Thompson hurts Rudy in the polls

As we wrote earlier today, McCain could be the biggest loser with Fred Thompson establishing a "testing the waters" committee, because he will begin gobbling up GOP money that McCain needs for a strong 2nd quarter fundraising performance. But NBC/WSJ pollster Neil Newhouse (R) tells First Read that Thompson pulls more from Giuliani -- at least in the polls.

In the April NBC/WSJ poll, Giuliani led McCain among GOP voters, 39%-24%, with Romney at 12%. But with Thompson on the ballot, Giuliani was at 33%, McCain at 22%, Thompson at 17%, and Romney at 12%.

Moreover, among GOP voters who said they were "dissatisfied" with the GOP field were initially voting for Giuliani by 29%-25%-11% over McCain and Romney. But on the second ballot, those who said they were "dissatisfied" with the field had Thompson out in front 29%-22%-20%-10% over Giuliani, McCain, and Romney.

Says Newhouse: "So, it appears Fred pulls more from Rudy ... whose support has been buttressed by GOP voters who are not all that satisfied with the GOP field."

McCain, Guiliani and Thompson- the three stooges.
If Fred gets in the mix it's going to come down to Thompson, Gulianni, and Romney, in that order. If we had some smart voters on the left we'd have Richardson as our front runner.
the rich will buy gigilani and steve forbes the nomination don't kid yourself, the other cats may as well stay at the house they're done
Better then Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Could 2008 be the year that we return to true nominating conventions...wouldn't that be great? On both sides? Whatever the outcome, it's a great time to be a political junkie. We might even find a new third party emerging from the chaos. Go for it Fred. Like him or not, he sure adds to the drama. Bloomberg, Gore, Gingrich...the more the merrier.
Awesome! Even though in Chicago, I'm in the heart of Obama country, Barak ain't got the chops, yet. But, at least I can stomach the jr Senator from Illinois (for a little while, at least). With Fred running, that would make two candidates (from either party) that doesn't either make me wretch via their vile, elocutionary pandering (Hillary), or make me want to vomit in my own mouth (McCain/Edwards). Still, I'm curious as to when this country will see some candidates possessing at least a minor bit of presidential bearing, cuz right now, we got nuthin'.
Wouldn't it be funny if it came down to Thompson and Gore. I think the whole north east would join Canada.
Mr. Thompson has cancer.Period.
Give me a break! Another GOP candidate / president tied to a script. When will the duping of the bubba's and thumper's stop
If the Democrats were smart, they'd draft Mark Warner like the Republicans have drafted Fred Thompson. Warner was a popular governor who Republicans tried but just couldn't hate, and who would easily carry his own red, southern state - even if the Republican nominee was another Virginian. Not a huge state, but big enough that if you add Virginia's electors to the usual blue mix, suddenly the mathematical possibilities for the Republican nominee start getting real tight.
FRED FRED FRED FRED!
Fred is kicking major butt in many online polls. He is #1 at www.tshirtpoll.com I am excited about supporting him with money and time.
"McCain, Guiliani and Thompson- the three stooges." Clever...
Actor? Um yeah, Fred did a little acting. His resume though is more impressive than most of the other candidates. Don't take my word, look it up.
Another Bush clone -- who cares.
What has McCANE to lose but his sanity? He already lost his dignity in 04 when he had to fall in love with Butler (BUsh+hiTLER) so he could keep his eyes on 08.
Possible W.House hopeful Thompson says has cancer reuters.com Found 49 days ago WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Possible Republican 2008 presidential contender Fred Thompson revealed on Wednesday he has a slow-growing form of cancer, now in remission, and he does not expect it to shorten his life. http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSN1121364220070411
Fred Thompson "looks presidential." Maybe Martin Sheen could run. He "looks presidential" also. I wonder who would win of the two. Probably Sheen. I always liked "The West Wing." I also like "Law and Order," but not as much.
Democrats are a cancer, and we've learned to live with them. Thompson should be just fine. Better if he picks Condi for VP :-)
Its cancer. Neither he nor his doctor knw when it will come out of remission.
Thompson has a slow growing cancer now in remission? Is that like Cheneys minor heart problems and how he was in great physical shape when becoming VP? Give me a break. You can't believe anything they say.
Republicans have become the 'Twenty-Odd Per Cent Bunch'. Twenty=odd per cent like all the various candidates, which fits perfectly with the twenty-odd per cent who like Dubya. The key word being '-odd'.
Hillary is going to get the nomination and pick Mark Warner of Virginia. They would easily carry Virgina, hence the election is over since no Republican can win unless he takes the entire Confederacy, besides, the GOP will take a horrible beating in Ohio. Rudi was a great mayor, however, once his ethical troubles are used against him, he will quickly fall apart. McCain is washed up and like Bob Dole, going through the motions.
Since the office of the President has numerous advisors, cabinet members and all other types of assets at his/her disposal, I think that sincerity, population respect, speaking ability and leadership are key to a good presidential candidate. So far only Fred Thompson works for me.
Fred = war monger and Iraq war lover.

No war monger will have a chance in 2008. 70%, and growing, of the population are against the Iraq war...big deal if republicans like this war mongering lobbyist...he has no chance at all in the general election and you will hand the votes to Hillary if you run hollywood Fred, the 18 year lobbyist.
