Ensign says he's no longer target of DOJ probe

Will embattled GOP Sen. John Ensign pull off a David Vitter and win re-election in 2012, despite the news last year that he had an affair with an aide (who happened to be the wife of his administrative assistant). Well, he appears to have cleared an important hurdle.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal:

Nevada's Republican Sen. John Ensign said he no longer is the target of an investigation by the Department of Justice related to an alleged coverup of an affair with the wife of a former top aide.

"This is an early Christmas statement," Ensign said in the hallway of one of the Senate buildings. He added that the Justice Department was "exhaustive" in the information they asked him to provide for the probe.

The Justice Department probe could have landed Ensign in prison. The Nevada Republican still faces a fast-moving Senate Ethics Committee investigation, which could lead to sanctions and even his expulsion from Congress.

A prepared statement from Ensign's office reads as follows:

"Senator Ensign is certainly pleased that the Department of Justice no longer views him as a target in their investigation, and has long-stated that he acted in accordance with the law. Our office and the Senator have been cooperative with this investigation, and it's important that the truth in this matter is finally coming to light. It is the Senator's hope that the Ethics Committee soon follows suit. Senator Ensign looks forward to continuing his hard work on behalf of the people of Nevada."

So do the democrats, so get over it.

What about Sen. Edwards having an affair while his wife was undergoing cancer treatment?

JFK had an affair with Marilyn Monroe.

It's fairly common. Actually, I would rather have an honest 'womanizer' rather than the corrupt likes of Rangel, Pelosi, and others in office any day.

Then tell us how you feel about the creepy Christian Family Values freaks... would ya?

Like Larry Craig & Mark Foley.. who stalk men and then go home to sleep with their wives?

I didn't say anything about 'Christian values'. All I said was that I would rather have an honest womanizer than the current batch of corrupt politicians we have.

Why do you worry about the affairs when there are things like tax evasion and misappropriation of the nation's monies being condoned by those currently in control of Congress? Or is it that you wish you were in some sort of relationship and had some real excitement in your life, Feisty?

Ummm...I don't know...maybe because I'm sick and tired of the double talking hypocrites that you & your ilk adhere to?

Just a thought...

hmmmmmmmmmmmm compare the two, Ensign, junior Senator and Rangel, Chairman of the House Ways and Means that writes the tax codes and he doesn't pay taxes on property for 7 years? Yeah, I see your point.

At least they pay for it:)

The Democrats want everyone else to pay their taxes, yet they find ways to avoid it, whether it is "I forgot"--Barbara Boxer, "I didn't realize I owed taxes for 17 years"--Charles Rangel, or "It was cheaper to park it there"--John Kerry.

I think the GOP learned from Clinton about infidelity, a lot less problems than tax evasion.

BB62 too bad the Repubs didn't learn how to be fiscally responsible from Clinton!

The 'Family Values' mantra should be dropped by Repubs.....unless the meaning means nothing!

You must be referring to Larry (toe tapper) Craig and the Ted Haggards of the world... Right? lol

You know the good Christians who get off on preying on other men... and then going home to sleep with the Little Lady...

How on earth did Clinton do anything fiscally responsible? He was forced to move to the center by the republicans. And it was the dot com boom that generated the extra tax revenue, not any of his policies.

and start over. I know ,let's put 535 of them in Gitmo and rendition the others who are retired but still created this mess at Abu Girab And lets just execute the investment bankers like they did in the french revolution. Let the middle class once again rule this country.

    • When is he up for re-election?
    • Any chance Sharron Angle will run for his seat and win the primary?
    • Then the Democrats could run just about anyone against Angle and win the seat for the DEMS!

Well-Iguess what i find the most repulsive, is that he gave the hush money to his parents to pay the mistresses husband.  He had to involve his elderly parents in his illicit screw up.  Stand up and be a man.  God said honor your mother and father.  You won't get this Nevadans vote.

What about Ensign getting a job for his lover's son? Surly that was illegal let alone getting a job for her husband against the rules of ethics? This guy stinks to high heaven! I believe Senators should serve no more than two terms! That way we weed them out and their forced to do right in the first term or they don't get a second try!

Yuppers - the same crime gets different treatment. It's OK if it's a Republican. The retribution never ends if it is a Democrat. I agree with some of the previous commenters: you EXPECT this kind of behavior from people who pander to the wealthy. Show mw a morally-upright Republican, and I'll show you a mislabelled Democrat!

      Reply#13 - Wed Dec 1, 2010 9:18 PM EST

this just wasn't about an affair. it was about fixing up his lover's husband with a job to shut them up. it was about his parents giving his lover about $96K to shut up. it was about a cover-up you twits...not sex.

Sen. John Ensign is a piece of garbage. He is one of the "C" Street crowd that thinks they are above the rest of us. If nothing else we know he cheated on his wife with his Chief of Staff's wife. Had his family attempt to bribe the Chief of Staff and his wife. Then got the guy a Lobbyist job in clear violation of Campaign Finance. Why is it when a Democrat gets caught cheating on his wife he resigns or Impeached and when a Republican does it he gets Re-Elected. Oh right, they are the party of family values.

Good try but this article is about one of yours that's @!$%#ing his chief legislative aides wife. The oh so honorable republicans and their family values of infidelity and adultery. Lying scumbags is what I call hypocrites that hold the entire country hostage so they can get tax cuts for their own damn selves. Sorry assed @!$%#s. Ensign thinks it's over but the actions of the Ethics Committee "could lead to sanctions and even his expulsion from Congress" The whole republican party is full of liars and cheats who claim to have some moral superiority. That's fine 'cause they're giving the Dems the presidency in 2012.
