Obama agenda: Did Wednesday give him more breathing room with his base?

“By comparing Republicans to his children and challenging them to “get it done,” Obama might have mollified Democrats to the point that he can negotiate more with Republicans on taxes, these political strategists say,” The Hill writes.

“At a fundraiser for his 2012 re-election campaign in the pivotal state of Pennsylvania, Obama said he was busy ‘attacking the country's problems’ while his Republican opponents were targeting him,” Reuters writes. “‘I've got a day job. I've got other things to do. But while I'm working, there are going to be candidates parading around the country. And they're going to do what they do, which is, they're going to attack,’ he told nearly 800 supporters at a downtown Philadelphia hotel, where tickets were $100 and up.”

The Philly Inquirer: “The 44th president of the United States came to town Thursday to raise a pile of campaign money, with a side of John's Water Ice. Lemon, if you must know. “

“First lady Michelle Obama visited Boston and Vermont yesterday, as she and President Obama made a final dash for cash before the close of a fund-raising quarter that will provide the first relative measure of the strength of the 2012 White House contenders,” the Boston Globe reports, adding, “The first lady’s stops yesterday were expected to raise more than $1.2 million for the Democratic National Committee, whose primary focus now is ensuring the president’s reelection. The president had his own fund-raising trip to Philadelphia.”

The Washington Post: “Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner, an architect of the Obama administration’s economic strategy, has told the president that he may seek as soon as this summer to resign, according to people familiar with the matter.”

Yes it did ...no one is listening to the republicans anymore..even their oldest voters . are no longer falling for the fake "outrage". The American people have just realized the republicans are trying to ruin the economy and of course give their "friends" the free ride tax wise ! Obama did his job ...he just woke up ...both sides of the isle !

If no one is listening why is his approval rating falling? Maybe nobody is listening because he is not saying anything.

Obama never does his job. That would require his taking a stance. Not gonna happen. Whichever way Obama leans will cost him votes. The result is that everything he does, or says, must first go through the vote filter. Will it gain him votes, or cost him votes??

Gay marriage, Israel, Illegal immigration, deficit spending, energy,....you name it. He was the same Obama in the Senate. Just vote "present" and avoid criticism.

Always campaigning, never leading. That's what you get with a "community organizer" AKA telephone-pole flyer stapler.

Poor little GOP/TP and Edward they got their feelings hurt because the President called them out Wednesday on what they actually, are lazy. He also pointed out their trying to ruin the economy for their own political gain. Man you guys are thin skinned. You can't tell your lies anymore and hope nobody notices. The country is on to your lies.

O.K. I know what he wants from the Republicans why don't I know what he is willing to give up. Before he has been more than willing to give up programs that were due to expire anyway and base his projections on extremely optimistic data. So what now.

what is he giving up? Pay attention - over 80% is cutting spending - only about 17% is taxes.

Which of course the Republicans are not willing to give up.

    #2.3 - Fri Jul 1, 2011 2:50 PM EDT

We know he wants to cut deductions for corporate jets and we know he wants to end tax breaks for the wealthy. We know he wants to change deductions for all businesses - that is for Obama and those are some of the details for what he wants in tax increases. For cuts we know he is proposing 83% in cuts in spending. My question is what spending is he cutting. I don't know anymore than I did before your reply.

it must be hard to be a liberal president surrounded by republican advisors? perhaps a new liberal treasurer will be a blessing. we must invest in the people in this country and not invest in people of other countries?

Look at what is happening at the state level:

In Maine we now have a majority Republican legislature and a Teapublican governor. In the past six months we have seen the following changes: health care providers must give the same discount on fees to large insurance companies as they do to smaller ones, health insurance companies can charge higher premiums to rural customers, the legalization of firework sales over the objections of the fire marshall and medical groups, raising the speed limit to 75 on some rural roads, rolling back environmental protections, including regulations for building on sand dunes, legalization of table games at casinos, freezing cost of living raises and increasing required pension contributions for public workers, passing these "savings" on to the wealthiest Mainers in a historic tax cut, raising the ceiling for estate taxes from no taxes paid on the first million, to no taxes paid on the second million, allowing charter schools, reducing government support for the development of alternative energy industries, allowing employers to schedule teens for longer and later hours.

And this does not include the "changes" that were beaten back through Democratic opposition and public outcry: repeal of the ban on BPA in children's sippy cups, allowing billboards along the highway again, more restrictions on abortion, repealing the bottle deposit law, the creation of a $5.25 "teen wage," and dismantling environmental protection agencies.

Oh, I forgot, in line with the national right-wing agenda, our Republican lawmakers also repealed our 40 year old same day voter registration law, a policy that had never resulted in voter fraud, but apparently was repealed in order to disenfranchise younger voters, who are more apt to wait for election day to register, and who it is feared are more likely to vote Democratic.

      Update:

The right wing Maine Christian Civic League applied pressure to Republicans in the legislature to throw out a pending bill to educate students on bullying, on grounds that it threatened the bullys' first amendment right to free speech.

      Amy,

Really, to disenfranchise young voters, where do you get this information. They have plenty of time to register if they truly wanted to vote. Life lessons, be responsible for your actions.

Amy I taught my children not to wait until the day they had to turn in their homework to do it when they were in grade school. I think young voters can handle not waiting until the same day to register to vote if they are that passionate about their right to vote. Just making another excuse for poor time management.

      My two cents.

As a election judge where I reside, I think it would be a bit difficult to allow for same day registration. I've had to turn people away who were not registered and claimed I was violating their rights, but I think there is a bit of responsibility that has to play into all of this.

My one fault with our system in my state is that some people, like students may still be registered in their college town/county. I had to turn some of those away as well. I would think that disallow partially those who are registered to vote for municipal or county issues if not registered in that county but let them vote for state wide office or state wide resolutions as they are registered, albeit in a different county. As systems are electronic there is a check in place so that people can't vote in two locations.

I was glad to work with GOP people in my county to support Rachel's challenge. Being used as an anti-bullying tool to help kids. Taken from diary of the first girl killed at Columbine that spoke about daily acts of kindness that kids could do for each other. Pledges for kids to think before they act in bully type tactics.

Just one example. What if your only income was the family farm that was acquired by you ancestor for a few dollars an acre. What if you were in dire need of cash and the value of that farm had increased from almost nothing to 3 million dollars. Other than that you are dirt poor. How would you feel about contributing 60 to 90 percent of that sale. I have traveled one of the rural roads in Maine. It is called Interstate 95.

You are so correct. Time to invest in America. Time to pull out of these other countries. Terrorists can be handled through good intel and precision strikes. Obama has proved once again that he AWOL on the economy. He has proven that his "day job" is campaigning and raising cash for his reelection and not sitting down with both parties in the room and pounding our a debt reference to Congress as being children not doing their homework, the real truth is he is a child polician who has no clue how to do his homework! He was probably thinking to himself "How dare a silly little thing like debt get in the way of my raising money for his campaign!" He said "He is here!", so why is he is Philadelphia? Typical Obama, make a speech, and then leave town! I guess he thinks that leaving it to Reid and Pelosi is the way to get something done...NOT! If the Congress does finally get a deal done, he will surely prance and have another little speech to tell the nation, "Yep, I did it again!" what a joke! November 2012 cannot get here soon enough. American, you need to rise up again and vote this guy out of office next year! Oh and take the Democrats with him!

Shhhhhh. MSNBC didnt mention that President Obama came to Philadelphia to get campaign money.... from the boss of MSNBC !

David Cohen, a longtime Democratic operative, has successfully sheparded the regulatory review of Comcast’s merger with NBC Universal earlier this year.

Of course, the direct money Obama gets in campaign contributions, pales in comparison to the value of allowing the former real-news network NBC, to become the official Obama-shill network.
