to do it. notice the dems did try for campaign reform, but the reps fought that tooth and toenail...reform, not for the reps, tired of lip service from both of them...because voters are such sheep and won't think or read for themselves, the majority votes for the d or r without knowing one thing about the candidate. corporations have no place in making donations, get rid of all lobbyists, make it a crime for elected officials to have any contact with them....that will start reform...but we will only get lip service from both parties.
first off there has not been any backroom dealings this is a favorite saying of a defeated GOP. they were offered the opportunity to join in but they would not do it . the GOP don't want to do anything now before the first of the year . the DEMOCRATS will have to do it alone again . the GOP don't no want they stand for except to give all the money to the rich and if they can't do that then to hell with the rest of us.
This is the biggest problem with our form of government....people like her and john b .. John mc..mitch Mc..cantor..steele all these people need to step aside for the new generation of leadership..they are the ones who when in power.. led us down a path of financial disaster...looking the other way for their wealthy friends.. America belongs to the people not these bought& paid for politicians ..step aside all of you !
Why, when McConnel's name is on the 'mainstream' media, it's in connection with the earmarks deal, and NEVER about his trying to get Bush to reduce troops in Iraq for POLITICAL gain, while publicly hammering Dems for also trying to get some troops home just beccause it would have been the right thing to do for them??
I have heard that MR Bush wrote this in his book . the story about McConnell going to him an asking him to bring home some troops home from Iraq to make it look like we were doing something over there and were about to bring home some more troops an also ending the war if we did not the GOP was going to lose congress . while The Democrats tried to get President Bush to Bring the Troops home be cause it was the right thing to do . then the bastard gos public hammering the DEMOCRATS saying they wanted to cut and and run . what a hypocrite this man is. he needs to be kicked out of congress just for being a hypocrite. and liar . if it is against the law to lie to congress then it ought to be a law for congress to lie to the American People . I don't mean promiseing something and then not be able to produce but just out right lie .
McConnell......straight in the hole. your tea bagged.
I agree Nebo straight in the hole . It is hard for me to believe we have people in congress this lowdown .
