Gov. Haley questions poll numbers

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Appearing on "Meet the Press" Sunday, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley seemed to question the validity of a South Carolina poll that showed her approval rating at 35 percent because, she claimed, the poll also showed that President Obama would win South Carolina, a reliably Republican state over the past three decades.

"You’re referring to a local poll that also said President Obama was going to win South Carolina," Haley said. "And I think everybody knows this is one of the reddest of red states. And in a time where he’s showing he’s falling in swing states I just don’t believe that to be accurate."

But the poll in question, conducted by Winthrop University, did not test President Obama’s general election prospects in the state, only his statewide approval rating, which was found to be 45 percent overall -- higher than Haley’s.

Winthrop University political science professor Scott Huffmon, who directed the poll, said Haley’s statement was "demonstrably false," noting that Obama’s approval rating in the Winthrop poll was statistically identical to his national approval rating and that the poll "didn’t say anything about Obama 'winning' South Carolina."

"She sure didn’t have a problem with this 'local poll' when we correctly predicted her gubernatorial victory in 2010," Huffmon continued, referring to a Winthrop poll that predicted Haley's defeat of Democrat Vincent Sheheen in the general election.

Haley spokesman Rob Godfrey told NBC, "The governor meant to, and should have, pointed to the president's approval numbers as opposed to the electoral outcome of the state."

An NBC News/Marist poll of South Carolina voters, conducted just after the Winthrop Poll (Dec. 7-9th), did in fact show President Obama with narrow leads over Mitt Romney (45 to 42 percent) and Newt Gingrich (46 to 42 percent).

That's hysterical that President Obama is 10 points more popular in a red state than she is.

Selling her endorsement to Mitt Romneybot isn't helping.

Polls are interesting things. Bottom line is sometimes they are spot on, and sometimes they are not.

What is disturbing to me are people who automatically jump to name calling towards anyone with whom you disagree - these are very small people.

I guess we are all going to have to wait and see, as a lot of things can happen between now and Nov. My vote is for any conservative that I can elect, no matter which party they are from.

It appears that Nikki hasn't figured out that the reason Obama is leading in the South Carolina polls! As with most everything else, Nikki is clueless. When you are as big a screw-up as she is, the voters actually notice and will go the other way in the next election, but don't tell Nikki that as she will just deny it also..

The only University polls I've found worth paying attention to are Quinnipiac and Solfolk University. Even then the polls are colleges experimenting/learning about polling and do not necessarily fully reflect reality.

Why is it TeaPubs have to lie, cheat, steal, disenfranchise, distort, delay, and deceive to get their point across? Why not just achieve support on the merits of your position? Guess you would have to have a credible position to do that, but you should give it your best shot nonetheless.

Is it because I as a voting citizen will weigh what you offer carefully, and objectively reject your inflexible exclusive ideology as being a disaster for the country? And if that is the case and your position only fits the narrow sentiments of a fringe citizenry, then why can't TeaPubs adjust to something more centered, practical, and successful for the country?

IF NOT OBAMA IN 2012 WHO?

Moxie Media come to mind? You probably continue to vote for democrats even though your state is being run into the ground by liberals. How many stadiums do you guys have that you voted against? How's that new tunnel coming along that nobody but your politicians wanted? And won't it be nice to have to pay for your paper grocery bags since you won't be able to have plastic anymore? Yes, you live in a fine liberal world so just keep voting for democrats and just keep losing your opportunity for choice.

The ironey in my mind is that she and Bachman tout the Christian "religious morals," yet the Tea Party and the GOP have a habit of supporting how many of the 7 Deadly Sins? I can name at least three; Greed, Pride, Gluttony and you could even through Envy in there for good messure.
This is almost as tragic as watching Newt Gingrich's stance on "Family Values" go down in flames in the mid-nineties, once his indescretions got out.
I would caution people on one thing, however, the three types of lies: Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics, all polls consist of are statistics...how accurate have they actually turned out to be in the past?

    Hey RON,
You guys already voted Dopey for two terms...remember Bush? Why not Daffey, I guess that would be Gingrich, Right?

As a former Republican, I am really dissappointed in the field this election. It has been a LONG time since I have honestly voted FOR a candidate, I voted for McCain Against Bush in 2000 and 2004, not that McCain was that considerably better of a candidate. Because I registered as a Republican in the primaries I couldn't vote against Bush in the race in 2000. With the farce of an election in Florida in 2000, it was a shoe in that there wouldn't be a fair accountability and we were stuck with Bush.

Paul F Governor Haley may be a sharp cookie, and being a politician is just the beginning of what should concern her:

Republican South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley was plagued before by allegations of an extramarital affair with Will Folks, the founding editor of the conservative blog FITSNews and now he’s back again. Only this time he plans on spilling his juicy accusations in a new book, an excerpt of which has now been revealed.

The alleged tempestuous story, as described by Folks:

We never took our clothes off that first night, but the physical relationship between us progressed much faster than I expected. . . . I asked her why she let me kiss her earlier that night and she said she didn’t know – a theme that would evolve and expand over the next few months as our affair blossomed.

Folks goes on to claim their early encounters were similar to “eighth-grade make out sessions” and elaborates even further with more embarrassingly kinky details. The last time such titillating rumors like this swirled about a sitting governor, Eliot Spitzer found himself resigning (although things seemed to turn out fine in the end). Given that Haley previously promised she too would resign if the claims about an affair were proven, after Folks’ book is published might we soon be calling CNN‘s new 8pm show Haley/Spitzer?

Yes I know, only polls from Grand Obstructionist Party approved polls are allowed.

Quote"You’re referring to a local poll that also said President Obama was going to win South Carolina," Haley said. "And I think everybody knows this is one of the reddest of red states. And in a time where he’s showing he’s falling in swing states I just don’t believe that to be accurate." end quote.......They said that about Indiana too, yet President Obama won that Conservative state. He also won Florida, North Carolina and Virginia. so Fuhrer Haley can just shut her mouth and live with the fact that her state hates her and the Citizens of South Carolina are tired of the Fundamentalist Church running things and are also tired of the obstructionism that comes naturally with the Grand Obstructionist Party.

            And thats my Opinion

Seems Ms.Haley wasn't all too anxious to discuss why she chose to not supply requested records under the FOIA (about how SC was going to implement the federal health care law). The fact that she withheld the requested information was eventually discovered when another agency actually supplied the pertinent info...guess they didn't get her memo about it. She told her staff NOT to follow through with what she said the state would be doing to determine what and how they would proceed and basically dictated what the outcome would be.

So she tells the world that SC will be convening a committee to study the issue, but in private, tells her staff what the "results" of the study will be. Nice work, Nikki.

When asked by reporters why this happened, video shows she stonewalled them and refused to answer the questions, ducking into an elevator, flanked by her staff. She was distinctly uncomfortable with the question.

Her numbers are dropping in her state at the moment, and with actions like this, it's doubtful they'll be getting much better any time soon.

Look for her to, hopefully, be gone next time around.

I correctly predicted in 2010 there would be a change of the guard and it happened. The TEA party became the thrust behind the change, and they still want to make changes. They have openly waged war on local, state and national level candidates including Boehner himself. They will float candidates all over America at the local level and state level because they know that's where the real change will be most effective, as that's where the real power will rise. That election gave us the confrontational army president Obama has encountered and which has spear-headed the fringe activity towards controlling the election processes. The primary elections are run by state and local governments, while caucuses are private events run by the political parties. A state primary election usually is an indirect election: instead of voters directly selecting a particular person running for president, it determines how many delegates to each party's national convention each candidate will receive from the state. In many states, only voters registered with a party may vote in that party's primary, known as a closed primary. It is tantamount and expressly important that every registered voter get involved in their state's electoral process and make an effort to clean out the Toxic Erratic Activist(TEA) who are hell-bent on subjugating the population. The concentration of wealth in the hands of fewer and fewer people and the concentration of power in stricter, less compassionate hands in all aspects of local, state and the federal government has colored the TEA/GOP/Republicans as the tormentors of the American dream. The concentration of wealth in the hands of fewer and fewer people and the concentration of power in stricter, less compassionate hands in all aspects of local, state and the federal government has colored the TEA/GOP/Republicans as the tormentors of the American dream. Every American should call, write and get involved in the electoral process and see who is really working for all Americans!

p111, the Tea Party absolutely tolerates the Republican status quo, that is to keep Obama as a one term President at any cost, including destroying the American economy.

The bigger problem for Tea Party is that they believe the 23% minority rules in a Democracy. "According to a Reuters/Ipso poll this week, 43 percent of Republicans either identify (23 percent) or identify strongly (20 percent) with the Tea Party. Among all Americans those figures are: identify 13 percent, strongly identify 10 percent." 13+10=23, just in case you need help doing the math.

"You may fool all the people some of the time; you can even fool some of the people all the time; but you can't fool all of the people all the time." Abraham Lincoln

                Kuddos Jake, Excellent quote!
I am not an Obama fan, look at the military pay raise last year and the proposed raise this year, inflation at over 25% and we get less than 1.5% cost of living increase, while we are still fighting wars...but I digress. The TeaPublicans are every bit as responsible for that as Obama, anyway.

The Tea Party is as delusional as Gingrich's chances for the White House. Bachman wants to "bring Christian values back into the US government...", there is a separation between church and state for a reason, case in point, Christian values, there are a lot more than Christians in America. Their values don't center around the Greed, Gluttoney, and Pride that the GOP/TP stand for. I've never heard that those were anything other than "Deadly Sins" anyway.

Rudy brings up an excellent point as well, in addition nearly all of the TP representatives have fallen in the polls, just as in Haley's case. They can't acknowledge that they have even less following than Obama does, with averages of 25 to 35% approval ratings in their districts.

Cindy, might I direct your attention to the first post in this thread?

re read the first post, and then come back and explain all about your valid points, and name calling.

Cindy, you may want to re-eveluate your view of this blog site, as I see it, Newsvine is a fair platform to expound on any view you have on any of the subjects MSNBC presents.
As a moderate, I am here to say that MSNBC is pretty moderate as news venues go...if you spend all your time being influenced by FOX or CNN, you have a little bit jaded perspective of what ACTUALLY constitutes a "Liberal" web-site.

Yes, thankfully obuma stuck to President Bush's timeline for troop withdrawl.

Yes, and Bushies cried and whined and pitched a regular fit over that, didn't they. ;)

                  chumbkt,
Truly not willing to concede that there actually was a pattern that had to be developed once GW left the White House in order for the military to meet the timeline? ...Bush never started one. If Obama and the Joint Chiefs hadn't set the ball in motion, we would still be stagnating in Afghanistan, and trying to maintain a foothold in Iraq.
The Bush plan called for a continued presence in Iraq for the next 15 years, is that the timeline you were referring to?

p111---you are correct that Republicans/Tea Party members aren't run of the mill liars. They are professional liars with years and years of practice. And they will only get better with more practice.

Nikki Haley is another typical Tea party member that can RE-WRITE History with the best of them. She said that she endorsed Mitt Romney because as President He would create jobs. What Nikki forgets to mention is that those jobs would be created in China like the millions of jobs he sent oversees while he worked for the Bain Company. If ANY of these Obstructionists get one vote it's too many. Obama/Biden 2012

Good and bad exists everywhere. Crazy is concentrated in certain areas.

Believing some BS when you say it and not believing when your opponent says it isn't really crazy.....

Stating something as fact today and doing a 180 tomorrow isn't crazy.....

Believing that you are the only one with truth and knowledge on your side is not crazy....

But when you combine the 3 one has to start wondering..

If you're a Republican and you want better poll numbers, all you have to do is say you're in favor of child exploitation. Then, like Gingrich has experienced, your poll numbers will skyrocket with "family values" Chri$tian$.

Funny -- politicians spend all kinds of money on polls. But then when the polls tell them what they don't want to hear, they tell us they don't believe in polls and think we're stupid enough to believe them.

China would be so happy to have people vote Republicans as they can have more jobs created in China and US can have burgeoning unemployment number. Vote no one but Republicans and hasten up the process of the demise of the American Empire And god of republicans ,G Norquist have a great laugh and party as the emperor Nero had, while Rome burned.

Seems as though the Tea Party Governors like to live in that world of denial and are far from reality, this must explain why they think the constituents in their respective states will buy their terrible policies they are trying to unleash on their states?

Thats what happens when you only watch Fox, The republican propoganda network, you begin to believe the lies they spread. Yes Haley, the republicans are even less popular than the president. Oh and by the way, the presidents numbers arent low because he is a lefty, they are low because he swung to far right trying to appease the freak show that has taken over congress (tea party).

I got a "pole" you can contemplate. Polls are such an inaccurate waste of time. Go interview a thousand people on the west side of town. Then the north/south/east. Interview and poll 50+ year olds, then go poll 18-30 year olds. Then interview whites...then blacks.......women...then men.... rural versus inner-city, atheists/agnostics versus church ladies or Tebow fans.

MAN! I can't wait till we're done with the elections. We got another 10+ months of this crap?

The Beev-- It's not the election that is frustrating, it's the polls. I have simply started ignoring the polls and will be sticking to my instincts on who is the best candidate/candidates. The only thing polls are good for is creating jobs for pollsters!
