Gingrich says plenty about GOP rivals but says shots are not attacks

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich speaks to supporters Saturday in Columbia, S.C.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Making his last pre-Christmas campaign stop, Newt Gingrich maintained that he would not attack his fellow Republican candidates, although he still had plenty to say about his top rivals in Iowa: Mitt Romney and Ron Paul.

Gingrich seemed to take more direct shots at Paul, saying during a speech before an outdoor audience of at least 300, that Paul is "the only person I know who’s for a weaker military than Barack Obama."

"We ought to be honest about this. His positions are fundamentally wrong on national security. I do not agree with him that America is at fault for 9/11. I do not agree with him that we can ignore an Iranian nuclear weapon and I do not agree with him that it's okay that Israel disappears."

Later, when asked by a reporter about controversial articles published in Paul’s former newsletter (which Paul has disavowed), Gingrich said Paul needed to clarify how he profited from the publication, and suggested Paul's professed obliviousness to the articles made him unfit for the White House.

"I mean, these kinds of things are really nasty. And he didn’t know about it? He wasn't aware of it? But he's sufficiently ready to be president?"

And while not overtly attacking Romney, Gingrich several times characterized him as a "Massachusetts moderate," questioning his claims to a conservative record but adding that he would not say anything stronger than that about his opponent.

Later during a media availability, Gingrich again denied that the "moderate" moniker was a jab at Romney. "How could you think that was a criticism?" he asked NBC News. "I think it’s an accurate description of who he is."

When asked by a supporter whether he would respond to Romney’s Iowa-based attacks by "telling the truth" about Romney’s record as a moderate governor, Gingrich responded, "that would be so painful."

What "got my goat," Gingrich added, was when Romney called him "not a reliable conservative."

"Let me get this straight. The Massachusetts moderate who did not support Reagan/Bush and did not support the Contract with America wonders if I am a reliable conservative. How would he know?" Gingrich asked.

And while Gingrich maintains that President Obama is his only opponent, he has begun issuing a similar challenge to Romney as he has to Obama: a one-on-one debate.

"I’ll bring his negative ads and he can explain them. And so far he has not seemed as excited by the opportunity as I thought he would be."

One supporter tried to give Gingrich fodder against Romney, asking him if he was familiar with a story that showed Romney's company Bain Capital squeezed profits out of a South Carolina-based company by slashing jobs there in the early 1990s.

Gingrich said he was not familiar with the story but told the woman that if she wanted to "share that with your six thousand closest friends, that’s certainly your prerogative."

While Gingrich said he was not familiar with that local issue, he demonstrated a grasp of other South Carolina-centric concerns, including the modernization of the Charleston port, a crucial center for jobs in the state’s Lowcountry.

He also stayed neutral on another hot-button local issue: the presence of the Confederate flag in public places, an issue which tripped up Sen. John McCain during the 2008 primary here (until 2000, the flag flew over the statehouse, at which point it was relocated to a memorial directly in front of the capital).

"I have a very strong opinion. It’s up to the people of South Carolina," Gingrich responded to an audience member’s question, eliciting cheers and a standing ovation from many in the crowd.

How hypocritical...and so typical for Newt. Gingrich is a broken man running a flawed campaign with a deeply offensive ideology as its core lodestar. Newt has fallen so steeply that he is now just another fading Republican presidential primary flavor-of-the-month, an anti-Romney adventure that flopped with amazing alacrity. The GOP is destroying itself from within. Republican establishment types have every reason to be concerned about the late rise of Newt Gingrich. http://www.sunstateactivist.org

I agree Mattpfl they are destroying their selves from within.. And the Confederate flag stance he is taking is nuts...If he really wanted to be president of the United States he wouldn't take that position...I think he wants to be president of the red states...These candidates are dividing this country but fortunately it will not be a 50-50 divide because I refuse to beleive that 50% of the people would support the confederate flag or have no opinion about it...There is nothing nostalgic about that war or what it was fought over...Those flags should have been made illegal during and after the war since they represented treason...I think anyone flying one should have it shoved where the sun doesn't shine...And doesn't this prove the real reason they can't stand the president I mean c'mon they can't sleep thinking about a man with any more color than Boner being the top dog...

Typical newt!

The only thing he can come up with to hit Dr Paul is something that was debunked 15 years ago (racist) and his views on American imperialism. (taken out of context of course)

That's all you got Newtie? most people have already heard those and cast them off as not even close to reality. You need to get a new line, how about explaining all the hypocritical situations that Dr Paul has exposed in his ads? why don't you refute some of those?

Maybe someone will listen to your crap if you could just explain one of those issues. (I don't think you can) Honesty hurts doesn't it Newtie?

Get a clue Newt, just like Mitts, you are done.

The only thing I will ever agree with Newt on is that Dr. Paul can not run from those neo-Nazi newsletters that he made money off of in the 90's. Its not enough to say that you didn't know what was in them. When the American GI's liberated Hitler's concentration camp victims-- no one in Germany claimed to know what was going on in them.

Happy Christmas Eve and Hanukkah to all

I see again they are yukking it up over @ the John Birch Society aka FOX NOISE. The bleached blonde monkey girl bimbo and the 2 dunces next to her misinterpret intentionally what President Obama said about “LAZINESS” from the ABC Barbara Walters interview.

PRESIDENT: Right. But when I’m mad at myself, it’s because I’m saying to myself, you know what, you could be doing better; push harder. And when I — nothing frustrates me more than when people aren’t doing their jobs. Although — sorry, I shouldn’t provide two answers. The thing actually that I most dislike is cruelty. I can’t stand cruel people. And if I see people doing something mean to somebody else just to make themselves feel important, it really gets me mad. But in myself, since I tend not to be a mean person, if I get lazy, then I get mad at myself.

=============================================================================

Notice the fools mentioned nothing about the cruelty comment. Why? Because the haters @ FOX NOISE ARE THE MOST BIGOTED, INTENTIONALLY CRUEL, AND VITRIOLIC GROUP OF NEWS CASTERS ON THE PLANET.

A new RWNJ conspiracy theory about the First Dog, Bo.

First Dog, Bo was flown to Hawaii on tax payer dollars.

Instead, the First Dog, Bo showed up at President Obama’s side Wednesday shopping for treats at PetSmart in Virgina. So what is Bo doing back in Washington shopping at PetSmart?

America needs a leader.

Everyone falls for all the hyperbole of "no red states - no blue states," "I am a uniter," "I will extend an open hand," "I will reach across the aisle" ...... blah blah blah

Everyone decrys the influence of big money in politics yet we have a president that devotes probably 40%+ of his time trying to raise a billion for his re-election .... we have challengers with their super PACs ....

Everyone says they hate negative ads, negative campaigns ....

Yet it always comes down to catch phrases, sound bites and negative ads paid for by the unions, corporations and the rich .... it comes down to media talking points and tabloid demagoguery ....

And this is how we pick our "leaders?" This is why we are where we are.

If we are fortunate, we end up up with someone who "reaches across the aisle" and our politicians make pork-laden deals to benefit their re-elections while driving our debt through the roof, or they kick the can down the road .... and then bragg about their accomplishment.

We need a leader.

We don't need someone who "reaches across the aisle" - it changes little. We need someone who reaches the American people.... someone who can inspire and change divided minds ..... someone who can get most Americans to follow - not just his political base. Change people's minds, the representaives of those people change their mind.

This was Reagans success. This is Obama's failure.

It is interesting to consider that if we eliminated everything in the process we all decry ... the influence of big money with the negative ads, the duel of mindless soundbites, the battle of media talking points and tabloid demagoguery .... had just the minimum public financed campaigns where the empasis was on a serious series of debates, not the timed / canned crap that passes today, but where the candidates could exchange and challenge of each other's ideas .... where our politicians had the real chance to change preconceptions ... where perspectives are honestly enforced or altered ... or as Newt suggests - a series of Lincoln-Douglas debates.

Make fun of Newt all you want, but doesn't even Obama acknowledge Lincoln as one of America's greatest presidents .... and isn't that the way Lincoln was picked.

Btw - Regurgitate all the old baggage you want, all the Newt ad hominem about Tiffany's, Pillsbury Dough boy, divorces/affairs years ago ..... then consider we are in crisis, that we are not picking a Saint but a leader to get us out of this mess ...... what do you think of Newt's chances in that format?

Newt is not perfect, no one is.

I am not endorsing Newt, but really .... how many of you honestly think Obama, Romney or Paul would win that?

It is obvious that Newt uses the "Humpty Dumpty" rule of grammar: A word means what I mean it to mean, nothing more, nothing less! I don't lobby, I don't attack my rivals, I cheated on my wives because I love my county too much!

People seem to be more worried about his affairs rather than what they should worry about with Newt--huge numbers of ethics violations that he paid his way out, being asked to resign his speakership in disgrace, all the hypocrisy and revisionist history this so-called "historian"promotes, the way he flies off the handle, that he would call to account judges that do not rule in favor of the laws he wants to promote (in other words, judges would be free to render their opinions only if they agree with the conservative agenda?), force christianity (what version?) to be the state religion (he better watch out on that one--many evangelicals do not consider Catholic christians to be christian at all), enslavement of poor children--this is what some people call a leader? Newt has way worse baggage than his infidelity! I certainly do not want this man representing me on the world stage!

I believe that our President would be very capable against Newt in any debate but I’m sure Newt would have a much stronger showing than McCain but only if Newt can get out of the way of his own ego.

However we will never know since Newt will never be the Republican candidate.

Dennis,

I have to go in a minute, but let me just quickly state that, although I am not a doctor, I honestly believe it doesn't take a doctor to understand that Obama meets the diagnosing criteria for the narcissistic personalty disorder.

Btw - I would never praise anyone for having a personality disorder.

The DSMIV, in general may list as many 10 - 15 criteria for a personality disorder. A diagnosis may be made when a certain number of the criteria are met ... say 8 or 10. The point being that someone may have 7 indicators and would not be diagnosed where someone with 8 meets the threshold. Then there are the cases where someone meets 10 .... where someone meets 14 out of 15.

There is a matter of degree, of severity. Newt may be one to a lesser degree than Obama.

Then again, Newt may be a narcissus with histrionic personalty disorder features where Obama is a narcissus with anti-social personalty disorder features.

Then again, you have to ask how many presidents don't have features.

Regardless, there is a difference between a guy saying "it was my idea" and someone who is so detached from reality as to suggest he is the 4th best president in history with the record Obama has.

I have to go, but let me know if you want to go into it further.

Regarding a debate, Obama has nothing he can stand on that means anything to anyone other than his hardcore base.

Newt is smart, knows his stuff, has a record of accomplishment that is meaningful, admits his shortcomings, recognizes his faults and has the debate skills to utterly destroy Obama. It would be historic.

Thanks for your comments Dennis .... and have a Merry Christmas.

Bob,

The Lincoln-Douglas debates were not "the way Lincoln was picked." They were part of a campaign for the U.S. Senate in Illinois, and Stephen Douglas won that campaign. Yes, I know that state legislatures actually chose Senators in the 1850s, but since the debates were a way for the Democrats and Republicans to campaign for control of the Illinois legislature, in effect, they were a campaign for the seat itself.

Anyhow, this had nothing to do with Lincoln being elected President. That was a different campaign, in which he and Douglas did not debate each other.

Other than that, your analogy works!

I used to refer to Michele Bachmann as the Mama Grizzly Bear. Gonna change that. She is the mama Elephant (as in GOP elephant). Yes, little Michele is the big Elephant mama now, and if we don't put her in the White House, we have no one to blame but ourselves when the nation literally collapses before our very eyes. It's now or never, folks and fellow Americans. We've got one chance to save our nation and that is to elect Michele Bachmann and let her lead us. If we fail to do that, it won't matter if we are Republicans or Democrats or DTS. We'll all be in the same boat together, with no captain. Really want that? How can you really want that? Anyone...anyone...who says they would not vote for a woman for President, just doesn't remember how hard the women worked back in the 1920's to win the right to vote -- suffrage, it was called, and we ended up passing the 20th Amendment to give women the vote. Well, why did we go through such nonsense when we won't elect a woman President? How hypocritical. How mean and cruel. We gave Obama a chance to fail and he failed. How big a risk is really involved in giving a real woman a chance to succeed or fail. What do we have to lose? Rather have Perry, or a loser like Mitt Romney (ask Massachusetts)?Elect Mama Elephant. The other candidates aren't even worth mentioning. Paul is the most dangerous of the bunch.

What has Israel done for us? Let's see. How about Jesus Christ? You see, you are only thinking about Israel in a narrow context. From ancient Israel came our Lord Jesus, my friend. The Holy Land is still the Holy Land, and it will be forever. So two of the world's real religions (there are lots of fake ones) came our of tiny Israel, with God's blessings. I have belonged to both, first as a Jew, then as a Christian. Now we see how important that is, and without those two religions, America is nothing but a mistake. Really want to see that? Please give it some real thought, folks. If you aren't a Jew or a Christian, you are an aetheist (atheist). If you really want to go to Hell forever, that's entirely your choice. Most people will choose Heaven, however. How can anyone with common sense hate Israel?

The "teabaggers" are another name for the "know nothings" and the "American Firsters" from other generations. They slither out of the hole in the ground that they live in, do great damage to the nation (trying to keep us out of WW II for an example) finally, people wake up to the idea that they are clueless and dangerous, and they are forced to slither back to their cave.

But as Rob99 says so eloquently: timing is everything. Fascinating how the "teabaggers" slithered forth when the nations first black, Democratic President took office.

But Pee Wee Reese was still the shortstop when I began following the team. And one of the stories I love to this day is when some fans were booing Robinson and Reese walked from his position at shortstop over to second base and put his arm over Jackie's shoulder. It was an incredibly brave thing to do, and it's doubtful anyone else on the team would have done it.

Its representatives held up a bill that would give a needed tax cut to 160 mil American workers and previously held up a bill that was necessary to maintain the US credit rating abroad. In the words of my favorite fruitcake-- "Thanks, but no thanks." The party of no became the party of never when the Tea Party reps showed up in Congress.

Chuck, you are absolutely correct about how the Tea Party will change the republican party and influence the transformation of our country. I have some problems with the movement, but overall, it has at least gotten Americans to start rubbing their eyes and come out of their slumber.

Reading all the other comments reinforces the fact that it will take some much longer to wake up. It is frustrating to hear people denegrate whole classes and think they are making substantial contributions. If you're trying to influence other people... mix in a little logic and reason (and maybe some proof) with the hateful rhetoric...

Only to a Republican is the label "moderate" an insult while the highest compliment is to be an extremist. Which explains why the country is being slowly flushed down the toilet.

Moderate is not a dirty word to the Republicans. We GOP'ers believe that it is better to be a moderate Republican than any kind of Democrat. Democrats are (oh, oh) just refuse to let go of their belief in theories that have never worked. Idealism lives in the GOP, not the Democrat party. Real freedom lives in the GOP; Democrats grasp onto government for their reason to live. Theh GOP finds freedom where it really exists -- in their own hearts and minds. I once was a Democrat, backed the Kennedy family, and took a somewhat liberal stance on everything. Now, I am a tried and true Republican, because I know that if you give up your freedom to government like the Democrats do, you are the enemy of Liberty. I choose Liberty, now and forever. That statue in the New York Harbor is the Statue of Liberty, not the Statue of Government Rule. I accept the challenge of many Americans who have decided to fight for our liberty. We aren't afraid. We aren't going to accept "second best."
            We are Republicans.

His campaign went broke before recent fundraising because of Newt's insistence on luxury digs and first class treatment. His ego knows no bounds. In the WH he'd expect royal treatment and the hell with the rest of us!

You're right about what he'd do in the WH. But then again, Obama has taken FULL advantage himself hasn't he? Why do these guys think that "public service" entitles them to the fruits of OUR labor? If either one had earned their perks through personal endeavor and personal risk in the private sector, then leave them alone to spend it how they wish. Why do so many think that public service should enrich a person?

Well, now just maybe everyone will understand why if you are a solid conservative, you need to leave the republican party. They do not support solid conservative principles like freedom for everyone, liberty, taking responsibility for oneself, basic honesty, nor even personal integrity anymore.

I left, and now can feel a lot better about myself. The republican party is all about the corporate collectivist takeover of America, screw the individual.

It is NOT about marching to the beat, it IS about knowing what you stand for and being responsible for it.

Look at how they attack Ron Paul, Dr Paul defends LIBERTY, and they are trying to trash him! Trash the Constitution? They don't believe in liberty and justice for all anymore?

Is short, NO they Do Not!

A Vote for Ron Paul is a vote for Freedom, Liberty and Justice for ALL!

I supported Reagan when I was a child because he seemed like an honest man with integrity...But then when I was able to vote I saw all the damage to human rights they did in this country while always starting wars to protect other country's human rights, really they just like war...So when I could vote I registered Libertarian...Then I read all of there lit. and some books and I changed to independent....Now since I am almost 40 I am a registered Democrat and am more progressive than liberal, but I still have a few conservative views but never enough to vote for any far right candidates which is all there is to choose from now...

I am not quite sure why people think that Ron Paul is for the people. He voted for all the bush tax cuts that created our huge deficit. He even voted for the billion dollar oil companies to keep their special tax cuts. He claims to be against corporate take over and then voted them more tax cuts so they would have more money and more power in which to affect the elections.

For the people he voted to not raise the minimum wage, once again for his corporate masters. With his tax cuts and deregulation Paul is just as much for the 1% as any other republican running for president.

I distrust Ron Paul more than any of the others as he seems to be trying to pull a Walker over our eyes. You know run on one platform and then do your best to destroy our nation.

Can't forget Mr. Pacifist. The last time he had a chance to vote on the Iraq war and to end it, he voted with the republicans to continue the war with no end in sight.

You need to look at how Ron Paul votes, not the lying things that come out of his mouth. Tell me how if you had a newsletter coming out in your name that you would not read or even okay things that were being said in your name. Right?

@ post #9 ... It is not any business of the Federal Government what S.C. does with it's flags. All wars are about economics, the north wanted MORE slavery. They wanted to enslave the 94% of the people who didn't own slaves, they wanted FREE raw materials instead of cheap from the Southern people. By "winning" the north has placed a big central government over us. We ALL lost that war! But you can't tell anyone from phially anything .... they know it all.

Gingrich (a Virginia resident) and Perry fail to get their names on the primary ballot in Virginia.

Only 10,000 signatures were needed. In just 4 weeks the people of Wisconsin have gathered over 500,000 signatures in their quest to recall Scott Walker.

Gingrich Campaign Director Michael Krull: "Only a failed system excludes four out of the six major candidates seeking access to the ballot. Voters deserve the right to vote for any top contender, especially leading candidates. We will work with the Republican Party of Virginia to pursue an aggressive write-in campaign to make sure that all the voters of Virginia are able to vote for the candidate of their choice."

There is a small problem with this strategy, though. Write-ins for primary elections are illegal, according to Virginia state code. Thus, it appears that if Gingrich heads to the polls in his home state’s primaries on March 6, he would have to vote for someone else.

IMO, There is nothing wrong with being a conservative, as long as you practice what you preach. Nor is anything wrong with being a progressive, as long as you don't try to tax people to death for stupid programs. But the tea bagging crowd wants to do away with programs that help all of us.

I enjoy clean air onpolluted waters, etc. AND I don't need anyone messing with my reproductive rights. And that is what those tea bagging POS want to do.

I, for one, don't care if you kill your baby, I just don't want my taxies paying for it.

I am a member of the Tea Party Patriots, a term derived from the famous Boston Tea Party that launched our war of independence from England. I've got a great idea. If you hate the Tea Party, move to England. Only your kids won't move with you .. your kids have too much sense to do that. Rule Brittanica. Or find out what the Tea Party Patriots are all about.

It's really sad we don't have any candidates worth a nickel for the GOP. Since I was a 18 yr old draftee during a war and could vote this is the worst field of candidates running for office. Most times it is vote for the lesser of two evils, but this time around all are evil for a president. Need a new system of voting among a three party system at least or just one party, no partisan. I have heard from thousands of voters say I'm so sorry I voted for the SOB through the years.

Evangelicals? Is that some new religious faith you have invented in the brilliant ranks of MSNBC? Wait just a minute. You are demonstrating a hate for Christianity. There is no subbelief called Evangelicals in the Christian faith. Go to any church and you would learn that. Michele is reachiing out to Christians. And well she should. No one else is -- except perhaps Perry and Santorum. I am supporting Michele for about two reasons, one of which is her strong Christian Faith.

So I have to believe that the writers of that headliine hate Christianity, are enemies of Christianity, use the term "evangelical" intentionally to convey that disrespect for Christianity, and don't care who knows it. There is no subculture called "Evangelical" in the Christian faith. If any of you attended church regularly you would know that. Preachers beg all members of the congrregation to be evangelical at all times. I support Michele Bachmann because she is a Christian and a true believer.Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
