Gravel-ing For Coverage

Posted: Monday, May 14, 2007 1:35 PM by Chuck Todd

From NBC's Carrie Dann
To call Sen. Mike Gravel an '08 "hopeful" is to merely scratch the surface of his optimism.

"I will get the Democratic nomination," he declared this morning at Washington's National Press Club.  Of his proposal for Congressional action to end the war, he boasted "If they follow these tactics, by Labor Day, it's all over." Of the Bush administration? "Impeachment will come," he reassured the anti-war activists in the audience. "Don't worry about that."

Gravel, who's been accused of "cluttering the stage" of last month's Democratic debates, appeared at the Press Club to lay out a strategy for Congressional action that would end the war in Iraq.  His proposal calls for daily votes (seven days a week) in the Senate until the president's veto of a withdrawal date is overridden, and it would subject administration officials to felony charges if they failed to comply with the deadline.

His address attracted a staunch anti-war crowd, including iconic protestor Cindy Sheehan, who applauded Gravel's sentiments but appeared wary of his methods. She asked him if he was working with any members of Congress to enact his plan  (his reply: "nope") and suggested that he consider a third-party partnership with peace poster child Dennis Kucinich (his reply: he doesn't plan on losing at the convention in Denver.)

Questioned about the press's cynicism of his White House hopes, Gravel scoffed that "the arrogance of some in the Fourth Estate knows no bounds."  Well, let no one accuse us of not giving him his due.

Hey, his name is GRAVEL, not MOHAIR. Dubya wants everybody to think his name is SEQUOIA.
I am proud to support Mike Gravel. He offers the promise of fundamental change to our foreign policy. Hillary and Obama merely propose superficial changes. Hillary & Obama represent More of the Same and Politics as Usual. Senator Gravel represents the People! Vote for Mike Gravel!
WOW!! Gravel-Kucinich! Now that's a winning ticket!
Did I read that right? "Let no one accuse us of not giving him his due." ??? He's been a declared candidate for more than a year and hardly anyone had ever heard of him until last month. Is that because the big media have been giving him his due? On the other hand, this is the first (and so far the only) mention of his press conference in the "news" media, so I guess I can't be too harsh on you. This would be funny if it were not so tragic.
Gravel? Now how many clowns are crowding the extreme left ring in this stoneage circus? Igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary, Gravel is two rocks short of a stone triad where his brain should have been.
Sounds like "Big Mike" is Mike Gravel! Both parties have there strange presidential candidates for 2008. I stay awake all night worrying about a Mike Gravel - Tommy Thompson third party movement. They both demonstrate the need for increased federal funding for mental health services.
Hey Carrie Dann, How about letting the American people decide which candidates clutter the stage and which are the "top tier" (I hate that designation.)We have enough people offering opinions without the media putting their thumb on the scales. You guys are in charge of facts. Please stick to them. (and please don't go all "The Note" on us!)
Mike Gravel has never married one of his cousins. He beleives in evolution, but not in "voo doo economics" or "the surge". And he's neither a Mormon nor a Scientologist. Doesn't that make him saner than most (or all) the the Republican candidates ?
Oh god !!!! Oh no!!! Mike Gravel wants Freedom !!! This guy must be a nutjob!! I guess Americans are used to being told what to do ... I guess when a guy comes along and does not give fake answers, speaks his mind does not want to blow stuff up and talks about giving the voters back what used to be ours "Freedom!" He is a "Left Wing Nut Job". He wants to put the power back in the hands of the voters, Maybe us Americans are to lazy for the job. When is enough enough ??? Keep On messing with those people. American Government is a big bully that likes to pick on people. This war is like columbine, the students that are getting picked on are the Iraqis and the Government is the kids who finally had enough and shot up the school. Leave those people alone... Yeah sure all the crazy stuff that Happening: little Iraqi kids getting there faces and arms blown off and losing there homes and families. That is going to solve everything huh, ever heard of revenge? keep on messing with those people..Let's say, We do stay there, what is there to win?? What do we get some kind of trophy? Do you guys think that terrorism will go away. haha!! Oh yeah, also it's not our country to put in government into power: also a recent poll done A large majority of Iraqis–71%–say they would like the Iraqi government to ask for US-led forces to be withdrawn from Iraq within a year or less. I'm sure one of you guys will by like well what about "911"???? Wait so what you guys are saying, is that the only thing with all our power is go into another war. Lose more Americans lives. There is nothing else... NOTHING we could have done besides going into a HUGE WAR??!! My parents taught me solve my problems with my mind not my fists, Come on America. Bush took a American Tragedy and made something so dirty out of it. Wake up People!!! If what were doing is so right how come every Country in the world hates us??? All you guys that are talking trash on Mr.Gravel, are probably the same people who put this Genius or as he likes to be called "The Commander Guy" that we have now into office not once but twice. Great Job America! It's pretty sad that our Current Commander an Chief is the butt of every joke. Mr.Mike Gravel made all the other democratic candidates look like lame ducks ... All The other candidates are all the same they give they're fake answer because they know what people want to hear Notice that the everyone one is a Christian(Roman Catholic,Methodist,United Church of Christ) Besides Mr.Mike Gravel(Unitarian) Why is that Hmm Maybe it gets votes, lame!!! Every election is the same things all the time.. Mr.Gravel Came out and spoke his mind That is what I like. Good for you Mr.Gravel... Also If Ms.Clinton wins that will be 24 years of Bushes and Clinton. Great Job America Way to pick em!!!
Mike Gravel, Dennis Kucinich, and Ron Paul should together create and lead the New American Century!!! All the other 'hopefuls' are just a boring replay of all those usual puppets serving the military-industrial complex controlled by Jewish extremists and christian fundamentalists.
It takes big boulders to move small minds and the status quo is quite small. Hilary is a closet republican war hawk and Obama is too green and inexperienced; 10,000 fatalities in the latest mid-west tornado. Edwards is all scissor hands. Give me a break.
Unlike every other candidate, Mike Gravel is a true American Hero. He served in the Army, fought to end the draft, exposed the government deceit behind Vietnam. The son of immigrants, he had to work for a living like the rest of us. He intends to use his time in office to take power away from special interests and give it back to us with ballot initiatives. If you can't get behind Mike, you're basically saying you need mommy and daddy government to baby you and spoon feed you. Frankly, I'm tired of being spoon fed; I'm ready for a steak. Sure, the plate may be hotter than you expected, and the sizzling makes a lot of noise, but take a bite and you won't be missing your Gerber's mashed Republicans and Democrats any more! Check out the gravel2008 website right now!
Amy, I'm also tired of the media telling us who the top candidates are. They are not experts, as far as I'm concerned. Everyone they pick seems to lose.
Can we have a co-presidency? Ron Paul/Dennis Kucinich/Mike Gravel or some variation thereof....we need these 3 guys. Google videos: 9/11 Press for Truth, Loose Change 2nd Edition
This story reeks of flippant condescension. Senator Gravel's proposal to end the Iraq war deserves respect because it can end the war. It cannot be denied that this is what the American people want. I will be proud to cast my vote for Mike Gravel.
My initial take on Gravel was that of an old oddball 'cluttering the stage' - I was leaning towards Obama or Gore. After reading up on him and listening to interviews, I'm hooked. No one else in the Democratic lineup has the vision/wisdom/character/brains/charisma of this long-shot maverick. Hillary will keep our military in the middle east for a decade to protect "our" oil. Obama's too green, and Edwards' ambulance-chasing past disturbs me. Gravel has greatness written all over him - an elder statesmen among a pack of 'climbers'.
Whoever thought that a war Karl Rove called a "winning issue (for Republicans)" in 2002, would be used by Democrats, against other Democrats in 2008? I guess Rove was right after all, wasn't he?
Gravel? His campaign sure would give Jay Leno and all the late night people extra fodder for years. He is smoking wayyyyyy too much grass to even think he has a chance to win in 08. In a contest, he might win California(with all the hippies they have there). But I think if he was taken seriously enough to win, and I don't think he has enough stones(pardon the pun) to even survive before the straw vote, He would make for some good comedy from the left, becuase that is all the left has to offer at this point. He would be beaten worse then Mondale and McGovern got whipped in their runs as the democratic contenders. Come on Libs, don't you have anyone worth their weight in water? If even Cindy Sheehan doubts you, you have a problem fella.
While Mike Gravel came off as angry during the initial debate, his foreign policy made more sense than any of the other hopefuls on stage - we are the ones who proliferate the weapons of mass destruction, daring other countries to do the same. It's nice to see someone who actually is dedicated to peace, rather than just peace in Iraq. While he hasn't been around in the last 20 some years, his past record is still much more impressive than the others that were on stage - ending the draft, releasing the full Pentagon Papers to ensure the military's cover-ups were on display. We need someone to bring democracy to this country, instead of the elitist, hawkish politicians we currently have. "Well, let no one accuse us of not giving him his due." - to be fair on this - the kindly folks at MSNBC tried to dis include him from their rankings - only by dedicated lobbying did they bring him back - talk about the media picking our candidates for us... is this a democracy? Links to verify my last statements...http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/?q=node/22117 And the ranking page that mentions his return... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16710815 This does indicate he won't be ranked fairly, either... (but thanks for giving him some mention)
After long being the first declared Presidential candidate, Gravel IS getting a bit of attention online, but it doesn't seem to be increasing his approval rating, or the funding of his destitute campaign. It makes me wonder if online visibility really does anything to help candidates get ahead in the polls. This article's flippant attitude towards Gravel's candidacy is disheartening. I thought we were living in a country where anybody could be President? If the internet can't bring democracy back to politics, what can? I actually just wrote a piece on what it would take for Gravel to actually become a contender at http://www.hotcards.com/blog/4/34.html. Luckily, it doesn't depend on the receptivity of the press.
Republicans take straw polls. Democrats don't, jerry.
Mike Gravel is the best thing in politics I have ever heard! His honesty makes me feel almost good about our political system. He is holding the other Democratic candidates accountable for their positions and statements and displaying the kind of leadership and intelligence this country desperately needs. I hope that when the American people hear the truth coming from a person with his passion, courage and integrity, they will be as inspired as I am. Mike Gravel deserves a chance to be heard!
While every time the mainstream media cover Gravel, they condescend and mock (note the title - Grovel...i mean Gravel-ing for Coverage). And yet, every time in the comments, 95% positive remarks and support. If the media did its (theoretical) job, communicating information on policy, personal record, and political convictions, the poll numbers would reflect Gravel's real position. So long as the media do their (practical) job of sidelining candidates and views which demand real change in the American system of governance and economic distribution, real peace, and real engagement in the world, it will be 'business as usual'. Gravel's lack of coverage is a function of his REFUSAL to grovel, for coverage, for support, for funds. Name other candidates...hell, politicians...who aren't bought, paid for, owned? Short list... The tragedy and hope of democracy is that we can get the leaders we deserve; regime change starts at home. Lets hope that in this election, that the people decide.
