Palin's schedule hugs her base

Sarah Palin’s latest tour of the Lower 48 has launched a thousand headlines comparing the 16-stop circuit to a general election campaign swing.

But a look at her schedule of promotional events for "America By Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith and Flag" shows that the former Alaska governor will mostly be visiting areas where her fans are already plentiful – and where she’s already enjoyed success on with her name on the presidential ticket.

While it does have some hallmarks of presidential ambitions -- visits to donor-rich Dallas and Houston, primary state stopoffs in South Carolina and Iowa, and events in a few swing states -- Palin’s latest tour still looks less like a battleground barnstormer than her 2009 roadtrip for “Going Rogue.”

As we noted at the time, 11 of 13 pre-Thanksgiving stops on her 2009 trip were in states considered up for grabs in the presidential election. Those included a number of Bush ‘04 states -- Florida, Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina – that Democrats turned blue in 2008.

This time around, she’ll be hitting states that are a deeper shade of red.

During her 16-stop tour, she’ll visit just three states (Ohio, Iowa, and Indiana) won by Barack Obama in 2008.

But most of her other events are in places where the McCain/Palin ticket came out on top by wide margins in 2008, like Oklahoma (+32), Kansas (+15), and Arkansas (+20). In eight of the 13 states she'll visit before Dec. 3, Obama lost by double digits.

In all, Palin's stops will be in states that her 2008 ticket won by an average of 11 percentage points.

(The numbers at the county level are similar -- she’ll visit especially heavily red areas in Tennessee, Indiana, and Kentucky – putting her in counties that went Republican in 2008 by an average of about 9 points.)

Smart move, surrounding herself with people who like her just before the holidays. Nothing says I love you like a book signing.

When will she figure it out, she is not electable at this time. She is a good 8-16 years away from really being electable. IMO.

No one in the world thinks Ms Palin is remotely qualified to be president.

Unfortunately a disturbingly large number of people believe she is.

8-16 years? Not even

She is attempting to build a resume based on personality, popularity, ghost written books, TV series and opinion.

Normally a politician builds a resume based on political experience. She should have finished her term as governor, then made a move to senator/congress. Possibly a cabinet seat under a new administration, then maybe a play for the Presidency.

She is making a play for the lowest common denominator of the electorate...the toothless Jerry Springer crowd.

You would think she would be able to process the fact that she does not feel welcome everywhere and has to pick and choose her destinations as an indication of the weakness of her case to become president.

Apparently your not up on politics. JFK was in his forties like Obama when they were elected president. You need to read more or don't comment if you don't have the facts.

The media has created Sarah Palin and only the media can now shut it down. Please stop the constant barrage of Sarah, Sarah, Sarah. If the Palin name comes up, I will turn off the TV or change the station. I will encourage everyone to do the same until the name Palin fades into oblivion. STOP IT!

No more independent voters who finally woke up from their earthquake. But Obama will still get a lot of bubblehead young people voting for him because they are in his class. President Obama - who is heads above your dear Bush - has taken the necessary steps to help bring us out of this mess. What the dummies - yes you - don't understand it that it takes more than 2 years to turn a train wreck around. But, wait and you'll see. And, no one is afraid of Republicans in 2012. 2010 is almost over, we have a whole year before anyone need declare their desire to be president. Hopefully we the people will be wiser and candidates will be smarter. I'm hoping the media gets the message, many of us are sick of Palinmania. We are tired of speculation which I call NON NEWS.

I personally am tired of everybodys opinion the media brings on to make another NON NEWS STORY.

There is so many stories that promote heroism, the troops, the people out on the front lines of poverty and the volunteers, of the fraud perpetrated on the average people with forclosuregate. The world news, even the congressional blockage of the Peace treaty with Russia. But what are they talking about the Palins.

If we decide to stop watching their stations they will change their programming and if they don't have anything to say they shouldn't have the microphone.

I hope every democrat will come out to vote for Palin in the primaries to save this country and keep us on the track of progress we are currently on coming from teh destruction of the prior 8 years that ended in total crash, failure, and bailouts.

In fact, we need to start by voting for Bristol on DWTS. Palin is very strong more as a primary candidate than a gneral election one. Her fans are totally driven explaining why her endorsement of even a slightly more insane ODonnell resulted in the Republican base jumping off the cliff. We only need to help them hype her perception of power even more at this point and they will be jumping off the cliff again in a couple of year (when most of the electorate WILL come out to render their opinion).

        Steve,

Presidents Reagan and Clinton had lower approval ratings at this point of their presidencies than President Obama has currently, before going on to win re election both by fairly wide margins.

And, unlike the last two years, as of January the Republicans will have some skin in the game with control of the House of Representatives so the GOP won't be able to merely sit on the side lines and throw stones at the Democrats as they've done. We'll see how well the Republican brand fares after a couple years of having to actually take part in leading the country.

Don't count your chickens until they've hatched.

Have no worry. The democrats are turning away from Obama now. They had a meeting with him behind closed doors and gave him a good tongue lashing blaming him for their loss because his inability to run the country and especially the healthcare bill that no one wanted. And you thought you voted for gold but got brass instead. The economy lack of jobs doesn't effect me but it is effecting the young people and who cares. Obama doesn't care and why shlould he. As long as you people can collect a check from the governmen for nothing your not going to look for work. I hope the republicans put a block on the extension of unemployment checks. Good Good Good.

Mariann - you sound very bright, but angry. What are you doing to change things? I voted for Obama for reasons of my own. I'm not to blame for the mess we are in. Nor is he, actually. Bush isn't even to blame. Nor is any president for that matter. We are all to blame. Anyone who ran up a credit card, took out a mortgage, sold a mortgage, played the stock market, bought cheap produce (we hate the illegals, but we love our cheap groceries) or did a million other things are to blame for why we are here today. Think about it Mariann. One man's policies do not kill a country and if you think the next President is going to come in and fix it all, you've been smoking too much of that illegal stuff. There are half a billion people in this country. If you think one person can stop them from running off a cliff, dream on.

That said, I just hope whoever the Preisident is at the time has the sense to put a lot of pillows at the bottom of the cliff while he/she is reigning.

Mariann Pepitone - "Once in a while he stutters" I have listened to just about every speech President Obama has made and stutters he does not. Contrary to the empty drums you listen to this President thinks before he speaks. I supposed you never noticed Bush's mangling of his words or his stupid laugh - HeH - Heh - Heh or Sister Sarah's shrill voice like fingernails on a blackboard, and finally when they do speak nothing but lies. Bush - the mushroom cloud - WMD - Sadam is collaberating with Al Quaeda

And Sarah, what a trip - the "real America" is in the back and beyond all those hard working city folk are not "real Americans" guess they were all born in Hawaii which also is not "real America" not enough "white people"

Frankly I've read enough of your garbage - we were in debt before Obama took office - jobs were lost at 700,000 a month under Bush's watch, the middle class has been under attack since Reagan - unions are at all time low just 29% - we rank 13th in the world for child mortality - schools are disfunctional and most of all there are people like you that just attack and have no solutions

                      Answer: For the halibut!

Don't knock her. She's getting paid to babble. Half of her public believes her, though. But the other half just finds her as a form of entertainment. She hasn't realized it, though. But the checks people write to get her to show up and babble just keep coming, and therefore, so does she, as long as those checks keep coming.

I really think all of your are underestimating the lady. Obama got elected with "enthusiasm"... Palin sees that same enthusiasm out there. Fox pushes her more than the others.... Name recognition?.... she's got it... and remember... it's electoral votes not popular votes... the lady can carry the south and mid west in her sleep....

I don't think she is qualified to be president... but lately I don't think anyone is qualiified to be president or a congressman....

Underestimating her? Sure she's got the cheerleader enthusiasm, but that's it. Other than that there's nothing going on in her head.

She can't carry any of the states without moderates and independents voting for her and the majority of those have an unfavorable view of her, as I do.

                          Al Gore Syndrome,

She can't carry her home state of 700,000 people,...she may carry Alabama and South Carolina; but that would probably be the extent of it.

I get that the American People aren't CLAMORING for competency (see 2010 results); but they DO seem to expect a bit more than this piece of lint fluff.

Well, of course, she is going to stay in the jerkwaters!  Nonetheless, I think she needs to take her own advice vis-a-vis the book as she so sanctimoniously criticized the American Idol contestants.  Their "parents" need to tell their kids just how hapless and stupid they really look to the rest of us --i.e., Bristol and Willow.   The bar is really low in Alaska, the standards are indeed not even standards like the rest of us have.  Barracuda needs to send her girls to the lower 48, get them a real education, and try to compete in something other than being fat little fisher girls who can shoot-- their mouths as well as their scruples!  Like why would "Willow" presume everyone thinks Bristolis "Hot?"  Bristol is a fat cow!  And willow--well, she is just a dumb, stupid little girl who will never go anywhere--except maybe Wasilla High and hook up with some loser guy.

What, exactly, are the "jerkwaters?" Are you saying that every state she is visiting is full of nothing but jerks? Why don't you encourage those states to secede, then? But then again, they make up part of that "Lower 48" you speak so highly about, so they must have some redeeming qualities.

You must lead a miserable life when all you can do is run down a couple of teenagers and mock their appearance.

Sarah Palin is does not put country first. It has always been Sarah first, even before her family. If she becomes President, then I know we have lost our minds. It is bejound me to understand what the people see in her. To me she is just a mocking bully, who likes to put down the President every chance she gets. It will be interesting when it is turn on her, and she is criticized, disrespected, lied about and mocked constantly I don't they she will be able to handle it. Then she can always quit, and be rewarded. Americans seems to like people who are losers, and don't want to do anything, get attention. Look at the Congress. They just elected a bunch of attention seekers, with no substance. Time will tell, if they know anything, beyond their talking points.

The Republicans have systematically destroyed the educational system in order to lower the IQs of Americans in the hopes that it would help them in presidential elections. They still have about 20 years of work if they want to make America dumb enough to vote for Palin.

This comment is serious? She ran for vice president. Participated in a few debates. Went on numerous news and talk shows. Took a ton of questions, easy and hard. Answered some well, answered others horribly. Think what you will about Sarah Palin, but the fact is, she has more courage than you ever will by doing what she has done and is doing. She knows she isn't the most briliant lady in the world, but the all those "brilliant" people out there are, for the most part, sitting on their asses telling the world what an idiot she is while she is actually out trying to do something. Right or wrong, she doesn't back down because she knows the majority of people do exactly what you do - bitch and moan, but never take care your hand out of the popcorn bucket or drop the remote to make any sort of difference yourself.

Surg - where's the stupidity in the comment? Did she not run for VP? Participate in debates? Go on talk shows and news shows? Do the majority of Americans bitch and moan, or do they actually get out there and do something? Those are observations on my part. Prove to me she didn't do any of those things and I'll reconsider my viewpoint. It's easy to criticize in this country. In fact, next to baseball, I'm pretty sure it's our favorite pasttime. No doubt Sarah has her faults, but she tried. And she hasn't gone away.

Da noid - so she quit as Governor. One could say she is more of a force now than she was as governor. Good or bad, she didn't go away. You say she quit. She might say she chose her battle. Either way, her skin is in the game. Where is yours?

That is so funny.. she is more of a "force"?? She chose her "battle"? What kind of an argument is that? Throw a word salad together with a closing accusation of "well, she is doing something, and since you aren't (although you don't KNOW that as a fact)" you think you win the argument. Funny.

If you were serious about what is in the best interest of the country, why don't you and those who think like you make a case howshe is qualified? And be truthful in what you say - "Go on talk shows and news shows"? Really - she went on precious few outside Fox and did next to nothing to really engage in substantive discussion. Fox babied her - is that what we should demand of our leader? to be babied by the news media ?(as bad as all the media is to their corporate kings). The truth is she couldnt handle a low-expectation interview by Couric and went into hiding - she is still there and only tweets and goes on Fox news. This isnt about Obama - make a case she is really qualified - that she has the intellect and the experience to lead this country. If you have no greater expectation than that what she is showing, god help us all for people like you will certainly doom this country.

Bob - I'm not arguing whether she is or isn't qualified to run the country. I responded to a post saying she has never put herself in a position where she has been asked tough questions. I beleive she has been in that position.

As for winning the argument, I did win. Because nobody argued the point that she hasn't been in a position where she had to answer tough questions. I never argued that she was qualified for President or the best candidate, you seemed to just naturally assume that's what I was saying. Perhaps if more people could stay on topic, we could actually make some progress.

But my fear would be that it wouldn't matter to the sub 100 IQ crowd that love her. They would vote for her no matter what and we could be stuck with a President dumber than Bush.

Don, after watching GW give speeches that sounded like he was just woken up in the middle of the night with a hangover, I will take a person that can read a prompter any day. What an embarrassment he was. By the way did you forget that he came in with surplus and left the economy in a mess with a huge debt. Are you just seeing a black man? Because GW was an embarrassment or should be to any one white as I am.

I find it absolutely hilarious that any person who voted for George "How many is a Brazilian?" Bush would ever, I mean EVER, criticize somebody else over their ability to construct a sentence. There is no better example of how utterly rudderless a President becomes when off book than GWB. Absolute deer in the headlights.

I seem to remember all Presidential hopefuls being off teleprompter during the debates, and Obama running circles around the competitiion. The reason people like Louisiana Don don't understand him is more a measure of their comprehension than of Obama's words. He constructs infinitely more complex sentences than his forebear, which inevitably results in more time hunting for the right word, which people whose knuckles drag along the ground mistake for being helpless without a teleprompter. And unlike GWB, some of those words Obama uses are actually more than two syllables.

LouisianaDan - If you knew anything you would know that every President since and including Ronald Regan used teleprompters. This is nothing new. Ironically, President Obama participated in over a dozen debates during his candidacy and not one teleprompter was used.

PS. And I don't think he had to write his CORE values on his hand for easy reference, either.

The reason we think you are stupid Don is because you support someone who derides people with a college education as "elites." The American University system has been around for centuries now and is a model for the world over. The brightest minds from all over the world you often find were educated in either American or British universities. And yet this woman dismisses one of our country's greatest institutions as a breeding ground for "Elites" essentially sending the message that a college education is something to be ashamed of, not something to be proud of. I'm sorry, but that is f*cking disgusting.

My father was the staunchest Republican I've ever known, and from day 1 he impressed upon me over and over the importance of a college education. So much so that if I decided not to go to college, he would have forced me out on my own right after high school. Compare that example of responsible parenting and leadership to the example Palin is setting, where teen pregnancy makes someone a hero and a college degree is disposable. She says she is all about family, yet she is teaching her children to reach for the remote control instead of the stars.

Yes and I'm retired from the US Army and my views are totally opposite. But I respect your opinion. I received an email from a friend yesterday saying that Pres. Obama will not allow a COLA for the military in 2012. Typical unfounded information from the right. Truth is he wants a 1.5% COLA plus 4% BAH. I receive emails from friends (still) who are spreading lies to defeat our President in 2012. In every case I reply with facts that prove them wrong. Is that the way to win the Presidency? Is glorification of Sara Palin (A TV star with $ signs in her eyes) indicative of the GOP efforts to "Take America Back" the way to defeat Pres. Obama? I hope not for the sake of all of us. With all of the serious problems we had when he took office and of the problems that continue to pile up (ie. Korea etc.) I myself would have hung up on my supporters and walked away. But unlike Ms. Palin he gives a lot of thought to his decisions and is facing those problems head on. (you will not find one mispelled word in my post, and I am a Democrat as always, among many)

Louisiana - here you go - making up statistics. Not even close to 70% of Americans are against "liberal" views. Most accept that both sides have something to offer and liberals have a great deal to offer. You must fit in the 2% that consider themselves to be the majority. Get a clue - you aren't.

Here we go again. If we don't think like you , we are stupid. Not everyone is a Liberal, remember, we are the ones on Nov 2nd that said NO to your liberal policies.

Let's see. Sharron Angle, as a representative of the Tea Party, wanted to privatize the VA and end Medicare and Social Security. Was that on the right side of the American people? Don, run for office and propose starting another pointless war. Was that on the right side of the American people?

Hamletrules....typical Liberal BS....Is that all you got? Why is that Liberals cannot tolerate anyone who disagrees with them? I thought they were the party of tolerance and acceptance and blah blah blah..I guess that only applies if you have the same view points as they do...again typical Liberal bs.

Maybe old Don isn't so dumb after all. He took a thread about Palin and turned it into "But Obama....".

It's not that you disagree Don, it's because you spray the word Liberal around as if it has a specific meaning, when obviously no group is of just one mind. I have many conservative friends whom I'm able to amicably disagree with because they don't just spout whatever their mouthpiece Beck or Limbaugh told them, they demonstrate that they've actually come to their opinions due to their own analysis rather than some knee-jerk aversion to the word Liberals.
