Gonzales under fire

Kyle Sampson, Alberto Gonzales’ former chief of staff, voluntarily testifies today before the Senate Judiciary Committee. NBC’s Ken Strickland says that Sampson may hold the keys to two critical questions in the fired prosecutors controversy: 1) what and when did Gonzales and the White House know about to plan to dismiss the US attorneys; and 2) were the firings politically motivated?

NBC’s Pete Williams has a copy of Sampson’s prepared remarks. In them, Sampson says none of the fired US attorneys was replaced "for an improper reason," and says that includes any "effort to interfere with or influence the investigation or prosecution of a particular case for political or partisan advantage." Sampson adds that he compiled the list of those to be fired by asking senior political and career officials at the Justice Department about who should be moved out. As for judging their performance, he says politics counted in one sense: He believed that a US attorney should be a good leader, work well with local federal agents, and follow department policy. For that reason, he says, "the distinction between 'political' and 'performance-related' reasons for removing a US attorney ... is largely artificial."

Sampson will also say that the Justice Department "badly mishandled" its response to questions about what happened "through an unfortunate combination of poor judgments, poor word choices, and poor communication," for which he blames himself. Finally, his prepared testimony shows a tone his internal e-mails did not -- of respect for the US attorneys who were fired, calling them "good people who served our country honorably."

Not only does Gonzales have problem garnering support from congressional Republicans, he's struggling with rank-and-file Justice Department folks, including current US attorneys. The New York Times writes that some of these attorneys leveled complaints at Gonzales earlier this week during a meeting in Chicago organized by -- wait for it -- Patrick Fitzgerald (or “Peter” Fitzgerald, as Rove likes to call him).

Another New York Times article reports on emails that tie “M.C.” Karl Rove -- fresh off of his rap performance at last night’s Radio-TV Correspondents’ dinner -- even closer to the controversial US attorney firings in Arkansas and New Mexico.

I have but one life to give for my President- Kyle Sampson
"Patrick Fitzgerald(or "Peter" Fitzgerald, as Rove likes to call him). Wish Rove knew what I like to call him, i.e.... "Dickeye"-(Jerry Cantrell)
The difference between a 'Psychotic' President, and a 'Dysfunctional' President, is largely artificial.
An independent judiciary is mutually exclusive to the claim Mr. Sampson makes that political performance is part of a prosecuters job. This is truly an unbelievable statement whether it came from a republican or a democrat or an independent. If this is what is being taught to our young up and coming leaders of today, our republic is in deep doo-doo

"Walkin' After Midnight"--Patsy Cline. Or "Walkin to New Orleans...." Maybe walkin' to New Orleans after midnight....
Now I see why SC dropped to 50th and GA became 49th in public school rankings.
I had no idea the government serves no purpose other than to further the agenda of the party in power. Silly me, I thought fair, stable and effective government was an integral part of any functioning society.
If firing U.S. Prosecuters was as business as usual in the White House as it appears, can you imagine the things Rove has done that he realized he had to actually cover up?
I think Kyle Sampson is really Karl Roves twin brother.
LOL, flat-earther. Now That's Funny, I don't care who you are.
as pelosi is twin sister to phyllis diller
If there is no problem in the DOJ for the administration, why did the republicans just halt the hearing where Sampson was testifing? Let's think for a moment, one senior aid taking the fifth, one former aid testomony now halted, Rove and others refusing to testify openly and under oath, smoke? fire? Hmmm, wonder what they have to hide?
If South Carolina wants to secede again, I say "don't let the door hit your behind on the way out." First in secession, last in education. Some motto.
Gee John B, I thought just like you. What a surprise to find out that we're either left or right, repub or dem. I just thought we were all Americans like you did. Guess we have a lot to learn. Thank you Kyle Sampson for your 32 year old political logic. Really straightened me and John B out.

Not twins. Kyle is clone made in Area 51. You know that is where feds make morons. Very secret project.
"Woes me! Woes me!" "The conspiracy doeseth strike deepeth in us" "Pull this dagger from our evil hearts" "The righteous hasth cometh to vanquish us" "Woes me! Woes me!"
Mr. Sampson presents himself as contrite at 10:32am this morning before the Senate Judiciary Committee. He opens reminding the committee of his dedication to public service....
Purgery?
Purgery... isn't that what Bush did to those US Attorneys? He Purged them, so therefore he committed Purgery. =)
One can figuratively see the knives flashing at the hearing today.....any bets on how long before the AG is asked to clear his office? After today, any bets Albeto survives long enough to testify before Congress in April? Just wondering
Well, I took the time to watch todays hearing totally. While I personally feel Mr. Sampsons memory seemed awfully convenient at times, I do feel he did as good a job as he could under the circumstances. Did he lie? I suspect he may have been less that truthful at times, perhaps to avoid incriminate others in the department, however I can only say that I suspect but do not know that as a fact. Did his testimony damage the AG, I would say yes, but again they have plenty of time for damage control before he has to testify. Did Rove play a part in any of this? My thoughts after listening to the testimony, is yes, was his part in this criminal, I don't think so with what has been discovered at this time. Was the actions of the AG's office criminal, at this point, it would not appear so, however it is too early to determine that with any degree of certainty. Is this matter important, yes, it is extremely important in that it looks as if some of the moves made were made to curtail justice being served. Is this investigation the tip of the iceberg as to what is to come? I feel that many of the actions of this administration need to be looked at with open eyes, but done with fairness to the parties involved. This should not be done as a witch hunt like was done in a previous administration, but with openness and honesty.
"Purgery"??- "Purgatory"-(Iron Maiden)
