McCain vs. the Clintons on North Korea

From NBC's Ken Strickland
Are we beginning to see the contours of a possible Clinton-McCain presidential race? In remarks today, Sen. John McCain (R) said the Clinton Administration's policy on North Korea "was a failure," calling it a "carrots and no sticks policy that only encouraged bad behavior." He also called on Senator Hillary Clinton (D) to stop blocking legislation that would accelerate missile defense. These remarks were released in a written statement today to compliment a news conference McCain held in Michigan where he was expected to make the same points.

"I would remind Sen. Clinton and other critics of the Bush Administration's policies that the framework agreement of the Clinton Administration was a failure," McCain said. "The Koreans received millions of dollars in energy assistance. They diverted millions in food assistance to the military. And what did the Koreans do? They secretly enriched uranium." He added, "When one carrot didn't work, we offered another." McCain also threw his support behind President Bush and his handling of the North Korea situation, including Bush's calls for action by the UN Security Council. And while he didn't call for immediate military action against North Korean, McCain said "it is obvious" the United States needs a larger active duty Army and Marine Corps.

Shame on John McCain. Shame on Bush. Shame on the Republican House. Shame on the Republican Senate.
"How about Sen, Hillary Clinton making a strong public demand on Sen, McCain to explain himself one more time and proceeding to counter all his his points afterwards." That would smack of reasoned, thoughtful, public discussion and examination of the facts - what sort of a madman is posting here?
Wake up People: -The Democrats in Congress are not living in the real world. You can't take away the tools needed to find Terrorists and intercept their Terrorist plots, if you really expect to defeat them. -You can't deal with Terrorists, they have one goal and that is to kill you, your family, your neighbors, and everyone else living in this country. -It takes more than 6 years to build a nuclear bomb, so Bill Clinton is fair game and responsible for not taking care of this back when they started developing the bomb (during his 8 years in office). -You can't make deals with lunatics and expect them to live up to the aggreements (that is just ludacris). -Slick Willy should stick to large panties and fat cigars (subjects he knows something about). -Hillary is evil pure evil. Heaven help us if she ever gets in the White House. I have no repect for her, she should have kicked Bill out when she had the chance. (I did not have sexual relations with that women) Yea right!!! -John Scarry is and idiot and can't make up his mind about anything. I have a plan!!! and tomorrow I'll have a different Plan!!!(flip-flop) -I too don't like McCain. He acts like a Democrat for 6 years, he comes to his senses and now claims to be a Republican. What is up with that? -Mark my words, George Bush will go down in history as one of the Greatest Presidents of our time!!!! -Sean Hannity is a great American!!!! -Finally there is a TV Network (FOX) willing to speak the truth and let the American public decide for themselves, instead of the brainwashing NBC, CBS & ABC like to do. -Love reign the Republican Party!!!!
Oh where oh where has my John McCain gone? What happened to the forward looking, positive John McCain who didn't bow to party pressure and play the politics of personal destruction? What happened to the guy who used to point the way instead of pointing fingers? Senator McCain, you started losing your authenticity of voice that made so many of us in the middle love you a while back...now I can barely hear you anymore...you're just another partisan talking head posturing for his base. So sad given that people like me in the middle used to be and wanted to be your base. You lost us Senator McCain...but more importantly, you've lost yourself.
Cuba exists....blame J.F.Kennedy for it. Iran....big threat...blame Jimmy Carter for it. Central America in flames....Jimmy's again. Were are all the Kerry's plans to fix the world. Is there any project presented by him about it? Ask Monica for Bill.... Democrats only wants to complaint about everything. They are the main factor of all the problems that we have inherited...Shout your mouthes please....the Americans are no idiots at all.
McCain is a piece of toilet paper of Bush.
Okay, this isn't funny anymore--you can't screw up when you're dealing with "real" nuclear weapons. We can't wait for the media to wake up. We've got to get every single Repugnican out of office NOW--the election is less than 30 days away and we all have a duty to take our country back from those who have run us off into a ditch. Take away the keys!!!
I use to have respect for McCain, but I lost it when he allowed the "Bush Machine" to degrade him and his family and then allow the same against John Kerry. McCain can't be trusted.
..and, senator mccain, let us not forget that it was a company that rummy headed that sold important munition supplies to the north korea.
Why are people pushing for Hillary? We all know that in the begining of the war both with Afganistan, and Iraq Hillary was on the republican side. Now she wishes to trash upon the republicans. I think the only reason she is running for President is to give her worthless husband Bill the chance at bankrupting the nation for a third or fourth time. Have people forgotten what a sorry excuse of a president he was? All the policies that worked while he was in office were instituted by his predicessors. Both Reagan and the other Bush. I say GO JOHN McCAIN. Lets get someone in office that has the brass to finish this war. We need a man that has enough to finish what we started. We do not need a facist female for president that flops to either side of the bed to suit her needs. Do we really want someone that was married to a dope smokin draft dodging piece of trash for our president. Democrats what are you really thinking?????????????? Even Lieberman would be a better choice.
At one time, I thought McCain was credible guy. Now I think he would sink to any level for his shot at the presidency. WHAT AN ABSOLUTE SCUMBAG TO MAKE A STATEMENT LIKE THIS. I think this statement alone just killed his chances in 2008. Is there anything that these CON losers do not blame Clinton for. Do they take any responsibility for any of their actions, failues? The only reason North Korea has the bomb is because Bush put mini-me on notice. Anounced the axis of evil to the world and proceeded to invade what they precieved as the weakest country. Not only are Bush and his cronies responsible for the debacle in the middle east, but now they have started an arms race in Asia. The incompetance is so extreme it seems intentional. Bring on the Rapture! Beam me up Scott!!! Like a theif in the night... IMPEACH NOW WHILE WE STILL HAVE A PLANET LEFT!!!
..and, senator mccain, let us not forget that it was a company that rummy headed that sold important munition supplies to the north korea.
aloha - wow -what a joy and relief to read the responses to McCains ploy to divert away from truth "R" style. Too bad-I think there was and could be much support for McCAin if he kept his spine and did not fold to his Repub bubs - he and hillary together would be good! Now if he is willing to lie with the rest of them - bye bye... Hope he reads this blog! mahalo sharon
"legislation that would accelerate missile defense" Is “Missile Defense” another word for “Star Wars”? It looks like someone wants to get some tax-payer dollars back to the corporations that paid to have them elected. We have been at this for 20+ years and every major test of these systems has failed. The best we have done is hit a missile with a homing beacon on the end of parachute. I think diplomacy might be a better option, and easier on the taxpayer.
Wow are only spinless democrates responding to this page. You all need to return your foreign tv's cars and walk to work for awhile. then maybe you can respect what our President has done for us. Is he or his administration always right?? No buy at least we did not sell our secrects to most of the world as the Clinton's did. Lets all face it yhe US Government is anmd always has been run by big money.
What a laugh! Old Rummy sat on the board of ABB, a european engineering company that was awarded a 200 million contract in 2000 to provde North Korea with both designs an key components to build two light water reactors. Ask old Rumsfeld about that now and all you will get is silence. Who do these fools think they're kidding. Americans are not that stupid. Anytime you want to round up all the whores, just start war! And remember, like cockroaches, for everyone you see, there's another 100 or more lurking in the walls. All CONS must go! Come November, everything is going to change. Can you say subpoena power!!!
I use to think sen McCain was a strait shooter, but he has done nothing but sit on the fence and flop back and fourth to suit the Bush administration and point the finger at some one else. Why don!t you all get with the program and look the problems directly in the eye and get something done.
In response to "Bill Clinton from New York" It's funny how you can change the subject from Nuclear weapons in North Korea to the Clinton sex scandal. How's that work? Take a serious relevant issue and ignore it- are you in politics yourself? You sound like you could be part of the current administration.
Wow. The 1/2 wits are out in force! North Korea never had any intentions on keeping their word on the '94 "agreement". By the way... the '94 talks were "unilateral" talks. Worked well right? Clinton and Jimmy Carter took them at their word and lost. That was the last best chance to take care of the North Korea problem for good. Now they have nukes. That changes everything. No such opportunity exists anymore. Bush was dealt as close to a "No win situation" hand by the Clinton Admin here as is possible. The plutonium rods that were under inspection by the IAEA is all good... HELLO McFly... SECRET URANIUM ENRICHMENT mean anything to you?!? Great... IAEA inspectors sat and watched the pretty plutonium rods all day... Geez Louise man... GRAB A BRAIN! Also... FYI... It is well accepted now that North Korea received nuclear technology from the A.Q. Khan network up to '97 (re: after they signed the agreement, and BEFORE Bush). And their didn't fire those missles over Japan (landing off the coast of Alaska) in '98 to carry a payload of hookers to Alaska. ICBMs are designed for NUCLEAR WARHEADS! Again... '98... after the '94 agreement and BEFORE BUSH. McCain was right on the mark today. No more blaming Bush and protecting the Clinton "legacy" on North Korea. McCain's thoughts on the '94 "deal" are well documented... soon after it was signed. Clinton/Carter's incompetence has cost us dearly. Who knows... ultimately it may end up costing millions of lives. Bravo Clinton. Bravo.
I hear a lot of you complaning about a draft. This would not be an issue, If we could just get more than 1% of our young MEN to step up and quit hiding behind there MOM'S and DAD'S skirts. I don't care who is to blame for North Korea, we just need to join together and fix it as one. And trust me Democrats will just give the country away!!!!!!
Having spent 12 years in Korea returning in 2003, one has to appreciate what goes on daily there between the two Korea's and the world and how we are not are war and how this delicate peace is being carried out with President Bushes leadership. President Clinton did a poor job in his policies over there as stated above, Russia was going to build a power plant and US stepped in so we would not see another communist become allies. His policies on importing beef into the S. Korean economy forced anti-american demostrations which forces most americans to limit their travels or travel in groups. Americans soldiers were kidnapped by extreme university groups wanting to protest. This type of news never gets on the prime time news here in the states. North Korea's constant insurgency, special forces subs, naval battles with S.Korea and air forces constantly intruding water and air space has shown that what President Bush has done has prevented the war from starting up again. In 1994, when Clinton was in office, we almost went to war with N. Korea, a little publized fact except for us who were there and were at a moments notice to go north. There has been a book written by former 7th Air Force Commander. He cut the number of troops in the military, so now we are suffering for his decision and poor vision. So, when I hear press reports that have very little or no substance, and politicians who do not know the facts or not willing to go public with actual facts, or simply looking at a political gain, I cannot value what is said. One needs to be there, know the facts first hand, and allow the public to make their own opinion. Not to take out of context and note policies from all governments and to put names to everyone who supported them both democratics and republicans and independents, other government officials by name, and maybe the press needs to start to tell their sources and if they are wrong to go to court and get punished for eronious reporting. Anyone else who lies can get go to jail. There has been a movement in S. Korea to one day join the two Koreas together. Note the recent Olympics using one flag when marching in the opening ceremony. Or the reunions that have been held in both North and South for the families that were separated during the war (brothers, sisters, mothers, children) have seen each other for the first time in years and most likely the last. Yes the leader of North Korea is extreme, and what he did has put the world in a different light, just like the cuban missle crisis and 9/11. But for us who have been there to see his extremeness, this was not a shock, but rather when it was going to happen. Everyone has talked about N. Korea having nuclear bombs and not really believed it, now we all do...welcome to reality. As I walked into the office today, many of my co-workers had numerous questions on the Korea's and the life style, etc knowing I had spent many years there. I feel the public is tired of having to hear the politics from the democratics who to me are always whining because they do not hold the majority. That is the will of people who elect our congress. Democrats for a while have done there best to under cut congressional business and efficiently running this government. And once again they are doing it. It seems to me that I do not see a democratic standing up to give their plan based on actual intellengence receive...just rederic. I saw a c-span program with the former Ambassadors to S. Korea...they know what is going on and seem in principle follow what President Bush is doing.
I agree with many of the sentiments expressed above. I am really getting sick and tired of John McCain. He is just another old warhorse that is out of touch with reality and would push this nation farther toward the brinkof WW III. ENOUGH of all this military build-up rhetoric. What about some good old fashioned diplomacy??? I don't think most die hard Republicans really understand the power and potential of diplomacy.
Think we have problems now? If Billary and the rest of the no name Democrats gain control of the House and Senate we will travel down that well known tributary, sideways, without a paddle.
Bill Clinton was one of the worst presidents ever...this according to hsitorians who consistently vote him near the bottom (alongside of Nixon). He was a liar , purjurer (on vidoetape, no less)and we are still paying the price for him not gettin Bin Laden when he had the chance. Too many cigars in the oval office at the time, probably. McCain will beat Hilary like a drum...and not only that...when the Democrats fail to win the house this year (or win it by 1 or 2 measly seats), he will lead the republicans back to the strong majority that they rightly hold here in the the grand USA! Liberals can be content to watching that idiot Jon Stewart for their politics...that is about as close as they will get to power anyway.
NUCLEAR as in the end of our civilized world. From day one Bush has treated this office like he is working for Daddy as he has done all of his life. He and Cheney have their little club that is getting smaller and smaller and we need to get them out before they screw this one up. I wish the republicans would stop arguing and just look at the lies that have happened since day one. If clintion had lied this much he would have been thrown out of office. He lied about having sex in the white house. Thats it!!! He also was able and willing ot talk to the enemy. Bush better learn that quick or we are all screwed. Republicans and Democrats alike!!! McCain was teatrering on loosing my vote when he became Bushes Minnie Me during the presdidential race. Now he's showing years of torture really left the same guy not a guy who really wants better world at any cost, just another politician!
I wonder...is there disco in heaven? And if there is, will I be albe to get in that one?
It's the Dems and Clinton? How about the Republicans and Rumsfeld. His tenure on the board of Directors of ABB from 1990-2001 while they sold Light Water Nuclear reactors to North Korea can be viewed here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/korea/article/0,2763,952289,00.html
WOw eight years of hate and still going stong!! Keep it up Rove is livin lavita loca!!
Ridiculous, Brian! If you will do your research (which you obviously have not done) you will find that it was Bill Clinton (a ral Dumbocrat) that negotiated the agreement with N Korea that allowed this to happen.
I lost all respect for John McCain when he stood up for Bush at the '04 RNC in New York...in his speech for Bush, he sounded like a 15 year-old cheerleader gushing about her BMOC boyfriend, the quarterback for the high school team. I used to like McCain, even though I am a liberal. He made sense. Now he acts like someone has stolen his brain. (AND his heart!) Shame on you, John McCain, SHAME ON YOU!!!
Liberals....all proclaimed above...GET OVER YOURSELVES! I can't even imagine Billary, Harry or Frenchie, trying to deal with S. Korea, let alone Nuclear Weapons. You people need to lose the hate, then flush and start over. P.S. you might want to turn on the news and see/hear there's something more important that Foley going on. Just a suggestion

I have been a lifelong Republican, but my fellow Republicans in office seem to think that threatening threateners is the way to calm situations. I used to think John McCain had some sense, now I believe he has chosen to play politics and is unfortunately playing to a position that people are now moving away from. Beign firm and talking "tough" has a place, but when you place people on the defensive, they are going to want the same weapons we have to defend themselves the same way we defend ourselves and when we label nations as "evil" in an axis of evil, what would we expect them to do, lay down and roll over because we're their masters? The more we push, the more these nations are going to want weapons to defend themselves from us or to use as we use them in bargaining. A "balance of power" may actually be what this world needs. If we don't blow ourselves up, we might just realize how dangerous it is for all of us to have such weapons available to all who possess them, including us. We don't seem to realize we're like a policeman with a smoking habit who continues puffing on a cigarette as he writes a ticket to fine someone for smoking in a non-smoking zone.
Republicans say: Tastes better. But the Democrats say: Less Filling. Ladies and Gentleman, We give you the new John McCain: BUSH LIGHT: rebottled with half the brains.
How can anyone believe that the Clinton policy worked when the North Koreans secretly continued their nuclear weapons program under the eyes of the weapons inspector. While Mad. Albright was standing and smiling with that butcher and millions died starving and hundreds of thousands suffer in concentration camps. Are people really that ignorant and stupid to think that Kim Jung Il is to be trusted? It's a shame and pity that many ignore the misery and death in North Korea under one of the most brutal regimes in the world. History repeats its self again. Hitler did it the idiots pacified him just as they do now. Clinton, Kerry, Gore, Dean, scares me. Their ignorance and indifference has killed millions and will continue to do so. Remember, Rwanda.
what really isn't funny is thinking that the Democrats would be in power again... I haven't heard one think from any democrat in the last 3 or 4 years that I haven't heard before.. its the same old tired arguments and slander.. its old really!! and none of your arguments hold any water to me. I hear plenty of it.... I live in OR. Dems really think that they have it all figured out... how to deal with Iraq... ok we have that example all ready (vietnam) I challenge you to look up the daily death rate for vietnam and compare it to Iraq today... even better what is the daily murder rate in one of our major cities and compare it to the American deaths in Iraq?? there are more people that died of the flu last year than American deaths in Iraq. there isn't one Rep. out there that "likes" war... if you think there is you are living in a fantasy world... do you think that if we stop fighting terror that they will stop attacking us... do you understand that they are raised to hate the west and want to kill you?? don't you understand that?? what do they want most?? to remove Israell from the map... their ideas about the Jewish community look a lot like someone elses that stands out in history... reminds me of Hitlers "final solution to the Jewish question" wake up people you really can't afford to walk through this life blind
McCain used to be the only republican I could stand now there are none. How could he possibly forget it was the guy that cut his throat in 1999(W) that shut North Korea out of talking after Clinton worked so hard to at least have some sort of dialog with them.
What has happened here, guys? Have we truly become a country of angry, hotheaded people who spend their time typing criticism on computers all day? Turn the computer off and get out and make a difference in the world. Run for office or campaign for your favorite candidate or write your Congressman/Congresswoman, but, for the love of Pete, get off your butts and MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!! I sense that many of you have too much pent up anger and probably need some exercise.
SEEMS LIKE YOU'RE ALL NOTHING BUT LIBERAL TOOLS!!! I AM CONTENT TO NEVER HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH MSNBC AGAIN!!! WHY DON'T YOU PUT ANY OF THE OBJECTIVE VIEWS TO THE LEFT? BECAUSE THE TRUTH IS A TERRIBLE THING TO BE FACED WITH AND LIBERALS WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TRUTH. ONLY THEIR VERSION OF THE TRUTH. I'M SURE I'M WASTING MY TIME EVEN WRITING THIS...YOU TOOLS WON'T POST THIS ANYWAY!!!
To Mitch in Phoenix: You are right-on. If they try to reinstate the draft, the Bush sisters should be numers one and two on the call list.
I don't like John McCain. I didn't like Hillary either, but of the two, Hillary makes better sense. McCain is trying to attract attention for 2008 and it doesn't matter if it hurts the American people as long as he gets support from King Bush. McCain, you just lost my vote!!
Richardson is the last person we want dealing with North Korea. Despite his diplomatic history, his recent activities in New Mexico (particularly the raid on the state's permanent fund) are political maneuvering of the worst sort. For those unfamiliar with Richardson's antics, he authorized significant expenditures during his term, by drawing money from the land grant fund at 5.8% rather than the 5% established by the state constitution. As a result, the principal (and therefore the interest generated) that the state relied on to generate income that funds everything from education to infrastructure will be falling over the course of his term. In a brilliant and destructive political move, he simultaneously managed to "compromise" by requiring that the original rate be re-instituted at the end of his term. As a result, his successor will be obligated to keep up with Richardson's new policies while drawing a smaller percentage of income from a reduced principal balance. Of course, many of the projects that the money has been spent on bear his name, so it's all in a good cause...
All this talk is just that. Peoples "perceptions" of what they think happened are amazing considering we have noit idea of the reality or complexity of the lintons shift, and our dear Ms. Madeline Albright whew there's a winner, talked about failed , proven on record this is the result of it policy. Must ask all, previous 9/11 everyone belived Iraq had the weapons, yup even all the libs. Are we sure we know what N korea is doing?? MMMMmmmm you libs are all so smart. I f Bush had come out and said N Korea had or was building these weapons and needed totake action, ala Iraq you would have cursed him as a war monger, and a tyrant!! Who do you think you people are kidding!! The dems can los ground and and an election gaster and better than the New York Yankees!!!
Thank you citizens of United States for re-elected Mr. BUSH! "I think my 6 years old son can do better job the BUSH Administration" I Guarantee!
Hello everyone when will you wake up and figure out that Bush has had to clean up the American repution after Clinton and all his screwing around and womanizing. Clinton also had a chance to kill Binladen and didn't after the first trade center bombing. So who is having to clean that up. McCain has stood beside the only President that had enough courge to stand up aginst all odds and the poles and make them pay for their actions.
Must be that the Democrats are the only ones with an opinion when Republicans are in office - too bad they're so far afield of reality. You think you can talk these guys into submission? I have yet to hear one liberal offer up an acceptable response to terrorists of any stripe. All the whining about what President Bush is doing with no solution of their own. Where were the liberals when our embassies were attacked? What solution did they bring to the table to deal with meniacal dictators around the globe during the 90's? Why do they complain about how we treat these terrorists when they so fully endorse the killing of unborn children, effecting the worst kind of terrorism in the history of the world on those who are totally defenseless? Talk about confused, take a look in the mirror liberals, you're the problem as you complain over everything yet offer no hopeful alternatives to anything. Reminds me of when John Kerry ran for the Presidency, all talk and no action.
It is my hope and prayer that enough people are using enough of their forebrain to see the Joseph Gerbles like propaganda this administration, their cronies in congress and their propaganda arm (Fox News) have been spinning since 9/11. For those who aren't sure who Joe Gerbles is.....he was the propaganda minister for Adolf Hitler. Anybody heard of him?
Just once Id like to see all these folks stand up for what they really mean , right or wrong ! Goldwater did He didnt get elected but He said what he meant ,Im sure he could at least look in the mirror every nite before he went to bed
Yeah, Lets get the Dems back in power so we stick our heads back the sand again and pretend everything is hunky dory like we did in the 90s.
Bravo to Bill C. from NY. I have never been one of McCain's backers either but after seeing how bad he upset all of these Clinton backers I just developed more respect for him. You can not negotiate with terrorist. Remember that we the WORLD citizens did not start this war that our world is in, the terrorist did. It is just a shame that the rest of the world would rather let the USA and Britain fight it for them.
