In his luncheon speech at the National Press Club yesterday, GOP Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger emphasized bipartisanship while still making it clear that he has not become an Independent, NBC's Lauren Appelbaum reports.  "I am still a proud Republican," he said.  "I support the guiding principles of the Republican Party."  He continued, "Isn't the ultimate principle to serve the people, to do the things that are good for the people?  We are elected as public servants, not party servants."

Schwarzenegger focused on the issues of health care and immigration, calling for mandatory medical insurance for everyone.  And while he recognized that some consider it controversial, he also called for coverage of children of undocumented immigrants: "The fact is that we have no choice about paying the medical bills of people that are here illegally in California...  So the question really is not, should we treat them or not or should we cover them or not, but the real question is do we treat them in an emergency room at three or four times the cost of a doctor's office or health clinic, or do we treat them more efficiently and more cost-effectively?"

On immigration, he recognized the positions of extremes: sending all illegal immigrants back and building a fence, versus giving everyone amnesty, to which he replied: "I have an idea.  What about being realistic and just actually solving the problem?"  His solution?  "Secure our borders while at the same time recognize economic and social reality by providing guest-worker programs and giving everyone citizenship who is already in the country and meet a certain criteria."

The Washington Times: "Mr. Schwarzenegger's proposal, while not original, is part of his carefully crafted message of 'post-partisanship' that appears aimed at a national audience."

"The mistake people make about [Schwarzenegger] is to assume that he must be at least somewhat embarrassed about his past careers," writes The Politico's Simon.  "They think he must cringe just a little bit when reminded of how he wore tiny Speedos and lifted weights or played Conan the Barbarian in long hair and leather…  In reality, however, Schwarzenegger is completely unabashed about his former professions.  They do not embarrass him in the least."

The New York Times front-pages that the White House and the governors were at odds yesterday over the future of the popular Children’s Health Insurance Program, which states have used to expand health coverage.

We are elected as public servants, not party servants. This quote could not be more true. I wish every public servant remembered this.
As an Independent, I can confirm Ahnold's statement that he's not an Independent. He is far too beholding to the Democrats and Republicans, to be an Independent.
Maybe we should have this quote tatooed or somehow imprinted on the foreheads of all public officials. Do you think they would remember it then?
Maybe Arnold needs to sit down with our president and explain his thinking to the president. I'm referring to the statement of Arnold's "Isn't the ultimate principle to serve the people, to do the things that are good for the people? We are elected as public servants, not party servants." Arnold probably should have expanded just a little bit on which people (the majority of the people in the United States and not just the upper 1% or the extreme right wing). I'm a middle of the road type of person and right now don't feel that anybody is representing me or even thinking about me.
To serve the people, to work for the good of the people, what a radical idea. Obviously not on the repub or bush/cheney agenda.
Did jesus check ID cards before feeding the hungry????
Dawn...the quote tattoed on their foreheads wouldn't do any good; tattoo it on thes asses of the lobbyists so the pols would see the tattoo every time they kissed it.
Jesus did not ask for ID cards and he would have have fed the hungry and told them to repent their sins for they are doing something ILLEGAL and then he would escort them back across the border. Hey just like our Border Patrol people. Only the Mexicans would sin yet again and cross back over...guess who's going to Purgatory.
jt NE...your idea is much better than mine. How about both places? At least that way, the common person would also know who was a public servant and could ask that person "What have you done today that will benefit me and all the other common people that elected you to your position as a public servant?"
Didn't they just find the stone coffin that held the body of "Hay-soos"?
"...ask not, what your country can do for you,..ask...uh..what your country can do for me." -Dubya
I think it is rediculous to pay for ileagle aliens health when we can't even take care of Americans. Haul them back across the border and let mexico take care of them. Or they can put it on their bank of america credit card. Get Real
I believe that we can solve many problems here in America by impeaching Bush and Cheney, the two morons who have created the problems. And then make a long list of corrupt Republican neo-cons or neo-con supporters to vote out of office in '08'. Perhaps we may even tempt Gov. Schwarzenegger to run for Senator. I think, for a Republican, he has his head on straight; unlike the neo-con morons of the present.
Les. Ahnold has Her head on straight. The Real Barbarian in that family is Mrs. Terminator. After all, Ahnold originated the common use of the term, "High Maintenance", for her. They have their own Party.
