Another bad wrinkle for McCaskilll

We wrote this morning that the unfolding flap over Sen. Claire McCaskill’s private plane – and the back taxes she owed on it – is a major problem for the Missouri Democrat, who would have faced a difficult 2012 re-election even absent controversy over her use of taxpayer money for political travel.

The story is particularly tough for McCaskill – a former state auditor and self-described watchdog who has styled her work on congressional oversight issues after the Truman Committee.  Her previous scrutiny of perpetrators of government waste means that the spotlight is all the hotter when it’s pointed back on her.

Enter this new wrinkle in the story (via Politico):

More than six years ago, Claire McCaskill was embroiled in another fight over the political use of airplanes -- except in that case, she was raising the issue against her opponent.

During the crescendo of her primary challenge to Gov. Bob Holden in July 2004, then-state auditor McCaskill ran an ad showing an airplane circling around the outline of Missouri, slamming the governor for "taking over 300 taxpayer funded trips on the state airplane.”

And here’s a link to an AP story at the time, in which McCaskill called Holden’s use of the plane to fly to non-political events the “kind of things that make taxpayers raise their eyebrows.”

How did this article make it on to MSNBC? The bad behavior of Democrats is supposed to be ignored, or at least excused.

If she was a Republican, "Republican" or "GOP" would have been the first word in the headline, and it wouldn't have been simply portrayed as a "wrinkle" but rather a serious criminal offense.

No difference from Rangle, Waters and many more on both sides of the aisle. They just got caught.

Time to add an addemdum to the Congressional code of ethics, if there is such an animal, that if caught and censored, then away with the pension, the perks and the benefits.

Notice how the liberals always gravitate away from the issue of the article. W. Goin just can't help himself. How about we go after Obama for the constitutional crime he just committed by violating the War Powers Act... He did NOT have authorization to bomb Libya but yet liberals like you have to change the subject.

Stick to the subject or keep your off topic comments to your self.

This is about a DEMOCRAT not paying taxes... again! Democrats are famous for wanting more tax money from others but fail to pay the taxes themselves! If the liberals are so inclined (I know they aren't)... justify the criminal actions of your leaders by not making comparisons.

Of course, Republicans are never guilty of not paying their taxes, huh? Randy Cunningham (who failed to pay taxes on the milloions in bribes he received) must have been a Democrat I guess. And John McCain (), Sarah Palin(), Duncan Hunter, Christine "the Witch" O'Donnell, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ed Rollins (owed over $1 million in back taxes) and Newt Gingrich, I guess they are all Democrats too. Yeah, right!

Brianb - I was responding to bill, who suggests this is strictly a problem for democrats. And I guess now responding to you, who seems to think the same thing (at 1.11). The article is about a legislator not paying taxes, one that happens to be a democrat.

The personal attack tells me you can't hang with an intelligent discussion on the issues; or do you feel that your lack of education is an excuse for your failure to understand that I was responding to bill? Everyone should pay their fair share, and if they cheat they should be prosecuted, whether they be democrats or republicans, citizens or foreigners, powerful or powerless, educated or clueless.

NonWatcher - sorry to disapoint you, but I am actually laughing while watching the liberals squirm. My BP is just fine. Your only defense is to point to others and their failures. Talk about typical left wing crap and spin. You would do much better by saying McCaskill did wrong instead of defending her by pointing to others failures.... Had you and the other liberals not fallen into your typical BS line of defense, you wouldn't be eating so much crow. Now you have stepped in it and it tickles me.

Bush? Take your little mousey thing and scroll back to post 1.7 and notice how a liberal had to bring Bush into this discussion. Got it? Good... now learn how to debate without looking like a deer in the headlights.

Educated Thinker - How about using a name when addressing someone's comments? This way everyone would be educated about who you are responding to. I would have avoided making a comment you made to someone else, and if I disagreed, I might make a response to add to the debate. If you notice, I always include a name when directing my comment to someone else... it lends to understanding why I comment.

Educated Thinker - Are you that desperate for attention that you feel the need to continue this? I followed it. Again I will state that liberals always detract from the context... notice the word context... by deflecting any democrat misdeed through pointing fingers at other people. It seems to be the only way a liberal can attempt to win. Well let me educate you... by doing your typical liberal operating procedure, you lose the debate. Don't you realize that those of us on the right know this? Are you that blind, or so full of yourself that you can't recognize it?

The title of the article is "Another Bad Wrinkle for McCaskill." The story goes on to tell how she failed to pay the tax on an airplane. Liberals have to bring Bush and others into it because there is NO defense for McCaskill not paying the tax. The story does not mention others not paying theirs. When it comes to taxes, democrats are always willing to raise them on others but fail to pay them at their convenience. When they get caught, liberals all rally to their defense by saying that republicans have failed to pay taxes too. My point is... SOOOO WHAT! How does that add to the fact that the person in the artlcle was caught? Since democrats represent raising taxes on everyone else, shouldn't they not be hypocrites and pay theirs? It seems that republicans get skewered when one of them commits a moral crime. Fair play is fair play....

Since you claim to be educated, it sure seems you like to overlook the obvious. Maybe it's all that education you possess. It gets in the way of common sense.

Wow, everyone on the right thinks McCaskill should go to prison for what every other citizen would get a fine for, and everyone on the left fell for their spin job and hides from the true story. Come on people, this is a minor transgression if she (like Rangle) pays the taxes and fines. It is only a prison offense if she refuses to pay or if she committed some kind of fraud like putting her airplane in the freezer to hide it from the IRS. Yes, he was a Democrat, but it was a nicer jab than going after Tom Delay.

Let the voters decide. Remember, they still re-elected Rangle after he was censured by the house.

I don't have to respond to 1.2. He's correct. Democrats have a long standing history of not paying their taxes, getting caught and suffering no harm from it. Democrats are the party of tax increases on the middle class and the rich so when they get caught not paying theirs, they expose their hypocracy. They lie about it at every turn. I know 1.23 went way over your head... I think you wasted your money on whatever education you have... One might have thought the there was enough hypocrisy in Washington, D.C. to go around the nation, but judging from the comments on the Vine, it appears that the leadership displayed by the Elected Leaders of our country has been extremely successful. Maybe that is why we hate them so much; we have become them in ourselves. If somebody in the opposition party messes up, boy, we need a criminal prosecution right fast! However, when it is somebody in our own party (or, preferred party) that messes up, it is all the fault of that "politically orientated lame-stream media!"

Maybe each of us should take responsibility for our own actions before we demand the same from others; that is "real" leadership.

Its funny that the regulars aren't posting today and slapping each other on the back. I am surprised they ran such an article on clearly a liberal site. Just goes to show all of us that both parties lie to get elected and then once in office feel entitled to do whatever they want. Real good reason to have term limits. And I am so tired of hearing about how the democrats are for the common man. What a load of crap. You can put a democrat and a republican in a sack and shake it up and then when you pour them out ones just as likely to come out first as the other. And yes, as a state auditor she definitely should have known better. By the way, her husband bought the plane.

When she was our Prosecuting Attorney her 1st husband was a drug addict,...should that have been her fault, too?

I doubt if you can put a positive spin on this. Most people are going to look at this as another Congressional leader that attempted to hide assets. You and I would be in jail for this, and as for a Federal Tax issue, I would think that it is as well as a state tax issue. Plus, if you look at the required income statements members must file with government, her ommission can place her in a bad position with her peers.

But I also feel she should have the right to defend herself. File charges and have her prove her position.

You can keep repeating the lie; but that doesn't make it true.

She failed to report an asset in her personal property inventory.

When it was discovered, the tax was paid. This is a STATE issue - not a felony. This isn't a DEFENSE, these are the FACTS.

Don't worry, McCaskill will pay. She will not get re-elected. But to continue the drum beat of Throw her in Jail, etc - well that is intellectually dishonest. She did not commit a CRIME. And she has since PAID the Tax.

I don't know what I have said that appears to be a positive spin. And I do not believe I have defended her other than she was ignorant in not following up on her own to make sure her asset listings were in order.

I love that Elliot Spitzer stepped down but David Vitter and John Ensign were entitled to keep their jobs after committing ALLEGED felonies. And it is also great to see the justice crowd has convicted her and sentenced her based on the flimsy details provided in this article.

Our personal property tax form says right on it:

List your personal property (cars, boats, etc). My form from last year already had my cars and things listed, with a column for Still Own, Sold, Donated and then space to enter new acquisitions. I get that everybody needs this to be a big deal and there is no doubt it was wrong and should have caught; but you are all sounding pretty petty and spiteful. Was the tax owed? Yes. Was the tax paid? Yes. Was it FRAUD or ILLEGAL or NEFARIOUS? I just don't think so. Both spouse signatures are NOT required on this Personal Property Declaration form. So,...IT IS POSSIBLE that it is exactly as it appears.

Personally it does not matter to me that she has since paid the fine. What does matter is that she is the chairperson on the Committee for Govt' waste and as such, it is her job going after people who did just what she did. Did she turn herself in or realize the mistake, No she waited until she got caught before she paid up. And she also accused her opponent in 2002 of doing what she did and won. Only fair that she resign. BTW all politicians who commit crimes should be forced to leave office, because they have broken their trust with the American people. That is just my opinion.

Richard, I agree with you and voted for you.

I have a dog in this fight. I like her. But it is a class A screw up. And yes, these types of things should equal resignation.

I just got pissy when people started wanting to throw her into prison. Come on now.

And while we are on the topic, perhaps we have the legislators that we have because those with tough (arrogant) hides are willing to run and the good folks choose to stay home? Our elections are a joke because our candidates are a joke.

I guess that is a discussion for another day.

When are people ever going to understand that a POLITICIAN is a POLITICIAN and they ALL will say and do anything for a vote. Show me one that do not have skeletons in his/her closet. This is not surprising at all, it is par for the course. All in the life of politics.

People had better stop putting all of their trust into politicians, they will let you down everytime and this includes Obama afterall, he is a politician.

I guess all you self-righteous liberals are finding out daily, whenever the media stop chasing Republicans around, that your politician's shyt stinks too. If the media would spend 25% of the time looking at Democrats instead of Republicans, they will uncover a lot of not so great endeavors.

The media loves a good scandal and doesn't discriminate by party. How did this one come out, anyway? Obviously, the media is not protecting McCaskill. Also witness Tom Daschle, John Edwards, and Bill Clinton. Not to mention Gary Hart, who dared the media to catch him at it, and they took him up on it.

So your claim that the media protect democrats while going after republicans is demonstrably false, even if you just look at this particular situation. But then again what else is new?

And what do you think about the republican state senator in Wisconsin, whose mistress got a cushy government job and a big raise, while he hasn't been living in his own district. I think we should invalidate any votes that were taken while he was ineligible to serve, and start over again after he is replaced. It might not change the outcome all by itself, but the recalls will probably do that.

          See ya.

Good of you to admit that there might be a conservative/TP/GOP/extremist right wing abortion clinic bomber that could be unethical. now, could you convince the rest of the righties that they aren't perfect just because they know how to vote "R?"

McCaskill owns the plane. It's not a government plane. The problem is the taxes, and billing her senate office for the trips she took on it that were political, not just a part of her job.

The plane, a 2001 single-engine turbo-prop Pilatus PC-12, is hangared at Spirit of St. Louis Airport, McCaskill confirmed. But it’s owned by Timesaver LLC, a Delaware-based corporation created in July 2006 during her Senate run against Republican incumbent Jim Talent.

Many companies incorporate in Delaware because of its lax tax laws and business-friendly environment; the state doesn’t charge a personal property tax. But McCaskill was still on the hook in Missouri because the Show Me State requires aircraft owners to pay personal property taxes in the county where the plane is physically hangared.

vern and non - the point than, is that when Bush was president and gas prices got that high, the media was CRUCIFYING him over it, on a DAILY basis. Now that Obama is president, the president they helped get to office, there's nary a PEEP from those same news media outlets about the exact same gas price levels.

But than I guess neither of you see the problem with that.

Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Claire has worked long and hard for the people of Missouri in local office and for the U.S. in national office. It seems this may have been a plane owned more for her husbands benefit that she also used. The taxes should have been paid on time and this has been remedied. I can see that being able to come and go when necessary would benefit the public as well as the office-holder without having to deal with airline schedules and airports shenanigans. The rules provide that travel expenses are reimbursed, private or public airplane.

She has not worked long and hard for me. She has done the exact opposite. During the HCR debate, she repeatedely stated she would not vote for the bill if it was not deficit neutral OR threatened to further increase health care costs for Missouri families. However, when I wrote to contact her regarding concerns over the HCR debate, especially concerning the double counting of the Medicare savings, recieved no reponse at all versus Roy Blunt who took the time out to call me regarding my letters. Her repsponse was loud enought, a vote in favor of HCR.

And now, charging tax payers money for a trip she should not have charged them for. Not paying personal property taxes in St. Louis county, all while I work my butt off to support my family and pay my taxes on time. She was an auditor in Missouri and cant' even make sure her taxes are done correctly! Get her out of office. She needs to resign!

          W. Goin what war crimes? My understanding is that everything they did was legal and the appropriate congressional committee knew with the exception of Pelosi who was undergoing botox treatments at the time. BTW President Obama has kept most of the previous administrations policies including wiretapping, gitmo, etc and even has his own overflying and attacking with drones inside pakistan without Pakistani approval. That would be considered a war crime since we are not at war with pakistan but we are killing people inside their sovereign borders.

This isn't the only scandal with Senator McCaskill's name written on it; there's another scandal brewing at American Airlines as well.

You see, Senator McCaskill involved herself in a union officer election without disclosing that she was close personal friends with an executive appointee to the incumbent administration. In short, the senator brokered a deal with American Airlines whereby unprecedented voting rights were given to 410 flight attendants and a recall extension given to 800 more. Those 1,200 flight attendants were then encouraged by the incumbent union governance to withhold votes during the primary election so as to support the incumbent during the runoff.

What's so startling about this scandal is the fact that most of the American Airlines executives that participated in it donated to the senator's 2008 campaign fund. Read about it:
