Perry commits post-debate gaffe on Revolutionary War

HANOVER, NH — A relatively upbeat Rick Perry suffered a bit of a head-slapping gaffe in an appearance post-debate on the campus of Dartmouth College.

The Texas governor was comparatively energetic at his stop at the Beta Theta Pi fraternity on the Dartmouth College campus, taking questions on energy policy, Social Security, and states rights.

But he stumbled in his answer to a young woman's question about states' rights; Perry said that one of the "reasons we fought the revolution in the 16th century was to get away from that kind of onerous crown."

The Revolutionary War was fought in the 18th century.

At the beginning of his remarks, Perry told NBC News in answer to a question about the debate that the just-concluded event was "awesome."

"It was an awesome debate," he said.

NBC's Garrett Haake contributed from Hanover.

must have been a slow political news day for the liberal media to even report that! Or another weak effort to take attention away from the Fast and Furious or Solyndra scandals that are making life miserable for the administration these days!

The Revolutionary War was fought in the 18th century.

And it wasn't to ensure State's Rights. I see Conservatives popped right in here to try to minimize Perry's lack of knowledge...fact is, the guy knows less than Glenn Beck about history, though what he does know he gets just as wrong.

He was at a fraternity house and judging by some of these posts, the backslapping boys followed him here.

What is it with rt.wingers that they are so proud of being ignorant?

John B, Des Moines, IA "And it wasn't to ensure State's Rights."

The actual quote from the article was;

Perry said that one of the "reasons we fought the revolution in the 16th (18th) century was to get away from that kind of onerous crown."

What Perry said about the reason for the revolution was correct. What part do you disagree with?

So he was ask a question about states rights, and he went into a diatribe about the revolutionary war, and got that wrong to boot. Do any of these candidates have a clue what planet their on?

How about this gaffe.

Obama claims his parents, who supposedly met at a march in 1965, conceived a child, then magically traveled back in time to 1961 when Baby-O was born. Forget where he was born, he doesn't know when he was born.

Well Roy, after winning the Revolutionary War 2 centuries after Perry believed to be the case the landed gentry of America wanted to make George Washington king.

I don't think that little gaffe was newsworthy. 16th, 18th what makes the difference? At least he had a good time after the debate. He didn't seem to have a very good time at the debate.

Rick Perry is just George Bush by another name. In light of what happened to the U.S.A. under GWB's administration, why would anyone in their right mind want to repeat it?

The very definition of irony. First, one has to point out the mistake, then one must point out the correct answer to the mistake. Have Americans become so dumb that we need to tell them in what century the Revolution was fought?

The debate was awesome, but Rich Perry was not! He is proving to be a "suit." without much in content or substance when i t comes to having solutions to put on the table for debate. Maybe he needs to go back to Texas and admit that he is not ready to run for President any time soon. . Romney and Cain were fully engaged during the debate, and the first time, I began to believe that Romney is the guy to lead this country. He is clear, articulate, sound in his reasoning, and seems to understand the economic pain that our country is going throrugh right now. He is the anti-Obama! I also like Santorum... HE will not get the nomination, but he clearly should be a key player in the next Adminstration. Gingrich has so many ideas that havnig him in the next Adminstraation to open up our options on any subject to find new soltuions would be a clear benefit for the nation... won't be nominated for President however! I wouldn't trust Huntsman as far as I can throw him. He tries the cutezy jokes but his pompous demeanor totally discounts him in any way from being considered. Ron Paul is a guy that I can agree with about half of the time, but it is the other half that scares the crap out of me! Bachmann is toast but made some sound arguments during the debate... but has no chance of becoming President.!

Last night's debate commentator surely needs to retire back to his easy chair. It was surely embarrassing for Bloomberg Network to have him as its lead panel host. Then it was as if he would turn to the lady on his left and say, " and now over to my liberal lady host to ask the most liberal biased questions posssible and then argue with each debater who normally blew her liberal viewpoint out of the water!

All the debaters except Perry did well and presneted a very different view of how our ecomony can move forward and one that was very welcome after hearing all the crap out of thiss Administration and his cronies in the Senate! Just think by electing any Republican , we will not have to deal wiht slugs like Chu in Energy, Holder in Justice, and Obama in the White House. I was tickled when I heard that Bill Daley said he would step down after November 2012... YEAH... becuase your boss will be fired that same month!!!

It is important because the Republicans feel they own both that Revolution and the Constitution. When you press them, you find out that they do not know a thing about the history of this country. Perry is a "know nothing" but even more importantly, he, like Bush is happy with his own ignorance.

          Why does anyone support him?

It's surprising to me that this group of people who want Obama out so badly are having so much trouble finding someone good enough to beat him. I'm hoping he's re-elected and that we also get a democratic congress back so he can get something done instead of being stone walled at every turn. I think he spent too much time on health care when he had congress on his side and I'm betting he's learned that lesson. He'll make the right changes in the tax law, the right changes in social security and medicare, he'll get the country back to work and he'll do it in a way that is best for all the people not just a few rich folks. I say let him finish what he's started. I just hope that people see that the reason he's not getting things done right now is because of the republicans in the House that wont vote for the same things that they've supported in the past just because it would make him look good. Here's hoping they're voted right out of their jobs!!

the gaffe was really not that bad but isn't it funny that all of the Extreme Right wingers that are running or threatened to run like Palin, Perry, and Bachman all have some kind of issue with getting American History right? The only reason this is news worthy is because Perry is not really that sharp and does not have the ability to think on his feet. These things will continue to happen. I have watched him for more than 10 years here in Texas and he is constantly sticking his foot in his mouth. "Adios MOFO"

I'm counting on it - go occupiers, you are on the right side of the issue and history and I fully support you and the protest, plan to join you myself if you are still active in Nashville this weekend! time to bring all those mega wealthy liers down, I don't mind if someone is rich, I actually like for folks who work hard to become rich and think it is ok for them to pass their wealth down what I do mind is the fact that they are so greedy they kept their tax break instead of creating jobs with that money - so in the infamous words of Mr. wilson - mr./ms wealthy big shot: you Lie! And you and your wealthy buddies are pretty upset because you know your sins have found you out.

Whenever I hear someone say "It was AWESOME",  I think Valley Girl!  Not much up there, you know?  I've lived with Perry for the past 10 years (yes, unfortunately I live in Texas), and he's been poisonous for this state.  He would have been voted OUT if we had run=offs for Governor.  He merely garnered 38% of the popular vote this past election.  I was NOT a fan of GW Bush, but trust me,  if Perry were to win,  I'd sure miss Dubya!  Perry's the male version of Palin!

Hmmm he is pretty clueless isn't he. The constitution was created to bring power into a strong federal government, with protections. If the 'states rights' argument was valid, then the constitution would never have been written as the declaration of independence fixed that sucker up.
