Focus on foreign policy in Sat. GOP debate

By NBC News' Ali Weinberg

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Tonight’s debate here will be the first forum in which candidates talk about foreign policy for more than a few minutes.  And since none of them have run away with the vote in this crucial primary state yet, they will probably all want to address the foreign policy issues most pertinent to South Carolina voters and lawmakers.

Here’s a list of some of the policy issues that might perk up South Carolinian ears listening to tonight’s debate.

Nuclear waste

Between its seven commercial nuclear reactors and the giant Savannah River Site, a former nuclear weapons plant, South Carolina is home to millions of pounds of radioactive waste that was destined for the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear repository, before the Obama administration’s decision to halt work on the Nevada site.

While most candidates at the debate in Las Vegas last month said they opposed the repository, that position doesn’t sit well with South Carolina voters.

South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson penned an op-ed last week saying he was “startled to hear candidates jump at the opportunity to agree with President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on shutting down the nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain” in the Oct. 18th debate.

Trans-Canada pipeline

Wilson and his colleague, Rep. Jeff Duncan, have also been vocal in opposing the Obama administration’s delay of a decision on the Keystone XL project, a 1,700-mile oil pipeline that would carry Canadian crude from Alberta to the U.S.

The two congressmen are circulating an open letter to the candidates today urging them to support the Keystone project: “South Carolina voters want a President armed with a real energy plan that will grow our economy and make us energy independent by expanding our access to all forms of energy.”

This issue is also of particular importance to one influential member of South Carolina’s political class: David Wilkins, the former ambassador to Canada under president George W. Bush, who is a Perry supporter.

Wilkins called the U.S. decision to delay approval of the project “catastrophic,” yesterday according to CBC News in Canada. "It’s the longest permitting process in the history of the world, I think. It sends a bad message that we’re not open for business,” Wilkins said.

Immigration

Illegal immigration is particularly resonant with voters in the Palmetto State, which recently passed a stringent law similar to that passed in Arizona last year. Texas Gov. Rick Perry may have an especially big challenge tonight, given his support of the DREAM Act in Texas and his statement in September (which he subsequently recanted) that those who don’t support it “don’t have a heart.”

A federal court is challenging parts of South Carolina’s law, including its requirement for police to check immigration status whenever there is “reasonable suspicion” that someone is in the country illegally.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley defended the law last month, saying through a spokesman, “If the feds were doing their job, we wouldn't have had to address illegal immigration reform at the state level. But, until they do, we're going to keep fighting in South Carolina to be able to enforce our laws."

Foreign investment in America

Several large international corporations are headquartered in South Carolina, including BMW and Michelin. Haley has made courting other foreign companies a centerpiece of her administration, heralding each new business deal with a jubilant press release or other pageantry.

In fact, she held a press conference on Oct. 6th to announce the decision of German-based tire company Continental to build a new plant in South Carolina. She did catch flack though earlier this year for an economic development trip to France and Germany that featured five-star accommodations and a lavish “chalet” at the International Paris Air Show.

Because of South Carolina’s focus on bringing foreign companies here, look for Republican candidates to be asked how they would encourage investment here, both from foreign business and from American companies based abroad.

Defense funding

South Carolina is also a military hub, so look for candidates to emphasize their opposition to defense cuts as well as the “triggers” built into the deficit super committee’s negotiations that would cut between $500 and $600 billion in the defense budget.

Maybe they'll put a real good question in the debate to see just how much knowledge these presidential candidates have. Something like, Do you think the Berlin Wall should come down? Do you think Ireland should become an Independent country? or should Norway financially assist Italy since they use the same Euro currency and share a border?

Wonder how many tea partiers reading this don't get it?

the only one that knows anything about foreign policy is Huntsman .. will he get asked anything ...probably not .. all the tea party wants to hear is how critical the candidates are of Obamas foreign policy and how they would have done things from killing bin laden to takeing down Gadaffy much better than Obama ... of course Newt wants us to break all ties with the rest of the world

    Courtesy of The Obama Diary/Politico:

President Obama’s statement on Syria’s suspension from the Arab League: “I applaud the important decisions taken by the Arab League today, including the suspension of Syria’s membership, consideration of economic sanctions, and downgrading of diplomatic relations. After the Assad regime flagrantly failed to keep its commitments, the Arab League has demonstrated leadership in its effort to end the crisis and hold the Syrian government accountable. These significant steps expose the increasing diplomatic isolation of a regime that has systematically violated human rights and repressed peaceful protests. The United States joins with the Arab League in its support for the Syrian people, who continue to demand their universal rights in the face of the regime’s callous violence. We will continue to work with our friends and allies to pressure the Assad regime and support the Syrian people as they pursue the dignity and transition to democracy that they deserve.”

    Hi Pat,

Does The Obama Diary/Politico have anything to say about Obama's vow that Iran would not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons?

Anything about IAEA saying they were on brink on putting them together?

What about reports on big explosions on a IRGG military base in Malard, Iran? Were they trying to fit a nuclear warhead on a Shahab-3? Big boo-boo or something else that left 32 dead and fires burning for 14 hours?

What does The Obama Diary think about Iran saying they can kill a million Israelis with only 4 missiles and follows it a few days late with a threat that even names Israel's Dimona reactor?

It have thoughts on Iran's threat that if any action is taken, the war/reprisal will entail more than the Mid East - threatening US bases throughout Europe and the Mid East?

Did I see where the German Air Force is even training for a strike on Iran? Guess they figure sombody has to something since there is no world leader the last 3 years, huh?

It mentioned the Arab League, did it name any friends we have left in the Arab League due to Obama having no policy other than red sugar water speeches like the above?

You realize that Iran isn't part of the Arab League and the Saudis, in particular, have no confidence - consider Obama worthless, in preventing the biggest state sponsor terror from getting the bomb?

And then there's the Libyan mercenaries in Gaza with their Grad rocket launchers. Btw - any word on what happened to all the SA-14, SA-7, SA-24 anti-aircraft missles looted from Qaddafi's depots ... update on the MDM-3 sea mines? Does this (and the fact that the new Egypt is run by the Muslim Brotherhood and is no buffer/help due to that "Arab Spring") have anything to do with the Hamas and Hizbollah guys thinking they can take out Israel on their own?

Seems like a lot of stuff has been happening the last few weeks ....

Anyway Pat, thanks for the view from the pretty red "libbybird feeder."

I saw where the German Air Force is even training for Iran Strike.

Patriotic American U.S.A. Was you asleep in the 90's like the rest of the libs?

"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity
to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is
    our bottom line."
    President Clinton, Feb. 4,
    1998

"If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We
want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass
    destruction program."
    President
    Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998.

"Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great deal
here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical
or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat
    we face."
    Madeline
    Albright, Feb 18, 1998.

"He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times
    since 1983."
    Sandy Berger, Clinton
    National Security Adviser, Feb, 18,1998.

"[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S.
Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air
and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat
posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs."

    Letter
    to President Clinton
, signed by Sens. Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry,
    and others Oct. 9, 1998

"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass
destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has
made a mockery of the weapons inspection process."
Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec.
    16, 1998.

"Hussein has ... chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass
destruction and palaces for his cronies."
    Madeline Albright,
Clinton Secretary of State, Nov. 10, 1999.

"There is no doubt that ... Saddam Hussein has reinvigorated his weapons
programs. Reports indicate that biological, chemical and nuclear programs
continue apace and may be back to pre-Gulf War status. In addition, Saddam
continues to redefine delivery systems and is doubtless using the cover of a
licit missile program to develop longer-range missiles that will threaten the
    United States and our allies."
    Letter to
    President Bush
, Signed by Joe Lieberman (D-CT), John McCain (Rino-AZ) and others, Dec. 5, 2001

"We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a threat
to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandated of the
United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and the means of
    delivering them."
    Sen. Carl Levin (D, MI),
    Sept. 19, 2002.

"We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical
    weapons throughout his country."
    Al Gore,
    Sept. 23, 2002.

"Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to deter
and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power."

    Al Gore, Sept.
    23, 2002.

"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing
    weapons of mass destruction."
    Sen.
    Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002.

"The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are
confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological
weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his
chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that
    he is seeking nuclear weapons..."
    Sen.
    Robert Byrd (D, WV), Oct. 3, 2002.

"I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to
use force-- if necessary-- to disarm Saddam Hussein because I b elieve that a
deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave
    threat to our security."
    Sen. John F.
    Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9, 2002.

"There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively
to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next
five years ... We also should remember we have always underestimated the
progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction."

    Sen.
    Jay Rockerfeller (D, WV), Oct 10, 2002.

"He has systematically violated, over the course of the past 11 years, every
significant UN resolution that has demanded that he disarm and destroy his
chemical and biological weapons, and any nuclear capacity. This he has refused
    to do"
    Rep.
    Henry Waxman (D, CA), Oct. 10, 2002.

"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that
Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weap ons stock,
his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid,
comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members ... It is
clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase
his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to
    develop nuclear weapons."
    Sen. Hillary Clinton
    (D, NY), Oct 10, 2002.

"We are in possession of what I think to be compelling evidence that Saddam
Hussein has, and has had for a number of years, a developing capacity for the
production and storage of weapons of mass destruction."
    Sen.
    Bob Graham (D, FL), Dec. 8, 2002.

"[W]ithout question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal,
murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly
grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... And
now he is miscalculating America's response to his contin ued deceit and his
consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction ... So the threat of Saddam
Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real ..."
    Sen. John F.
    Kerry (D, MA), Jan. 23. 2003.

Yes the concern was identified by the Clinton Administration and Iraq needed a close watch. That's why we had the no-fly zone. But the blooming of bipartisan support for military action was provoked by the confidential briefings and public announcements that followed BOGUS reports by curveball that Iraq had WMD's. He subsequently admitted he fabricated the threats to provoke the US to liberate his homeland.

The Brits and Germans did not buy his story but he found a hungry audience in the Bush White House.

Iran is another backwards country whose people do not support their leaders especially after they killed most the of young men off fighting the Iraqis for 10 years....to a standstill.

And to that dill who made the claim that the recent explosion in Iran was a result of loading a necular warhead....if you have proof of that put it up.... otherwise you should be jailed for spreading terrorist rumors....you are the problem not the cure.

As the Egyptians managed to hide their Pharoh's tombs in the desert for centuries and in some cases more than 1000 years....I would tend to think that satisfactorily hiding the WOMD would not be a difficult enterprise.....I am still betting that hidden in the ever shifting landscapes of the desert are at least the required parts-perhaps as yet unassembled-to create what we as a modern society fear-nuclear armaments. If we are fortunate, they won't be discovered until some archeologist 500 years from now or greater, stumbles upon them and tries to make sense of what it actually is. Unfortunately, there are enough terror cells out there, fairly well organized and fairly well funded, that I imagine it will be like searching for El Dorado for these groups. I do not discount nuclear threat as bogus information. The only people that seemingly enjoy joking about nuclear holocaust are many who post in these discussions.

Grump, I wish it would be an opportunity for Mr. Huntsman to shine. The problem is the audiences at these increasingly painful affairs seem to represent the sector of my party I abhor. A group of people who applaud executions and boo a soldier can not be expected to be won over by intelligence and reason. As a Republican I am embarrassed by the far right, they do NOT represent true conservative values.

Welcome Tea Party Republican extremism. The ruling money class against the rest of the people. Class warfare probably and the money is way out in front.

Not my Grandfathers party sad. If you draw a pay check none of the republican candidates are going to do what is right for you.

I understand how you feel Mark. The Republican Party used to have true statesmen who loved America and Americans. They worked for the betterment of Americans and America and not their party. That ended with old Newt. He brought a special poison to the Republican Party and it hasn't been the same since.

The Republicans need to rid themselves of the likes of Newt and the tea party if they ever want to have a seat at the table that means anything. The tea party has poisoned the water and it's no longer safe to drink. I have no idea why the Republicans seem so afraid of the tea party. They make up a slim minority of the voters and are losing credibility every day. Nothing more then noisy annoyances nothing more. They'll soon be nothing more then a foul smelling and tasting footnote in history.

My God -- The libs on here commenting on the GOP of old is like the pot calling the kettle black. If you don't believe the democrat party hasn't been hijacked by the far left scum sucking, anti-American progressives, then you have stayed too long on the crack pipe -- like the current POTUS. The great Democrat party of JFK is long gone but this country longs for it to return.

I would imagine that the right wing bashing is the traditional way to get us to look away from what a debacle the Democratic party has become...if all we can talk about is how poorly Perry speaks, or Cain's alleged indiscretions, or Bachman's empty assertions....well, then we aren't looking at the broken promises of the present administration. I for one do not want to see the present administration back in office to bumble around another four years and 'maybe' (and that is a huge probability of no) stumble onto something that is actually good for this country as a whole. As for re-writing history, that is completely a product of a politically correct society....can't have winners and losers, even in history. Seeing as we don't choose to learn anything from past history, why do we insist on coloring it until it is morally comfortable for us?

I'm reading articles about Romney wanting to go to war with Iran if he's elected. Is this true?

If so, then Romney should pay for it. Himself. Take money out of his check weekly until his bloody war is paid in full. And then after he has destroyed the country, he should personally take care of all the refugees. He's got the homes. He's building bigger. Use them.

OWS has now come to Berlin, Germany.

If the German police starting asking what the right wing here in our country love to ask - your papers, please, then we will know that the TP have succeeded worldwide. They'll be in heaven. Good luck Berliners. We are with you. As you are with us.

Think about it. Romneys supports yet another war. He wanted to see the auto industry go bankrupt. He wanted to see more foreclosures, for the investors, of course. His latest is wanting to privatize veteran's health care.

When is he going to start attacking Congress's perks? They should get the axe before we should. We're just trying to live our lives in as affordable a manner as we can, considering how the politicians and corporate America are stacked against us.

President Obama. We in America got it right when we elected him. He is a good decent intelligent man. He has brought our Nation back from almost total collaspe. Quietly. And with dignity and grace.

It's the time of year where Time Magazine is looking for their person of the year. I initially thought it should have been the Democrats in Wisconsin who walked out all those months ago and woke up Democrats everywhere.

But now I believe the Person of the Year should be the Arab Spring.

As the Bee Gees sang so beautifully:

Don't shed a tear for me

                  No, it's not your style

If you're not here by me

                  Then it's not worthwhile

                  My world is our world

And this world is your world

And your world is my world

And my world is your world is mine.

                  _______________

Enough with the wars Romney. Be creative. Wars are easy. Peace isn't. Try it. Everybody else in the world is trying.

Beg pardon, but police states in Korea, China are working on nuclear capability whether we like it or not, and whether we think that we know about it or not. This is not striving for peace, but looking for a way to dominate and intimidate other cultures for their resources, whatever those resources might be.

Beg pardon, Sue... but China tested it's first nuclear weapons in 1964. I can understand that YOU may not have realized this... and therefore, may not have gotten the joke. But a person who fancies themselves presidential material should have at least known this. What should you know? Well, if your plan is to vote for the leader of the free world, perhaps it would behoove you to at least know which of the potentials are too stupid to be a safe bet.

                    Forrest and Feisty,

A globe would be good. Also a list of foreign leaders and how to pronounce their name correctly would be a start.

Huntsman: a foreign ambassador to China.

                    Romney: winter olympics organizer

Gringrich :experience of a European cruise

Bachmann: maybe she has visited Canada?

Cain: " his common sense" trumps any knowledge of the world

Perry: has he ever spent time even in Mexico?

They can't talk about this one! Gingrinch will lecture everyone and look very stern, and not say anything of value. Mitty will be trying to remember who the "teabaggers" want to bomb, so he can suggest nuking them. The only one with any credential and smarts at all will be Huntsmen. But they don't seem particularly driven to ask him anything.

Considering all Obama's foreign policies debacles, just about anybody would be better.

He starts an illegal war with Libya- and it winds up in al Qaeda hands.

He does not ship grain to the Middle East- although warned that food shortages would ignite violence- and Tunisia is in radical Islamic hands, and Egypt is in the hands of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Iran probably already has a nuclear weapon- so I guess they were not bowled over by his "charm".

                    Ditto North Korea.

Oh- and on the Iranian front? Obama allowed the Russians to dictate we take missile defense systems out of the Czech Republic and Poland- both of which countries were pretty angry at that turn of events.

Obama's foreign policy successes are second only to his economic successes- as in, he fails on all fronts.

Fortunately, he won't be president for much longer.

                    Unsubstantiated, therefore a lie.

"He does not ship grain to the Middle East- although warned that food shortages would ignite violence"

The popular revolts in the Middle East had nothing to do with grain shipments. Your comments are unsubstantiated and are, therefore, lies.

North Korea developed and tested nukes during the Bush administration. Your implication is, therefore, a lie.

"Obama allowed the Russians to dictate we take missile defense systems out of the Czech Republic and Poland"

Ignorance is bliss, which is why liberals still support Obama.

If you read anything other than this site, think progress, or other liberal sites, you'd know all bout what I posted.

Go ahead- do a little Google search. You'll find citations for the warnings Obama got on drought and war causing food shortages that would ignite violence in the Middle East and North Africa in January, 2010.

You'll find citations about Islamic extremists taking over Tunisia.

The Muslim Brotherhood taking over Egypt.

You must have been in a cave for the last week not to know that the U.N? Found that Iran has, or is on the brink of having, nuclear weapons.

                    Ditto North Korea.

As to his reelection- look at the polls. We'll see which of us is right next year this time.

My goodness, no jo: you have certainly had a rough day on FR. I know that it is difficult to accept the feedback that you are wrong, and it can lead to some hurt feelings, so in the spirit of bipartisanship, I offer the following:

When someone like Sailcat asks you to support what you write, you have an obligation to provide the appropriate citations. Telling people to find them for themselves supports the idea that the citations do not exist. It is up to YOU to defend your point, not the rest of us.

When you ARE caught out and clearly wrong about a point you have made, for example, that remarkable diatribe against one of our hosts, own up to it! No one can be right all the time. It happens. Better to be honest about it. And I know you will do that and apologize to our host.

Lastly, this unrelenting hatred of our President, whatever it is based on, is unbecoming to YOU. It says more about you than it does about anything our President has done. Just like no one can be 100% right all the time, no one can be 100% wrong either.

I am sure that you will accept my feedback in the spirit that it is given, with the wish to improve your standing amongst the posters on FR.

Have a good weekend ! Best regards, newdayDAWNING...RETURNED!

You are a liar, no joe.

The latest estimates of Iran's latent nuclear capability show it has not acquired the means to produce a weapon at this time. Therefore, you are a liar.

Your dittos on North Korea ignore your previous implication that they acquired nukes under Obama's watch, which is demonstrably untrue. Therefore, you are lying and trying to hide it. A double lie.

No reputable news source has pointed to Obama as being in any way, shape, or form responsible for the popular uprisings in the Middle East. Therefore, you are a liar.

While the Muslim Brotherhood is active in Egypt, no reputable news source has made the claim they are taking over the country at this time, nor have they suggested it would be Obama's fault if they do. Therefore, you are a liar.

Your claims on Tunisia is unsupportable, therefore they are lies.

Your posts are shameful, no joe. If you had the intellectual capacity to grasp the simple concept of shame you would be humiliated for posting these fabrications. Please be assured, however, that many other people are reading your blithering ravings and they are turning away, disgusted and ashamed of and for you.

North Korea has had Nuclear weapons since early in the President Bush 43 Administration and they have proven to have a fully capable short range delivery system.

Why didn’t President Bush do anything about this? Could it be that he did not attack because he could not get the backing of the UN – which he couldn’t – vetoed by the Security Council??

Yes the IAEA branch of the UN released a report that said in their opinion Iran was close to having all necessary formulas and technologies to create a nuclear war head. They also estimated it would take another 2 years or more to complete the process if that is their intention.

So is it your opinion that we should attack Iran without the backing of the UN??? At least we had their backing for invading Iraq.

Oh, to heck with it- you have no inclination to do any research-or to read anything less than worshipful of your idol.  You need to be spoon fed- and, although you won't take the medicine, I'll post it for anyone else who might be swayed by your post.

Let's start with the missile defense shield in Poland and the Czech republic

                    http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=awZyw2fptKCQ

This decision strained relations with those two countries.

                    http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/sep/17/barack-obama-missile-defence

Let's move on to the food shortages in the Middle East- about which Obama was warned, but did nothing

                    http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2011/feb/07/crop-shortages-political-instability

That is just one article- there are plenty of others.  The fact remains that the entire "Arab Spring" uprising was triggered by a Tunisian fruit seller who set himself aflame in a protest over rising food prices- a situation the United States, with it's multi- year stockpiles of wheat, corn, soy, and rice, could have- and should have- ameliorated.  I prefer to believe Obama is just too dumb to know better- but there are, in fact, liberals who believe he withheld these combustibles in order to bring about these very events.

                    In any case

                    http://blogs.reuters.com/faithworld/2011/11/02/radical-islamists-control-many-tunisian-mosques-since-january-revolution/

This is the tip of the iceberg- as most radical Islamists did not vote in the recent elections.  However, they are working behind the scenes, taking over mosques, and will be ready to pounce when the time is right.

On to Egypt.  The Muslim Brotherhood is not Egypt's answer to the Big Brothers/Big sisters organizations.  They are a radical Islamist organization dedicated to sharia law and the obliteration of Israel.

                    http://m.upi.com/m/story/UPI-86451301057128/

They are poised to overwhelm their opposition in the upcoming elections.  There have already been troubling incidents- attacks on Israel coming from a border with Egypt that had been closed since the Carter Camp David accords, for one.  Attacks that killed hundreds of Coptic Christians in the last few weeks for another.

                    As to Libya.

                    http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/al-qaeda-terror-group-benefit-libya-weapons/t/story?id=14923795

If you are one of the few who have not seen the reports that the al Qaeda flag is flying over the courthouse that was the birthplace of the Libyan revolution, look it up.

As to reelection- well, all I can say is, if you still think Mr, WTF is going to win, I feel sorry for you, because your plaid sky world is about to come into collision with reality.

The article on food shortages in the Middle East in no way indicates Obama was responsible for the popular uprisings that have occurred there. You are being dishonest.

Your article on the Muslim Brotherhood does not say it is taking over Egypt nor does it blame Obama for its activities. Your implications to suggest Obama is responsible are lies.

Your article on Tunisia just says extremists are occupying a number of mosques. A far cry from extremists taking control of the country and, yet again, Obama is not being blamed for the events occurring there. Therefore, your comments are just lies...again.

As for Libya, your original claim was that al Queda had seized power and your article clearly does not support that lie. Busted again, no joe.

Finally, your article on the missile defense shield does not support your original lie that the Russian dictated the terms and, in fact, it states the US dropped the program in a quid pro quo over Iran. Nor does the article support your lies that Poland or any one else in the region are furious over the decision. Therefore, you are a liar yet again.

Your friends, if you have any, must think you're hilarious, no joe. We, on the other hand, simply think you're a buffoon. Fail.

Oh, and one more thing, the polls clearly show two strong trends are developing for the upcoming elections next year: First, the GOP's sorry collection of wannabe candidates don't have a snowball's chance in your trailer park of winning the presidential elections next year; and second, you are going to be deeply disappointed when Obama wins the election by default. Better start stocking up on your favorite brand of malt liquor because it's going to be a tough year for the GOP!

Read 'em and weep, no joe!

Think Progress: President Obama's Foreign Policy Successes -

So what are the candidates likely to say? When they do talk national security, it’s usually trite and unfounded attacks on President Obama like he has made America weak, thrown Israel “under the bus” or goes around the world apologizing for America. Mitt Romney will probably tell voters that Obama thinks “there is nothing unique about the United States.” Rick Perry will most likely sound off about how “the world has never been as dangerous” because of Obama. Look for Newt Gingrich to oppose whatever the president supports, even if that means the former speaker betrays a position he held as little as 13 seconds prior. And as for Herman Cain, he’s still trying to figure out whether China has nuclear weapons, let alone tackle the president’s foreign policy positions.

Seeing that these GOP candidates aren’t likely to accurately represent the president’s foreign policy during these debates, ThinkProgress has released a new report — “Obama’s Foreign Policy Successes” — detailing key foreign policy victories during the Obama administration, from killing Osama bin Laden and ushering Middle East democracy to ending the war in Iraq and reducing nuclear weapons stockpiles. Read the full report here.

                      ________________________

President Obama. We are lucky, we are fortunate that he is our President in these times. The Republicans just want to bomb the **** out of anybody and anything. That to them signifies strength.

They have no idea how wrong they are. How wrong they have been all these years. They are incompetent, don't do their homework and show zero interest in making friends with our enemies, over time.

I guess we have the weapons. Use 'em. That's about as deep as their thinking takes them.

Think Progress has put together a terrific report on President Obama's foreign policy successes. As always, they did a great job.

Pat Boston Ma---Do you have amnesia, or are you just ignorant? Obama thru the UN got a resolution(unconsititutional) to go to Libya with a "Humanitarian Action"(no threat to US security) and the result, conservatively is 40,000 civilian deaths by NATO bombing. And now we have US, Israel, and UK ratchting up tension against Syria and Iran. Obama is a war criminal and Hillary Clinton's recent remarks "We came, we saw, he died, (followed by a big belly laugh), is despicable!! And I bet you can't even tell me what we achieved there, since the so-called freedom fighters(rebels) were Saudi and Qatari Alqaeda trained mecenaries. Obama has expanded the war in Afghanistan and now stands ready to inflame the the entire middle east. Obama is a weak-willed, spineless puppet to the Military Industrial Complex, just like his predecessor Bush!!

At this point, I would wholeheartedly support the ousting of the UN and our discontinuation of participation in that body. Remembering my history, before it was sanitized and made politically correct, most of the wars, which everyone seems to like to blame on the President of the day, were actually situations we found ourselves embroiled in due to pleas by the UN to help stop the inhumanity and protect human rights...etc, etc, etc. And usually once we commit to those causes, we are villified because the messy reality of war is that there is destruction, there is death and injury, there is suffering. We are asked to champion the underdog, and when we do, we become the rabid pit bull in the world scene. Tired of the schizophrenia. Wonder how many "police actions" and wars would be undertaken, if the UN couldn't count on the US for humanitarian support.

                          #9.4 - Mon Nov 14, 2011 8:44 AM EST

Well, I am assuming you mean the wars AFTER the UN was formed as we were a war like people long prior to that. Incidentally, the US initiated the creation of the UN and have been the de facto "leaders" of it since it's inception. We are not asked to do anything... we choose to do so. I am assuming you are under the assumption that practice will stop once we are not involved with the UN? lol A little history might serve you well:

                          http://www.un.org/aboutun/history.htm

Since the forming of this coalition of nations, the US has been involved in countless military actions, a large majority of those actions were for our own self interest.

                          http://americanhistory.about.com/library/timelines/bltimelineuswars.htm

As so much of US history after the advent of the UN was took place during the "cold war," much of our military intervention had to do with ousting any hint of "communism." This was a US fear, not a world fear. As we struggled to be #1, we had to weaken USSR to assure that title. The US is actually not known for "humanitarian" support... Japan is. We are known for military might. We are the pit bull because we choose to be.. at times AGAINST UN support.

The "Gross Odd People" (GOP), and the "Really Not Competent" (RNC) have no idea what Foreign Policy means. The way "Crazy Cain" tries to explain any type of Foreign Policy issue just reinforces the fact that he is unqualified to be President. All of the GOP Clowns have been completely wrong, and President Obama has been completely correct. Thees GOP Clowns gave no credit to the President for killing Bin Laden, and these functional illiterates were even stating that it was unwise to do so. "Nutty Newt" has been constantly saying no to the President on Foreign Policy, and it has backfired on him. Again!! Then there is "Bitchy Bachmann" who has never read anything meaningful on American Foreign Policy Issues. She still thinks that the President is a terrorist, not an American Citizen, and is weak on Foreign Policy. Again! "Bitchy Bachmann" is completely wrong on all of the Foreign Policy Issues that confront our nation today. The GOP "Carnival Of Clowns." Think that they can competently debate a topic they know nothing about?? Really?? None of these GOP Clowns could ever debate the President on Foreign Policy Issues, and the President would make these clowns look dumber that they already are. Then there is "Romulian Romney" who is just a Foreign Policy "Two-Face." This individual is just dangerous for the United States, it's allies, and the rest of the world. Just imagine America for a minute. These GOP political "Flip-floppers" acting "Two-Faced" towards nations like Iran, North Korea, and Pakistan. Do you see any mushroom clouds yet America?? Now imagine America. "Crazy Cain" trying to deal with Russia or China on just very simple Foreign Policy Issues. Are people seeing the danger of "Crazy Cain." Nutty Newt," "Bitchy Bachmann," and especially "Scary Perry" dealing with Foreign Policy Issues competently?? Progressive Power knows that this would cause complete panic around the world. That is fact1

I wonder how long it took to come up with all the nasty titles for the candidates? There are catchy, I must admit, but I wonder if the same types of effort could be put toward a substantive analysis of what you would hope that our government would do on the world scene as opposed to creating this fictionalized accounting of popular media and twisted poetry.

Aside from Huntsman and possibly Gingrich this crowd is clueless on Foreign Policy. Come to think of it they are clueless on just about everything. During the debate on the economy I did not hear one idea for creating jobs. If you want to beat President Obama you had better have proposals to sell to the American people. Thus far they have failed on that issue. In short, I expect to hear very little real content but quite a bit about bombing Iran. Same old Republican Party.

that is what he said nuclear capability doesn't mean don't have nukes he was saying they were trying to improve the nuclear capability but he should of been more careful with his word choice since people love taking things the wrong way. Yes, I seriously believe "this" rocket scientist has no clue about China, UBecke becke becke stan..or foreign policy what so ever.. I don't even think he knows anything about business....

When Cain was asked out the states he answered 13...

BTW how many times has China attaced anyone? Both China and the US depend on each other for our very survial (economic). There's no military threat, unless we make one....

This guy is an idiot, I hope you guys pick him....I really do...please...

Spin it any way you need to this guy hasn't got it . This is the issue with the republican party even when some said something that shows how much they don't understand the party still defend them. The Democrats need to lean to do this . Oh ya if some one doesn't agree with you you need to do better than call them a lib really not and insult to liberals or anyone but the extreme right wing.

With cain we get new material every day. Is that all you can come up with, the states comment. Talk of desperate look how you try to save his ass with your points. You say he should have been careful with his word choice. Your making excuses for him. In Hermmi's case he has proven that a rocket scientist doesn't know china has nukes.

Mr. Cain has admitted that he doesn’t know much about foreign affairs. Said he will hire good advisors.

But if you don’t understand foreign affairs how do you know if you are getting good advice?

Congress makes all the laws related to domestic affairs so the key functions for any President is handling Foreign Affairs and being the CIC.

One was a slip that can happen to anyone. The other was lack of knowledge about Communist China. You know if you spin long enough the car will get completely stuck.

Rich I agree with you,do they really think this guy is in the same league with our president....I did not vote for Obama because I wasn't sure of his foriegn policy ability, but not because he didn't seem to know anything at all like Cain admits...And I will definetly vote for Obama this time..Hell I will voluteer for his campaign since I am un-employed, and that isn't his fault but its not mine either like Cain said..And its not just Cain its the whole Gop they don't offer a choice anymore for sane thinkers...They all tow a strict party line and its a crazy line...They in my view will lose in a landslide this time unless racism rears its ugly head, which I think is unlikely since voting is private.. I bet there will be a lot of voters like last time who won't admit they voted for him for fear of retribution in their lily white segregated social circles..Which really do exist since I am Irish-american and hear what they say when there are no people of color around period.. now don't miscontrue that to mean that there is a majority of racists in this country because it is actualy a small minority of people that really feel that way inside...But others project that vibe because they think it is socialy acceptable and it is for a small part of our populus.....Shamefully so.........

The truth is people do believe, and that is their right. Funny thing about believers no matter where the fact may take them they continue to believe . To do otherwise means you must think for ones self and this really is not enjoyable at times. Sometimes facts interfere with what you want to believe.

The President was talking about the 57 US states and territories. TERRITORIES like Guam, Virgin Islands, etc.

All of these want-a-bes talk about all the things they're going to do on the first day of office, they'll repeal the Health Reform, close entire agencies and cabinet posts, lower taxes, increase foreign commerce, "deal" with China, dictate terms to our enemies, blah, blah, blah. Anyone would believe we're electing an Emperor to the American Empire. What nonsense! Everyone knows that what the President can and cannot do is tempered by the 535 members of Congress. Congress has to repeal laws, enact new ones, approve budgets, approve new tax tables, treaties, import and export tariffs, etc, etc. If the President can't get Congress to approve his plans, they just don't happen. If the President could accomplish everything he wants by executive order, this President would have already executed so many of them that it would make Congress irrelevant to the process. The fact is, he can't either. That's why the Constitution built such powers to govern the nation so there would be check and balances. We should all remember that, especially when these candidates are assuring the American People of all the things they "will do" if elected. Most of it is pure nonsense.

You are so correct.. And it's exactly why Obama's polices haven't been very successful since the GOP took over the house and got the ability to block legislation in the Senate.

People voted in these clowns (GOP) to create jobs. What they have shown is that have no idea how to do that, and what's more want to destroy this great country.

Cain's 999 and all of these flat tax plans have absouletly no chance of getting through the Senate.. Of course Cain hass zero change of becoming president.

Don't bother wasting your time with the debate, here's everyone's foreign policy:

                                Perry-Send in the military

Bachmann- Jesus will take care of it

Cain-Fixing the tax code will enable better foreign relations and world peace

Santorum- Get rid of the gays and we'll all be safe

Newt- Regulations on business are hurting foreign policy, especially Obamacare

Romney- I'll let you know after the next poll.

I wouldn't be surprised if the question was asked,"What do you think about foreign policy"

Romney stands up and says, "I'm for it"

Everyone agrees and that's the end of the debate.

Cain grabs Bachmann's ass on the way out.

Cain loves powerful republican women.... Just don't let him alone with your daughter.

and the next day Mitt is against it and Herman has never seen this Bachman lady before in his life.

Common... I agree. When they will be asked a direct question regarding foreign policy, they will bypass a direct answer by going to their talking points, usually off-topic. I think it will be fun if they ask Perry three things about our foreign policy he would like to change. He can't get past two on any topic!

Every GOP debate so far has highlighted the fact these clowns are unprepared and under-equipped to hold an organized argument much less to pretend to be serious candidates for the presidency. A foreign policy debate will only serve to expose them as candidates for village idiot.

I wonder if Cain has figured out that China has had nukes for more than forty years yet?
