From NBC's Elizabeth Wilner
Former Sen. John Edwards (D) told NBC's Matt Lauer on TODAY this morning that he's running for president to urge people to take action to change things and make the country better. He rejected the suggestion that his lack of foreign policy experience will be a problem, arguing that the current Administration has a wealth of foreign policy experience and it hasn't helped them figure out what to do about Iraq. And he repeated his earlier repudiation of his vote in favor of the war.

In an e-mail sent to supporters overnight, Edwards emphasized a new approach he's taking in this second attempt to win the presidency: posting video clips of himself on YouTube as he goes about his campaign in an effort to let supporters get a look at him that's unfiltered by the media. One emerging theme of Edwards' is that he spent too much time during his first campaign listening to his paid consultants tell him what to do and say, and not enough time letting people see the real him. This is evident even in Edwards' statement yesterday about the passing of President Gerald Ford: "President Ford once said, 'At times it feels as if American politics consists largely of candidates without ideas, hiring consultants without convictions, to stage campaigns without content… It doesn't have to be this way.' He was right."

It's a theme that could serve Edwards well if he has to campaign for the Democratic nomination against "real, unvarnished" Barack Obama -- and against Sen. Hillary Clinton, who seems to strike some voters as too cautious and politically calculating. From New Orleans, Edwards sets off on a series of town halls in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina.

My first feeling was relief when John Edwards made the official announcement. Here is someone no one can fault for experience, education, street-smarts, compassion, personal strength, integrity, and an EXCELLENT sense of humor! In fact, I'd like to see an Edwards-Obama ticket, which I believe would be unstoppable. Any lack of foreign policy experience can be ignored since the mess we have and have had in foreign relations can't get much worse. New ideas, a new plan, and CONCENTRATION ON THE PROBLEMS OF THIS NATION SHOULD BE FRONT AND CENTER. At all times except in cases of national emergencies. Our country in close to bankruptcy due to our "generous loans" and outright gifts to other nations. Our own people are going without and carrying debt loads that are unbearable becausse of this. There is no longer a feeling of hope and conviction that hard work will lift you out of your current circumsstances and let you have a chance to better yourself. The table has been shifted to where only the priviledged to begin with have the chance to improve their holdings. Even the CHANCE to get ahead is gone from most of America today. I intend to try to get involved any way I can in the Edwards campaign for purely selfish reasons. I would love to see the same sense of hope, challenge, opportunity, and downright JOY that pervaded this country when Kennedy was President. I haven't had a personal "president", someone I thought a lot of and respected, since JFK. I think John Edwards just might be that man.
Can he stop Hillary..that is the question. Can any Dem stop her machine w/ has "star power" + Bill. Will America view Edwards as a retread failure; linking him w/ the arrogant elitist of the East coast liberal wing of the Dem Party? Can he shake his corporate lawyer image and project wisdom, expierence and the ability to guide America along the rocky shoals of global debate?
I am an English-American humorist and broadcaster who lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, along with John Edwards. In response to his announcement to run, I have set up watch9.blospot.com , to keep a friendly but gently irreverent eye on his Campaign. This is the first post: "England has David Cameron and Notting Hill. Here in America, we have John Edwards and Chapel Hill - currently my home town in North Carolina. Both politicians affect a concern for the less fortunate. David talks of Compassionate Conservatism; John of Two Americas - the one rich, the other poor. John Edwards will shortly be announcing his candidacy for the Democratic Presidential Nomination in 2008. He will be doing so from the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, the area worst affected by Hurricane Katrina. He tells all and sundry that this is reflective of his genuine concern for the poor in society. However, what might be more reflective is where he has situated his new Campaign Headquarters: a suburban village in Chapel Hill, which I have lovingly christened the Upper Ninth. As in the houses you can buy there reach into the Upper $900K's; or the average income is in the Upper Ninth percentile of all Americans... The HQ itself occupies the upper floor of what can only be described as a luxurious faux rendition of the sort of Mediterranean villa you might find in the smarter parts of Palm Beach, Florida. The moral, I guess, is: beware politicians who affect concern for an issue, but then have a lifestyle that belies that affected concern. We have an abundance of that in Chapel Hill, where the 'progressives' tend to be what we call Merlot Democrats. There used to be an equivalent in England - the Glenda Jackson, Hampstead set of Champagne Socialists. Have they been overtaken by the Cameron, Notting Hill set of Beaujolais Tories?"
Bill's philandering may stop Hillary
At first, I thought it was too early to begin really thinking about the presidential elections of 2008. But now that I think again, it makes perfect sense. The reason Democrats were so successful in the November elections wasn't just because the Republicans seemed to need no help in tripping all over themselves, it was because the Democratic party started early and maintained its enthusiasm. I am delighted John Edwards has decided to run for the presidency. He is a direct and straightforward man who looks you square in the face when he talks with you and shakes your hand with warmth. For someone who has done well for himself in his life, he's never forgotten where he came from and it shows in his words and in his deeds. He is unmistakably human as is his wife (a positively adorable lady) and his experience and determination is only superseded by his drive to help make things better for all of us. I recently attended an event at which George Stephanopolous interviewed and talked politics with the long-serving and now-retired Sen. Paul Sarbanes and his son, the recently-elected John Sarbanes. The younger Sarbanes related a story that perfectly captures the growing gap between the American Dream and ordinary Americans efforts to grasp it. He said it was at a campaign stop that an early middle-aged woman approached him and said, "I have three children who will soon want to go to college, but I don't think I can afford to send them. My husband and I have always worked three jobs between us, we've saved, we did everything right - everything we were supposed to do and we still can't afford it. What did I do wrong?" The answer is that there isn't anything she did wrong - the system itself is broken. When the concept of going to college seems as unattainable for the average, hard-working American public as climbing Everest, the system is what's wrong. This is what I believe John Edwards sees when he talks of the two Americas. The American Dream isn't just for the wealthy. It's for all Americans and it's time we made that a reality again.
Believe it or not folks, America will not put a woman, a muslim or a black in office yet. Nothing about prejudice, and yes I will claim the status of a prophet here and if I'm wrong you can hang me with Saddam... LOL
Here goes nothing folks- I am a member of the GOP; voted that way my whole life. I beleive in less government; more in my bank account and working for a living in order to support my family. I feel that America should not become a European social state; which, in my opinion and observation; attempt to coddle and cradle one from birth to death with all sorts of enabling government sponsored programs while taxing one to death. With that said; let me continue- I do not buy the whole cloth as espoused by the RNC nor the Bush administarion. I may have believed in Iraq in 2003 but I see where the Bush group went off the map and has lost their way in the muddled politics of known as the Mid East. As a Republican- here is what I want to see in this country: a negotiated solution to Iraq that benefits us w/o setting up a terror based government in the country; more global dialouge in regards to Latin America ( Cuba, Venezuala, Mexico); Far East, Africa and the Mid East; a policy to get guns out of the hands of teenagers and felons w/o touching the Second Admendment; abortion- I am opposed but leave what is on the book alone, but give the parents of underage women some rights; same sex unions- state matters, not a federal issue, not the centerpiece of any major policy push; fix FEMA and the mutlitude of border security forces under DHS; a workable, smart plan to clean out the illegals in this country ( enforce the written laws), make companies who knowingly employ illegals pay; set up a guest worker program; spend $$$$$ to fix the waste of Katrina, Rita and wildfires areas; no more earmarks on any legislation; depose the crooked, ill begotten despots who rule in Congress and the Executive Branch; safe schools, using federal money; modify both the Patriot Act and No Child Left Behind but do not discard these tools; more training and funding for teachers, EMT, law enforcement; fire fighters; medical services; counselors; trim all the obsolete programs and agencies from the federal budget; more research for Alzheimers; lukemia; ALS, cancers of all sorts; less for cloning animals. That is but the beginning. I amy appear more moderate than the usual GOP right side; so be it. Now- whom will I select in 2008? I really do not know. I will read, listen and pick who I feel is best suited for the job! Republican- yes; party lackey, mindless drone- no. 100% supporter of GW Bush- heck no. Believer that Dems are the answer- heck no. Stuck in the middle w/ you!!
I like John Edwards, and I listened to his stump speech back in '04 a number of times. But I don't remember that he offered many specific solutions for the "Two Americas" problem that he cites. I suspect that if he outlines what actually needs to be done to support the middle class and poor people, however, he'd lose the election. Such things include imposing reasonable limits on so-called "free trade," strengthening union rights, and toughening laws on hiring of illegal aliens. It's just sad but true that, with no evidence except outdated economic theory to support it, people have been sold by Republicans on the benefits of "free trade" and vote accordingly. On the other hand, if former Sen. Edwards remains mum about what he's really going to do, that seems likely to result in defeat again too. So what's he to do? Well, I think he has to take a chance and lay it all out. But he's got his work cut out for him in trying to educate Americans about what happened to all the good jobs they once had.
GREAT NEWS!!! John should choose Hillary as a Vice Presidential running mate, maybe with Obama for Secretary of State...
Although I find Edwards quite interesting and charming, he is in a crowded field of perhaps more competitive candidates that promises to be a big challenge for anyone seeking a go at the white house.
I am very happy to have John Edwards running for president. My circle of friends and I, are huge democratic supporters. He has my vote and many of my friends. Now, if only Barack Obama becomes his running mate vice president, we will have the "Dream Team" America has been waiting for and needs so badly. Today when I watched the news and heard about his announcement for presidency, I smiled and felt hope again. Stay in the race John Edwards, and fight to win!
My first introduction to John Edwards was in the last campaign. My thoughts during that entire ordeal were - "Why isn't John Edwards running for President instead of John Kerry? Can no one in the Democratic party see that the people need a candidate they can identify with and who can connect with them?" John Kerry and Hillary Clinton are equated wealthy elitists who have no real connection to working class people. They are too far removed from people who struggle every day to put food on the table - pay bills and have nothing left over for savings - live without health care because they can't afford it. John Edwards may not now live in this world, but he still sees and understands it, I believe. I'm an independent and have always strongly resisted supporting candidates from the two majority parties, but America needs a change desperately and I think John Edwards is our best chance at that change. I intend to fully support him.
John Edwards is a criminally complicit/compromised fraud, involved in the same scamming, pillaging and destruction of the U.S. as his Republican/Bush administration counterparts. He is not trustworthy. Voting for him is no different than voting for the opposing Republican. Do not vote Republican, and do not vote Edwards.
The Former Senator is dead in the water, so to speak. Once Maureen Dowd has tagged you as the "BRECK GIRL" it's all over.
I think that John Edwards should pay his taxes that he owes and pay off his bills that are not paid from the last time that he ran, how can he tell people what he beleives in until he does these things. He would be a very bad choice for the Highest office.
Edwards-Obama!! Oh, Mama...what a team. This gives us languishing Dems a new lease on life - perhaps!! Always liked Edwards. Go Dream Team...
Thank God this country still has a way out of the mess we are in ,and that way is John Edwards and Barak Obama . New young blood and new ideas. The combination of these two on the Democratic ticket is a win win situation . It could never be worse than what we have now, nomatter who was in office, and only cared about the wealthy. There is no experience and schooling better than hands on ,which is much better than we have now.
Go John Edwards! You were the better half of the Kerry/Edwards team in my opinion back in 2004. It is hard to believe we need to get a Democrat back in office to have some fiscal responsibility in the white house again. I will vote for you.
Geoff. Oh yeah? We're building Tom Vilsack a Log Cabin AND a Sod Dugout, just outside of Sioux Center. With a split-rail fence and NO electricity. We call it the Zero-K neighborhood. We call the style NeoPaleolithic, the newest thing in Iowa.
John Edwards is as honorable a man as there is on the political front today. He devoted his professional life to ensuring that working families didn't get stiffed by insurance companies or employers, and he knows what it's like to come from a hard working blue collar background. Better to have someone like that, as opposed to the current "silver foot in mouth" jerk who currently occupies the white house. We could do, have done much worse for representation at the executive level than John Edwards. Good luck to you sir. You aren't my first choice but if you get the nomination you will get my vote.
John Edwards is a good candidate; can he win? One of the worst things the Republicans have fostered has been tort reform and lowering the funding for the poor to fight civil and criminal cases. I am not a lawyer and I know plenty of lawyer jokes, however, I feel if the saying, "do the crime, do the time" is accurate for criminal trials, corporations and organizations should be punished severely for malfeasance. The problem is these corporations have the politicians and the misinformed public on their side when it comes to tort reform, and the poor are left at the mercy of judicial benevolence and trial lawyers like John Edwards to stand up for them. Over the past twenty years, since the Raegan era began, access to our legal system has been limited, many unions have been busted, our Constitutional rights abridged, and our tax dollars spent (on war, tax cuts and reform, and no-bid contracts) to support those who already have more money than they will ever spend. I know conservatives believe only the good, hard-working, native-born Americans deserve the fruits of the American Dream, but, what isn't told are the people who have done evrything right and still have nothing to show for it. Those are the people who I want our leaders to stand up for. If John Edwards can say there are two Americas and actually come up with some substantive ideas to eradicate the problem, he has my vote. Personally, I am tired of self-serving, fundamentalist pandering, moral hypocritical politicians running this country. Problem is, we still vote for them. Could this mean that we believe in equality until we are promised it is only right for ourselves, and everone else be damned? I am beginning to wonder.
Folks- before we put our feet in our throats- does Edwards owe from 2004? Does he have monies squandered, hidden away? Before he preaches to the masses, let him come clean before us all with 2004 campaign money issues. Show us before trying to lead us. Is your cloak as white as snow; or are the stains hidden from view? Oh speak to us Mr Edwards...
John Edwards just might be what this country needs! He bring quite a bit of freshness to our stale political arena. I do not believe the American people will put a woman nor a minority in office. But, a lot of people will cross-over party lines for Edwards!
TO TYRONE ELLINGTON of DALLAS TX; I have to laugh at your post, which, I guess is supposed to describe the kind of platform and Presidential Candidate you want in 2008. You talk about "coddling" people with "entitlements from cradle to grave," and paying for it by taxing others to death. (That whole "schpeel" is part of the Rush Limbaugh "mantra' by the way, which tells me exactly where you're coming from.) Interestingly enough, you mention NOTHING about CORPORATE ENTITLEMENTS that cost the taxpayers of this country BILLIONS more annually, than the $20.00 worth of weekly food assistance that a single working mother of two might get if she's lucky. All one needs to do is look at Enron, World-Com, and Tyco if you want to know where that money ends up. I'm not going to go on too long here because the "instructions" say not to attack the comments of others. So I won't attack you. But, I would ask respectfully that you not distort the facts with CANTservative rhetoric. Your arrogant, eliteist, southern republiCANTS certainly have not "gotten it done" these last few years. If you think they have, take a good long look at the national crime statistics just since Bush took office. GO DEMOCRATS! Take the country BACK, and BRING IT HOME IN '08'!!!!!!!!
Unless Al Gore gets in the race, which seems increasingly unlikely, John Edwards is my candidate. Like others who have posted here, I think an Edwards-Obama ticket would be ideal. Edwards is the one hope this country has to protect and rebuild the middle class. He understands that the way to do that is to unfetter the union movement. While pundits and the right wing will scoff and ridicule him for openly aligning with Labor, the fact is that the vast majority of American workers would join a union if they were allowed to do so. I thank Mr. Edwards for his courage in openly embracing unions. I hope and expect that Labor will return the favor. Finally, for those who assume that Senator Clinton is the inevitable nominee, I suggest that money and name identification isn't enough. A candidate has to excite passion. Triangulation will just not get it done this time. I believe voters want to look to the future, not the past. She is a great Senator. I hope she stays in the Senate for many years; in fact, she would be a great partner for the Edwards-Obama administration as Senate ajority Leader .
i see the swift boaters are after edwards already that just means they fear him so the lieing smears start .
John Edwards, I hope you could count with Latino Vote that it is growing this country. I Hope I could see you win the next election. You are a good man who really care about the poor people of this country.
This is a dream come true.Alas,we have real guy to look up to in the next elections. Bravo John.Get the nomination and you get my vote, simple.
I think that John Edwards is the man we need to help run a great nation, but I also think that the people need proof that he is going to do all the things he says he will do.
Although it may still be 2006, candidates such as John Edward's need 2 be outfront of the Hillary machine. This is probably the reason for announcing so early. Once the Hillary machine start's up, it's going 2 be hard 2 stop. Now that the American Voter has awakened from their ( Koolaid Induced Coma) I don't think it's Remotely possible 4 Hillary 2 be Elected President. Edward's/ Obama may be the Ticket 4 the Democrat's. With that being said, a New Direction is needed 4 our beloved USA. New faces, new idea's ( Not the same old Father know's best) direction. I don't know if Edward's can capture people,( like Obama can), but Both of them together, sure seem's very Appealing. The Democratic primaries will be very interesting 2 say the least
I really believe this is the BEST NEWS I have heard in years ! John Edwards running for President, this is GREAT and of all days to miss "THE TODAY SHOW".. I will find a replay on the internet. All I can say is: "GOD BLESS AMERICA, because there certainly is two AMERICA'S. Rich and Poor! Everyone should have affordable health insurance and I feel all things are possible with the right person in office. I am a Democrat and proud of it, my dad was always a hard worker and didn't make the best of money, but he sure provided for his family. I always say we had what we needed, not everything we wanted but we had love which doesn't cost a dime. I am a true believer that John Edwards can and will make a difference for all the people, poor, homeless, jobs, the whole economy will be much brighter. Mr. Edwards you definitely have 2 votes and I promise you many more from friends and family. This is the way it should have been the last time, you number #1 on the ticket. It will be GREAT in 2008 when JOHN EDWARDS is president of the UNITED STATES!
Ten years ago I attended my sons graduation. As the valedictorian gave her speech I was dumbfounded as she spoke of the same heroes that were used at my graduation some 25 years earlier. When I graduated John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and Neil Armstrong were still relevent to our times. It is a sad state that our country has not produced any great leaders that our young people can look up to since 1970. I see in John Edwards and Barack Obama a return to great visionary leadership for the common people of this great country. I too felt that the wrong man was leading the ticket for the democrats in 04, and have been hoping ever since that Senator Edwards would once again seek his parties nomination. Be assured that I will be working non-stop for the next two years to do everything possible to return dignaty and leadership to the white house.
A word about Edwards' electability, compared to Clinton and Obama. Edwards has always been leading the polls in Iowa, where people know Edwards personally and connected with him during the 2004 campaign. In October, he had a big lead, which has since becoming only a marginal lead, thanks to all the attention being paid to Clinton and Obama. But the interesting thing here is not that Edwards lead has shrunk, but that Clinton hasn't gained any ground at all. The race in Iowa is now a two-man race between Edwards and Obama, and seems likely to stay that way, given Clinton's cold and aloof demeanor, which may play well in New England but isn't going to work anywhere else, no matter how much money she spends. As for Obama, he is a real challenge. But if Edwards--who is brilliant on policy and very substantive, if you're willing to dig a little beyond the stump speech--is perceived to have a problem with depth, Obama has problems with depth up to his ears. He hasn't laid out a specific plan for anything. He mainly just talks about hope and optimism, and that's fine, but he'll need to change that if he wants to remain a serious challenger to someone as emininently qualified as Senator Edwards.
Let's not forget that while John Edwards may live in an expensive area, have offices in "swanky" buildings, he grew up in a much more modest situation in Robbins, NC with a father who was a mill worker. He worked his way from there to where he is now. Nothing was ever handed to him, and that was in no way easy to do. He is an extremely intelligent, successful, motivated man, who knows it is possible to rise above, and will serve as a wonderful motivation and role model to not only the youth of today, but to anyone with an inkling of a dream. He signifies the American Dream. With all this country has been through in the past several years, we definitely need a leader who is tuned into what we all know is now wrong with our country, who knows how to overcome obstacles with a relentless passion, who genuinely knows failure is not an option, and who will motivate us all to bring America back to what it was and will be again. He is absolutely correct in his statement that government and politicians will not be able to repair our current state alone. It will take a strong leader, who knows what's going on in all levels of America, both inside and outside our borders to lead all of us to fix our country together. After all, that is the job of the president...to lead the country in the direction that it should go, to make us all strong and a part of the building of our country, not to take over and make us just bystanders watching it all fall apart, as we have been at the hands of current leaders who seem to have forgotten that the citizens exist, much less asking for any input, or listening when input is given. I listened carefully to what John Edwards had to say this morning. I was very motivated by the fact that I could tell he had paid attention. He knows exactly what the problems are. He knows and has lived in all economic levels. He wants all of the citizens of America to come together to work to become a strong, proud, respectable nation, and as he put it this morning "To regain our status as the stabilizing force of the world". I realized when he said this, that it is absolutely true. If America loses it's footing, and continues in the downward spiral I have had to sit back and witness in the past few years, what will become of us and the rest of the world? I look forward to having John Edwards as our President. He has plans, ideas, a strong will to succeed, and he's ready to go to work. I encourage everyone to help John become our new leader.
At least with Edwards the GOP will have to field some real choices, and not just GOP lickspittles like (I hate to say this, I really do) John McCain. I'm sorry the BushCo machine has corrupted John, but it has, and NOTHING with the stain of BushCo should EVER be in Washington DC, EVER again. (I laugh at anyone who says he lacks foreign policy experience - it's only been in the last couple years Bush could find Iraq or Afgahnistan on a map.)
dubya will hand the white house to the dems ( no matter who is nominated ) as he continues to seek his "victory". therefore it is important that the voters in every primary forget the usual beauty contest mentality and gravitate towards the best and brightest candidate. who will lead this great country out of the wilderness? oh mama, it's obama!
OH BOY, ANOTHER JIMMY CARTER YEP THAT'S WHAT WE NEED.HIP HIP HOORAY.WE DON'T NEED ANOTHER SOFT/WHINEY/FEEL GOOD PRESIDENT.FIND SOMEONE TOUGH AND WILLING TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT NOT WHAT MAKES PEOPLE FEEL GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!
I too will do everything I can to get this wonderful man elected...It is time. We need a healer now. Strange, that he comes along just when we need someone like him to bring our country back from the abyss of the last eight years. He will be a true, honest, moral and experienced leader... with many years of experience as a Senator. In addition, he is very intelligent; one Scmaaaart cookie.
Wow. We Dems finally have a canidate we can get behind. I truly believe if Mr Edwards can get the nomination he will take the White House. Go John Go.
In Canada we are all excited to hear that John Edwards has declared to vie for the White House. Were Canadians allowed to vote in USA John would surely win hands down. This man connects with common folks. He lost his son and moved on just like the rest of us. He has a young family, his wife looks warm and motherly, and john knew poverty in his youth. This man elicits deep connectivity just like the way the world felt when JF Kennedy run for presidency. Go for it all the way to the White House. John is going to make history in America and the whole world. Pick MR Barrack Obama as your running mate and all Afro/Latino votes will all be yours.America is ready for a Black VP.Make it happen. Canada supports Edwards/Obama Ticket 2008 God Bless America.
I am pleased that John Edwards is running for President in 2008. He has my vote!
Yeah!!!!!!!! Finally a canidate who cares!!!!!! You have my support and vote!!!!!! Will be glad to get this man in the White House!!!! The next "healer"!!!
Being from Illinois, I am a huge supporter of Obama, but an Edwards/Obama ticket would certainly put a smile on my face. Neither was born with a silver spoon; both are intelligent, hard working and speak of America with hope - and I'd certainly prefer to live my life with hope and not the "fear" that has been the mantra of the current administration. It is also that hope that makes me believe that Americans CAN elect Obama. Edwards/Obama or Obama/Edwards, either way, American wins.

My fellow Americans: As I read all these posts by those of you , like me, not elected to office, I wonder why we allow ourselves to bash and destroy others on these blogs? Each is allowed to opinion, position and beleif, but some on here acts as demagouges whose opinions are expert and all other minions and morons. What gives any American the right to destroy others here on these websites, acting as thouogh you are the best and brightests and all others are kindergarten dropouts? I see a disturbing vein of hate and slander here in this cyberroom and it truly disturbs me. I ponder to wonder how many of you bloggers are filled with vitrol, venom and hate and would, if pushed move words to acts of violence against someone who does not tilt in the direction of your self styled weather vane of political acumen. Gladly, for most of us, many of those who write here are too enabled by their own fears to actually act out anything, such as spoeaking out in a public forum or even running for some public office. Still, as an American, I am appalled at the many on here who continue to degrade and demoralize others by the blogged word. There will never be a poltical time in this country in which all spectrums of the walks of life will fully agree. But, to malign and slander with so little accountability and responsibility..this reminds of me of Goebbels and his Nazi progoganda machine, that was protected by the Furher. Only here, hateful bloggers who demean and blast others for opinions not to thier liking hide behind keyboard and screen, like a bully who hides behind thier mother's skirt, Eddie Haskell- like, taunting while trying to screen the returns.
John Edwards had his chance in 2004 and couldn't carry a single southern state which he promised to do. He couldn't even win his home state of North Carolina losing it to Bush with over 60% of the state. If he would HAVE staied a senator from North Carolina then maybe he would have had a chance in 2008, but he did not. My choice for 2008 would be Senator Hillary Clinton from New York. She has done so much for new York and she would continue to do that as President. She is the only candidate in this race who can raise money the GOP can only wish of. She can also win purple states like West Virgina, OHio, Iowa, New Mexico, and Colorado. Visit votehillary.org
My question is this, what did John Edwards do for North Carolina while he was our representative. We all have a story, his is not better or worse than anyone else's. I'm from NC and wouldn't vote for him if he was my neighbor. It's easy to get caught up in what the "sense" of the man may be, we need a strong, proven leader to get us out of this hole. I'm sure this is a good guy, but has proven nothing in the leadership/law making role. He made his money on a few lawsuits that although tragic, had nothing to do with policy that will change the direction of this country. Don't be fooled by the "looks", check out the record, it's public, it's online, and it's not impressive.
I am happy to see a neutral candidate. A candidate that can offer a pleasant transition from our current breakdown. I hope that the Dems can mend our ravaged reputation throughout the world... one that Bush ripped apart selfishly for his own gain (like a child with candy). Edwards and Obama '08!
Edwards, Yes! Because he is the candidate who can win. Winning for the Dems is what counts now. If a Republican is elected all the gains we made in 2006 will be in vain. The Democrats must wake up and realize that trying to prove how PC we are by nominating a woman or minority candidate is not the way to go. We have to do more than attract the Party Faithful--they would vote for anyone the Democrats nominate. We need a candidate that can pull in Independents, disenchanted Republicans, and rouse the apathetic to get up an vote. Edwards has it all going for him: First, the proper progressive adgenda, and that's what really counts. But--and this is what really wins elections whether we like it or not--he is a white male, from the South, handsome, articulate, and oozing charisma from every pore. That's what it will take to win in 2008. He must not make the mistake of choosing Obama or Hillary as running mates. There is still too much prejudice in this country to take the chance that a woman or minority could kill the ticket. He needs a strong, respected, non-controversial Democrat to balance the ticket--someone as likeable as himself. The Republicans are not going to sit back. They will nominate the strongest candidate they can find--a McCain or Guiliani. Neither Hillary or Obama could beat those guys. Only someone like Edwards can do it. Let's get with it and support a winner who can inspire and get this country back in balance and restroe our democracy.
Let's hope that this time people will use their heads and vote for the most intelligent, charismatic candidate. I could never understand how Kerry jumped into the lead in 2004. In John Edwards, we have a candidate who can speak without reading notes or speeches, figure things out for himself without having to depend on aides or outside consultants, and for those who insist on making the run for the presidency a popularity contest - he has the charisma to attract a large number of people. Go Edwards, and don't be mislead into thinking that you need Obama or Clinton as your vp choice to win.
