Obama agenda: Deal-maker-in-chief?

“President Barack Obama is hoping to reprise his role as deal-maker-in-chief in the budget standoff simmering on Capitol Hill. But his eleventh-hour entry into the debate leaves him in a far less desirable position than when he deftly ushered through a bipartisan tax deal in December: The only conversations happening right now between Senate Democratic and House Republican leaders are about whose fault it will be if the negotiations fail,” Roll Call writes.

The Hill frames it this way: “President Obama assumed responsibility for avoiding a government shutdown Wednesday, ordering the White House to find a deal with Republicans on spending despite the growing backlash from the left over cuts to cherished programs.”

“Defense Secretary Robert Gates told the House Appropriations defense subcommittee that the U.S. military could establish a no-fly zone over Libya, but cautioned that doing so would first require widespread air strikes across that nation,” The Hill writes. Gates said, “If it’s ordered, we can do it.” But, he added, it would be “a big operation in a big country.”

Sounds like Obama needs to play nursemaid again. The Congressional leadership needs to work with the President to get this budget done and move on. They need to stop wasting time on the other crappy legislation they have been trying to ram through and get serious about a jobs bill.

Despite the endless comparisons to the Clinton-Gingrich showdown, the willingness of the Obama Administration to defy critics on the left shows that the polls are very worrisome for Obama on spending issues. A government shutdown would be very volatile, and could possibly hurt Obama badly.

Why did Pelosi not get this done last year? She was derelict in her duty and now we are faced with this showdown. It will continue with the FY2012 Budget as well as raising the Debt Ceiling. The budget ax is going to fall somewhere because the Republicans will not continue to fund the government at this level. They were sent to dismantle Obamas agenda and that is what they are doing. I think the President will be re elected he will be the true minority party as the Republicans will control the House and Senate he will be forced to compromise or he will become the party of NO. What will he do then when he squandered his opportunity with majorities in both houses? The can cannot be kicked again.
