Boehner calls Limbaugh remarks 'inappropriate'

House Speaker John Boehner distanced himself on Friday from Rush Limbaugh, calling the conservative radio host's words toward a women's rights advocate "inappropriate."

J. Scott Applewhite / AP

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, talks about a lunch meeting with President Obama to deal with rising gasoline prices, at the Capitol in Washington, Feb. 29, 2012.

Amid a growing media firestorm over comments Wednesday by Limbaugh toward Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown Law student who testified before a Democratic panel on the use of contraception, Washington's top Republicans said through a spokesman that Limbaugh was wrong.

"The speaker obviously believes the use of those words was inappropriate, as is trying to raise money off the situation," Boehner spokesman Michael Steel said in a statement.

The comment refers to Democratic fundraising efforts related to Limbaugh's comments, in which he called Fluke a "slut." Fluke had been asked to testify about the policy of Georgetown University, a Catholic college, toward covering contraception for students. Her testimony came amid a controversy in Washington in recent weeks regarding the extent to which religious institutions should be required to cover contraceptive services as part of their insurance policies, despite moral objectives to contraception.

"What does it say about the college co-ed [Sandra] Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex," Limbaugh said on his show. "What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute."

His comments quickly became political fodder for House Democrats, whose leader, California Rep. Nancy Pelosi, decried Limbaugh's comments as "outside the circle of civilized discussion and that unmask the strong disrespect for women held by some in this country." The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee additionally sought donations as a result of the outrage.

"I think my reaction was the reaction that a lot of women have had when, historically, they've been called these types of names and that really I think ... and that was initially, to be stunned by it, but then to quickly feel outraged and very upset by it," Fluke said about Limbaugh's remarks Friday on the TODAY show.

Sandra Fluke, the birth control activist called a "slut" and "prostitute" by conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh, talks to TODAY's Matt Lauer about Limbaugh's comments and the failure of a GOP-sponsored amendment that would have allowed employers to opt out of providing contraception in health plans.

Well, Rush wins again.

You people don't get it and you never will.

Talk about free advertising for his show.

Rush has a radio show. His job is to get people to listen. You all are so easy to tweak, it's pathetic.

If you think that his sponsors are going to give up 20 million listeners a week, en masse, your nuts.

Foor every one that may leave, and there won't be many, 5 more are standing in line witing to take their place.

Rushs' listeners are educated conservatives with money to spend. The kind of people Corporations tend to like.

"While Susan Flake is an idiot"

Why do you call her that? For supporting birth control and that insurance pays for it? I wonder if you republicans would rather pay for an unwanted child if someone did not use birth control. We thought you hated welfare.

Is it just that you want all babies born even the ones that are unexpected and possibly not wanted? Aren't there enough people on the planet for you already?

Contraception...pills/condoms are far less expensive than a baby.

Why is the right not outraged over erectile dysfunction medicines being covered by health care programs? Why is the right not outraged over the barrage of advertising for these products daily? No mention from any of the holier than thou righties about this license to have sex when obviously your body is saying no. Why doesn't the man just put the Viagra pill between his legs and deal with it. Now that is a visual I don't want to imagine.

Talk about free advertising for his show.

it may be free advertising, but this is how it starts.

remember glenn beck's comments on fox and friends that ultimately made fox news to actually subsidize and lose money on his show?

kind of the same thing happened to karen handel at komen.

sure, any press is good press, i suppose, but limbaugh is a charlatan who makes money out of destroying our political dialog. i dont begrudge him, of course not. he, like many of his conservative pundit friends, believe in free market. and the idea behind a free market is making money. laws, ethics, morals, doing the right thing are hardly part of the equation.

but in the words of limbaugh, hypocrisy is a good thing because it lets you know that there are still rules that people expect to be followed. just, you know, not him.

You skirted the question. One would usually think that talking about controversial topics would imply the use of real facts to assert one's claim.

Rush just decided it was more effective to use derogatory remarks.

So I say again, if his audience is so educated that they'd respond better to facts, why did he need to use inflammatory remarks to make his point?

A boot on the neck of women - hahahahaha

Maybe you should spend your extra time in life you have for outrage on how Islam treats its women - and try to encourage an American policy with some balls that would do something about that, instead of wasting your time on manufactured issues and false outrage. As others have noted Limbaugh needs ears - thats how he makes a living. He has ZERO policy making authority and calling people who listen names is not going to get you what you want, whatever the heck it is.

As a conservative I can tell you one thing - I do not care what you do with your body. Ok? Thats it. You can screw like a rabbit, or be celibate, I simply do not care. That said - you don't pay for my fancy tequila which is how I deal with my stress at the end of the week, so why should I pay for your DECISION or YOUR body? You want an abortion - ok fine. Go get one. As a conservative I don't care - it should be legal. You should understand and be able to deal with the emotional consequences of doing that. If not - I don't want to pay for your stupid therapy either.

Most conservatives find this issue, like that of 'gay' marriage, tiresome. STFU about it already, No one wants to make your abortions or your birth control pills illegal; we just don't want to pay for your sexual choices. Fair enough? Its not about YOUR vagina, its about my wallet. . .

WCA is typical of the type of people who listen to Limbaugh and watch Hannity, O'Reilly and Beck on Fox News. They are mainly uneducated, ignorant, gullible and misinformed mob-think rabble. These are people who need to be told what to think, because they can't do it for themselves.

Such mindless people are easy prey for the propagandists who spread disgusting lies about opposing candidates, and work them into a froth of fervor against any progressive programs that may benefit the citizens of the country because it might require them to pitch in and help somebody.

These people have been around for a long, long time. They were the rabble who called for Barabas the murderer to be released and let Jesus Christ die on the cross. In our time, Rush Limbaugh is their leader.

Comanche,

Fine, so I guess you believe that any prescription medication having to do with "what you do with your body" is fair game for insurers to refuse to cover? Like Viagra and Cialis, also having to do with "what you do with your body." Tit for tat. So to speak.

And where does the "you don't pay -- I don't pay" argument come from exactly? You don't pay my insurance premiums and I don't pay yours.

As for Rush, in addition to being a talk show host, he is the opinion leader of the Republican Party. Reps are afraid of him and kowtow to him, the recent past is littered with those who called him on his outrageous behavior and then had to kneel down and recant.

And, just like marriage equality, this is NOT a manufactured issue. It is one that appeals to a certain segment of the population and is used to drive the way they vote. I'm with you, though in that I think we agree that the country should be discussing real issues, not birth control.

I agree. I don't see any logical connection between a woman's advocating contraception and being a slut. Don't married women also use contraception?

Well, how about hearing from a WOMAN who is a Conserative, who listens to Rush, and who is tired of PAYING FOR EVERYTHING FOR EVERYBODY IN THIS COUNTRY!!! If this young lady can afford to go to Georgetown's Law School in the first place, then she can do like I had to do when I was growing up and going to college and like all of my friends had to do when they were going to college if they were not married already. GO TO THE DOCTOR OR THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT AND GET A PRESCRIPTION AND PAY FOR IT YOUR SELF!!!!! You have Planned Parenthood now, go there and get it!! I know that they are GIVING IT AWAY FREE to the 6th GRADERS out in CALIFORNIA where my daughter lives!! So I'm sure she can get it for free!!!!

I am disabled now because of an accident at my last place of employment, which was the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT!!! I HAVE TO FIGHT TOOTH AND NAIL JUST TO GET MY BENEFITS THROUGH WORKERS COMP. So please, STOP WHINING about wanting CONTRACEPTIVES for FREE. As a matter of fact, go to the drug store and buy a pack of CONDOMS and keep them in your purse. They work pretty good and their cost is minimal, I'm sure you can find enough aluminum cans to recycle to get the money to purchase them and that way you'll be doing 2 things to help this country. One, you'll be recycling and 2 you'll be keeping our deficit down by the Government not having to fund your free contraceptives!

Rush limpbags is a tool of the right wingers who panders to the lowest common denominator of American society. He is a misogynist, racist, liar, drug addict, hypocrite and fool. Anyone who listens to him lacks the ability to think critically and probably votes against there own best interests. I have listened to him before and he adds NOTHING to the national discourse other than hatred and partisanship which destroys this country. He takes his orders from those who would like to see this country become a test case for a modern feudal society where the wealthy own most of it and treat the middle class like indentured servants.

"No one wants to make your abortions or your birth control pills illegal; we just don't want to pay for your sexual choices. Fair enough? Its not about YOUR vagina, its about my wallet. . ."

Let me explain how insurance works. first it is not paid for with tax dollars. second you don't pay for my insurance. I pay for it. As a student I pay for it through my tuition, and an employee I pay for it with my labor, it is part of my pay. Same as you.

Now comes the tricky part. We all pay for each others medical care. that is how insurance works. we make an agreement when we buy insurance to subsidize everyone else's medical costs in return they subsidize ours. The insurance company's hope is that not everyone has medical needs at the same time. so I expect you to subsidize my wifes birth control pills and I will subsidize your life saving liver transplant.

It would really be nice if you would learn the facts and think for yourself and stop just following the propaganda of the right wing. It would be nice to have intelligent discourse, instead of having to disput halfbaked comments.

I've listened to Rush Limbaugh for over 40 years - mostly because I have family members who insist on listening to him, or he is on before or after a ballgame. He is a Sophist - his arguments only use the facts that benefit his own point of view. He is not intellectually sharp - he often contradicts himself within the same show. He is an ELITIST - insulting not only women, but people of every race, religion, and educational background - they exist for him to make himself sound smart and important. This is the mindset of people who listen to his program - and that's why so many uneducated and unemployed people listen to his garbage - it gives them a narrative that makes them feel better about themselves because they believe what he does.

If this were any other radio personality - these comments would have gotten him a one way ticket off the air. People shouldn't just turn him off or ignore him - they should e-mail every company that advertises on his program and ask them if his attitude towards women is shared by their company, and tell them that they will no longer do business with them.

NO... it's not fair... because we all PAY FOR YOU!

I can tell by your picture that you are overweight. Obesity is the leading cause of rising medical costs and it is a lifestyle choice. Why do we have to PAY for YOUR lifestyle choice?

You look like you have kids, which WE helped PAY for. Having children is a choice. Why do we have to pay for YOUR CHOICE?

It's not about your fat stomach or your worthless kids... its about MY WALLET. So why the f*** do I have to pay for your fat medical problems and kids? It was your choice to live that life.

This is what it all comes down to, paying indirectly through insurance plans for the choices of someone else. If YOU don't have to pay for birth control, then WE don't have to pay for your medical problems associated with weight gain or having kids. Your problems are not my responsibility.

Am reposting the collapsed comment above. I am really not sure what it takes to have a comment collapsed and maybe this will be collapsed but while I detest Rush and his ilk, I have to agree with the comment and would have posted one similar as I do understand that it's only SHOW BUSINESS. And this is the show business that millions of Americans clamor to listen too. I think I even saw a reality TV program where there is a process server going around serving eviction notices to forclosed on homeowners. Forget the likes of intelligent TV and radio programming, sponsers don't want to pay for it and the communcations companies want to put anything worth while on pay cable or computer servers and starve PBS and call it anti American. I can even believe that Rush probably calls up his other outrageous TV and radio buddies, like Stern, and says something like, "hey did do see the ratings when I called that woman a slut? I think I might even get a $100,000.00 bonus this week if I calculated the terms of my contract right. How about you, are you getting any attention. If not I have some ideas of how you can really ruffle some feathers and send your income into the stratosphere. I admit I actually listened to Rush a few times around 1995, but I got the message really quick that it was not worth using the electric to hear him and haven't since. If others did the same he would be gone. But like the 1st post said, this IS what the public wants and they are getting it. It's just that simple.

THANK YOU, Boehner. Rush Limbaugh is a loser. The people who like to associate themselves with him are losers and faux conservatives.

There is nothing wrong with conservatism. What FIRST READ will show you, however, is a bunch of people who like to represent themselves as conservatives and liberals, and are really just sociopaths. Look at the spew on this page, demonizing the opposition and all that matters is you can see a bunch of hateful people more like each other in their hate than anyone who is a thinking liberal or conservative.

I don't consider angry posts from ecoterrorists liberals. The only people who like to call ecoterrorists liberals are the people who are ecoterrorists themselves and conservatives who like to paint them as such for their own benefit.

Rush is a skank, like Lindsey Lohan. He's actually not a conservative. He's just a person who tells people to go to jail for abusing perscription drugs, all while abusing those drugs himself. He's an ass and makes money off of people too stupid to separate him from conservatives. If you like to associate yourself with that, you just go right ahead. Meanwhile, people with brains are already moving on from this.

White Collar Auto.......you said:

Quote......Ruken, he is in the business of controversial topics, that's why. He utters a single word and has you and the rest of the left heads exploding. Why do you all give him the power to upset you so much?......EndQuote

Rush Limbaugh is a prominent leader within the GOPeaParty. He even gives you folks your marching orders (i.e. Operation Chaos in 2008). Therefore, Rush Limbaugh is a proxy for the GOPeaParty. This situation will persist unless and until the majority within the GOPeaParty either stop listening to and/or agreeing with his outrageous comments and flawed observations.

So, whether you like it or not, Rush Limbaugh has become symbolic of your party. His belligerent, bigoted, arrogant, sexist, neo-fascist, amoral character is now firmly associated with your GOPeaParty.

We (democrats) feel about Limbaugh much as a prosecutor feels about a serially convicted felon brought forth as a character witness for the defense. We despise him, of course. But, we are happy he is proffered because his obviously vile nature serves OUR case.

You also said:

Quote.....You people don't get it and you never will.......EndQuote

Actually White Collar Auto, it is YOU who does not "get it". Rush Limbaugh is a liability for the GOPeaParty. We (democrats) understand and exploit that. You folks stumble on wondering why a growing majority views your party and its mascots with disdain and even contempt.

But, here is an opportunity for you to disassociate YOURself from Limbaugh's self-serving remarks. Please, tell us now if you agree with Limbaugh's characterization of Ms. Fluke.

BTW---All the good news regarding our domestic automobile industry must be difficult for you to bear. No doubt this is particularly irksome since it comes after (and because) your incompetent generation was shown the door (by President Obama).

This is the Limbaugh Meme: Say something incendiary, and after a tsunami of criticism, pretend you were deliberately tweaking liberals and the press, and that you weren't really serious, and wink wink your listeners "get it" and everyone else is just thin-skinned and/or stupid.

It's old, it's tired, and it's over. Limbaugh is the Father Coughlin of our time, and he shall go down in history as the villain he is.

That's pretty much the definition of a forum troll, except sometimes it's also that their arguments are so incredibly stupid that they try to pretend they are actually just trolling instead of admitting that they are wrong.

You obviously did not listen to her testimony. She said she has 1 partner, and she never said she wanted anyone to subsidize it. She said she wants the University to offer a plan that covers birth control. She very clearly said THE STUDENTS PAY FOR THEIR OWN HEALTH INSURANCE. The University does NOT subsidize the student health plan. Both Rush and you made up stuff about her and vilify her for YOUR story about her. In my opinion that s*cks, and you should both be ashamed. While I don't expect anything different on a liberal website like MSNBC, it's like watching lemmings dive into the sea. I would wager that the majority of the comments are by people that have never listened to Rush, and think that Comedy Central has a news program with Jon Stewart. Taken in context, Rush was asking a question. Ms Fluke is an activist with an agenda, that is being used as a useful idiot by Nancy Pelosi and the Obama administration. She chose to attend a Catholic University, knowing full well that contraception was not covered. Her claim that it cost $3000 for 3 years of birth control is ludicrous. Go to any Planned Parenthood facility and birth control is either cheap or free. $1000 a year for condoms would make her a very busy young lady with little time for her schoolwork. Like the OWS'ers, a bunch of whiners who never lived in the real world, but have six figure educations, complaining about having to pay their own way.

The larger question is, why does this women feel that I should pay for her personal choices?

Your not but she is. In 2013 everyone is required to pay for health insurance. Either through less pay as employers pay more for insurance or through direct purchase of an individual plan. A single person plan runs between 1,200 and 6,000 per year. Birth control costs between 180 and 600 per year. The health insurance cost is higher than the cost of birth control pills. It is a farce to call birth control pills a freebie.

Lets suppose the government mandated that everyone pay Comcast and Verizon for phone, cable tv, and a high speed internet connection package. Lets say your neighbor requests that Comcast provide a Spanish channel as part of the package. Would you trash your neighbor on national TV/Radio and call your neighbor is a thief because he wanted to watch the Spanish channel which is part of the package he paid for?

I question the GOP approach on this issue. Why choose women's birth control as the item to protest? Also why push employers mandate and not the individual mandate? As far as religious believes go I know some American citizens who do not believe in American medicine at all. They believe in herbal remedies only. However, I do not see you fighting for their individual right to not to purchase a health insurance plan for themselves that they will never use. I do not see you fighting for an employee to get paid additional money if they opt out of the health insurance their company provides so they can purchase a plan they can use.

Nope all I see is another attempt to control women.

I am a woman myself and I have already gotten the run around because I stated that a lack of medicine for endometriosis resulted in a miscarriage of my niece and nephew. I was told that birth control pills were not a medicine to treat endometriosis. I was told I was lying because the treatment for endometriosis it is hormonal therapy which is just another word for birth control pills. I was even told that my mom killed her grandchildren by asking for birth control pills instead of hormonal therapy. Note I was not even accusing the insurance company or employer as being at fault. I simply said that the tone that the men folk take about these issues is causing more harm than good. Even after this conversation with conservative men, I have watched men on the conservative side such as Rush Limbaugh trash woman after woman for being a slut looking for sex.

I am an independent who is a fiscal conservative. I generally go conservative, but I was laughing my but off watching Rachel Maddow last night. I apologize to all the other women out there for not being vocal enough to the conservative men about their rudeness. No one deserves this crap. Santorum is off my list. I am still watching Romney, Gingrich, and Paul but I will see how they react to these men before I make decisions.

So one no-name sponsor that I've never heard of pulls support. Whoop-d do. The dems, and Pelosi, are just trying to make Fluke into a martyr. How do you have $3000 dollars to spend on contraceptives in law school? Why is Fluke trying to get a privately funded, religious, organization to pay for contraceptives when Planned parenting is 3 miles from Georgia town university? How are you paying $60,000 a year in tuition and $3000 dollars in contraceptives anyway? In addition to contraceptives, they want their insurer to write them a blank check to cover any type of contraceptive they want. Get out of here! If you can't afford protection stop having sex!

In addition to contraceptives, they want their insurer to write them a blank check to cover any type of contraceptive they want.

If she is paying 60,000 in tuition which includes a student health plan, then she has effectively paid through a higher tuition the cost of the health plan. If birth control is included in that insurance plan as required by the Affordable Health Care act and birth control actually costs more (which I am not sure it does for an insurance company) then the cost of the student health plan increases (or decrease) which in effect changes the cost of tuition.

        What is disingenuous about the

attack is that it is about Fluke (a woman) defending why she needs birth control. It is ridiculous that she has to defend why birth control is morally acceptable. I also find the notion that she is getting something for free obnoxious. She is not. She is paying for the student health plan through her tuition cost. It is a bundled in hidden cost to her.

Instead of attacking Fluke on why she needs birth control, why not go after a system that forces her to pay extra tuition for a health plan that is not optimal for her through her through higher student tuition costs? Why didn't the school allow her to deduct the cost of the student health care plan from her tuition so she could choose a plan which included birth control? Why are the health plans negotiated by employers and institutions lower in price than individual purchased plans? Are health plans negotiated by employers and institutions a lower price?

However that type of reasoning would be a logical response for a fiscal conservative that is not trying to dictate everyone's morality. Instead the response is to attack the woman and put her on trial for requiring birth control in the first place.

First, it's not an attack on Fluke. What's disingenuous is the fact that those were the figures mentioned by Sandra Fluke as possible costs for contraceptives during law school. Fluke is never explicitly mentioned. The question posed is how, if you're paying 60,000 in tuition, you have $3000 to spend on contraceptives? If it's covered in the cost of tuition – and student health care plan --then why does it cost $3000? Apparently, it's an out of pocket expense.

As to the matter of it being optimal, sex is not a necessity. If you're getting $3000 dollars worth of contraceptives you're having a lot of sex. GeorgiaTown is a law school, so sex is extra curricular activity. Also, you can't argue that the expense of birth control merits religious organization include it in a health care plan. There's plenty of less expensive options to include abstinence.

Fluke presented a need for birth control, but the point is that sex isn't necessary to go through law school. It's not a natural hazard, and in the case of consensual sex, the responsibility falls on the student.

You don't buy an insurance policy hoping to use it. It's coverage, just in case. Contraceptives are premeditated. Who uses birth control unintentionally? As with any insurance coverage, the person being insured will only have to pay a deductible. Given that the majority of the cost will fall on the tax
payer, it is in essence freeloading.

Instead of making a religious organization capitulate, she could have gone to federally funded planned parenting and got a plan from them. Making Georgia-town pay for it essentially says they're okay with premarital sex, which is morally unacceptable. No one is arguing the merits of birth control, but rather Georgia town having to pay for it. Why should Georgia town have to negotiate at all for an activity it doesn't condone? So, you think it's right to force a religious institution pay to cover sexual escapades? Instead of trying to demonize conservatives, why aren't you asking why liberals can't accept responsibility?

I question the GOP approach on this issue. Why choose women's birth control as the item to protest?

I'm pretty sure this debate began not by the GOP but by George Stepenopholis during the Republican Debate in January, where out of the blue he posed a question to Mitt Romney on limiting birth control. It was such a weird and out of place question, having nothing to do wiht the current matters at hand that it seems quite odd. However now it's more clear that Stepehophils, a former Democratic White House Senior Adviser to President Clinton, now masquerading as a Journalist, was probably assisting the Democrats in helping to frame a campaign issue for Obama. Sure, Rush Limbaugh's comments were sort of stupid, but the main premise is valid. If Fluke wants to have sex, then she should deal with the costs. I like to ski, so why don't taxpayers buy my Lift Ticket? If I don't go skiing, I might become obese with the associated health costs so the cost of a Lift Ticket is cheaper than paying my mounting medical bills, right?

Fluke presented a need for birth control, but the point is that sex isn't necessary to go through law school.

Really its not an attack on Fluke? It is not a judgement call of her behavior? The 3000 pays for a lot of sex comment alone shows lack of knowledge about how women's birth control works and everything it is used for. I should not have to make the following counter statements. Birth control is same cost for women regardless of how much or little they have sex. Birth control is also used to regulate menstrual cycles and menstrual cycles are not an extracurricular activity.

What she stated was that the "student health plan" she had prior to the Affordable Health Care act did not cover the cost of birth control after the Affordable Health Care act it would be covered by the student health plan.

My questions go to conditions prior to the Affordable Health Care Act.

        • Does she(Fluke) have the option of not paying for the student health plan that is bundled into tuition cost and student fees? I know my employer does not give me back money for opting out of the health plan.
        • If she did have the option to not pay for the student plan, could she get a better deal on a plan that covered her needs on the open market?
        • If she did not have the ability to decline paying the additional tuition/fees for the student health plan isn't that a violation of her right to choose a medical plan that best suites her needs? It is nice that the school offered a plan but that plan did not come for free and has been bundled into a higher cost in tuition and fees.

I would also argue that health plans already pay for the side effects of the sex extracurricular activities. STDs treatment and pregnancy are currently covered as medical conditions. So even the sex extracurricular activity is bunk.

Really its not an attack on Fluke?

No, those are Fluke's figures on the possible cost of Birth Control for a woman in law school. Birth control is a large umbrella covering a wide spectrum, which has many differing uses. Since the health care law doesn't just cover 'the pill' we must include contraceptives. Therefore, your assumption is that all methods of birth control, to include condoms, will only be used to control a woman's menstruation cycle? This does not follow that. That's also assuming that the only use of birth control will be menstruation regulation. If you're going to school to study law then sex, rather than menstruation, is extracurricular activity.

The argument brought forth by Fluke was that her friend was unable to pay a $100 out-of-pocket expense, stopped taking birth control, and developed an ovarian cyst. The problem is that experts disagree on using birth control to regulate an ovarian cyst, a sac of fluid in the uterus, as it may shrink on it's own over time. How are we to assume that Fluke was referring to that time of the month rather than an ovarian cyst?

Whether or not a health plan covers a std is moot, they're not all mandated to. This whole thing begins with the blunt amendment, which would have specified that religious organizations, such as Georgiatown, would have the option of choosing what they did or didn't cover. Now, the health care act is mandating they cover it anyway. I'm sure Fluke could have found a better health plan, which covered birth control; Planned Parenting is 3 miles from her campus, yet she's making Georgiatown do it, which goes against their moral standard.

Sure, Rush Limbaugh's comments were sort of stupid, but the main premise is valid. If Fluke wants to have sex, then she should deal with the costs.

The main premise is not valid. The main premise is that she is not paying for her health insurance which in 2013 will include birth control coverage.

          • An employee gets health insurance as part of their pay from an employer. It is not given to employee for free.
          • If a student gets health insurance as part of student fees or tuition, then the tuition or student fees includes the charge.
          • If an individual pays for their own insurance plan then the insurance is not free.

I did not see anywhere in the Affordable Health Care Act any place where anyone gets the health insurance for free. As a matter of fact they get to pay a fine to the government if they do not pay for health insurance. Health insurance for an single individual is somewhere between 1,200-or up per year currently and will go higher in 2013. Fluke testified that cost of birth control was as high as 1,000 per year (3,000 over 3 years). The cost of health insurance more than pays for the cost of birth control.

          As far as

I'm just stating my beliefs. Why are YOU trying to force YOUR beliefs on others by demanding that WE pay for YOUR decisions?

Show me how an employee is not earning their pay or how a student is not paying their way. I still have not seen it. If as an employer I pay my employee cash, and that employee buys something I do not agree with. I am not entitled to take the employee to court for steeling my money or violating my freedom of belief.

I actually do not agree with the Affordable Health Care Act because it does not provide any mechanism for keeping costs down with competition. However, I am not going to run around screaming that people who are purchasing an overpriced health insurance plan are steeling or looking for freebies because they are using a part of the over priced health insurance that actually keep the price of the health insurance down a little bit.

          @Middleground.

I'm not sure how you're under the impression that Fluke is paying for health insurance. She's on a public interest scholarship. Fluke is mainly a pawn here, so I won't go on over her. The issue is whether or not a religious organization should have to pay for contraceptives of students.

          Fluke said:

“without insurance contraceptives can cost a woman over $3000 during law school...Forty percent of female students at Georgetown Law report struggling financially as a result of this policy. One told us of how embarrassed and powerless she felt when she was standing at the pharmacy counter, learning for the first time that contraception wasn't covered, and had to walk away because she couldn't afford it.”

          I'll bet she was.

Fluke cited that her friend was using birth control as a means to control an ovarian cyst, which is disagreed on by experts. If she couldn't afford $100 for birth control I don't know how she could afford the hospital bill. Also, why didn't she go to planned parenting? The issue is that a religious organization will have to pay for any kind of contraceptive.

First question: If you're paying 60,000 in tuition, how do you have $3000 to spend on contraceptives in law school in the first place? Is it really going to impoverish you? That's $83 a month. Their textbooks probably cost 3 times that. $3000 dollars is an out-of-pocket expense for the forty percent of students who were uninsured. It's foolish to assume those forty percent of students used birth control to menstruation. What ever happened to tampons? And what evil is Fluke fighting? The blunt amendment.

The rule requires all group and individual health plans to provide coverage for prescription contraceptives and sterilization, exempting only those religious employers who primarily serve and employ individuals who share their religious tenets. The administration's recent "accommodation" does not alleviate the objections raised by religious groups and does nothing to address self-insured groups and individuals who purchase their own health insurance.

Oh my god, they can't exempt religious organizations *Gasp* what will Obama do? If only religious organizations are exempt then how does that give employers the right to deny health care coverage? Oh wait, this is liberals we're talking about here.

          @ItsWhatItIs

I'm not sure how you're under the impression that Fluke is paying for health insurance. She's on a public interest scholarship.

Here is a link to the Public Interest Scholars Program which is a partial scholarship not a full one to cover tuition. So yes she is still paying for her degree which I get the impression from comments made includes the health insurance. From her blurb on Georgetown's site she seems to also be paying back that scholarship by volunteering to help out others in the domestic violence situations. I had a few friends growing up who would have been appreciative of her help in the area of domestic violence. I do not question whether she has paid for her health insurance.

          As you pointed out though,

Fluke is mainly a pawn here, so I won't go on over her. The issue is whether or not a religious organization should have to pay for contraceptives of students.

Exactly my point. Can a religious college or university claim that they are paying for any part of a student's health insurance if they are charging that student money for attending the school and having the health plan?

Fluke cited that her friend was using birth control as a means to control an ovarian cyst, which is disagreed on by experts.

I believe whether it is or is not a treatment is up to the women's doctor to decide. That is after all what the doctor went to school for isn't it?

Also, why didn't she go to planned parenting?

Let's see could it be that planned parenthood is under constant funding attacks: GOP proposal to cut planned parenthood funding, Susan G Koman cuts planned parenthood funding, another GOP proposal to cut planned parenthood funding. If the GOP stops its attack on planned parenthood funding then I will be happy to allow this argument as a valid one. After all planned parenthood funding was signed into law by President Nixon a Republican.

It's foolish to assume those forty percent of students used birth control to menstruation. What ever happened to tampons?

Spoken like someone who knows nothing about women's birth control. A tampon does not control how often and when menstruation occurs. The women's hormone based birth control does.

And what evil is Fluke fighting? The blunt amendment.

Here is the a link to the full text of the blunt amendment. I have to say after reading this that it is definitely is not limited in scope to birth control. It looks like an attempt to reject anything based on moral beliefs. I know a 2 year old cancer patient whose parents paid for health insurance through a company plan. They thought the plan covered all conditions. However they were told the company plan does not cover chemotherapy. This is the type of behavior the Affordable Health Care act was trying to fix and the blunt amendment is attempting to add it back in.

My employer offers a good plan for me, but seeing how some employers are trying to redefine medicine I am wondering if employer based insurance is the best option for all individuals in the US. My liberal friends think this means we should lean toward a single payer option, but I do not have that mindset yet. I do wonder if there is a different way to fix that problem though. What if you required company plans to provide employees of the company with information about what the plan does not cover and what it does cover and for how much. Then you require companies that offer plans to pay employees cash in lieu of the health plan if an employee opts out so the employee has the option of purchasing a plan that meets their needs both medically and financially. Tie that in with requiring hospitals, doctors, and other care providers being required to post their charges up front. With all that information it would be pretty easier for IT to tie it together to show individuals whether they have a plan the covers what they need and add in competitive pricing.

Overweight? My BMI is 24 . . . I dare say Cialis and Viagra are not in my medicine cabinet. . .

As for how insurance works - if I use a drug and do not pay for it completely, it is subsidized by everyone else paying for that insurance.

If you get 'free birth control' or free abortions - who pays? The insurance company? Yeah right. Which means everyone else paying for that insurance subsidizes it.

When and if we go to Obamacare, if they give out free birth control pills, it does not matter which insurer I use, I am paying for it. This is NOT a disease people - SEX is not a disease. Pregnancy - is not a disease.

            Insurance should pay for disease.

Is this really this hard to figure out? Its not about free stuff - which it apparently is. There is NO free stuff - someone somewhere pays for your free stuff. I don;t get free stuff. I did not get a special $1000 tax rebate in 2008 - we had to pay for it. We don't get the full benefit of the childrens exemption, we make too much. We pay 52% of our income in taxes. 15.6% for FICA and SSI. 9% to the State. 31% to the feds, sales tax, real estate tax, insurance premium tax, excise tax, fuel tax, and taxes on the taxes. So when you give over half your damn income to the government - enough is enough.

How much should I 'allowed' to keep? CanI keep half of what I make? Please? Is that 'fair?'

              Insurance should pay for disease.

wrong, insurance should use whatever is most cost effective to prevent both disease and expense. prevention of disease is far less costly than curing it, prevention of unwanted pregnancy is far less costly than paying for it

birth control prevents unwanted births and the costs associate with care from prenatal to young adulthood. not to mention the completely legitimate uses of certain birth control pills for true medical conditions.

Pregnancy - is not a disease.

but it is a considerable cost for the insurance company which has to pay for said pregnancy, pre-natal care, birth, medical care afterwards, etc.

of course, you can't even consider those little details since it doesn't fit your political agenda

John, john john john...the hormone that we call birth control is used for many other things than just keeping women from ovulating, or however it works. It is a hormone that can help women with several other problems. You are just not getting that. That hormone is used to control cramping and bleeding, and a very very painful, harmful condition called endomitriosis. It is medicine used for women's reproductive health. It is medicine. Women need it to stay healthy. Can I be any more clear? There are more uses than birth control. Understand?

Boehner's hold on power is so fragile that unless the GOP/T caucus leadership is both figuratively and literally in back of him, he doesn't make his own statements.

Let's see: Rush commits this particular offense on Wednesday, Democrats complain on Wednesday and Thursday, even turning it into a fundraising situation, and Boehner responds -- through a spokesperson -- on Friday. Don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows on this lack of a timely and meaningful response.

Boehner's attempt at distancing himself from Rush's comments is affirmation of the huge amount of heat the republican party is receiving from their own members and constituents. As I said the money is pouring in to democratic coffers across the board, Rush has a huge audience, he has gifted democrats with the equivalent of a free public service announcement. He did a lot of political damage to his own party that's why Boehner has to address it and the fact that he is addressing it proves just how much damage he did. Why do 'politicians' R or D or whatever, have to distance themselves from an entertainer?

Because they realize a substantial number of their constituents pay attention to what the "entertainers" are saying. In the case of Rush Limbaugh, that information is presented under the auspices of being a right-wing pundit.

His listening audience has been steadily declining and he is no longer of any importance to anyone. And, now, he is hurting the GOP more than he is helping them. The only reason he is getting press right now is because he made sure he was so over the top that other media reported on it. Well educated Republicans (and there are a few left) do not listen to the likes of this drug addict. Even they are above Limbaugh.

Boehner couldn't get enough alcohol in him to control his twitchy lip, an obvious sign of trying to keep from busting up laughing at his own lies. He tried, but then he couldn't stand up.

...and Rush knows sluts and prostitutes.....personally, ....come on, LOOK at him. Who else do you think would cuddle up to that mass of hate-filled, putrid smelling, lip dripping moron?

How in the world does the off-color & inappropriate comment by a very opinionated shock jock become a brouhaha at the government level? As far as our congress should be concerned, Limbaugh is a private citizen exercising his freedom of speech & that, if he offended the woman, the issue should be between Limbaugh, Fluke & their attorneys. Limbaugh is in no way an official spokesman for the Republican Party or Tea Party. He has opinions, as we all do, & he gets paid to share them at his own risk. GET OVER IT!!

The real problem with limpballs (just giving him the respect he is due) is that he is the mouthpiece for the republican party. Whatever he says become the talking point for faux for the day.

Does faux repeat everything you say as a private citizen?

What about when Boehner called Limpy on the air for all of us to hear to ask his advise and then Boehner did what Limpy told him to do. Yep just another private citizen.

It is shocking how many self-described "conservatives" or "Republicans" have bought into the extreme positions now espoused by the GOP. But I am an old guy (68) so I remember.

                  1) Go read the 1956 GOP Platform.

                  http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php?pid=25838#axzz1nzQD3FNU

                  2) This was the platform of the Republican Party for Eisenhower's second term. Eisenhower was an incumbent and extremely popular, so his re-election was pretty much a shoo-in. For this reason, the GOP would be able to include some positions that it might not have included in the 1952 election. At that time the GOP was the "Party of Lincoln" and Eisenhower got around 70%+ of the African-American vote. (We don't know about Latinos because they were still "white" then.) The GOP was 60%-40% more popular with women because of its championing of women's rights (including reproductive rights.) Gays were virtually 100% Republican (remember the Log Cabin Republicans?) The GOP was popular with youth, mostly because of its stance on social issues such as support for Social Security and Medicare. You frequently heard the GOP described as the "big tent" because it could find good ground for both the wealthy and civil rights marchers.

                  3) But along came Lyndon Johnson and all that changed. When he signed the Civil Rights Act, he said, "I am giving the South to the Republican Party for forty years." The GOP smelled blood in the water and made a hugely bad decision: they decided, quite coldly, to fold the big tent and do whatever it took to move white Southerners from the Democratic to the Republican Party en masse. But first, some occupants of the big tent had to be evicted to make room for the white Southerners. Gays were some of the first to be thrown out. By the time of the Stonewall riots in 1969, the GOP was solidly lodged with anti-Gay forces and the Log Cabin Republicans became a sham. Somewhat cynically, the GOP assured the African -Americans in the party that noting would change while telling white Southerners that everything would change. Even the dumbest people in the world will compare notes on things like this. The GOP had to come out swinging and make sure that every American well knew that Blacks were no longer welcome in the GOP. Women were even more problematic and it this is where the abortion issue came into play. The message went out that women were welcome as long as they toed the party line, but otherwise, all bets on womens' rights gained with contraception in the 1950's were not going to be offset by a long and contentious public debate on how much women were willing to give up without much of a fight. It turned out that they were willing to give up quite a bit. Latinos were just babies thrown out with the bath water. So you ended up with a GOP that is far-right, white, male, and would consider a mainstream Republican of 1956 as being far to the left of Obama.

                  4) To pretend that people like Limbaugh do not speak for the Republican Party is just idle speculation that is contradicted by past actions. People like Limbaugh and Beck and Rove are the real voice of the GOP. It is they who are not hobbled by voters who might actually research an issue. It is they who can say things that are politicallin incorrect in order to pander to the madding crowd. It is they who really believe that it is possible, and actually necessary to cut 1.2 million jobs in order to achieve full employment. The GOP is NOT the party of women, NOT a party of minorities, NOT a party for equity among diverse citizenry, and NOT a party that wants to see this country advance if it means that they will not benefit politically.

I have contact with a lot of well-educated foreigners and I always tell them that this is not a multi-party democracy as it advertises itself. It is a Republic run for the personal profit of its elected officials. The country has three parties: a) The Republican Party or Conservatives who are basically southern white males and their political cohort. About 15% of registered voters. The Democratic Party or Liberals or Progressives are basically the remnants of the 1960-70's social consciousness movement. About 15% of voters. And c) Independents who are either single-issue voters or who do not completely subscribe to either party in toto. They are about 60% of voters. (The remaining 10% don't count, but can occasionally throw an election away as a spoiler.) And our politics work like a car: The Republicans are the brakes --- the people who say "No!" to anything that does not pass the white southern male evangelical sniff test. But that's all they can do -- stop things. The Democrats are like the engine --- all about go, go, go. They are classical cynics who believe that no matter how well you do, you can always do better. But once they get the car going, they depend on the Republicans to be the brakes. But it is the Independents who are the steering wheel and the throttle. They decide where the country will go and how fast it will get there. The only problem with Independents is that they are sort of "El Caminos" who can't quite make up their minds most of the time (just as the El Camino could not decide if it was a car or a pickup truck.) But for our three-party system to work, all three sectors need to be in working order and govern through construct and compromise.

It is looking more and more that the Repiblicans have staked out positions in this country that are untenable because they only have the support of the 15% and 20% more from the Independents. If you look at poll after poll, the Republicans are time and time again taking the 30% position in issues that are 30%-90% splits. What genius decided that it was a good idea to refight the disastrous biirth control battles of the 1950's? What brilliant strategist determined that everyone support "personhood"? What truly in-touch politician decided that NASCAR fans should adore him because he knows several NASCAR team owners? What clear thinker decided that gays were unfit to be Republicans when gays are some of the most politically active demographics in existence? This list just goes on and on. But does no one in the GOP see what they are doing to themselves?

The hatred the teaparty (Koch bro., Rove,et al backed) have brought to the Republican party has torn this country apart. They are out to self destruct and take our country with them. "Inappropriate" is insufficient. Other word choices? Inexcusable, unacceptable, not a reflection of Republican values? Nope. "Inappropriate" is the weakest, least objectionable word he could find to utter while patting Limbaugh on the back.

Women will stop this war on women. Women = majority of registered voters. Women = majority of registered voters who actually vote.

Boehner ought to complain that Dems are using this for fundraising. I, for one, am sending the Democratic Party a donation "on behalf of Sandra Fluke" for that very same reason. If Republicans don't want this to happen they should more than just "distance" themselves from Rush Limbaugh, they should vehemently reject him and his nation-dividing, hate-filled commentary.

The hatred the left wing shows toward Limbaugh has him laughing all the way to the bank. Limbaugh strives on controversy and there is no way his show will be canceled because he brings in to much money for the stations that carry his show.

Get a life, Limbaugh is not a political leader, he has the right to say what he wants, if someone don't like him don't listen to him.

BTW, maybe some of the women on here can answer a question for me. What cost the most money, birth control bills or condoms? What if the insurance companies, if they have to provide free contraceptives, just issued condoms in lieu of the bill? Condoms would appear the better of the two, because condoms also protect against STDs as well as pregnancies. Where the bill only protects against pregnancies, and not at the 100% rate.

SFCrest - A condom can not shrink an ovarian cyst or regulate menstration. Women have real issues when it comes to thier reproductive system. Imagine if a man were denied access to medication for the prostate? If that ever happens I hope thier are a panel of 5 women to judge that and a loud mouth radio person to call any man that wanted it a pu$$y.

The birth control pill is made of hormones. It helps with regulating the monthly cycle, migraines, ovarian cysts and many other things. The condom prevents pregnancy and protects against STDs. How about they both are covered, like Viagra, which only does one thing...provides the erection. Tired of the 'hold an aspirin between the legs' mentality. Why is it ok for men to engage in sex and not women. I don't get it. Tired of being controlled by men. Rush went too far again. Remember Rush is Reich. Call the FCC and complain, boycott his sponsors and be sure and let Premier Radio Network know your plans. If enough people raise enough he**, maybe something will change.

WCA, its that mentality that has 1 in 3 women in this country sexually abused at some point in her life. When its your daughter, would you appreciate what he said to this woman? They need to stop calling it contraceptives because obviously neanderthals don't understand the broad spectrum of uses.

Since you are so brilliant, you should realize the corporate sponsors will drop him if they get enough negative attention. There are plenty of mediums for advertising and honestly talk radio is a joke.

True. But this article wasn't about Limbaugh; it was about a Republican (Boehner) finally sort of saying Limbaugh's remarks were not appropriate. It's the first time a member of the GOP kinda disagreed with this filth. Through a spokesperson, not in person, of course; gives him some deniability.

Oh boo hoo. How many of you little liberal blow hards have called a person, no matter which sex, who was overly proud of their numerous sexual encounters a slut. NOOOOOOO. I'm sorry how perfect you all are in your own little heads, your little self righteous notions. You all can name call, but no one else can. remember Bush being a Nazi, but you all get all up in arms about being called Communists. Again boo hoo. For those who don't understand business, since most of you probably don't have jobs. He is self employeed. PRN is a broadcasting distributer, they don't pay him nor control his material. As long as he is in complience with broadcasting codes and ethics no station will remove him as long as they bring in the advertising dollars. Go ahead and contact his sponsors, they'll kiss your rear on the phone and laugh at you when you hang up. He brings in money to them and they are in business to make a profit, and that is what they care about. And if a sponsor would happen to leave, do you think there are not many more waiting in the wings to get the chance to have their name uttered to the largest audience in the nation over the radio airwaves? My point is if this young female, I will not call her a lady because ladies don't brag about how much sex they get only sluts and whores do, did not want to be opened up to possible name calling she should have kept her mouth shut, in more than one instance probably, along with other parts of her anatomy.

Limbaugh's show is syndicated by Premier Radio. Premiere Radio is a subsidiary of ClearChannel Media and Entertainment. ClearChannel is owned by Bain Capital, and we all know who is still a passive partner in Bain Capital.

sfcret - do you ever think to engage your brain (assuming you have one) prior to shooting off your mouth? Many women take birth control pills for medical reasons (I had to because of a condition that put me in the emergency room twice). Your lack of intelligence is only matched by your utter lack of integrity.

And, Rush's show can be cancelled. It has been declining in listeners for a while now and his continuing embarrassment may well be the end of his show. Will another station choose to air it - undoubtedly - because there will always be fools who listen to this hot air bag and get some amusement from him.

You've got to admit that Limbaugh sure knows how to tweak the left. As usual, the people who write about him don't listen to him. As such, they can only comment on what others write about him, which is always twisted into something other than what it is.

So, the left wants to get Limbaugh off the air. Funny thing about freedom for the left, they are only in favor of it if you agree with them. I've often suggested that if the left wants their point of view heard that they ought to put out their own talk radio shows. The fact is that they have and no one listens to them. So, the only way they can do that is to call it "news" and put it on TV stations like NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN and MSNBC.

As to Limbaugh's comments here, he was merely pointing out, in a way that was guaranteed to tweak the left, that Fluke's testimony amounted to "she wants to have sex but she doesn't want to get pregnant. It costs money to have contraception and she wants someone else to pay for it." Thus, the easy tweak comment is that she wants others to pay for her to have sex. Now, that is what a prostitute does. Have someone pay her to have sex. When looked at that way, it is quite funny.

On the issue of contraceptives vs. viagra, there is no doubt that there is a definite male bias here. But not for the reason people like to think. The idea of contraceptives is so someone can participate in a natural act without facing the natural consequences of the act. Sorry, but that is not what people buy insurance for. The idea of viagra is that the "normal" male condition is that they can have erections. Thus, when they can't, something isn't functioning as it should, thus insurance is used to "correct" this abnormal condition. Now, when it comes to the reality of these situations, a different picture appears. The fact is that the pill is used for a lot more things than merely birth control. But, since it is also a contraceptive, it is difficult for insurance companies to determine the real purpose, thus they may deny coverage. Personally, while it may be understandable, I do believe it is most likely the situation of penny-wise, pound foolish. It's a heck of a lot cheaper to buy the contraceptive than it is to pay for the child birth and subsequent health care.

On the issue of viagra: The fact is that 99.9% of all such medications prescribed shouldn't be covered by insurance. The reason is that it is a "cure" for ED. The fact is that 99.9% of men who get the drug don't have ED. From the beginning it was pointed out that ED is when a man can't get an erection. That means that he can't do it himself, he doesn't get them when he sleeps, nada, zippo. That really covers very few men. Obviously, I've never used the stuff, so I wouldn't know if the "experience" is any different than without it. But, I can certainly understand that men can have a hard time if they are on drugs, alcohol, medications, etc. or are just plain in a bad relationship. Guilt probably makes it harder to get it up is you are doing it with someone other than your spouse.

As to the issue of the church. This is definitely where the government has gone to far. Everyone knows the Catholic Church's stance on the issue of contraception. Everyone who works for the organization knows their viewpoint and usually accepts them, even if they disagree. Thus, if you want to have insurance with such coverage you are free to work somewhere else. The church shouldn't be forced to cover it. Anyone who buys Obama's distorted argument that he isn't making the church provide the coverage, he is making the insurance companies provide if for free is either ignorant or a fool. All insurance companies price their products based on what they are anticipating paying out. No business owner is going to willfully pay something out of their own pockets just for the heck of it.

That being said, yes, Fluke came across as someone who just wants to have sex but also wants someone else to pay to make sure she doesn't get pregnant. Rush made that point very effectively and the all the criticism is silly.

The companies who advertise on the Rush Limbaugh show employ thousands of people who do not even get involved with politics and may not necessarily agree with Limbaugh. To create a boycott that could cost innocent people there jobs is not only agregious but its unamerican. The last five years have created conditions for a firestorm of boycotts over illegal immigration all over the country, how is a boycott helpful to thousands of people who are punished for something they did not know about or had no control over. Home depot was boycotted over gay issues, Walmart was boycotted over hiring discrimination practices, Target was boycotted because of non-support for the Salvation Army bell ringers. Isn't a boycott a destructive way to highlight the need for a change that does not satisfy a given group. When the cure is worse than the illness why would any rational person want to harm innocent people in the process of opposing someone who is doing his what he is being paid to do and that is to describe the goodness of the conservaties and denigrate the socialist democrats. Isn't that exactly what Keith Olbermann does on MSNBC. If you are a democrat or a secularist that does not believe the Catholic religiion has a right to exercise their religious ideology, why would you listen to Limbaugh and get upset. Boycotts are damaging to many innocent people and when a boycott is conducted by any group it is nothing more than revenge and retaliation because other people do not share your values. If I thought I spent 29 years in the military to protect a bunch of whiny cowards who would boycott innocent fellow americans just to slam one individual, I would have give my enlistment a second thought. When you fire a missile from a drone to make a kill on an Al Qeada operative more often than not many innocent people are killed. This is called collateral damage by the Whitehouse administration. So while you may be able to brag about how you took some big mouth radio conservative down, understand you have done serious collateral damage to many innocent folks.

connmick: You might want to get out of the hotbed of liberalism and visit real people. The only women who are pissed off at Limbaugh are those who are always pissed off anyway. Unless you are of the gimme everything for free variety, a lot of women are pissed off that this country is going down the tubes and we are losing our freedoms. The economy is in the tank. The libs have done absolutely nothing to help, and in fact are actively making things worse by running up the deficit to pay off Obama supporters. Men are being turned into wimps. I love my kids, but the idea that they would sit on their butts complaining rather than going out and doing something about it is foreign to me, and fortunately my kids. I've seen way too many kids who are living with Mommy and Daddy so they can be supported. They may drive fancy cars and get their daily dose of Starbuck's, but they are doing nothing to take care of themselves. My kids grew up and learned to flip burgers, clean toilets and every other job the left thinks of as despicable. They learned some valuable lessons, ones that the left doesn't teach. First, they learned that there is no shame in rolling up your sleeves and doing grunt work. Second, if you don't want to spend the rest of your life doing such grunt work, then you work harder at doing the grunt work, take pride in what you do and work to improve yourself. In other words, you don't rely on someone else, but on yourself.

When they dated they learned not to fall for people who sit around and complain about their lot in life. They've found themselves usually hanging around with an older, more responsible crowd. So far, they are still "under the radar" of the left. They do know that as they get more successful that they will be entering the vilified and people will start complaining about them because they have money and how unfair it is that they were so "fortunate" to just happen to have the luck of the draw in life. It's all BS of course, but they've already seen it and know what to expect. Quite frankly, I'm proud of them. Sure, they are still friends with some who didn't "make it." But, they've learned to tell these friends that if they don't like where they are in life, then do something about it. Waiting around for the government to help turns into one heck of a long wait.

Bottom line is that out in the real world people are getting sick and tired of the whining of those who won't help themselves. If contraceptives is a big priority in your life and you do not want to get pregnant, then work a few extra hours to pay for it or search around to find someone to give it to you, or, alter you behavior.

                      Witchrunner,

Nobody is saying that people shouldn't be self-motivated or self-disciplined. But to say that there isn't a real need for (some) of these programs is asinine. If we don't help people have access to birth control, we'll have more unwanted pregnancies, which means either more abortions or more children that families can't afford (read: welfare). Both of those outcomes are anathema to conservatives. Providing birth control is the most cost effective way to avoid these two outcomes. People aren't going to stop having sex just because birth control isn't available.

And I didn't even mention all the other uses of contraception, other than preventing pregnancy.

hchris: As you are aware, things don't exist in a vacuum. That's why I pointed out the direction the country has been heading and the mentality that has become predominant on the left. I pointed out that insurance company refusal to cover birth control may be penny-wise, pound foolish. But, that should be their decision. If the Catholic Church doesn't want to cover something like birth control because they are against it, then they shouldn't be forced to do it. Just because some people perceive a "need" doesn't mean that everyone else should be forced to pay for it whether they want to or not. This is what we are talking about. The reason government has gotten so big is because those in power come out with an explanation that they know will appeal to some sense of "ok, that sounds good" type of feeling. China, Cuba, the Soviet Union and the rest of the dictators of the world spew out the same stuff. There's a reason why those countries lake in productivity and innovation. Things get taken care of for you then you lose motivation to do things for yourself. This isn't just about birth control.

Heck, I tell the libs the same thing that I tell the conservs. For the libs, if you think there is a "need" for a service, by all means, set up whatever charities you want and contribute to them and get others to contribute so you can meet those needs. I tell the conservs that if they want to stop abortions, rather than just saying "no abortions" they should be setting up organizations that will take care of women while they are pregnant and will pay the costs and jump through the legal procedures for those who want to adopt. Their attitude is that all they are interested in is making sure the baby is born. What happens after the baby is born? Not their concern. You don't win people over with that attitude and you do a lot of damage to babies who are born and not wanted. It works both ways. My point is that the government shouldn't be dictating anything like this. Why, because it's only fine if you agree. Plus, and most importantly, what has made America so great is the limits the Constitution places on government. It's being ignored left and right by dems and repubs. Keep it up and the US will be nothing like it has been, and that is not good.

That's verboten. Only liberals can call conservatives Nazi's so you have to understand the rule of double standards. Having said that it was inappropriate to say slut, the word should have been promiscous young lady. It was obvious that Luke was at the Congressional hearing to express an opinion to justift the Obamacare ruling by HHS. I listened to the C-Span broadcast on T.V. and it was like a hearing on a sex story. Mrs. Luke was describing her sexual activity needs like she had been coached for the contraceptive show and tell. Mrs Luke was not the least bit bashful and was being used by the left to justify the Presidents decision to violate the rights of the Catholic church during a Congressional hearing. Thousands of Catholic hospitals and charities will begin downsizing out of existance because catholic teachings will not allow abortion or use of contraceptives. The majority of Catholics agree with the teachings of the church, but many do not abide by the churches teachings, however it still remains an issue of the 1st amendment right of religious belief.

I find it very interesting the hatred you promote through your posts is no less than what Limbaugh promotes through his show. Do you actually think anyone should take you serious when you write what you write?

Anyone with commonsense knows this issue being thrown about isn't about health, it's about choice and the govenment making that choice for you as oppose to you making that choice. Quit being nannied by the government, grow up and become responsible adults. Either keep your legs shut (men, keep you member in your pants,) or pay for the contraceptive needed to prevent babies if you are not wanting to have babies! I as a taxpayer, should not have to pay for your contraceptive if you decide to have sex.

If you are taking contraceptives as a medically prescribed treatment for health reasons, that may be a different matter. I sure it can be produced under a generic name specific to the prescription so that the majority of people who believe as I do can live with the false impression that there is some control on it's destribution and that I'm not paying for some else's safe sex.

As I have said in other comment. Tax dollars don't pay for health coverage ( I don't think women over 65 are really worried about birth control) . But even if they did, that is if we had universal health care, health insurance is an agreement between us to subsidize each others health care. Do you want me to review everyone of your health choices, I don't think so. If you want to argue that birth control isn't a health issue, then it is just as easy to argue that providing an erection isn't a health issue. But the point is participating in health insurance is agreeing to not interfer with my health choices and I won't interfer in yours.

And to care that arguement even furthar. The right seems to want to claim some rights about their tax dollars. I don't want my tax dollars spent on this or that. Well I don't want my tax dollars spent on what you want it spent on, so we make an agreement a compromise. You can get what you want to a certain extent and I can get what I want. The country isn't all about you

Madison Terry - you don't know what you are talking about. When you are taking the pill for medical reasons, nothing else can be substituted. Clearly you should not speak about things you have no knowledge of.

Madison - even if you believe that on a core level and with all your heart and soul...it's too late. The Republican/Tea Party has taken this too far. What's more they've doubled-down. Look at many of the State laws passed by Republican majorities regarding reproductive issues. Come November the American People won't forget.

Madison Terry is a man missing his Viagra pills. I was on the pill while I was celibate for years! Why? Because I had an ovarian cyst and the doctors advised me to take them. Cyst gone, pain gone. It's not just to prevent pregnancy people. Get a real life and educate yourselves.

Limbaugh is a recognized expert on pharmaceuticals - just ask the rehab center where he spent some time. I suppose that made him believe he was qualified to speak about medical coverage for birth control (actually, birth control medications do much more than just prevent unwanted pregnancies - many women, especially younger women, need them for menstral cycle problems, as any legitimate doctor will tell you.

NDD....it is always the same with these cretins, say whatever, the more outrageous the better, the bigger the lie the better, and then eventually someone like Mr Milquetoast Boehner, says inappropriate. Or if I offended anyone, I didn't mean it, or I was only joking. NO.....y'all meant it. If you didn't mean it or if you felt it inappropriate.....you wouldn't have said or done it.

Apparently not NDD....but its been just 24 hrs, already the President has called Sandra Fluke, inquiring if she is OK. The President of Georgetown U. has put out a statement denouncing Limbaugh, this is only beginning. As I told my bishop when I wrote to complain about this whole controversy, this is a war you will not win. Nor will they, they severely underestimate the strength of the women on this topic. Question,

I understand the outrage, Rush is a professional and he should act like one. My question is regarding Sara Palin, back when she was in the spotlight and the vicious attacks that the media and people here at FR laid on her. How was that OK?

As a women I was appalled by many of the comments made about her. Regardless of her political affiliation, doesn't she deserve to be treated like every one else? You don't have to like her, but the attacks where far worst then the name Rush used on Fluke.

                              Neither should be tolerated.

FYI - I am not a fan of Sara Palin

As has been pointed out over and over, taking the pill is not just about contraception - it is about hormone regulation which can impact a whole suite of things - which I won't go into as you wouldn't understand. Viagra - which is covered - has one purpose only - to get men an erection so they can have sex. Now who are the sluts??

You need to look up the word. Fascism is State control. Tea Partiers are for individual freedom. The Left has more fascistic tendencies than the Right. (See GM, Health Care, Solyndra, et al.) A word doesn't mean what you want it to.

Franksam, for those republicans who don't know what a definition is or how to find one on the internet:

Fascism---1. An authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of government and social organization.

Fascism---2. (in general use) Extreme right-wing, authoritarian, or intolerant views or practices.

The need to lie is so strong in republicans, that they even try to change the definition of words to suit their lying rants.

This just shows how the GOP has managed over the years to get the un-informed to vote against their best wishes. The GOP method is to demonize...Obama is a secret Mulsim, a snob, the woman is a slut, etc, etc. A few years ago, before Rush was married (for the what time?), he was stopped by officials at the Miami airport, coming back from the DR with over a hundred Viagra pills. He was single at the time...so why does he need Viagra? What a hypocrite!!! He wanted to lynch anyone using illegal drugs yet he "shopped" around for his oxycontin. And 20 million listen to this guy every day? To quote the British officer in "The Bridge over the River Kwai" at the end of the film..."madness, madness I say, madness" Fiesty, you rock!!!

If the Pope speaks for God and you disagree with him, then why in the world are you a Catholic? Limbaugh is wrong and Catholic's who continually choose to ignore their Pope are hypocrites. Is the Catholic Church the one true Church of God on this earth or is it not? If it isn't, then why do you belong to it?

So, I thought Catholic doctrine was that the Pope is "infallible." Doesn't that mean he tells his believers what God's will is? That's the way the Bishops act. If the Pope says divorce, contraception and abortion are all sins, then they are. Arent' they?

In any case, I'm not Catholic and the Pope doesn't give me my marching orders. And he shouldn't be able to order American women around at all.

What is the catholic church's view of Viagra? It seems to me that viagra is marketed on TV ads primarily towards middle-aged men who are experiencing a NATURAL diminution of potency for their age, and who are in relationships with women their own age who are most likely almost menopausal. I thought the church position was that sex is for procreation. How are these middle-aged or older couples having sex to produce children? If the man can't get it up, shouldn't they just be accepting that as God's will, and concentrate on developing love instead of lust? Why is this a medical condition requiring medication and treatment and not just a life stage? If it's a mental health issue due to low self esteem, then other conditions should be covered that lead to low self esteem. Things like having a big nose or breasts too small, or too much belly fat. Or they could just buy a shiny new red sports car.

Meanwhile, hormone therapy for real medical conditions is either verboten or optional.

I notice that not one of the apologists for RL has answered the Viagra question. So here I go again: "Why is viagra for men a legitimate prescription drug, while hormone therapy for women is not?"

What Limbaugh said about this woman pales in comparison to what liberal commentators are saying about Andrew Breitbart. The liberal filter at MSNBC and the rest of the major news outlets is designed to incite the left and not much else.

Breitbart was a total a-hole. If you don't get that, you're too far gone for anyone to care what you think.

Good point lukewarm. That's the problem with politics today - it's all about hate. Forget about respecting one another - that's a thing of the past.

Politicians try and keep their "bases" fired up by using over-the-top rhetoric and attacks. The problem is that the impact is only short term and people become numb to it. As a result, they have to escalate it to a new level the next time around. The results are plain to see - both sides hate each other and refuse to listen or compromise.

As I see it, the right uses this more often than the left. That being said, there are a couple of the left who can be pretty nasty too.

dirt, there are two major differences between what RL did and what people write on this site say about Sarah Palin:

                                    1) she was a public figure and therefore fair game to criticism by ... the public

                                    2) the comments about Palin were made by private citizens on a comment board. not by a syndicated broadcaster with millions of listeners. Rush Limbaugh just opened himself up for a libel suit and I hope the young lady brings it and wins it.

Oh, please! If I hear that worn-out baloney about the "liberal media" one more time, I'll lose my lunch. For God's sake, get a new tune! Anyone who still actually believes the mainstream media is liberal need only read what it's been writing about Obama for the better part of his presidency. He has been pilloried by the MSM more times than I can recall, and in every case, he's taken it with grace and rebuffed it with intellect.

The problem is that the conservatives who make most of the noise are either idiots, blowhards, extremists or all of the above. The MSM just finds it hard to say anything positive about them because everything about their tactics is negative. Hatred, bigotry and narrowmindedness pretty much define the conservative approach these days, and this just doesn't make for very good press.

Obviously not enough to know that they charge a sliding scale - things are not "free" unless you have no income. But I suppose you are also "smart" enough to know exactly what this young lady earns?

Yeah, that's the GOP definition of "smart" - making it up as you go along and acting like it's the gospel truth.

So a citizen comes forth to have her voice heard in the public debate, and suggesting that it might be inappropirate to call her a "slut" and a "prostitute" makes one a liberal? This your problem, you people just keep drawing the circle in tighter around yourselves, and it is no way to affect change in a Democracy. I can't wait until November to watch what's left of you people all curled up in the corner in the fetal position, wearing tin foil hats and mumbling to yourselves while sucking your thumb.

So let them keep up with the nonsensical and vitriolic bantering, they'll be quieted soon enough come election day.

Rush just iced the cake with regard to the republicans respect for women and issues that directly affect them. What a political gift from Rush to democratic candidates across the board, thanks Rush keep up the good work.

Boehner is a right wing conservative nut job in many respects, but I tend to believe he has a heart and it is that heart that puts him at odds with a growing sector of his party called the Tea Party and Jim Demitt. I feel Boehner is what little is left of George Bush's compassionate conservatism. By the way GWB, abandoned CC in favor of Karl Rove's kill the nation to win an election conservatism.

Don't kid yourself, what compassionate conservatism? Bush, Boehner or any of the rest of republicans could not care less what happens to the people.

We can't have jobs, because Boehner has to protect the rich 1%, where is the compassion in that?

The republicans want to kill heath care so they can pay for more tax cuts for the rich like Romney and rich corporations. Sounds so compassionate.

Take from the poor to give to the rich, republican compassion working to do what it does best.

Right you are, they always say they want smaller government, but are the party that does everything they can to make the government bigger. They take away your rights and anything that may benefit the poor or middle class, while giving to the rich. They attack women, women's health, education and public schools. They attack voter rights, collective bargaining and the list just goes on while they at all cost continue to give to billionaires and the oil companies as gas prices continue to rise. They want you to believe it's all President Obama's fault..., all of this stepping on the necks of the poor while giving to the rich is the republican solution and fix!

Oh my....how could we Liberals be so stupid? Why would we not see this obvious fix for the poor and middle class, that need health insurance, the right to vote without a poll tax, education for our kids even if we can't afford to home school them because we have to physically work for a living, women's (52% of the population) health and birth control, I guess republican women are not allowed to have an opinion on this matter or they never ever used birth control right? Wow we really must be some dumb liberals, not to see the logic in this, cheaper to have unwanted kids huh..., brilliant!

Yeah, I'd agree: I think Boehner actually has a heart in there somewhere (like The Grinch), and he really wants to do what he thinks is "right" for America, despite being completely wrong on how to do that... Give him some credit for at least acknowledging the remarks are at LEAST inappropriate. Remember, he's going to face a backlash from hell from the rest of his party for even saying that.

I disagree: Boehner does not have a heart. He said, baldly, (and I bet he wishes he had never said it out loud in front of witnesses) that his entire goal was to make sure Obama was a one term president. Nothing about statesmanship, legislating, creating good policy. Nada. Just get the reins of power back into Republican hands. And until we do, we stall and filibuster and stonewall. And misdirect to non-issues like religion and birthplace. And weep. And ask Limbaugh for advice.

His real problem is that even he can see that the public face of the republican party is devolving into that of a drooling idiot. Independents and liberals were blind-sided by Rove's playbook of dragging the body politic into the bedroom on the laughably called "defense of marriage" issue, because nasty as politics is, we did not ever expect them to sink so low. Once the win-at-any-cost benchmark was established, there was no high or solid moral ground from which to persuade about anything. They put themselves on the slippery slope to irrelevancy. This is to say nothing about the internal inconsistencies of the republican playbook.

Oh, well. It will all be over soon.

The idea of a President who can shoot a decent left handed in jump shot is so cool. Obama 2012

I hope your mother and father gets cancer and dies a horribly painful death.

Hey, if it is good enough for you to hurl such insults I guess it is good enough for me. Right?

Here! Here! I am getting really sick of reading all this hate-filled vitriol from these supposedly "progressive" "compassionate" liberals.

You guys need to just get over Rush (and yourselves). He can say anyting he wants. If he thinks it was ridiculous for Sandra Fluke to go before congress and complain that her casual sex (and that of her friends) was not being subsidized then he has the right to say so (and I TOTALLY agree). Calling her a "slut" was probably a calculated move to generate the buzz that it has.

I would have called her a very silly little girl, but probably not a slut.

                                                    Peace OUT!

Its odd that you think Rush Limbaugh can say anything he wants, you don't yell fire in a theater ifthere isn't one and there are many times when stepping over the line is not only inappropriate, but is a hate crime and that is what Limbaugh has committed. The Republican leadership if it had any testicles would come out and comdemn it as not only inappropriate, but as hate speech. His comments had nothing to do with the actual content of her testimony, instead it was another pull it out of his ass fabrication designed to drive his hate mongering audience to new hights of insanity, and there is no other word for it, it is insanity. The insurance industry decided more than 40 years ago that it was more cost effective to provide prescription contraceptives than to pay for a woman to go full term pregnancy and delivery, tey are businesses that report annually and if you look at the cost of doctor visits, prescriptions, hospital delivery and stay, the costs are astronomical when compared to the cost of providing co-pay contraception benefits. What was testified vefore congress by Ms. Fluke was several examples of where contraceptives were beneficial to a woman's reproductive and general health, to label her a slut as Limbaugh did because his agenda is not about telling the truth but putting his version of conservatism back into power goes way beyond the pale, he is a serial pathological liar and its time he is banned from the airways, this is no longer a free speech issue.

I hope rush goes the way of that lying sack of spit breitbart
