Clinton weighs in on Imus controversy

From NBC's Mark Murray
On her campaign Web site today, Hillary Clinton comments on Don Imus' controversial statement about the Rutgers women's basketball team, and asks viewers to send a message of support to the team. Respondents have the option of signing up for campaign emails.

"Don Imus's comments about them were nothing more than small-minded bigotry and coarse sexism," she says on the Web site. "They showed a disregard for basic decency and were disrespectful and degrading to African Americans and women everywhere. Please join me in sending the young women of Rutgers a message of respect and support. Show them that we are proud to stand with them and for them."

Every once and awhile I watch the show.Imus and the guys on his show remind me of teenage boys talking foolish and TRYING to act macho. But of course we're dealing with grown men here.I think we ought to let him talk to the woman on the team and let all this embarrassment be his punishment. I'm a bit of a feminist and still don't think he should be fired. It seems like he's made a big fool out of himself already.
This is right up there with Dean setting up campaign donations in response to katrina. Consider the source of the comments. If you're happy with yourself, and not hurting others it doesn't matter what some nasty moth Liberal shock jock says about you.
I have watched Imus for years. I frequently shake my head at some of the things that come out of his mouth, not to mention other members of his staff. But I have accepted it for what it is - typical shock jock commentary. Until people are willing to call for the heads of Howard Stern and others on the radio who employ the same sort of "humor" and, more importantly to my thinking, the black comedians who use such derogatory terms on a regular basis, then it's unfair to cease upon this opportunity to make an example out of Imus. He's no better or no worse than many in the entertainment industry when it comes to these sorts of commetns. That being said, he apologized for what he said, he is accepting his punishment and he is meeting with the Rutgers team to make ammends. It should be let go at that.
I'm already sick of this controversy. Why does Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have to chime in on everything? Why don't they say anything about the two white cops who got shot and killed by a black guy in Charlotte, NC and complain about why their "brothers" are acting this way instead of helping the community improve. I think if they would stop concentrating on the racism issue and live to improve the communities, it would not be an issue. The longer the continue to bring every little thing up the more other people will have a bad taste in their mouth. It just gets on my nerves that these hypocrites only come out when a white person offends a black person.
Carrie, his remarks insulted women.Perhaps you should research the term he used. Slavery was also dismissed by our Founding Fathers, Women did not get the right to vote until 1921, and blacks endured this nonsense until 1965.Do we dismiss all of that too?And who really got origianlly dismissed? The Native American Indian.
Desmond, get over it. We cannot help what happened in the past, we can only try to make sure it does not happen now. The people who watch Imus know what to expect. If you don't like it, turn it off. He is always ripping someone, making rude comments, being offensive. Sharpton is just as bad in reverse. He is a bigot of the worst kind. At least Imus has some redeeming qualities with his humanitarian efforts. BTW, do you wear jeans? Do you turn a blind eye when the jeans are made in China by slave laborers?
Imus should be fired for his comments. The fact that the same type comments are used in some comedy act or in a rap song does not make it ok.Two week suspension for a guy who makes his money is a joke.Anything less than letting Imus go is endorsing him,and his comments.
Hillary Clinton, one of the chief architects of the infamous Clinton 'Sluts & Nuts' defense, demanding respect for women? Please! While she's sending messages, why doesn't she send a message to Paul Begala and James Carville, Democratic strategists, Hillary Clinton supporters and co-architects of the aformentioned Clinton 'Sluts & Nuts' defense, to stop defending Imus and appearing on his Show, both of whom appeared TODAY!
Last Nov. I saw Imus for the first time in a long time. He did an impression of Ray Nagin. I could relate to what he said at first, when he said New Orleanians were wondering where Brian Williams, Anderson Cooper and others from the mainstream media had gone--but then he said things upholding all of the stereotypes people opposed to aiding New Orleans spout. So I decided that would be the last time I saw Imus. Also, I have it on good authority that Imus has also commented on Gov. Blanco's weight. I don't think Imus is anyone to talk about how people look (whether or not what he's saying is racist and/or sexist.) He's one butt-ugly, scruffy dude and every time he dons his cowboy hat it looks like his I.Q. has dropped by half. I hope before Imus comes back, if he ever does, he undergoes a complete makeover.
Desmond,What you thoughts on Chris Rock and him using the word "craker" over and over again? Isn't this the same thing? Why doesn't ol' Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson rake him over the coals for contributing to racism? It has to work both ways!
"Man Makes Ignorant Statement" *IS* fascinating copy, but I fail to see what, exactly, it has to do with Anna Nicole Smith.
I agree that Imus' remarks were wrong, very wrong. I don't listen to Imus' show because he does this all the time. I vote with my pocketbook and turn the channel. But where are Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson when black comedians do the same thing and when black rappers make horrible and degrading songs about women? Until Sharpton and Jackson call for those people to lose their jobs also, then they are not making a good case for their cause, they are trying to BE the cause.
Dave, TN, I have a question for you. . . why did you need the need to throw "liberal" in the statement when describing Don Imus. Are you inferring that "conservatives" don't think/say these kinds of awful things?? I am just asking, because if you think "conservatives" are exempt from bigoted comments such as those of Mr. Imus, I would like to remind you of one Ann Coulter.
Mark- speaking of working both ways, let me advise all who read these blogs that this boycott business being put forth by Proctor and Gamble and Staples works both ways, too. Retailers- bow to extortion by the likes of Jackson or Sharpton, and I'm done using your products or shopping your stores. I mean it, people. If you are getting fed up with the constant double standard coming from the 'politically correct' or other 'special' interests, we still got the numbers to make 'em hurt.
When did Imus became liberal, the guy always sypport Republican candidates.
I have watched this so-called contraversey & like a lot of other's, I see nothing wrong. There is No doubt in my mind, that these women & other women there age listen to RAP music. My kid's listen to RAP as well sometimes. The lyric's in RAP talk about Killing, stealing, Ho's ( as IMUS used)etc. Now if it's OK to listen to this music ( and other like-minded musical lyric's)then why isn't ok for some ( if they choose) to use the same word's in offhandidly talking about some. Political correctness is way to exagagerated( sp). Al could use his own Racial clarification's & as pointed out above, talk about the use of the word ( Cracker)& other racially motivated slur's. this is a big todo about NOTHING. Get Over It!!!
Money talks and records sell. Do two wrongs make a right? Iowa Mom, how do you "get over" prejudice in any form? How do you dismiss your own country's history? Haven't shopped at Wal-Mart for about 6 years. My own personal boycott. As for those jeans, don't have any of those either.Guess I'm out of the loop there too.But I was born in America and have a birth certificate to prove it.
Imus is a shock jock. His comments were irresponsible and crued. TURN THE CHANNEL. It is amazing to me how people seem to just forget about the Constitution of the United States of America. Freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and in turn freedom to boycott Don Imus. So if you are so enraged, do it. I don't hear anyone calling for the firing or social ridicule of Al Sharpton for his slurs agains Jews, or The great Rev. Jesse Jackson for his "hymietown" comments. COME ON PEOPLE, there are bigger issues this world is facing than whether Don Imus is a bigot and whether or not you should watch or listen to his show. Let's keep our eye on the prize. I am sure our troops could care less if Don Imus is forced off the air.
I watch Imus pretty religiously from 6:00 to 6:30 every morning for his political commentary. He hates the shrub, I hate the shrub, he can say he hates him aloud, I can't. (I work on a military base - they all love dubya). I get my morning bushie hatred fix from Imus. He's always been outrageous but it's pretty much equal opportunity slams and put downs. In my opinion, he's old and grouchy and some mornings hates some things more than others. I can relate. His comments, though standard Imus, were as stupid and thoughtless as they come and I don't blame the girls basketball team one bit but......give me a break, this in no way took away their shining moment -how many people even knew they won what they won? All I know is they won something and I'm not sure what it was and don't really care. Good for them, hurray for the girls. So how much more attention are we going to pay to this story? Geez - the Today show seemed like it went on for hours and hours about it. We have soldiers dying in Iraq, tours are being extended, Dubya about to veto, Walter Reed in shambles, Alberto Gonzales practicing his truthiness technique, good grief isn't there something more important to discuss? I'm SICK of hearing about it!
If Janet Jackson's boob could cause such censorship, why should this be any different. At least, with Janet, she wasn't being racist. No one should use public airwaves to preach discrimination.
all of you al sharpton's, jesse jackson's, don imus. etc's get over the race issue... see the inside person...we all came from the same dirt...thanks and have a happy life///
Oh MAN! Where do I begin? First off to Susan in Florida; I tend to agree with the spirit of your post. However, let's not forget that Imus has been saying these things for close to 40 years, and up to this point nobody really cared. He may have made a fool out of himself by saying something that wasn't as funny as it was intended to be. But, frankly I don't think he deserves any "punishment" for what happened. To Dave in Tn.; You refer to Imus as a "Liberal Shock Jock." BUT, the Republican National Comittee listed his show on WFAN as being one of the recomended "conservative talk radio" venues that their membership should listen to on their website. (Interesting, huh?) To Carrie in NW Iowa; You're right. Nobody should listen to Imus expecting Pullitzer Prize winning commentary or on air poetry readings. He is, what he is.....a comedian who gets laughs by using material that is in very bad taste. I also agree that their are others who need to be reeled in as well, and Stern is probably one of them. But, why is is "more" important to make black comedians "get in line", than it is to check soem of the things that come out of Rush's mouth, Sean Hannity's or Mark Levin's? Levin in particular screams at liberal callers, and calls them humiliating names over the air. Rush airs parodies, and openly says things about The Kennedy Family, The Clintons, Democrats and Liberals in general that are especially objectionable and offensive. Hannity once publiush a book in which he compared liberalism to terrorism. It doesn't pertain to race, per se'. BUT, it's the same idea as picking on one group of people because they aren't the "same" as you. Why shouldn't THEY be kept in check as well? To NC; In some sense the white establishment brought this upon itself three and four hundred years ago when it decided to enslave black human beings, and made it worse in the 1800's and 1900's by NOT recognizing, and admitting (without hesitation) that it was wrong to segregate people based on race or color, in a civilized society. To Desmond; You are absolutely correct with what you say about the struggle for civil rights in this country. It took too long and both woman, and ethnic minorities were victimized by it. However, from the early 1900's on, Jews, Italians, and the Irish in particular were also the object of racially/ethinically motivated hatred. It wasn't directed to blacks alone. The Native Americans are indeed the group that has suffered the most. We took their land away from them, locked them up on reservations and generally made them feel like refugees in their own land. Here's the upshot to all of this; While I wouldn't chracterize what Imus said as being "socially acceptable." I wouldn't say it was racist either. He's a comedian who does humor in very bad taste. It's his trademark, and it has been for 40 years. You wouldn't even think of saying something like what he said about the Rutgers Woman's to anyone of them in person because it would be regarded as an insult....and that's what was supposed to make it funny. It didn't, but it was supposed to. Quite frankly I think there's a lot of people who are getting their 15 minutes of fame out of this, and "milking it" for all it's worth. Let Imus meet with the team and make his apology to them......and then let's MOVE ON. We have FAR, FAR, greater problems in this country than a raucus radio show host who went a little too far for a laugh. (And by the way.....this comes from as liberal a poster as you have on this board.)
Desmond - Last I checked, I was a woman. I was no more insulted by what Imus said than I am by a lot of the music I hear, which is not at all. And Dave - I would not call Imus a liberal. He hates the Clintons as much, if not more, than he hates Bush. He supported Lieberman after the Dems threw him under the bus...and Joe is far from liberal. Do a better job with your research.
As a local, growing up in Milltown, NJ, attending New Brunswick high school and finally Rutgers, I have always been a fan of Rutgers sports (this goes back to the 1960's). This year was a pure pleasure (especially those of us , who have suffered with the football program and now have seen it come to fruition). I was deeply offended by Imus' remarks and can only say that these you women should hold their heads high and it's up to you girls whether you accept his apology or not. I have the same ill feelings toward Howard Stern as well as the Jersey Guys from 101.5 FM. Perhaps a lesson to be learned about these idiots is that we can all boycott their sponsors. This seems to be the only solution to getting rid of offensive people, who only care about making a buck. God Bless you young women and also the coaches and students of Rutgers, Kindest Regards to All of You, Barry Reinhard
Imus's comments were sophomoric. He has what I call secondary racial issues, as do many white folks, not based in hate so much, but more of a class thing. Black commedians and rap artists say these things for money - talking ghetto trash is a way out of the ghetto. Yes, Hillary is piling on and taking advantage, but truth be told, amongst white candidates she holds the high ground here, thanks to Bill's history of helping black folks. My opinion is that free speech is America, but so is equality. Therefore, using racial, ethnic or gender slurs on the airwaves or in media should be considered promoting inequality and should be punishable, say by a fine. Then maybe it will die out. In the end it's all about the $$.
Desmond, you do not have to shop Walmart to buy jeans made in China. Levi, Guess, etc. I did Not dismiss my countries history. I SAID "We cannot help what happened in the past, we can only try to make sure it does not happen now". That is what people like you do. . .take a given statement and twist it to suit your needs. Being a U.S. Citizen proves what?
"Turn Off The Lights"-Bob Seger
Who cares about words? Can’t we be thicker skinned? Why is this Duke rape thing such a big deal when it isn't even true? Yet you hear nothing of the white couple in Tennessee who had been raped and murdered by 4 blacks in a recent admitted forensically proven hate crime? The 07' Channon Christian murder dwarfs everything thing race related we have ever heard about in recent years. The crime involved cutting the boyfriends penis off while he was still alive watching his girlfriend get raped and cutting away the girlfriends breast while she was still alive, then stuffing her in a trash can? Why don’t you hear of this unless you live in TN? Why can’t/won’t the media talk about the other side of the fence? Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgvmmyDpzHw
Liberalism and terrorism? J Merle, I can see the similarities....
I want to hear what the young women of Rutgers have to say. There is far too too much tub thumping and soap box preaching going on here. There is so much blatant hypocrisy from blacks who won't clean up their OWN "neighborhood", and just as much from people who have no real idea who Imus even is. I can say this much - when I insult someone, I apologize to THAT person and ask THEIR forgiveness. I don't apologize to everyone who LOOKS like them or anyone with the same ethnic background, or even everyone with the same last name. The only difference here is that it was on the radio. If you ask me, removing Bernard McGuirk from the show would remove the catalyst that usually preceeds Imus' stupidest comments. But at the end of the day, its up to the ladies of Rutgers to make a statement after they meet Imus. And for all the advertisers that remove support? Just another bunch of nickel-sucking cretins that ONLY care about the Almighty Dollar and not about who spends it at all.
My God - I actually agree with J. Merle on something. The apocalypse is now surely coming.
j Merle Stanley, when I hear the tern'shock jock" I think of once tried, never remembered term, shock theraphy to treat the crimanally insane.I do not know the history of this particular term. If anyone knows, please inform me. Iowa Mom, with all this talk of ilegal immagrants, guess, I needed to establish that I was a U.S.citizen.I apoligize if I thought you were telling me that you ignored history. The bush administration does that quite well. Guess the cobwebs filled my head.Barry Reinhard, I saw the press confernece with the Rutgers Womens Basketball Team. Their mamas should be proud. I sure was.
Might be its time to reel in all the low life shock jocks. The standards in our culture are so debased. The standard of talk so tacky, like the Jersey Guys, that as I listen, I shake my head in disbelief. It is garbage. I cringe at what they think of women.. Imus is a jerk. What is boils down to is that the young women weren't conventionally gorgeous enough for his particular taste. If they looked like Tyra Banks or Hallie Berry, he wouldn't have said a thing. They deserve respect for their athletic ability, and their dreams. His sponsers are bailing out. I do think Imus is philanthropic and doesn't deserve to be fired. He has humiliated himself, and his wife is probably giving him one hard time. She always claims he embarrasses her.I listen to him about once in a blue moon, and I think he has lost a lot of his brain cells with his former addictions.. Rev Al and Jesse Jackson are no gems either...

Carrie-NW Iowa, Dave, along with other neo-con posters as peeps and Jerry/Corpus Christi, do not research or use facts in their posts. Overall, fairly good posts, readings and musings re: Imus. Considering the source, it wasn't a big deal except to show how uninformed and out of touch people can seem.
Hillary, like Sharpton and Jackson,is in no position to throw stones[here, she is merely pandering to black votes].We will recall her infamous 'Gandhi'joke leveled at Indian-Americans a few years ago.
Ms. Clinton is the same type of phony political opportunist as Al Sharpton. One is a born liar and the other convicted. If Hillary is elected President Al Sharpton will be running the FCC. If Obama is elected Jesse Jackson will be Secretary of State. So be careful who you vote for ... lol ... personally I don't watch BET TV ... lol
I do believe that the people who called for Imus' head, didn't watch his show. Let us first clarify that I am a Black American, Liberal and a Marine Veteran. I wake every morning at 5am Central Time to watch his show and enjoy every moment.Mr Imus and his cohorts rarely miss an opportunity to refer to his wife as the "green ho" because of her "green products". They do this when she is on the as well. I have never thought that they meant that she is a WHORE that sells greening products. I am not saying that the ladies of the basketball team shouldn't have been offended by what was said. Quite frankly, after the fact, these young ladies, appear to have been raised far apart from that segment of our society that secribe to the rap culture. Yes, America. Most Americans meet their Black People from TV or the movies or those news stories that never tell you the positive acheivments of Black People, such as these young ladies.I have come to appreciate the other works Mr Imus has done on behalf of Black People and others durning the years I have watched his show. That brings me to Mr Sharpton and Mr Jackson. Sereral years ago, the people of Spellman College, made a move against Rap Music that depict Mr Imus' words and worst on a serious note, but you two were nowhere to be found. Is it ok when we do things that hurt us as a people it is ok. As a father of seven daughters and five grand-daughters, I fear Rap far more than Imus. I believe that you two are not really interested in the progress of us Black People or the unification of one America of all races, but rather to futher your approval with us so that you two can advance your own personal causes. That is a disgrace. Objective Al are all over the airwaves decrying the man and hasn't a clue as to what the man has done and is doing to futher the cause of our people. Al "we don't need his help"???!!!! Are you singing Free At Last already? Yes I am Black, yes I am a Liberal, yes I have been a Democrat all of my 60 years. And yes I am upset that you used this opportunity to futher your personal cause for our approval of you!!!!!! Good leaders will be followed because of their leadership, not their foolishness.
Now that you've cut Imus loose, I will only agree if they get rid of Rush (made fun of M.S. victims on air) , Ann Colter(makes fun of gays) , and ALL who have made a mockery of people of color, sexual difference, and Ilnness. Is it okay to make fun of illegals ? Why is it only a bad thing when it involves blacks ?? let's be fair, or shut up.
Desmond, it appears that you may have a mind locked away some where in your body. Use it and stop waiting for us to find Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq. Use your mind. God gave it to you, make use of it. Most of us have birth certificates that say we were born here. So what? Was that an attempt to make someone feel less than????????????? Since you are soooooo proud, tell us where else you've to compare us too. Or do you get your world prospective only from FOX NEWS. I bet they also tell you how to feel about the news they select to show you. C'mon Desmond..... you're smarter than that.
I didn't like his remarks at all. That he or anyone should be aloud to get away with calling any women "hos" is despicable, unless they are whores. These women were student basketball players. He, like so many people on both sides of the political spectrum, deal in generalities that are dismissive of the real people who might be hurt. And they think it's funny. Some things are not funny. They are just rude and ignorant.
I can't believe the hipocracy of Hilary Clinton's comments concerning Don Imus, especially after what her husband did to degrade other women - his wife, and his girlfriend. Get off your band wagon!
Imus made an ignorant remark. Howard Stern does the same thing all the time. Dave Chapelle did it for years. Jesse Jackson called Jews "hymies" and NYC "Hymietown". Al Sharpton called for the conviction of 6 people wrongly accused of raping Tawana Brawley; he lost a case in court for defamation of character afterward and one of the accused committed suicide because of the pressures he had to deal with. You see, no one is perfect. This country as great as it is is awash in veiled and unveiled racism. Until we put an end to all forms of racism, implicit and explicit, this country will never change. It's not like this just happened yesterday; this country's foundations were rooted with slavery and not a lot has happened to effect real societal change.
First of all, anyone who thinks Imus and rappers and black comedians have something in common are just plain idiots, and this is why. If I go out and buy a Snoop Dogg CD or a Richard Pryor or Eddie Murphy CD, I am choosing to spend my money and listen to it. That is my choice. But, when I'm riding in my car listening to Imus in the Morning or watching him on TV and he calls black college female basketball players "Nappy-headed Hoes" I gotta be honest with you I'm not looking for that. There's no room for that kind of nonsense at all. MSNBC TV today, CBS Radio tomorrow. He should have been fired before he finished his show the day he made those remarks.
What Imus said was certainly stupid, however, ive heard much worse in rap lyrics. Why doesn't Sharpton and the other self serving people out there take on those in the Rap industry ?
Hey Art, Desmond is a card carrying liberal. Wow, FOX news? You obviously haven't read many of his posts. Although it is funny how quick the Fox news accusation comes out when you THINK you are dealing with a conservative.
I'm with you Glen! I've written to each company and explained why I will no longer purchase or accept their items if given to me. I will be going through my cabinets and clearing out as much as possible that I have from these sponsors and donating it to a local shelter so that it's not completely wasted. Luckily, I don't have a GM car and I wouldn't expect people to purge things like that but I think if people clear out all that clutter and donate it to a charity so that people know why you're doing it and let them know that conditional support goes both ways. Procter & Gamble shouldn't be so judgmental since they're the makers of IAMS and Eukanuba, the pet foods that caused so many pets to get sick and even caused death in some cases. I believe they're wanting (and needing) our support right about now.
It sounds like many of you are as tired of the brazen double standard in this country regarding free speech. If media and press consider what any celebrity has to say regarding the "enlightened" views on politics, religion, race or sexual orientation without redress, why are they trashing Don Imus? Is it only certain people who have immunity? I'd give Don's comments about as much weight as anything, outside of a movie script, uttered by Sean Penn, The Dixie Chicks, Ricky Martin, Susan Sarandon or any other of the long list of celebrities who seem to believe that their socio-economic status have given them inspired insight to the woes of this nation. It seems to me that celebrities have stopped being entertainers and are only propelled by how much "face" (other other anatomical parts) time they're given in the media or press. Props to those true entertainers that can truly entertain us and still manage to keep their personal lives, opinions and voices private.
The gutless wonders at nbc have blundered. The Imus remarks may have been in bad taste. I really didn't care for them myself. However, that type of language is used on a daily basis by the hip hop community and a substantial number of blacks. I would go so far as to say that if Imus hadn't heard it from those sources, he wouldn't have known how to express those sentiments in that way. Taken at face value the only entity to be injured by Imus' remarks is Imus himself. If people find it that repugnant, they will of their own volition, stop watching/listening to Imus. For corperations to cave to intimidation and extortion is appalling to me. You don't seem to remember free speech nor a quote from Thomas Paine I believe," I may disagree with what you say , but I will defend until death your right to say it." The corperation cowards have slinked out of the building, but I have taken notice and as sure as there is a tomorrow I won't be buying the products of GM , proctor and Gamble,or any of those who have pulled their support from Imus. Just an after thought here.....I have only listened to Imus through snippets and have never seen or listened to his program and am not among his throng of followers. How ironic it is that anyone would give creedence to some slime like sharpton after his attempt at fraud with the tawauna brawley(spelling?) debacle! Who are you bowing to anyway? Welcome to the third world, you have lost your integrity
You people didn't watch Imus' show. Imus and his wife are both republicans. He wants McCain to win. He was the greatest supporter of Harold Ford (D) Tn. on his show. You couldn't have watched his show and insist that he is a racist.Too bad that all of you will not see his show now and see for yourself. Yes I am Black and a life long Liberal.Liberman, pay attention to the news. Mr Liberman is stong supporter of the state of Isreal and will support any war in the Middle East where Isreal is concerned.Don't you know that we could have trained half the country of Iraq by now. Were we to plane the Iraqs to Paris Island SC and they would have as much training as any of our soldiers over there. Then there would be another problem. They would learn our methods and train others. A little Marine Corps Training and you would have all religous background on one accord. I know, it took us about two weeks and we were on one note. Carrie, Janet Jackson's outcry had nothing to do with exposer. It was an issue of"size matters"
