More 2012: A shift in tone

“A year after a coterie of new Republican governors swept into the statehouses and put in place aggressive agendas to cut spending and curb union powers, sparking strong backlashes in many places, many of them are adopting decidedly more moderate tones as they begin their sophomore year in office,” writes the NYT

“President Barack Obama may be pushing a new plan to "bring manufacturing back" as a way to boost his own re-election case in key Midwestern swing states, but vulnerable Democratic Senators in the Rust Belt hope it will bolster their electoral chances, too,” Roll Call reports.

Our bombastic Teapublican governor certainly has not moderated his agenda. But guess what?

Last year Portland, Maine decided to re-instate the office of a popularly elected mayor. (We had gotten by with a mayor appointed by the city council.) This fall, we elected Michael Brennan, who actually has state legislative experience as well as executive experience. Now, the governor is pushing to cut spending on healthcare and hospitols which will have a serious impact on Portland, which bears the brunt of taking care of low income Mainers with health problems. And who is emerging as the most effective opponent to the Teapublican governor's agenda? Our new Mayor, Michael Brennan. I guess you could say he's the "moderating influence" in state government. And a hero comes along.....

Egilman,

Both at the state and national level the art of compromise and balance have become a lost art.

We need to look no further than Congress. Their gridlock is not in the best interest of the country. But how many of them will be reelected?

I'm no fan of Snyder, but he is showing more constraint than his other Republicans in the state senate. Problem is, when they advocate something he knows he has to tow the party line. Case in point, he doesn't think right-to-work legislation is worth it, won't push for it. However some of the more rapid House members are going to push for it because they know this is their best chance ever. Snyder will be forced to sign it because it was sponsored by his party.

Indiana must be an exception to the moderation. I wouldn't be surprised if Governor Mitch and the GOP came up with a plan to change the course of the Ohio River so that it runs a little to the south of South Bend and then west across the state. They are doing everything they can to become a "southern" state. If RTW wasn't bad enough, now they've OK'd a local option for "creationism."

This probably explains why those of us to the north see Indiana's southern border somewhere near West Lafayette, where those to the south consider that the northern border. What is ironic is that those who actually live near the Ohio River are more progressive than those who live in the interior. Apparently proving Darwin's theories, new species are developing due to prolonged separation of populations.
