From NBC's Mark Murray
Speaking of McCain and Falwell, McCain just released this statement: "I join the students, faculty, and staff of Liberty University and Americans of all faiths in mourning the loss of Reverend Jerry Falwell. Dr. Falwell was a man of distinguished accomplishment who devoted his life to serving his faith and country."

More: "Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Falwell's family at this difficult time."

Falwell was a closed minded jerk...with quotes like these. "Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions” "AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals” "The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country” "If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being” "Textbooks are Soviet propaganda” "The ACLU is to Christians what the American Nazi party is to Jews”
I had the pleasure to attend Treasure Island in Lynchburg, VA for several summers in the mid-80's. The camp was affiliated with Liberty U and Dr. Falwell's church. Those summers have left me with both fond memories and values.
Dr Falwell's passing is a sad day for this nation. He was a tremendous preacher, a great pastor, and a good man. Like the rest of us, he often spoke before he thought, but he was indeed a wonderful person. This nation is the better because he chose to contribute to it.
I pass my sincere condolences on to all who knew Mr. Falwell. I never celebrate the death of any individual, but let's be clear Senator McCain - he served a portion of this country. His hate speech did more to divide than to unite this great land. His retoric will not be missed.
Jerry Falwell stood for hate and intolerance. Let's go forward with a more tolerant America that truly acts with love not hate. For you Christians out there...isn't that what Jesus taught? Condolences to his family...
so whos gonna step up and defame everyone in gods name?
What a hateful, arrogant, and divisive person...you'd never find him in any slum helping the poor, feeding the hungry, taking care of the sick. What an eye opening experience he's wittnessing now...may he rest in peace.
McHypocrite has spoken....in 2000 McCain called him everything but Satan....but for this campaign he sold his soul to Falwell and bush..... Google videos: 9/11 Press for Truth, Loose Change 2nd Edition
He was a great man who spoke his opinion. Too many people disagree to what he said due to their ignorance of the reality that there is a God.
All i will say is that as a resident of Lynchburg, VA I am glad that he will no longer be able to currupt the city government to his will. I didn't like him much before I moved here but then after having lived here and seen and heard all the different things that he got himself involved in I could not stand him. I do not wish death on anyone including Jerry. However, his absence will hopefully allow the city to do things it needs to do financially to grow and prosper. It's easy to believe what you see on tv and hear on radio it is a whole other ballgame when it starts affecting you in your front yard and surroundings.
Mr. Falwell is probably, as we speak, finding out the TRUE meaning of "thou shalt not judge." May he find peace in the acceptance he receives as opposed to the rejections he showed others who were not like him. RIP Mr. Falwell and my condolences to your family.
911truthdotorg. I like McHypocrite. As I stated yesterday his appearance on MTP was comical. Tim Russert showed so many clips of McHypocrite saying one thing and them quote him saying another. He didn't know whether he was coming or going after Tim got done with him. He says whatever he has to at the time to get by.
My sympathy goes out to the family of Rev. Falwell and to all those who will continue to carry on what he believed. I respect his fervor to spread the message of Jesus Christ and speaking to the world not only about His love but also about the reality of all of what the Bible speaks. You will forever be missed.
Sad day for morons who believed in him. What a lunatic, RIP Falwell, anyone with common sense knows that your mind wasn't right while you were here. Look out Pat R.
At this point I would normally say simply "let the dead rest" and move on, but even though there may have been many who were uplifted by Falwell and his message and who also became better people as a result, these people, IMHO, are in a distinct minority. Far too many other people have been negatively affected and emotionally scarred by this man's general message of hatred and intolerance. And he did this in the name of Christ, a man whose message was the polar opposite. May he rest in peace--and condolences to the people in his family who must go through their natural period of grief--but I am not even going to pretend to show this man any respect.
Imagine that! Gasbag McCain jumping on the hatemonger express!
WoW. Everyone's ready to flay the late Jerry Falwell. I always thought he was a little over the top, but not anymore. After reading alot of posts about his "hate" speech etc, I 've come to see that he was simply speaking biblical truth. To all those who would say that Jesus spoke of tolerance, well simply put your wrong. Jesus spoke out against the society he lived in, and as a result was crucified. If to have the opinion that homosexuality is wrong and depraved means your a "hate" monger, then I'm proud to be one. I suppose all the homosexuals who literally hate christians will never be considered "hate" mongers though there words are usually much more vicious and demeaning. All christians say is it's wrong to have sexual relations with the same sex, just as it's wrong to have pre-marital sex. I love you all. Flame me.
"Love Hurts"-Nazerth
Dan in San Francisco--The Christ did not say one thing about homosexuality--thus the view you put forth is is not a "Christian concept." The old Testament does speak to it--so I understand you are not a Christian on the topic of homosexuality but rather and "Old Testamenter." I have a hard time with Old Testamenters calling themselves Christians.
DAN-Looking at this from ''if it walks like a duck''Dept. You are correct. One would not expect the orthodox Falwell to say or believe anything else.He was as motivated by his beliefs as are the feminists, gays and lesbians he derided who fought hateful[to these]fire with fire during the palmy years of the ''Moral Majorities''existance.''Love and Tolerance''were expressed by screaming at parishioners, tossing balloons filled with animal blood at these, charging into church services and making obscene remarks, fistfighting with cops in front of churches, and the like. The militant ACT-UP,and QUEER NATION were merely Falwell in drag. They were as filled with hatred as the man they denigrated. No Kings or Gandhis among these.Agreements to disagree were tossed from the train.
If Jesus thought you were helping out on propagating truth, love and harmony, he would have given you more time to live on this earth...at 73 your time is up! Jesus is a very smart man in my eyes. There is no room for more HATE in this world of ours. I am glad your dead you tub of donkey crap!
He was crazy. I'm not happy that he's dead, but I am happy that he wont spread messages that are clearly wrong anymore.
Yeah, well I attended Jerry's college when Paul (last name forgotten) was the homosexual Chorale leader. He had several gay men in the chorale at the time. I also remember treasure island. I lived at the hotel but sex with muscle boy college students on the island in bunkbeds will always be MY memory even though you wont print it...you will remember it
If any of you all really knew Jerry Falwell, you would not say any of these things.
He honestly never judged anyone!!
Just spoke the Bible.... and if u can't take that...
In the regards to TRUTH, Jesus came to bring a sword, not peace.
And for the comment on government... Its also true that he and the school did AMAZING things for the economy of Lynchburg
