Palin says she will 'clean up' journalism

Sarah Palin is vowing -- in a FOX interview that will air later today -- to "clean up" journalism, and says she will not speak to CBS's Katie Couric again, calling her "biased" and won't "waste my time."

Couric conducted the interview in 2008 in which Palin tried to defend her foreign policy credentials. Of Russian President Vladimir Putin, she said, "It's very important, when you consider even national security issues with Russia, as Putin rears his head and comes into the airspace of the United States of America, where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border."

Palin said of journalism:

"I want to help clean up the state that is so sorry today of journalism. And I have a communications degree. I studied journalism, who, what, where, when, and why of reporting. I will speak to reporters who still understand that cornerstone of our democracy, that expectation that the public has for truth to be reported. And then we get to decide our own opinion based on the facts reported to us."

Palin got a journalism degree from the University of Idaho in 1987, after which she briefly was a sportscaster in Alaska:

(Hat tip: Political Wire) And since Palin is going to be in the spotlight this week with her book out, here's more on Palin.

The stench of the leftist media worldwide is puke-inducing. Vapid, perky Katie Couric and her ilk spew a river of sewage and liberals lap it up like frenzied pigs at a trough.

Merely mention the name Palin.........and it's like you poured gasoline down a rattlesnake hole. All the venom begins to flow, the hatefulness, the name-calling, the self-congratulatory comments declaring her inadequacy at every opportunity.

Tell me, if Sarah Palin is so irrelevant......why does the mere mention of her name cause so much attention from the left ?

One final comment, if Sarah Palin does, in fact, have a degree in Journalism, has it ever occurred to any of you that she might have at least SOME KNOWLEDGE of what she's talking about ????? No, that probably wouldn't work for you because she's a conservative and you liberals are so convinced of your own intellectual superiority.

Right. You'll see no biased "contributions" from Palin on Fox. She'll be the gold-standard beacon of responsible unsubjective journalism to which the others can only dream to aspire.

. . . and she'll still have time for book-signings and reality shows. What a star!

Chortle, perhaps little miss white trash is afraid of facing Couric, who most assuredly out-scores her on any IQ test, or perhaps she is fearful Couric can dance better than she or whatever dumb, illogical rantings Palin can display, in public. She also has much difficulty pronouncing simple words, just like ole dubya. Based upon intelligence and social skills, I would pick Dubya any day. Even ole dubya was less embarrassing than the Palin white trash clan. shudder, shudder

Perhaps Palin is afraid of Couric's responses to her moose bladder stew, bear skin cape and home brew! Awww -- only in America, a white trash icon?

Half-governor Palin has a Bachelors degree in communications with an emphasis in Journalism. So the article is incorrect in stating she has a degree in journalism. And to think, it only took 4 different colleges and 6 years to receive her degree. What a great president she would be!

Here's a copy and paste from Wikipedia: " Palin attended Hawaii Pacific University in the fall of 1982 and North Idaho College in the spring and fall of 1983. She attended the University of Idaho in the fall of 1984 and spring of 1985, and attended Matanuska-Susitna College in the fall of 1985. Palin returned to the University of Idaho in the spring of 1986, receiving her bachelor's degree in communications with an emphasis in journalism in 1987"

Jim-

When has she ever shown she has any knowledge of what she is talking about? Having a degree in journalism only qualifies you to go looking for a job in communications. You build your creditentials once you have been on the job for awhile.

Personally, I am not convinced of my own intellectual superiority so I am willing to listen to anyone who has well thought out opinions and can offer solutions to the pressing problems of this nation. Snappy one-liners and cute folksy phrases do not make policy.

I hope this inspires people who haven't seen it already to find a video or transcript of Palin's 2008 interview with Couric. Anyone who thinks this woman is competent to be President of the United States would be given ample reason to think again.

And before I'm branded a liberal Palin-hater, I'm not. I'm a centrist who thinks both sides go overboard with their rhetoric (negative or positive) based almost solely on whether they see a (D) or (R) next to someone's name.

USMC: Check out Palin's speech in Evansville (sorry, no teleprompter). I must caution you, this is a "pro life" speech. Probably melt the eyes and ears of most in here. Most would rather justify Obama's support of infanticide. Wait a minute; I take that back. That was not nice of me. He only advocated killing "born alive" infants when they could not otherwise survive from having been poisoned, clawed at, and ribbed out of their mother's womb and survived a botched abortion. Those are Ok to kill. Ah yes, the "pro-choicers", got to love the slippery slope down which they shoved us since Roe vs Wade. Now we're all slipping and sliding in the blood and guts of a two generations.

Can you imagine a real candidate announcing they won't speak to a journalist because they simply asked what Newspapers they read? Palin is going to have to learn to deal with those "trick" questions. Ha.

PALIN THINKS DINASAURS WERE HERE 4000 YEARS AGO!!! She couldn't name a single newspaper, and she thinks dinasaurs were here 4000 years ago. Does that not give one pause as to whether this woman is of sound mind to run the country? Not to mention, Russia is her neighbor. Neighbor folks - as in next door. Right there, friend of hers. Having her little tea party with them. Every time Sarah Palin opens her mouth, the biggest problem of all is, she doesn't speak the truth. To me, that is a serious problem. She didn't finish her term as Governor, so she can't commit to her job at hand. This is not a left or right issue here, liberal or not, democrat vs. republican - this is about NOT EMBARASSING OUR COUNTRY. This is about having someone with at least half a brain in charge. I'd rather have Mickey Mouse at the helm (he at least knows how to run a business) than Sarah Palin. I am very scared where this country is headed if we even entertain the possibility of allowing someone this stupid into the top job of this country. Someone who is hiding from the media. Do you think in the Oval office you can pick and choose who asks you questions? Will she decide she will not answer the voter's questions because we are "unfair" or "unjust" to her, or picking on her? What about heads of other countries? If she can't handle the pressures now, how do we expect Ms. Sensitivity to handle international negotiations? With a shotgun in their eye? A dagger to slice them up when she's finished? This is not reality TV, this is the Presidential role. You don't get do-overs. I cannot believe there is anyone in this country who would hire someone like Sarah Palin to run a corporation, let alone an entire country. Wake up before it's too late - this is like a very bad nightmare.e pressures now, how do we expect Ms. Sensitivity to handle international negotiations? With a shotgun in their eye? Laura,

A communications degree with an emphasis in journalism IS a journalism degree. That is just the way the degree reads. I have an accounting degree--it is a Bachelor of Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting. That does not make it any less of an accounting degree. I am still an Accountant qualified to sit for the Certified Public Accountant exam.

Whoo boy... what a NUTCASE the PROUDLY IGNORANT juvenile-like women-child Sarah Palin is. I ALMOST (I said ALMOST) feel sorry for her, that she has put her IGNORANCE on display of EPIC PROPORTIONS, on a WORLD-WIDE level, and she will NEVER be able to remove that stigma.... all of her own doing.

WHAT SANE HUMAN, goes after one of the most powerful positions in this country - while having the intelligence of a lump on a log (my apologies to the real lumps on a log) - and then tries to blame someone for her BLANTANT DUMBNESS.

SPECIAL MESSAGE TO SARAH PALIN (ONE OF THE MOST IGNORANT PERSONS ON THIS PLANET)

Sarah Palin... YOU DO NOT AND NEVER WILL HAVE THE INTELLIGENCE TO BE QUALIFIED FOR "ANY" LEADERSHIP POSITIONS ANYWHERE ON THIS PLANET - EXCEPTION: YOUR FLEECED FLOCKS AMONG THE BAGGERS 'N WINGERS. So maybe you could "start" a country somewhere (ideally in an area that humans can access (other than your fleeced flocks). You don't even need your new country to be charted on the world globe. It could be like how the leper colonies were handled back in the day.

As far as your DELUSION of cleaning up journalism.... OMG, I'm STILL laughing at that one. You have to AT THE VERY LEAST have some kind of "capacity" to understand stuff.... to understand basic vocabulary (not by "making your own words up"). And most importantly, you must have some form of INTELLIGENCE to do something like that, and there is ABSOLUTELY no signs of intelligence in you.

As far as ignoring Katie Couric - forgetaboutit..... I remember the look of disbelief in her eyes as she tried to interview you as VPOTUS candidate. She is STILL laughing from the interviews you did with her.... that you thought you "nailed."

Why didn't you go after Charles Gibson?! I can STILL see the look of disbelief on his face during his interviews with you. You also thought that you "nailed" that one too, but the ONLY thing that you nailed was the "nails in your political coffin", as THE DEPTH OF YOUR DUMBNESS UNFOLDED in the eyes of the ENTIRE world.

No one has been able to shut you up since. Yep... just keep of hammering those nails in your political coffin.

I ALMOST (I said ALMOST) feel sorry for you. HOW can someone be this mental?! But this is the results of your own doing - perhaps because even today, your juvenile mind STILL doesn't know any better.

I do feel sorry for your youngins' because they had the MISFORTUNE of you being their mother, and they ABSOLUTELY have NO role model, as you've encouraged them to be JUST LIKE YOU.

The majority of the people in this country cannot stand you, doesn't like you, and just wants you to GO AWAY! You WILL NEVER be placed in ANY leadership position in this country! NEVER!!

The DEPTH of you IGNORANCE is ASTOUNDING!!

    That's MY opinion!

Maybe the pit bull with lip stick (now that's good journalism she learned in school) can start by straightening out the irresponsible reporting by the FOX network, the propaganda machine of the conservative party. Not holding my breath though since she probably didn't really get her degree in college.

Do the math people. Sarah eloped with Todd on August 29,1988 and had Track on April 10, 1989. She either had Track early or Bristol was a lot more like her mother than in looks and gender. Not saying they are making the numbers up but what other news channel, or heck, any other program on TV takes so much time to convey to their viewers that they are leading in the ratings. Why should that matter to anyone? Too bad we don't have people touting the most accurate news channel. I would have no idea which one that would be because they all pretty much suck. Palin will never run for President but it is really funny to listen to the libs when the subject is brought up.

Don-I don't see where clown is offensive at all.

I don't understand the fascination the media has with Palin...she's very outspoken, true...but you would think that if she were so awful they wouldn't keep putting her out there...I don't get it.

What is it about conservatives that they think they're better than other Americans, i.e., libs.

As one American more liberal than not, let me express it this way. Louisiana Don for example.

Libs sees to be a snide way of insulting liberals. Liberals are libs, see?

Conservatives don't seem to get a similar snide insult on these blogs, although it seems appropriate.

Liberals are libs, and Conservatives are, well, cons. See?

So to all the cons on this blog, please stop with all the comments from you cons, eh?

No contest! Only two American groups vote and worship Repubs, the wealthiest top one percent and white trash, rednecks, with low levels of consciousness and intellect. This nation's intellectuals are all progressive and liberal, and anyone who likes Palin, just has to be a brainwashed drone, brainwashed to keep the rich pigs lapping up all the goodies, brainwashed to give the rich pigs the tax breaks. What a travesty. Americans are so utterly stupid and so very brainwashed!

I don't hate Palin and I am definitely no liberal but it absolutely astounds me that anyone actually thinks she is Presidential material or even close. Most of the people I know are right of center to right of the Attila the Hun and nobody believes for a second that she could govern our country. She is nothing more than a political gadfly whose 15 seconds of fame is long past due.

JH, I suppose you'll brand me as a Democrat if I tell you that it doesn't take too many brains to figure out which line was crossed. Even as a Independent, I can see the line. Perhaps you should get your eyes check, or attend a reading comprehension class.

millerz, wouldn't you find it offensive if I called Bush, Cheney, Boehner, Rove, Rush, Palin, or McCain clowns? Sure you would! And it would be

Also, you apparently don't understand that one of the qualities that drives media is a topic or person who is controversial. She fits the bill perfectly. She is divisive, has some sex appeal for the testosterone driven, doesn't practice what she preaches, and puts her children on the stage with her. It certainly isn't because she contributes in any intellectual capacity to the political conversation. She is identifiable for those in America who view themselves as "typical" when their children defy them, making mistakes as teenagers that have an affect on them for the rest of their lives, when they engage in activities that are not typical for females, and who have used their sexuality for personal gain. In other words, to a class of people whose moral compass and ethics is out of whack. Granted, there are plenty of those in this United States! They are not the type of people I have for friends, I can assure you.

I'll agree that some in the media are not journalists. However, her stint in the sports world after attaining her degree in journalism does not qualify her as a journalist! She has no experience in the field of her major.

Louisiana Don. Please, to elsewhere, head over to FOX or Drudge where they appreciate disrespect and hatred. You want to make a comment saying you'd prefer Palin, you don't like President Obama that's fine, but your comment crossed the line.

If you believe that then you should be directing your comment to Dan himself. After all, he is the one that initially made the comparison between Palin and Obama. Grow up.

You know, this is the typical response I see from people that think they know best. They have absolutely NO experience but think they know best. Never govern anything but they know best. Never run a company and meet payroll but they know best. This is Obama. Palin may not be my first choice as President, but she has governed a State and apparently did far better then others like California, Nevada, and Michigan to list a few. No, it's not a coincidence that they are all controlled by Democratic Govenors and State Congresses.

Besides, everyone knows Palin is dumber than a brick. She is just a publicity hound and opportunist. I hate to say it but 90% of the US population could do a better job than Obama has in the Oval office. Obama is the biggest train wreck the Oval Office has ever seen. Palin could just sit there and do nothing and have greater success. All Obama has done was move our country towards Socialism, bankruptcy and showing the rest of the world how Wrong we are.

The worst part is, not only is Obama a bad President, he has no respect for the office.

          1) Not wearing his suit jacket in the office.

          2) Asking a bodyguard to sit and drink a beer with him.

          3) Becoming offended that someone refused to shake his hand because he could not be bothered to know that it is against etiquette for the President to be touched.

The list goes on and on. But, you libs do not care about any of that.

Judging an individual by inconsequential events and then telling us the parts equal the whole is a logical fallacy, my friend. I do not have an issue with a man who does not wear a suit jacket to the office; I do have an issue with a man who has a drinking problem when he is a resident of the White House. I do not have a problem with a man who asks a bodyguard to drink a beer with him, but I do have a problem with a president who listens to an advisor who is a master manipulator and believes torture is justified.

Thus, the thought of Sarah Palin putting her sights on the White House and vowing to "clean up" journalism sickens me. How do you clean up free speech? Is her view the only valid one? What if I applauded Couric's comments and questions? Does that make me less desirable as a citizen, and prone to censorship?

Pookymaker, I hope that was an attempt at sarcasm.

Suits are for red coat patriots to the House of Windsor back across the pond. I thought we kicked those b!tches outta here 234 years ago, but then again, I also think the redcoats and British Loyalists that remained here morphed into the GOP.

I'd drink a beer and chat with my bodyguard if I needed to have a body guard. I'd much prefer that the guy who is protecting me actually liked me. The Secret Service guys hated the way the Clintons treated them, liked the Bushes, and so far like the Obamas from what I've heard.

I highly doubt Obama would get offended by that. Shaking hands can get you sick. That's why Donald Trump refuses to shake anyone's hand.

She'll reform the state of journalism all right! Heaven forbid that a journalist doesn't prevent you from making a fool of yourself, Sarah. It was Couric's job to ask you questions. That's what journalists do. Or, at least, they're supposed to do. For the fool part, you're on your own.

Maybe, it would be preferable to stay within the warm and supportive environment back at Faux News. There you're safe. There nobody will ask you all those difficult questions about world leaders and what they mean to us. No one will expect you to actually be informed nor will they expect you to read. You don't even have to know anything about geography. Just stick to the talking points and you'll be just fine.

Maybe this should be the model for journalism in this new republic in which we stand, Two nations (rich & poor, rural and urban, white & non-white, citizen and alien, educated and ....) under God, with liberty and justice for some....

I don't know if she can clean up journalism but I do agree that Katie Couric is biased.

Katie Couric should have stayed with the Today Show and smiled all day.

Couric is NOT a hard journalist. Come on - she asked Palin what magazines she reads. Couric NEVER asked any male candidate that question.

Besides that - who cares? As if anyone cares what reporters think in the first place not to mention, I could care less what magazines politicians read.

I realize that so many of you hang on the every word of Beck, Olbermann, Maddow, and others, but they are just opinionated mouth pieces. They just gab all day to fill air time. And if a lot of people listen to them, companies advertise on their program and the network is all happy.

I listen to CBS News Radio pretty much the whole day. Once in awhile, Katie Couric shares a page of her notebook with us. It's nauseating.

            Bob Randall,
It's probably because of the hate from the right that's been spewing out relentlessly ever since 1992.

Today's Center-Left is actually the Center-Right from 30 years ago. The Right gets gradually more extreme every election cycle and it drags the Left with it to the right. Today's right is extremely rightwing, and I think that is lost on most in the right side of the spectrum.

Clinton and now Obama too, are both good Republican presidents. Most of their policies would be considered center-right 30 years ago. That's an extreme irony.

While you a**holes on both extremes of the political spectrum are demonstrating your supposedly rapier wit with empty name calling and insults you are ALL missing the scary threat here. Palin says she is going to "clean up" journalism. This is blatant, threatening promise to start taking away freedom of speech by muzzling, freezing out and excluding the journalists who have offended her by asking her softball questions, a tactic we saw copied by Nevada senate candidate Sharron Angle.

The true irony is that she is saying those things from the platform of one of the most factually-challenged media outlets in existence. I'm not a regular viewer of either Fox or MSNBC, but I was a journalism major in college (who also did sports reporting) and I can tell you that FOX clearly demonstrates less compliance with basic journalism ethics, including fact-checking, and a great deal more obvious bias and echo-chamber, party-line reporting. In journalism classes, it's called "propaganda".

Remember you heard the warning here. There is an effort underway to take away our most basic rights and this threat to "clean up" journalism is part of it. Once enough of us are persuaded that "the media" need to be restrained we will be lost. We need - and should leave alone - all media sources of whatever political spectrum, and we should expect - hell, demand - that all candidates for office talk to all of them equally. Because once we start letting one or more politicians, people, government leaders, military leaders, etc., choose who the "good" or "valid" journalists are and which ones they will speak to, freedom of speech is already gone, and the rate of division and schism in this country will only accelerate.

Sadly, polls have shown that the tactic is already working and that a majority of Americans would not vote to ratify the Bill of Rights today if they were presented as amendments or legislation, yet unidentifed by the label of the Bill of Rights. We are becoming convinced that ways of thinking different from our own are so offensive, unacceptable and dangerous that we want so badly to restrict the rights of others that we are willing to compromise and/or give up our own rights in the process.

This country is dying from within faster than any outside power or terrorist organization can kill it. But that's the way the predators do it: turn a solid, united and formidable herd against itself and they become easy-to-pick-off factions. Read the posts on here... it's already working and we are doing most of their hardest work for them.

You are a tad hysterical. What makes you think Sarah Palin will be able to "clean up" journalims, let alone muzzle free speech. She HAS ZERO AUTHORITY to do so. I can not believe you are afraid of her.

She's just a person. I did forget. She knows how to shoot a gun. Can you imagine Sarah with her shotgun over at CBS' Black Rock in New York City? She can't get in the door with a Fox badge and most people wouldn't even look at her but I digress.

Thanks for the "warning" but I am not worried. Just as I am not worried when Palin talks about getting rid of abortion. She can't. It would take the Supreme Court to overturn its own decision. Doesn't happen very often. The last time it happened was 1954 to overturn a 1896 decision.

Sarah Palin can't do anything to stop abortion either.

I still voted for her and would contemplate voting for her for President. I don't make up my mind until I see all the candidates and the primaries have been finished.

If elected as President could she quit half way through again do we dare to take a chance like that I doubt if even teaparty people want to take that chance. It would be a first a President quiting. IN Dem

Why are you putting words in people's mouths? I NEVER said she would quit in the middle of a term.

By the way, there was a President WHO QUIT. His name was Richard Milhouse Nixon. He resigned on 8/9/74. And it counts even if you weren't born yet. Things happened before you arrived on the planet.

I am not worried about her quitting either. UNLIKE people in Alaska who can sue their governors over nonsense, none of us can sue a President.

Palin resigned because the major legal expenses she incurred because of all the FRIVOLOUS lawsuits filed against her. Lawyers are expensive.

But, necessity is the mother invention. She needed money to pay for the lawyers and got deals with Fox and TLC. Look who's zooming who.

But, PUH-LEEZ, I have not seen the line up. I do not vote for parties. I vote for people.

                Karen,

I'm not entirely sure IN Dem was talking directly too you. It sounded like a general question to the reader. But I do kinda agree that she does not have a stellar track record, weather its in governing, or public speech, or fact for that matter. I would expect that the person that I may vote for be able to answer basic questions. I have yet to see her do that. If you can show me evidence that she has, I would love to see it. It would prove many wrong if you could.

Those who won't follow the rules should be forbidden to use the news-vines. I realize I'm going to get a lot of flack for my remarks, it is not necessary to use vulgarities, curse words or symbols that mean the same as..... I hope I get some backup on this.

TTG1 - Please rephrase your question. Please also remember, that no one has to prove anything to anyone.

I believe in facts. Sarah Palin makes a hell of a lot more money than you or I. She has two tv shows.

YOU ALL TALK ABOUT HER CONSTANTLY.

Think about what that all means.

                  #2.55 - Tue Nov 23, 2010 2:08 AM EST

Thought about it... Still disagree though. I do think that my elected officials, for whatever office, have to prove to me that they are competent to lead and manage.

How much Ms. Palin makes neither impresses me, nor concerns me. It shouldn't be any big deal to you either. If it does, congrats, glad it makes ya happy. Her TV shows do very little to add to her credibility. All I see is a spacey publicity hound who constantly contradicts herself. Once again, I have never been given a reason to think she is competent.

God forbid a politician actually have to answer a probing question or two. Any journalist that asks even a mildly probing question these days is automatically branded "biased".

I am sick and tired of seeing milk-toast interviews of politicians. You know what? If you want to lead our great country, you can damn well answer a tough question or two.

To answer your questions about why we get our shorts in a twist every time Palin opens her uninformed mouth is simple. We aren't going to make the same mistake the Germans made in the 1930's with Hitler. We aren't going to sit idly by and let her gain a foothold.

This idea of reforming and reshaping the press to only ask questions she can answer smacks of censorship and won't be tolerated. I don't think the press could ever be dumbed down to that low of a level. They can only lower the bar so much even for her.

I almost fell off my chair when someone compared Palin to Hitler. That WAS FUNNY.

But maybe it is true. After all, most of you acted like sheep and voted for Obama and look at the mess you put us in.

If you can vote for rock star Obama, maybe you would vote for a Hitler.

I know I never would but I appear to be a minority because I think for myself.

That is simply non-sequitir... By definition...

I also like how your argument just turns into a nonsensical rant about comparing politicians to Hitler. So, how exactly is a vote For Obama related to Hitler? Why did you even bring that point up?

"After all, most of you acted like sheep and voted for Obama and look at the mess you put us in."

When Obama came into to office, we were losing 750,000 jobs a month and the Dow Jones was diving toward 6,000. The people who retained their jobs were worried that their 401K and other pension vehicles were going to be worthless. NOW THAT WAS A MESS!

The bailouts are being paid back at a profit to the government, we still have an auto industry, the Dow is over 11,000 and the economy is growing again. Sure, we still have a multitude of serious problems that could really use some bipartisan efforts but even George Bush acknowledges in his new book that we were on the brink of financial collapse. What if Obama had allowed your bank to close and you were unable to access your savings?

I don't agree with everything Obama has done nor do I agree with all of his priorities. However, I have to recognize progress in the country's economic security over the last two years and cannot call the man incompetent.

                        Karen;

Give real examples of how this country is turning socialist. Just don't throw a label out there you might not understand. However, this country was and still has the potential to become a feudal society with the rapid transfer of wealth to the top 2% and a dissappearing middle class. Historically, when any society experiences a lop-sided distribution of wealth it becomes unstable.

I'm a registered Republican but no longer sure what the party stands for. It surely isn't the party of Lincoln anymore. We need bipartisan solutions. I think the Democrats made a mistake keeping Pelosi as their leader in the house. But I think the Republicans have made a bigger mistake by failing to put forth any definitive solutions. After eight years of shooting from the hip and winging it, now it's 'Let's not rush in to anything, let's study this some more'. We need campaign reform where the lobbyists stop running the country and something can be done for the people. It would also be nice to have these important issues discussed with a tone of civility. Some of us independents who are so angered by Palin are riled because she purposely destroys that tone of civility.

Good post USMC-Vet. I agree. The word 'socialist' has been used in so many bizarre contexts that it is not longer a meaningful word. Socialism, has been generally seen as a government systemetically overriding the 'command and control' ability of industrial enterprises. Aside from some basic restrictions such as, not allowing child labor or slavery, anti-trust law, minimal enviromental protection, workplace safety, shared transportation systems (roads and railways), this country can not be considered socialistic by any means. It is clearly a market controlled economy. Nor, can the policies of this administration be considered socialistic. It is simply not true. Obama is a poltical pragmatist and a centrist. Although, an earlier post brought up the point that the U.S. is moving futher to the right in it's political spectrum. So the 'center' is more 'right' than it used to be. I happen to agree with that statement.

The concern is, where are we going with this? It's interesting that the "Progressive Era" was spearheaded by a Republican president, Teddy Roosevelt. This country was experiencing an unprecedented degree of wealth disparity. On one end was the relatively poor majority of Americans and on the other was the so called, Robber Barons (look them up). This country was rapidly moving towards becoming a feudal society with the few rich controlling the society. You can say that's happening today. But, it was much worse then. Roosevelt (himself a member of the priveledged class) turned this clock back by protecting our national forests and wilderness, protecting child welfare, protecting workers rights, putting financial controls to minimize the effects of the 'boom and bust' cycle. And, he was a Republican.

It's sad that history seems to be repeating itself. We seem to be going back to a time when, given enough money, a few can buy the government that they want. That civil liberties are slipping away. That environmental protections are portrayed as an excuse for economic success. I hope that we figure this out quickly. Although, when over a 3rd of the people polled last week don't even realize that the GOP has taken control of the House of Representives, it's really hard to keep hope alive. What were these people thinking?

                          Karen;

Health care is out of control. As you cry unconstitutional, remember the old Fram oil filter commercial? You can pay me now or you can pay me later? Millions and millions and millions of Americans are uninsured for health care. Because of this they do not get preventative care. When their problem becomes so severe that it must be treated, they go to the emergency room. Guess you foots that bill? A bill several-fold in severity that possibly could have been avoided if they had preventative health care. We taxpayers are footing this bill right now!!!

30 years ago I paid $200 a month for family coverage with Blue Cross / Blue Shield with no co-pays and no deductibles. Now I pay $2,100 a month for family coverage; more co-pays and deductibles than I can follow; and some employee without a degree in medicine in the HMO gets to decide should I seek treatment whether or not it is medically necessary.

The present administrations biggest failure on health care reform was public relations. Most people don't realize how far our system has regressed.

USMC - I read your post. I completely agree with bipartisan solutions. Two days ago, I left a voice message for John Boehner, THANKING THE LORD that he will be speaker of the house BUT he needs to cooperate with Obama because Obama's signature is required on legislation. I chastised Boehner for not showing up to Obama's summit.

Then I hear DEMOCRATS freaking out on Republicans.

Another big issue for me is how Obama wants to take from the rich and give to the poor. I call that Robin Hood, not feudalism. Why should it be a choice between giving a Cost of Living Increase for seniors and buying diapers for unwed mothers? As far as I am concerned, the seniors, WHO PAID INTO SOCIAL SECURITY, should be the ones getting the cash NOT unwed mothers.

While I agree that our health care system needs some tweaks, OBAMA AND HIS CREW GAVE IT A COMPLETE OVERHAUL AND I, ALONG WITH MILLIONS OF OTHERS, OBJECT.

How in the world is a person with ZERO business experience, ZERO management experience and ALMOST ZERO political experience MORE qualified to make such a radical decision?

The ONLY reason we gave money to the car manufacturers is because banks stopped lending.

"The ONLY reason we gave money to the car manufacturers is because banks stopped lending."

Not the ONLY reason. GM and Chrysler built inferior products in relation to market competition. In turn, their market share steadily declined. This, coupled with extraordinarily high operating cost caused by the UAW (some may a say socialist concept, but not really) and poor investments within their own portfolio as well as pension portfolios, led to a situation where the companies owed more every month than they were bringing in.

The banks could not lend them more money because of the credit crisis that they helped cause. Even if they could lend the funds, who would lend someone more money, when they already know they can't be repaid without corporate restructuring?

The TARP bailout was a bad option, but the alternative of no TARP would have been to sit back and watch the economy spiral out of control, not knowing how far things will drop. This TARP bailout did stabilize GM, who had a decently successful IPO last week, stabilize the banking system (which is still fundamentally broke), and has slowly helped stabilize the real estate market.

                          Point is:

There is no overnight fix to these problems. The issues we face today were not caused by Libs or Cons, Democrats or Republicans, Wall St. or Main St. We all played a part in getting us into this mess, so we will all need to help in finding solutions. People should question their authority, and hold them accountable for their competency. Both political leaders, as well as corporate leaders. We should all question things that sound like B.S. cuz they probably are. The biggest fear for governments and big business is an educated public who questions their questionable actions.

Because the news changes daily.....it's here one day gone the next.

The real money and interest is in fear.

The news organizations (on both sides, but if I were to rank them, Fox News would be #1) have done a great job at telling people day in and day out that the daily events going on are a part of a system, in their opinions a broken system. A system, that in their opinions is signalling the end to America, will cause up to become down, black to become white, dogs and cats living together, absolute chaos!

That the progression and advancement of certain areas (technology, marriage, abortion, religion) is causing America to change for the worse. As Glenn Beck put it....we need to scrap this and return to the judeo-christian ethics America was founded upon...whatever the hell that means.

And for some simple minded people....they want to believe this. They want to believe that someone out there, knows the answers and is preaching the end of the world as they know it.

Fox News is essentially those 24 hour christian stations that tell us Jesus Christ is returning any day now.....you know what...they've been spouting that Bullsiht for the past 20 years and I have yet to see J to the C. Maybe just like those christian talk shows....Fox News is just blowing hot air up the rear ends of its viewers.

Oh, please. Couric lobbed her softball questions, which were in no way partisan, or even loaded. She asked her what newspapers she read. Palin didn't even have the sense to say "the Anchorage Daily News." Now, if someone asked ME which newspapers I read, and I knew that, for the job, knowing what was going on in the world was a prerequisite, I'd bluff and say, "The New York Times" or at LEAST the newspaper of my local town.

                          Maybe Couric should have asked an easier question;

"Why is it so easy for you Palin women to get pregnant in the back of a pickup truck"?

"Why is it when you Palin women tell other women to say NO....you say YES"!

"How many times will it take the Palin women to fail at Abstinence Only before you start using the forum you both have to start educating other girls on "safe sex" and "protected sex"?

Did any of you ever actually watch the Palin Couric interview? The questions were the easiest softballs a journalist could toss. Someone running for class president at a decent high school could answer the questions she was asked ,I know my kids could. I found the fact that the questions were so easy embarrassing any other candidate in memory woul have danced out of the interview relieved that all their preparation had been unnecessary. The only part of the Constitution she actually appears to have any familiarity with is the right to arm bears. She quit as governor ,encouraged racists, has raised poorly educated homophobes as children, failed two ethics examinations and supported a crazy woman in Delaware and a guy who likes to dress up like a Nazi in Ohio but on the positive side she is now a multimillionaire with a kid on TV its bloody white trash heaven.

Do the math people. Sarah eloped with Todd on August 29,1988 and had Track on April 10, 1989. She either had Track early or Bristol was a lot more like her mother than in looks and gender. But wait that's alright since she conservative but I don't even want to imagine what those same people would have said if Chelsea Clinton had done the same. LMAO

I love reading some of the 'less bright' comments like: President Obama's administration is a 'train wreck' and he has done such a horrible job in the White House. You people dishonor yourselves. At least explain your comment(s), just saying something does not make it true.

President Obama has passed a historic number of pieces of legislation that benefits the American people and will benefit this country in the future as well as the present. Republicans AND Democrats have attempted to pass much of this legislation over the past 50 years........without success.

Republicans hate government because they are so bad at it:

The news media has failed America for several decades now. The news tends to report what people say and omit the more important news of what they actually DID and the outcome of what they actually DID.

Fiscal conservative Ronald Reagan grew the national debt 186.1%. Fiscal conservative George H. W. Bush grew the national debt 53.8%. Fiscal conservative George W. Bush grew the national debt 77.4%. The tax and spend Jimmy Carter grew the national debt 41.3%. The tax and spend Bill Clinton grew the national debt 40.6% (lowest of these 5 former presidents)............Why has the public bought into these bazaar ideas that Republicans know squat about economics and still hold these inaccurate beliefs? Fiscal conservatives...........really?

Sorry, we can't count President Obama's deficit spending. He inherited the deficits and the national debt from you chowder-head Republicans that deregulated everything and sucked $11 trillion of wealth out of the country, destroyed the housing market, collapsed Wall Street and created a severe recession that is only second to the Great Depression. Oh ya, and the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Ronald Reagan's inept 'trickle-down' theory has become 'fire-hose up'. Irresponsible tax cuts by republicans has given the U.S. ever increasing deficit spending and has generated a national debt of roughly $13.5 trillion.

The Republican obsession with 'national defense' and the two wars require the U.S. to spend more on national defense each year than all the other countries on the planet spend on national defense COMBINED.

Oh, By the way, all major wars and horrible financial times have been resolved by Democrats........not Republicans. Republicans should stick with corruption and leave the actual thinking to the Democrats.

One last thing about Sarah Palin in 2012..........Run Forest Run!

The sad part is the Republicans don't want to pay any taxes on the money they stole from the taxpayers.

Not surprising though because it seems like the Republicans have a knack for supporting idiots for office. Bush, Sharron Angle.

So let me get this straight.....a reporter asks Sarah Palin, lets face it, fairly simple questions that any qualified politician could and should be expected to answer and because Bible Spice (Reistey Redhead - awesome!) can't, she's choosing to play the victim again!

Let's see...Sarah decides she will only speak to certain reporters, probably about certain things and only certain things so her side and only her side is broadcast. Yup....this sounds like a totalitarian state.

If Palin is so great and couric isn't, why was Palin outsmarted by her in the interview. Couric would be a better choice than Palin. Palin doesn't understand anything and her knowledge of basic grade school facts like South Africa being a country is lacking. She doesn't even realize that not contradicting yourself one minute to the next is important. She has no qualifications and isn't intelligent enough to learn. Would you want a presidential candidate that is the victim of "Gothcha" questions? Our country would be the laughing stock of the world if she was elected. Foreign leaders would have zero respect which is not good for anyone, esp. a country. And no, seeing Russia does not qualify you to be commander in cheif. What a retard.

Not only that - PALIN THINKS DINASAURS WERE HERE 4000 YEARS AGO!!! She couldn't name a single newspaper, and she thinks dinasaurs were here 4000 years ago. Does that no give one pause as to whether this woman is of sound mind to run the country? Wake up before it's too late - this is like a very bad nightmare.

The Katy Couric interview was a softball interview - Palin proved her lack of any intelligence by not speaking in complete sentences, not making any sense and proving her lack of knowledge on any major issue. She quit the governorship of the smallest state in the nation, proved that she's a terrible parent by letting her 15 year old get knocked up in the back of some car by a drunken drop out. This idiot does not deserve any of our attention. If elected, she will destroy our nation.

Alaska ranks 47th of 50 states, has about 150K more people than 50th place Wyoming and, at fewer than 700K people is barely a moderate sized city in population. The point is that it's a puny state in terms of population. Do you really want to argue the point that the right doesn't make up stuff? Really? Really?

4 headline articles today on MSN about Sarah Palin? 3 more articles about the TSA? What's going on? Trying to derail the anger about the lack of punishment for Rangel by changing the subject?

I get worried when the liberal media goes too much one way that they're diverting from something more pressing.

                                  Joe correct.

Idiot ob and his clowns at TSA are screwing up the country, so the liberal talking heads are trying anything they can to take the heat off the dems.

But the dems are just too corrupt/arrogant/sleazy to take advantage of it.

unless you go to ob's old stomping grounds, the democratic machine is well oiled there, so well that they even get dead people to vote......twice

Couric is a total biased Democrat toad, she belongs on the view with Whoopie and the other mronic so called meaningful people. The worst anyone can say about Sarah Palin is that she has a high pitched voice so friking what! at least she is right in her convictions about cleaning up politics and the handouts the democrats keep wanting to give to their followers. I really think that Sarah couldnt do any worse than the Moron in the office at this time, at least SHE cares about the US of A and is always pushing forward on what this country is about instead of the great apologist bashing us to all these 3rd world governments.

Sarah is a hypocrite! She touts this abstinence philosophy and yet she was pregnant when she and Todd got married! And then she has a teenage daughter who gets pregnant. And, just as bad, she ignored accepted medical advice not to get pregnant in your 40's because you're more likely to have a retarded child! I'm glad she didn't choose an abortion, but that would have been a moot point if she'd foregone her pleasure long enough to use some birth control! There ARE some of us out here who preach abstinence and have actually practiced it!

When a woman doesn't take responsibility for her own reproduction, I can't put my faith in her to be responsible to make decisions that will affect my life directly. No one else should put their faith in such a person either.

She couldn't clean up her own act. How in the heck does she think she can clean up the behavior of an entire profession?

Nothing has changed at all for me..Funny, this has always been my life, no matter who was president. You see? It's not about your leader in Washington. It's about you. Although, I gotta say, if You can't outsmart Katie Couric, and you decide you don't want to play ball with your "adversaries", How the hell are you going to deal with Putin or any other world leader, when they dissagree with you? We gonna invade everyone? Our military is awesome, but all armies historically have their limits, Go read about Rome.

Mike - there hasnt been a "far left wing liberal" group in this country in many years. It ended in the 70's. In fact many of your GOP heroes were much more liberal than what you are calling liberal today. Try saying something of value instead of your pathetic little digs. You just come off sounding like an angry fool with no brain.

Since Obama became President I have found a full-time job and am able to keep my 21-year-old son on my insurance while he goes to school. I think the man is doing a fine job. Anyone who thinks Palin would be better is not paying any attention to the facts. Use some of that common sense you keep going on about.

                                  Another_OldGuy,

The absolute truth, there have been damn few far left democrats since the mid 70s. The Dems have become mostly moderates willing to compromise while the GOP has gone from fiscal Conservatism in varying degree and Social Moderation to wild eyed radicals. Since Nixons successful Southern Strategy the GOP has cobbled together a constituency with no intellectual gravitas from a who-s Who list of hate and special interest groups. For an idea of GOP stategy on exploiting racism read Lee Atwaters interview with Professor Alexander Lamis of Case Western. The same strategy has been employed for Homophobes, No Nothings, anti womens rights, anti-intellectualism, anti-semitism, anti-choice, gun nuts and a host of others.

There were radicals of every stripe in the 50s 60s and 70s most willing to take a billyclub to the head or a fire hose in the chest. Trust me ACORN is not a radical group Abby Hoffman was a radical not some get out the vote group.

                                  JKH

Mboma, IMO that is exactly what she does now! If you ever watch her giving a speech, you'll see what I mean. Turn the sound off, and you'll see an adult acting like a teenage beauty queen with her winks, eyebrow raising, smirks, and resting her chin on her hand which is supported by a bent elbow on the podium. That woman hasn't made it across the line from teenager to adult woman when it comes to using brain power to lead people to her position on an issue. Her looks and sex appeal have gotten her to where she is today but that will fade and she'll be left with continuing to make a fool out of herself whenever she tries to discuss anything of a serious nature.

I've noticed that anything she says or does, or for that matter anything her family does is big news. If we could just quit giving her the time of day she might just go away. Wishful thinking I'm sure but a guy can have some hope.

I don't think Sarah has "it" to become President; look at what Obama has done with his stint so far. But I applaud her "freeze out" of national media; particularly Couric who is likewise qualified only to be a news reader not a "wonk." I never dreamt of the day I would find more valuable news and comments on FAMILY GUY, or THE SIMPSONS. But it's here.

How dare Katie Couric ask Sarah Palin what she reads!!! You Betcha Sarah might have to make something up really, really fast..... Like everything!

                                  - That even tells us a bit about her supporters, Jock

I'd like to see this so called degree of stupidity huh Sarah Palin got a degree it was from doing that fancy pageant walking or that naked picture she took that the news media she so hates kept out of the news then put up a bunch of Sarah Palin look alike to cover and protect her. It's a good chance she could become the president as we have such stupid dumb people who never pay attention to the real facts, this 2 bit tramp and that high pitched voice and so called looks is all the American dummies need. Sarah Palin is a sht started and side walk shtrr she is a racist and divider. Many are following her and in all my days have I seen such a division and stupidity we are being pitted as Americans and the Right Wing Demolition ball has us fighting among ourselves while they write books and do fund raisers and get filthy rich and convinced the dummies that the million and billionaires are the ones creating jobs.

When they finally get in lets see how many jobs they create here. One more thing I am for who's right and have the sense to know what is right and wrong but so far I have voted for the Democrats but they are a poor excuse for being leader's and it is down right embarrassing to sit and watch know democratic strategist sit on the set and cave in and even give this stupid Palin a thumbs up on what she really stands for and that is hate of anyone who looks different from what she calls real americans.

I don't blame Sarah, you know that Katie Couric asks those hard hitting questions like what magazines and newspapers do you read??? Those questions are extremely hard for Sarah and NO ONE has a right to asks such person questions of someone who might lead this country!! If Sara really wants to get her message out she should get herself a TV show that she has complete and total editorial control of, a reality show where she can do take after take to make sure America sees the Sarah Palin she wants them to see!!! Oh, wait she already does have one!!

so she is going to "clean up" journalism? As what? A politician? A Fox news Pundit? If a politician well then isnt that interfering with the constitution? Just how is she going to "clean up" journalism? By bringing her dearth of knowledge from the degree she earned some 22 years ago? Or by critiquing a news anchor from one of the 4 major networks who was only asking her questions one might expect answered as part of a college entrance exam and application. As in What magazines or newpapers do you read to remain current or what do you think of the Bush Doctrine or or or or or ..........

So why are people wasting time with Sarah Palin? For that matter, why am I? She delivers stupid comments that beg for attention and everyone is giving her attention. It's time to move on people. There are far more important issues than Sarah Palin - a person who really doesn't have a grasp on reality.

Palin, the liar, saying that the press should report the truth. LOL !!!!!!

Look at politifact.com and see how many lies she's told.

She just wants the media to report things as she sees it. That'll be the day.
