Funny thing you should mention the Whigs. The Democratic party stated as the Jeffersonian Republicans and became known as the Democratic-Republican party. This party had two factions, One that believed in democracy and the other emphasized Republic type freedoms. It was a coalition that opposed the Federalist Party(Pro-Big Government).

When the Federalist party disintegrated, The once united factions began to jockey for supremacy leading to the split into the National Republican and Democratic Parties. The national Republicans were weaker than the democratic party, until Andrew Jackson became president. He was so Iron fist-ed that many abandoned the democratic party and joined the National Republican and a anti-Masonic group to form the new Party called Whigs (English party that favored the colonists). The name was pure political pay, because they wanted the democrats to look like the control-freak Tories of England.

Whigs were a bit isolationist, and focused on infrastructure improvements, but the real strength of the party was the Resistance to Democratic over-control.

The Republican party of today was actually formed to oppose Slavery. The big issue of the 1850's and most Whigs Joined the new party, causing the Whig party to shrink to extinction. The Democrat party positioned itself to be Pro-slavery, and as it did, it lost more members who went to the Republican Party.

What happened to the republican party could best be described as Laize-faire. They did free the slaves, but because of laize-faire (non-interference) policies and fears of falling popularity failed to safeguard minority rights. As Democrats re-took the state and local governments back from republicans, each state instituted "Jim Crow" laws.

After the last state returned to democrat rule until 1963 when Pres Kennedy figured out that the Minorities were a large enough voting block that instead of inprisoning them, that if they helped them and then they could count on their votes at election time. And ever since then, they have constantly portrayed Republicans as racist, haters, crooks, liars, cheats and despots. When in reality, the republican party was guilty of not being persistent and vigilant to promote a colorless society.

Political Advertising by career politicians must, as a matter of course, be negative either against an opponent, policy, or philosophy. A positive campaign would entail saying that I will seek to do this or undertake to do that, a dangerous statement for a career politician to make. Firstly they know that they have no intention, nor do they have the power to undertake anything without the acceptance of either their funding or party masters. Secondly it is likely that someone will try to hold that up as an example of what they didn't do when their next "performance review" (election to them but the rest of us in the real world have these thing annually or ever semi-annually). The process for career politicians is simple say anything that the voters want to hear, do nothing once the election is finished this is the best way to avoid adverse reactions (in the real world we call this "risk management"), do a lot of finger pointing it must be someone of something else, spread the blame for adverse situations "the party policy" "the general economic conditions" "the opposition" the foreign relations situation" "protecting our position in the World Order" ect ect ect, always make speeches and points in public which are a direct distraction from the issues at hand ...... then commence the whole process again.

It was amusing to come home from attending the Sioux City debate to see how the FOX post-debate show attributed the boos to Ron Paul and the cheers towards Bachmann. At best it was indiscernable during that exchange but I felt Paul's supporters were more vocal over all. I just hope that if he does continue to get shunned that he runs as a third party and gets more support than Romney.
