Just when we thought the Republican presidential primary season was about to essentially end -- with Mitt Romney's expected victory in South Carolina -- we today received a reminder that it isn't over.
At least for now.
In the past 12 hours this Thursday:
-- New polls, including the NBC/Marist survey, showed Newt Gingrich gaining ground on Romney in South Carolina.
-- The Iowa Republican Party released the certified results showing that Romney didn't win the Jan. 3 caucuses.
-- In a surprise, Rick Perry dropped out of the race and endorsed Gingrich.
-- And ABC released a clip of its interview with Gingrich's second wife, Marianne, who charged that former House speaker asked to have an open marriage while he was having an affair with his now-third wife, Callista.
What a day.
Politico's Jonathan Martin, writing about the crazy day of activity, says the events "could determine whether the campaign effectively ends this weekend or continues for weeks or even months."
And as Mike O'Brien notes, the day isn't even over -- the 17th GOP debate of the cycle is set for tonight.
Of course, today's wild day epitomizes what has been a wild campaign season. The poll surges and declines. Herman Cain's rise and fall. The Super PAC attacks. Flirtations by Donald Trump, Sarah Palin, and Chris Christie. Perry's "Oops." Romney's $10,000 bet. Bain Capital. Tax returns.
And we're still in January.

You sure GOT that right!
As if the food fight today wasn't enough - we get a bonus for dessert with the 149th GNOP debate!
Sometimes, I feel like Alice @ the Mad Hatter's Tea Party! ;o)
*popcorn* ?
Every hour today brought more ammunition for the Obama campaign. Every story cast doubt in the minds of the electorate whether any teapublican candidate is fit for office. Even grover norquist has got to be shaking his head!
Nope.
Again, 90% of the population is not paying attention.
Further, even assuming they were, your premise Wayne is not borne out in today's polling in the NY Times.
Not Rasmussen. The NY Times.
Take a look, it might prove insightful.
You said it, Feisty, and Wayne!
Another debate, might be interesting with the Cayman Islands backdrop.
The Obama campaign commercials are writing themselves as we speak - compliments of the GNOP! ;o)
Well Spanky, I would imagine at this moment most people are on their way home from work and know nothing about all of this unfortunate news for teapublicans. As you well know, today's stories will not be reflected in polls appearing this afternoon. Some of Mitt's Bain problems are clearly sticking, or an immoral weasel like Newt would not be on the rise.
"Nope.
Again, 90% of the population is not paying attention".
Yowsa Spank:
BBBBBBut But But but what about all the poles that show the president behind Mitt if the "election" were held today. LMFAO......
Wait a second - I heard 'It's better in the Bahama's'...
Evidently the Caymans are better for "vulture capitalism."
They might be doing that Wayne, but more likely they are on their way home looking at the price of gas, a far more immediate and personal concern.
As for the Caymans - no evidence of any wrongdoing, just sound tax planning.
Actually, President Obama leads all in many of the polls. Even Mitt by 5 % points.
The last I heard, the president does not set the price of gasoline. That would be your pals in the 1%. As far as sound tax planning, as I have already stated, it may be legal to do what Mitt did, but it is surely immoral. Certainly it is a severe miscalculation for a man fantasizing about the presidency to invest millions of dollars in a foreign nation state. For now, we will allow Mitt his "Walter Mitty" moment.
As for the Caymans - no evidence of any wrongdoing, just sound tax planning.
But you know it isn't about wrongdoing right now, it is about the fundamental unfairness of the tax system. Later on we may find there was wrongdoing, but we are not there yet.
Earlier we agreed that the IRS would probably never be able to take on Mitt Romney. Romney has too much wealth for the IRS to touch him. He can hire an army of lawyers that will defend Romney too the death (the death of Romney's invincible bank account at least.)
All of which is irrelevant.
You know what is relevant? Romney makes more in an hour than most Americans make in a year and ROMNEY'S TAX PLAN WOULD CUT HIS OWN TAXES IN HALF.
Also too: When Romney was governor he fulfilled Reagan's nightmare by signing into law a program that BOUGHT PEOPLE ON WELFARE CARS. Republicans are going to vote for that guy? Really?
It must be embarassing to be that simple. You do realize that our President, Mr. Obama, is part of the 1%? Dontcha?
But that wouldn't be as fasionable as saying "Koch Bros ruined our nation single-handedly".....dribble, dribble, dribble.
Simpleton, political hacks.....that's what happens when you fall in love with a politician, you get blurry vision.
Michael1969: I would need to have blurry vision (after several hours at the Dew Drop Inn) to fall in love with almost any of the GOP clowns. Its too bad Huntsman couldn't gain traction, he was the best of the bunch. All that's left is Ron Paul, and he can't get any respect, even though he's been consistently polling higher than most of the candidates and:
1.) He doesn't cheat on his wife (do you really trust someone who does ?)
2.) He doesn't commit fraud on his business partners (see Marriott... Romney on Board and audit committeee.)
3.)He doesn't hate American soldiers (Santorum's anti-gay slams against real heros)
4.)He doesn't say one thing and do another (pick your favorite lobbyist/former congress person/senator/governor.)
If there ever was an honest politician, Ron Paul is the one, of course that's why the media doesn't like him, he doesn't have a checkered past to give them something to fill the 24/7 news cycle.
dirp, Ron Paul can be admired for not cheating on his wife, or commiting fraud on business partners or hate American soldiers and he has said few things that were different from his beliefs. That's the problem, his beliefs are way, way out in right field. They are impractical, unworkable and just plain goofy.
It isn't the media picking on him or somebody not giving him time to speak it is that his ideas are cockamaimie and nobody but a few ardent followers will have anything to do with him.
Wild? Wild? Hah! They just be getting warmed up! Wild is taking 3 granddaughters under 12 to Disneyworld! I will let you know when these guys get wild (maybe, if they come out swinging tonight I shall reconsider)
Yikes! That is crazy.
Me, I have the Monster Truck this weekend, barring rain.
I'm on call this weekend...you know so I can pay for those getting a handout from The Candy Man.
Things must be booming in the "rent a cop business" right JFK?
Nah, retired military and striving to be part of the 1%.
[Nah, retired military and striving to be part of the 1%]
Ahh...lemme guess...Mall cop, right?
Information Technology...sorry.
"And ABC released a clip of its interview with Gingrich's second wife, Marianne, who charged that former House speaker asked to have an open marriage while he was having an affair with his now-third wife, Callista"
Watch out, MSNBC.
ABC News led by Obama hack George S., is coming on strong, it may soon win the title of biggest Obama suck-up network....
Nice avatar, bOb...Nobody But Obama, huh...
It has been a day of Republican Circus Clown scandals and bomb shells
First off ......Tough tawking Rick Perry goes back to TexAss whimpering, limping and licking his wounds
Someone please tell Perry what an 'OPEN MARRIAGE' is
He thinks it's a new Reality Show on FOX
Doesn't occur to those burdened with an illogical Ideological filter that the the adults engaged in the FOR PROFIT media, unlike they, are motivated by RATINGS and demographics...
Addles the brain...that political disease of hyper-partisanship...
newts attractive to dorky men that look like him...no real man would vote for a turd who snitched off a dude for getting head....he is king of the dorks...
You forgot to mention Newt Gingrich's idea of putting kids to work in their schools, among other wacky ideas he's put forth. Guess they were too numerous to mention.
Newt's kids and grandkids were invisible and irrelevant to him until he decided to run for POTUS
Newt is about as cozy and family oriented as Peter The Great Of Russia
Just wait the Cayman Islands story of the secret bank accounts just broke ! Now they are saying he has managed accounts .I would doubt that very much. Everyone who has stock accounts usually watches them by the hour. Esp when millions of dollars are in play in a market that is totally manipulated .You can lose millions in the blink of an eye . Even Mitt isn't that stupid !
It will all come out about Mr. Romney real soon and then after Santorum gets sent home after Florida Romney will have the toughest cats to deal with then he could ever hope for!! Dr. Paul and Newt.
This was a great day! 2nd round to start this evening! I need more popcorn!!
newts attractive to dorky men that look like him...no real man would vote for a turd who snitched off a dude for getting head....he is king of the dorks...
Newts x-wife takes the cake...wow...who's next Mitt's 3rd cousin from Kentucky living in a trailer, telling us how He screwed him outta millions...The masses are the asses...most of the people slobbering over this story....need to get a job, over 40 hours, have some kids (after Marraige), and then tell me what REALLY matters.
can we please move on from an old egotist white fat ass lizard to something that better represents america, the newt has crawled out from some ancient rock to whip his forked tongue .. don't be fooled America, he had his shot two wifes ago and could not get er done .. SC Sons .. get rid of this trash this weekend please !
Newt: You can whine, you can complain, you can deflect by trying to point the finger at someone else but we know who you are! Not my kind of president.
ROMPER-STOMPER-DOMPER-DOO !@#$ HOW GLAZED-MAZED are YOU ?
Any one who votes for these GOD FORSAKEN Crooks and Thieves. Should get a BRAIN SCAN of whats left.
DO YOUR CANDIDATE HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU VOTE. FORGET WHAT THEY SAY or HOW THEY LOOK. DIG DEEP and SEE WHAT SEEPS.
You will surely be astonished at what you find out. Guaranteed!!!
This is great! Couldn't be better!
* Gingrich's surge means that he will be in it for a long time to come. I sincerely hope he makes it all the way to the convention floor. That would be almost too much to hope for, but I'm hoping for it anyway.
* This means that, as a gift from the Republican Party, we will have a genuine debate on predatory capitalism. It's really the only issue Gingrich has a hope of successfully turning against Romney and he hasn't been shy about using it so far. Gingrich will try to defend the position that it's just Romney that he's arguing against, not capitalism. But Romney hasn't done anything that isn't mainstream, everyday business practice in predatory capitalism.
* There's nothing like the threat of a candidate actually making it to the final round to bring out absolutely every little secret that exists. And Gingrich is such a low-life sleaze ball that I'm looking forward to a campaign that will have him looking like the Roman emperor Caligula before it's over.
GAWD! This will be great!
We want to keep the laughs coming, that's why Gingrich gets the surge again. Here's Gingrich on Obama's trip to Disney:
"I want you to think about the president standing with Mickey Mouse on one side and Goofy on the other," Gingrich said. "And I'll let you decide which Cabinet office he'll likely offer to the two of them while he's there."
Gingrich beat President Obama to the punch again!
He already offered a cabinet post to Goofy. (aka ... Palin)
Porter,
you obviously have Palin derangement syndrome. Are you still demeaning Palin when she's not even running fro anything?
You must still be Blaming Bush too. LOL
Obama's campaigning for a second term. Even HE has moved on from "blaming the GOP" because IT'S A LOSING argument.
I'm not the one who brought up the nut from the north, your sleazeball Gingrich did.
And, yes, I do still blame Bush. I even have his "Top Ten Evils" documented at my site. But since YOU brought up Bush, why is it that he is TOTALLY ABSENT from ANY and ALL campaigning??? Hmmmmmm ??? Are you ASHAMED OF HIM???
Porter,
Why shouldn't Bush enjoy being away from you snarling abusive liberals??
Bush had enough of the liberal media bashing HIM for the 8 years he served.
Besides, Bush said there should only be ONE President in front of the media and the American people at a time. He has class, unlike Bill Clinton, lol.
so, we are left with Obama who will probably continue to BLAME BUSH for everything that happens until the year 2030 !
Call me weird or what not, but I'm actually enjoying the Republican debates ... I mean, these people remind me of the 3 Stooges ... this is serious entertainment, folks! Only concern is that these are REAL ... and they are SERIOUS (I think???), and they are a reflection of what the Republican party has become since the Citizens United decision opened up the flood gates of MONEY (isn't this what the Republicans are all about?) to these SuperPacs, Corporations (as Mitt says-Corps are real people too), and other BIG MONEY contributors.
I mean, this party has turned on itself like a blood-letting around a school of piranhna fish ... these people will say and do ANYTHING to capture control ... anything! Its so funny, sad, confusing ... I just don't know. Never seen such desperate acts ... but please, ReThuglicans ... continue on. I'm already looking forward to the 2nd Season (General Elections) ... the ads, the stupidity, desperation, and lies ... don't forget the lies and false facts. lol
MacNFries,
I find it stunning that the kool aid is so strong today that you are actually calling men like Romney , Paul and Santorum "the 3 Stooges" ( Newt does have isssues, I'll give you that).
Here's a news flash ..........Obama is the so called "President" , in case you haven't noticed, who goes from vacationing to golf outings to fundraising to Disney to more golf to singing at fundraisers to more golf to more fundraisers.
BTW, the Reublicans are all WORKING !
Cry me a river. President Obama is one of the most hardworking men we have had the honor to serve us as President in ... oh, over eight years. Get this on the missing man that Republicans are all ashamed of now:
Bush spent 490 days as president at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, and 487 days at Camp David — one-third of his eight-year presidency — according to avid record-keeper Mark Knoller of CBS News.
Porter,
you left out that pesky little fact that Bush always WORKED at his ranch and Camp David.
Ask all the foreign dignataries and others who were there on official business.
BTW, how does it feel to see your so called President hanging out with Mickey Mouse at Disney and singing Al Green songs at fundraisers?
BTW, since everyone knows that CBS News is "in the bag" for the Democrats , I am not surprised at anything negative they wrote about Bush. Most of us don't trust what they write about Republicans.
Couldn't find anything substantial to write about I see!
Yeah ... Bush worked. Cutting brush. That was something he was actually good at.
Porter,
.......and Obama is good at hanging out at Disney with Mickey Mouse, singing Al Green songs at fundraisers , eating ice cream cones in Hawaii and golfing.
Does that make Obama a good President ??????
