End of war in Iraq is major promise kept for Obama

President Barack Obama's announcement Friday that all U.S. troops would leave Iraq by the end of 2011 marks the fulfillment of a major political promise Obama had made on the 2008 campaign trail.

The president announced his decision at an early afternoon press conference at the White House. It's in keeping with the timeline Obama first established in early 2009, when he first laid out a timetable for withdrawal.

The announcement comes Friday with a great amount of political import, though. Obama is keeping a major campaign promise -- he noted as much in his very first sentence at his press conference -- and he is building on a string of recent foreign policy successes -- the death yesterday of Libya's Moammar Khaddafy, most recently -- going into a re-election battle in which a top issue, jobs and the economy, may end up being a vulnerability for the president.

"As a candidate for president, I planned to bring the war in Iraq to a responsible end," Obama said Friday at the White House. "After taking office, I announced a new strategy that would end our combat mission in Iraq and remove all troops by the end of 2011.

"So today, I can report that, as promised, the rest of our troops in Iraq will come home by the end of the year," the president continued. "After nearly nine years, America's war in Iraq will be over."

Those lines were promoted by Obama's campaign Twitter account, underscoring the cross-secting political and military undercurrents guiding today's announcement.

Obama's initial opposition to the war was one of the key parts of his record that propelled him past Hillary Clinton in the 2008 Democratic primary; in the general election, Obama had been pitted against Arizona Sen. John McCain, a top proponent of the war, and the subsequent "surge" of U.S. troops to help secure Iraq despite its destabilizing insurgency.

"The differences on Iraq in this campaign are deep. Unlike Senator John McCain, I opposed the war in Iraq before it began, and would end it as president," Obama wrote in a 2008 op-ed in the New York Times.

And for as much friendly fire that the president has taken from the left for unfinished campaign trail promises, Obama's move to withdraw troops marks a moment of deep satisfaction for his base, whom he's courting again heading into next fall's election.

It also helps burnish Obama's foreign policy credentials on top of a string of accomplishments this year. Khaddafy's death Thursday in Libya provided some measure of validation of the president's measured strategy toward the rebellion there. U.S. predator drones also managed to assassinate a major al-Qaeda figure, Anwar al-Awlaki, last month. And Obama's scored perhaps no greater achievement than the successful killing of Osama bin Laden earlier this year in Pakistan -- something to which Obama made reference Friday.

"I would note that the end of war in Iraq reflects a larger transition: the tide of war is receding," Obama said. "The drawdown in Iraq allowed us to focus our fight against al-Qaeda and achieve major victories against its leadership, including Osama bin Laden."

He noted the additional transition in Afghanistan in a move toward bringing troops home from that part of the world, too.

"When I took office, roughly 180,000 troops were deployed in both these wars. By the end of this year, that number will be cut in half," he said. "And make no mistake, it will continue to go down."

President Obama has been 100% correct regarding Iraq from the very beginning!

Tell us again how he is soft on foreign policy?

Rough couple of days for the right wingers! lol

Not to worry, with the current cast of clowns you're auditioning as his replacement, things are only going to get worse... MUCH worse for you all!

Not to put too fine a point on this part of it, but now we should REALLY be able to credit the savings from Iraq to deficit reduction. Alternatively, that's money that can be repurposed elsewhere to save other things.

I give the President credit for keeping this promise, despite pressure from the Iraqi government, which wanted us to stay on, but I do wish he would now turn his full attention to getting us OUT of Afghanistan.

Even John McCain had a few nice words for President Obama last night.

Have no fear, though, the GOP Presidential nomination clown car will empty out today so the various floppy-shoe-shod characters can find something bad to say about the president's announcement.

Just how they can do so without also speaking ill of American military forces is beyond me. They'll weasel-word something, however.

I do have a suggestion for the White House, however. Can't they send some of those regiments to the Congress and have them ask, oh so politely, if they might have a jobs bill?

Thank you Mr President for finishing the war in Iraq ......a great promise kept. You are doing a great job.

Penn is private, right? Ivy League, in fact.

LoL The University probably figured out that his targeted crowd of young Pennsylvania Republicans wasn't really interested in hearing about "income inequality," and in order to get more than two people in the room, including Cantor's wife, they had to open it to the rabble.

A real "man of the people," our Eric Cantor.

Actually this is another example of a lie during the campaign. Although one might say better late than never but one might also say Americans have been put in harm's way because he saw a political advantage by delaying the withdrawal.

In the Obama/Biden Blueprint for Change, you will see this and other unfulfilled promises -- lies. The promise was to be out by Summer 2010, but don't no one call his hand ya' hear.

Course, the real reason we are leaving is that the Iranian backed president refused to grant immunity to our troops. If that was not the case we would remain. Now, we have done the dirty work the Iranians couldn't do, and have opened the door for the Iranians to walk in.

Not really. If you look at my post a few doors down, you'll find that as we leave, the contractors come in.

And we'll still be paying for it, no doubt.

By the way, who was it that opened the door for the Iranians to come into Iraq in the first place?

Look for the following announcement soon: Speaker of the House, John Boehner, today announced passage of the House Armed Services Appropriations Bill for 2011, following passage of three amendments, along party lines. The three amendments were as follows:

1.) The end the job killing stopping wars in Iraq and Afgahnistan Act, which prevents utilization of any funds appropriated to bring troops, equipment, supplies or support home from Iraq or Afghanistan.

2.) The end the job killing ObamaCare Act, which immediately overturns the Affordable Care Act.

3.) The end the job killing funding of abortion act, which makes it illegal for anyone to pay for an abortion in US dollars.

The appropriations bill is not expected to be approved in the Senate in its present form.

Is Eric Cantor a public official? He was not elected by the private sector was he, why should an elected representative of the US be so secretive with the general public, he swore to serve.

On one hand you have a president who tried and has fulfilled many of his promises, and on the other hand you have Republicans who made one promise and have unanimously voted to break it. Obama has earned himself a very good chance at re-election, in spite of republicans best efforts to derail him. Republicans will have earned themselves a kick in the ass. Welcome to Waterloo Eric.

The security agreement calls for U.S. combat forces to leave Iraqi cities by June 30. All American troops would be out by the end of 2011

This is a quote from USA Today talking about the agreement between Iraq and the United States in late 2008. The President at that time? George Bush.

Dont get me wrong, I am glad they are coming home...but lets not get too crazy. In fact, had Iraq softened their view on prosecution of U.S. Service Members, this announcement would not have been made because thousands would have stayed.

Those mobs as some like to call them are American citizens, you would think an elected official with as a position like Cantor's would want to address their concerns, instead of hide from them. You think all the young Republicans are proud of, and want to vote for a run for cover wussie like Cantor. Ha it's beautiful, it's only fair, there is a God, Cantor and his buddies wanted to muck up everything as much as possible, they said "we will break him", "we will make this his Waterloo", they were talking about the President of our United States, the United States of America they swore to serve, now they got what they wanted, but Obama is out talking about it everyday (as he should be), and Cantor is afraid to come outside and play. They deserve what they get, and we have a patriotic duty to give the whole bunch a kick in the ass next November for always, relentlessly, and unanimously playing politics instead of even attempting to fairly and honestly do their jobs and help reasonably govern a nation at war, and with an ever growing population in dire economic straights. Welcome to Waterloo Eric, is it as nice as you thought it would be. It's kind of scary to run your mouth until you actually get yourself into a fist fight isn't it, I'll give you some free advice, it's better to stand there and take your lumps if you have them coming, because if you run away you are just a big wussy, and nobody picks the biggest loud mouth turned wussy in the crew to be their leader. Good for the President. Remove the troops from Iraq since we are low on staffing for Africa. Is this the next phase in the plan?

Yes, the President has gotten rid of a dictator, but wasn't it a NATO operation?

I doubt the funding from this war will be removed due to the possible entry into the African campaign. This President isn't that far removed from Bush. Meanwhile, what happens in Iraq without US intervention? Probably another Vietnam after the pullout.

Did anyone bother to read that Obama was negotiating to have 5,000 troops stay there but was rejected?

@DBO -- I think underlying threats are not permitted on here.

The Virginia Republican’s speech was preempted by protests from liberal groups and unions, who were set to start demonstrating well before the scheduled 4:30 p.m. start time of Cantor’s address.

Cantor’s office was told that only the university community would be invited to attend the event, but Capitol Police informed the majority leader’s office Thursday night that the first 300 people in line would be allowed in. The Daily Pennsylvanian, the campus paper, reported that protestors were allowed to move from the street onto Penn’s campus hours before the speech was slated to begin. The college paper reported that protestors were planning to be there as early as 9 a.m.

“The Office of the Majority Leader was informed last night by Capitol Police that the University of Pennsylvania was unable to ensure that the attendance policy previously agreed to could be met,” Cantor spokesman Brad Dayspring said in a statement. “Wharton is an educational leader in innovation and entrepreneurship, and the Majority Leader appreciated the invitation to speak with the students, faculty, alumni, and other members of the UPENN community.”

I have to take issue with you on this one, David. It was pre-ordained, all right, but only because, during the campaign, then-candidate Obama proposed a troop withdrawal deadline of 16 months after taking office. Bomb, Bomb, Bomber McCain balked at the idea of a deadline for withdrawal, and so did Bush, but Iraqi president Maliki said, "sounds good to me," so Bush made the security agreement deal in order to pre-empt the issue and help out McCain, with whom he and Dick Cheney had earlier made a deal that ultimately sealed McCain's candidacy.

The first part is well-documented. For example:

    http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,566841,00.html

    http://www.cbn.com/CBNnews/432338.aspx

The second part, about the deal between Bush and McCain, I surmised from a lunch meeting they had at the White House, from which McCain came out looking dazed and confused, and after which McCain's road to the nomination was essentially -- and mysteriously -- unimpeded.

Congratulations President Bush for setting the exit strategy, and Congratulations President Obama for following the Bush timetable.

And most of all, congratulations to our troops, we look forward to welcoming you home.

Not a word from you blame everything on Bush lefties, as you know this was Bush's plan. Your stooge gets credit only for following the plan the grown ups put in place before the con-man Obama took office.

All you liberals need to stop puffing your chests and understand why he is really pulling the troops out. It is not because of a campaign promise. This is because the Iraq government would not allow the US military to adjudicate any wrongdoings by any of the 10 - 15,000 soldiers left behind after the end of the year. The Iraq government wanted the right to put on trial, any soldier accused of wrongdoing. The US and obama would not support this. I agree 100% with this decision. So please, quite puffing and bragging. However, also remeber what is happening in Egypt and will probably happen in Libya. The government in Egypt does not have enough power to put off Al qaeda and feel very threatened. That is why you are seeing 10% of the population of Coptic Christians being brutalized and raped by the majority of muslims. The government is almost helpless and they are also going after the Christians. You may not like Mubarak, but he kept this from happening. Do not be surprised that within a year of us leaving Iraq, that Iran tries to push their influence in to the country. Libya may end up the same way. As brutal as some the people are, the alternative may not be as good.

        This is TOO funny.

All Obama did was to adhere to the agreement that Bush made with Iraq to bring all troops home by the end of 2011.

The funny thing is that Obama actually tried to make an agreement with Iraq to change the agreement that Bush made, but the Iraqis refused.

Now msnbc is trying to 'praise' Obama for doing nothing, and failing in his attempt to do something that would have violated his campaign pledge.

        Too funny.

If you're talking about Obama - No, he did not vote for invading. He was not even in the Senate, so he could not have voted. I understand that he personally opposed the invasion, but that was likely because one of his friends and strongest supporters was Louis Farrakhan, the most prominent anti-Jewish Muslim leader in America.

On November 17 2008 this agreement was signed by the US Ambassador & Iraqi Foreign Minister. My memory is not as good as it once was but I believe President Obama was sworn in on January 20, 2009. Hence this agreement was negotiated and signed while Bush was President. How does Obama get any credit for this beyond agreeing to follow a treaty that was already in place?

Huh? So, this is unbiased reporting? Obama claims victory and the reporter reinforces it? No mention that this time-table was forged under Bush. No mention, that by all accounts - Obama's and Al Maliki's, that Obama was actively seeking to keep a significant number of troops in Iraq for training purposes long after this deadline; the only reason things changed was because Iraq refused to provide immunity to soldiers. Now, Obama does deserve some credit for adhering to the plan up until the talks on extending; making the deadline acheivable. However, if I inherited a product development plan, carried out the plan to the letter, tried to make changes to the plan at the last minute but was unable because some of the suppliers balked on my changes, no one in their right mind would give me all that much credit for any success. He practically stumbled into achieving his "promise". At least it isn't like the "affordable health care coverage for all" that turned into unaffordable health care for some. This is why our politicians do the things they do. They take a leak down our back, tell us it's raining, and we celebrate the end to draught conditions.

This is nothing more than a propaganda article that has few facts. Bush negotiated and signed the document setting the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq. Obama was in negotiations trying to get some to stay! Obama promised a full pull out in the first year of office, but now we are nearly 3 years in and they are still there. The savings from Iraq isn't going to go to deficit reduction, it simply won't suck up deficit funds from other social programs Obama is trying to push through.

In fact, at Solyndra, you can point to the G.W. Bush Administration, which finally changed the rules governing the grants so that the company, which previously had failed to qualify, could receive the money. It took another two months, by which time the Obama Administration was in place, for the personnel in the granting agency to complete delivery of the funding approval after being pushed extremely hard by Bush's crowd.

While Obama is killing Bin Laden, or rescuing the economy, or trying to get health care for all, or revamping our financial system, etc., Repugnants do nothing but scratch their heads, mumble something about "jobs" and then just blurt out "no". Obama runs circles around them. Once they think they have the upper hand with their obstructionism, Obama's already succeeded and moved onto something else. The deadline for this pull-out was set in 2008. The President was willing to consider requests from the Iraqi government for some small remaining training force, but proper terms and conditions were not reached. The U.S. has been steadily withdrawing forces from Iraq.

And oh, by the way, the President has been in office for less than three years.

I am glad you are speaking up James. I work to support legislation and funding(- if unfunded there will be no change) of military health, education, and other benefits. And, yes, legalize marijuana and tax it. I pay taxes on my other prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

I wish to pass on to you a tip about the arthritis pain that I have found works for me; and after discussing it with three different doctors they have agreed that many patients have told them the same. I am not a doctor; so of course, check with your doctor to see there are no medical conflicts.

Take 1/4 teaspoon of Tumeric(a spice) coupled with several shakes of black pepper (it helps the body assimulate the Tumeric). I take this in low-sodium v-8 juice or Trader Joe's low-sodium garden patch; but, you could take it in any juice you prefer.

I used to have to take 2- 650mg Tylenol for arthritis every day. I haven't had to take Tylenol for months now almost a year. After taking tumeric for a while one may increase the amount, if needed, to 1/2 teaspoon. How it works is by reducing inflamation.

Good luck to you and good health to all our returning vets. My husband was a Marine, my brother, Army, and many extended members of family have served. A cousin was on the Arizona.

I have been through the first Depression and all since. I support the Occupy Wall Street movement.

We need to publicly fund elections and get the money and influence out of it. One person, one vote. It would only cost about $6 per person a year!! Don't you think corporations and utilities, banks and financial institutions are stealing more than that out of our back pockets? It would return our legislators to representing us.

Its time to try something else, starting with legal pot.

I take five capsules a day of turmeric (two in the morning, three at night, always with food), and it helps my hip arthritis immensely - if I skip it for a week (forgot to go shopping) I hurt a _lot_. Then it takes about a week at the usual dose to get back mostly painfree. It's also good for the heart and circulation, too. It couldn't hurt to give it a try, and most bigger grocery stores carry it, and you can buy the capsules (a lot cheaper even with shipping) online.

It's nice to have a president who can not only put a sentence together, but also is a chess player with regard to foreign policy. He's always several steps ahead. Bush, the Garbler in Chief, couldn't even manage checkers. He played foreign policy tiddly winks.

Obama pulled out of the war and "honored" his campaign promise (as the grossly biased MSNBC headline states) at the tail-end of his first (and hopefully only) term, when he could have easily done the same months, if not years ago. But to do so now when public opinion is largely against his presidency and the economy is still struggling is an obvious attempt to curry favor rather than do what's best from a policy standpoint. It's a disgusting move from a reprehensible person.

As to your question, I don't expect anything. People can take me seriously or not...it doesn't really matter to me. If you don't take my posts seriously, then stop responding.

Speaking of spending, KOA, none other than Republican Senator Lindsey Graham was out this morning saying we should immediately begin spending billions and billions of dollars towards helping rebuild Libya's infrastructure. Why? Because there is oil there. Yet try to spend that money on teachers and firefighters and roads and bridges in the United States, and the Republicans provide a resounding NO.

Politically considered, the President should have waited to announce the full withdrawal of troops until the 'halo effect' of Ghaddafi's death passed. I'm suprised Plouffe and company did not suggest this. Obama often fails to wring maximum advantage from his accomplishments.

Considering that Bush set the original deadline and Obama was trying to extend it but failed, yes it is effectively Bush who bought the troops home.

Nothing stops con-man Obama from turning an utter failure into campaign rhetoric though.

I want the troops home just as badly as anyone else.  I have lost friends to the war, killed way too young.  My own son will be joining the Marines in the next 2 years.  However, I am VERY concerned about the power vaccum that will be left when we leave. I didn't vote for Obama, 2012 is still a year away, but I really think this is a poor decision on his part and not in the best interest of the country.  Do I want them home?  Absolutely! Do I think the timing is poor? Absolutely.

What exactly do you plan on doing in Iraq that would be different if we left 10 years from now? Let's decimate America to make sure Iraq is okay. The republicans think they can always kill social security and raise taxes on the poor to pay for the war to continue. Iraq is important, but America not so much is the only argument I hear for staying in Iraq.

The major point is that the Iraq people wanted us out. So we have been working towards leaving for at least a couple years now. All the while the people of Iraq could have changed their mind and ask us to stay and they didn't.

I realize that republicans don't believe in listening to the people. Maybe you wouldn't need so much voter suppression if you actually listened to the people?

I was never a "big fan" of GWB, but it is fair to mention "which U.S. President outlined and DIRECTED the pullout timetable for Iraq?

Just an FYI... for the record, it was BUSH who did that... uh, BEFORE Obama came in to office?

Iraq and U.S. agree that all U.S. forces will withdraw "no later than December 31, 2011."

On November 17, 2008, US and Iraqi officials signed a Security Agreement, often referred to as a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), stating that "All the United States Forces shall withdraw from all Iraqi territory no later than December 31, 2011." The agreement also called for all U.S. combat forces to withdraw from Iraqi cities "no later than June 30, 2009."

Let me see, I believe it was the Iraqi government that refused to go along with the Obama Administration's request to keep our forces in Iraq past the end of this year. Had the Iraqi government agreed with the Obama Administration then we would still be keeping several thousand troops in Iraq.

As pointed out many times, it was the Bush Administration that approved the Dec 31, 11 pull out of all American troops.

Now that Khaddafy is dead and all troops are coming home from Iraq, and all the sucess, can he do something about the NBA lock out. maybe slap around the union on there crazy demand to have a 57-43 split with the owner.

if he can do that, then he has my vote for 2012.

But Jeff, that would make you wanting the government to step in on private business. I thought you were all against that.???? What's up with that??

The economic down fall if the NBA does not play this season would be tragic, for the venders, employees that depend on the NBA to put food on the table(Not the players)

The first read thread is pretty funny. How is it that Fiesty Redhead is always first in line? Does she work for MSNBC. This is definately a left wing thread.

As an independent it is my vote the candidates are after. Both the people on this thread and the conservatives will vote for "their" party. The election is left to us undecided independents.

Here's how the majority of us voting independents see it. Obama takes credit for accomplishments he has no control over (the withdrawal from Iraq was decided under Bush), and blames others for those policies he has implemented.

It's quite simple, and the 2010 elections reflect it. Obama spent all his political capital on Health Care reform, and Wall Street reform. The indendent voters did not vote for Obama to get those bills enacted. They were divisive, and now no Republican is willing to assist Obama in any future so called "Jobs Plan". Obama angered the right, and now the rest of us are paying the price. What's worse is that most of the health care law is being rolled back or not implemented except for the high cost portions to the tax payers. The Wall Street reform has only added additional costs to American citizens. So neither bill has done anything to help the economy.

Get this through your head now. Obama was not elected to deal with foreign policy. Us independents could care less about who is dead, and what is going on in foreign countries. We elected Obama to fix the economy, but not by expanding government. We thought we were getting Bill Clinton 2.0. In our opinion Obama is a failure. He did not learn how to work with the Republicans, and instead alienated them. Nothing will be accomplished now. If he is relected we will enter a great depression as simple as that.

Bush was able to get the Democrats to do the right thing, but Obama will never get the Republicans to do the same. That is failed leadership. He couldn't even get the Democrats to go along with him.

Obama is a train reck. Better to recognize that now before the country goes over the cliff.

Dude, I am an independent, not registered with either party not even the tparty nutjobs. You do not speak for me in any form. You are speaking for yourself and no one else. So try this on for size.

Obama was elected to be the President of this country and to deal with all national issues not just one. Your claim that "Us independents could car less about who is dead and what is going on in foreign countries" is about as ignorant a statement as any rightwing cultist could make. Our President better have his eyes on world events as well as domestic events or he is not doing his job. As for learning how to work with the republicans, how do you work with someone that does not and will not work with you. They stated that as clearly as any group I have heard as soon as he was elected. As an independent the republican party is a disgrace to their oath of office and to the american people. They showed their true allegiance when they swore to a second oath that superceded the first at which point they became traitors to this country and their office. You sir are not an independent not in thought or action, you are just another mouth piece for the radical factions in this country.

Obama takes credit for accomplishments he has no control over

I think Bush's performance in office messed up some people's perception. It's like they think failure is success, and success is failure. Let me straighten you out:

Success is Osama bin Laden dead. Al-Awalaki dead. Qaddafy dead. Mubarak in jail. Arabs in the street saying "Thank You America!" Us, getting out of Iraq, success, confronting Pakistan - on our way to success. Got it?

Got what. I did not know Obama was in the military, or a member of seal team six? When did that happen. You mean Obama let the military industrial complex do it's "thing" just like all the administrations before his? It's what is called being in the right place at the right time. Are you saying Obama tracked down O.B.L., and killed him? Obama rised up against Egypt and overthrew Mubarak? Obama used a missile to stop Qaddafy's convoy from leaving the country, and then single handingly captured and then put a bullet in Qaddafy's head? You mean it was Obama, and not Bush who signed the treaty with Iraq to pull all the troops out of Iraq by December 2011. Wow you guys on here who blindly support the anointed one are rewriting history as it unfolds.

What you really meant to say was the military industrial complex is worth every penny we spend on it. What you are really saying is that their budget should never be slashed, and only increased. As a service disabled veteran I am happy for and proud of our military. I am smart enough to know the politicians are either in the right place at the right time, or not. That's what is called success.

Try giving a little more credit to who deserves it. Don't be such a fool.

Now if only your anointed one could do the same with the economy. He had two years of full Democrat control, and wasted it on Health and Wall Street reform. Angered too many people along the way. What happened to the first round of stimulous.

If only Obama would get out of the way of small businesses and the 99% like he did with the military industrial complex we will get this economy moving again. Put a surplus tax on the wealthy, get out of the way of the businesses by shrinking the size of government and allowing the businesses to spend money that is currently going to taxes, and give a break to the 99% then we will get this economy moving. Greece is a great example of how big government is bad for the economy. If it wasn't Greece would be booming right now.

I say this to Obama. Since you can't lead, then get out of our way. We have jobs to create, and want to put hard working Americans back to work. Yours jobs bill is a failure, just like the last one. You want to give a blank check to the states in hopes that they will spend it on teachers, firefighters, and policeman. There are no requirements that the states will do that. I promise you Obama that if you get out of our way, and let us small businesses lead we will get the economy moving again, and that will keep the teachers, firefighters, and policeman employed.

Obama if you do that I promise we will give you another opportunity to take credit for something you had no control over.

                  Dear Multiple Party System

As a fellow independent and after reading your post, I couldn’t resist responding. First, except for your opinion that independents will determine the outcome of the 2012 election; I have to say that I couldn’t disagree with you more and you don’t speak for this independent. In fact, I think it’s fair to say that you, like me, only speak for yourself.

On your point that President Obama takes credit for other people’s accomplishments; consider that no action, good or bad, takes place without the boss’ approval. Hence, an unbiased person understands that the boss gets the blame for any failures committed by anyone under his/her watch and conversely, the boss gets credit for any accomplishments which occur under his/her watch. It’s been that way long before President Obama was born.

Whether you agree with health care reform or not; the facts clearly indicate that President Obama tried to compromise and negotiate with Republicans to no avail. This is evidenced by how long it took to pass and the numerous changes and amendments. It wouldn’t have took so long or so much “political capital” to develop a reasonable health care reform bill if the Republicans made a good faith effort to compromise. To the contrary, the right made it clear very early in President Obama’s term that their main purpose was to make President Obama a one term President. They placed power over governing. Therefore, in my opinion, the rest of us are paying the price. I’ve never heard anyone say that they liked helping Wall Street after their reckless behavior but, in my opinion, the alternative would have been worse and therefore, has helped the economy.

The President of the United States of America has to wear many hats and resolve various foreign and domestic crises with equal vigor. As for the expansion of government, if you’re referring to initiatives intended to stimulate the economy; I say it has been at the very least harmless and is clearly better for us than downsizing or moving businesses overseas which is what the private sector has been doing for the past decade which no President can control. President Obama did try to work with Republicans and nothing short of complete capitulation would have satisfied them at his political peril. If President Obama is re-elected nothing will be accomplished if the Republicans don’t accept that there are people in this country that do not agree with their ideology and learn to compromise so that we all can have our voices heard. “My way or the highway” does not work in a democracy.

President Bush was able to get things done like Republican Presidents before him because Democrats were willing to compromise with him. President Obama has been able to get Democrats to go along with him which is evidenced by congressional votes to his initiatives. In fact, most of his stalled initiatives were defeated by uniform Republican opposition and filibusters.

I believe my opinions are supported by public records. But then again, that’s this independent’s opinion.

You know I have heard this cr** long enough. Most of the unemployed lazy people had jobs before the banks tanked our economy they had homes and families before the banks tanked our economy. So in my opinion you are the lazy pig here since you are unable to think for yourself and simply repeat what you heard a politican running for office say to get attention. No go back to your cave and complete your finger painting.

Iraq was the failure of BOTH political parties. The democrats approved the war, but of course just like the cowards that they are, tried later to absolve themselves of any responsibility. I was adamantly opposed to any conflict with Iraq, even when it seemed that the entire country was beating the war drums and rattling the spears. This wasn't a Republican mess, it was a complete failure of our political system which the public was very happy to go along with. People need to accept culpability in this instead of having selective amnesia. AND if that isn't enough, OBAMA WANTED TO KEEP US IN IRAQ EVEN LONGER!!! Only failed negotiations are bringing our soldiers home. OBAMA NEEDS TO GO!!!

Now onto the economy; the worst since the 1930s. Gonna take years to clean up that crap.

You came in with 750,000 jobs lost/month. now you're at 100k jobs created/month. it's going to take a long time, but a mess so big, what do you expect.

                    BHO 2012!
