Republican: 'No chance' START happens in lame duck

In a brief comment to NBC News this afternoon, Republican Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona said, "I think there is no chance that [the START] treaty can be completed in the lame duck session."

Kyl was responding to a question about whether there had been any progress made on negotiations for the START nuclear reduction treaty. Earlier this afternoon, Kyl attended a meeting to discuss START at the request of Sen. John Kerry (D-MA).

Also attending the meeting, according to John McCain (R-AZ) were Republican Sens. McCain, Roger Wicker, Jim Inhofe, John Thune, and others.

Kyl also stressed that he was still willing to talk to whomever wanted to talk, hence his meeting today with Kerry. He added that Kerry had been very "persistent" in his effort to continue discussions.

Just what the heck has John Kyl ever done that was worthwhile other than bring cold beer to McCain? What a great waste of oxygen....

Neo-cons at the gate! We see where that got us in the last decade. This may just be the fight that Obama relishes, because it's going to bring statesmen to the table like Richard Lugar pitted against the hysterics of the Dick Cheney crowd. This I'll pay to see.

For the party that always tries to claim defense of America as their banner, I find it very difficult understand why they cannot find time to discuss such an important issue. It does not matter what the issue nor the importance of it, if our President has said it is important, the republicans will fillibuster it. This applies to bills they themselves sponsored but once the President says it is a good idea they are no longer for it. Racism raises its ugly head I'm afraid. I really thought we were a better people than that.

Yea, why the sudden Lame Duck rush with START.

Many Americans (and the Kremlin) seem to interpret START as restricting America's ability to deploy missile defenses. Obama says that is not correct. Senators say OK, can we see the negotiating record? Obama says nah, you don't need to see that - just trust us. And we need to do it right now, can't wait a few months.

Isn't this how we got the health care disaster, stimulus that didn't, and FinRef. We don't know what is in it, but let's rush it through. Same cast and crew that just got spanked by the American people for doing the exact same thing.

So when did Russia all of a sudden become such an immediate national nuclear threat and how come nobody told us.

        Block it. Say no.

Wait for the new guys. Let's do it the right way, the way the American people want it to be done.

I have no faith in Obama and his lame ducks who want to pass legislation in a hurry "so we can find out what's in it".

Especially when it deals with missile defense and national security.

Hey, me neither. But let's face it Bob, since Ike, the repubs haven't been very effective on the whole fiscal responsibility thingy. Do you really think they can change? Putting your faith in the repubs will lead to nothing but pain and heartache.

I do not trust Republicans to not put their personal careers, or the interest of their party before the interest of the country.

I do trust that the Obama Democrats will put their personal careers and interest of their party, always, before the interest of the country.

I still don't see how passing a bill that's been held up in committe for 8 months to patch a treaty that expired a year ago is a rush. I hate having to reply to ignorant talking points.

It is the Senate approving a treaty which was signed months ago, not legislation. They've had all the time in the world to look it over. Reid should call them into session, or Obama should, and not let them go home until the work of the Senate is done.

This is absolutely disgusting. With past presidents like Reagan and Bush, this START treaty was passed with votes like 95-3 but with Obama, they want to act like idiots. Dems need to play hardball with these wingnuts and keep their butts at work through the holidays until all of these votes are taken. They've had enough tax-payer funded vacation time anyway. Get To Work!

They should stop whining and acting like moronic bullies and actually do something for the country.
I get being against the current administration, but I fail to see how GOP is better when stuff like this happens. They want us get nuked just because Obama says this is important. Looking forward to the next two years. Fun times.

I hope everyopne that voted these jokers into office are happy! Let's see, they have voted against The START treaty, against extending unemployment benefits and against fair pay for women. That is quite a record and they haven't even taken office yet! The next two years are going to be just great, especially for the shrinking middle class. The rich will get richer and the middle class will become the lower class.

          Good going everyone!
