Immigration

This afternoon, President Bush participates in a briefing on comprehensive immigration reform -- another attempt, it seems, to sell the Senate bill to the public. Per NBC’s Kelly O’Donnell, White House advisers say Secretaries Chertoff and Gutierrez will lead the briefing, which will include representatives from business, agricultural, Hispanic, religious, conservative, and immigrant-rights groups.

Is immigration causing fundraising problems for the RNC? The Washington Times: “The Republican National Committee, hit by a grass-roots donors' rebellion over President Bush's immigration policy, has fired all 65 of its telephone solicitors, The Washington Times has learned… Several of the solicitors fired at the May 24 meeting reported declining contributions and a donor backlash against the immigration proposals now being pushed by Mr. Bush and Senate Republicans… A spokeswoman for the committee denied any drop-off in fundraising.”

This very well might be the basis of a question at Tuesday’s GOP debate in New Hampshire. Writes Peggy Noonan, What political conservatives and on-the-ground Republicans must understand at this point is that they are not breaking with the White House on immigration… What conservatives and Republicans must recognize is that the White House has broken with them. What President Bush is doing, and has been doing for some time, is sundering a great political coalition. This is sad, and it holds implications not only for one political party but for the American future.”

The Los Angeles Times looks at the split within organized labor over the immigration bill. “On one side of the debate are the AFL-CIO and other large industrial unions whose members have historically seen illegal immigrants as unwanted competitors. The other side includes the Service Employees International Union, whose members have healthcare, property management and public service jobs, and Unite Here, which represents garment, hotel and restaurant workers. These unions have embraced immigrants, even those here illegally.”

More: “Some Democratic strategists say the labor divide could be enough to halt the bill, given the amount of added opposition from immigrant groups and businesses. Others predict that the SEIU and Unite Here will succeed in moving the bill forward with their lobbying and organizing of immigrant workers.”

7000 iraqs immigrating to the US legally, I guess iraq aint worth fighting for for some iraqs. 2 million iraqs have already deserted iraq for greener pastures , how many more will bush bring here, at least they will be here legally thanks to bush. who's jobs will they get? ask bush, how many sleeper cells in 7000? ask bush How many more Americans will die so iraqs 2 million iraqs can sit on the sideline and wait and see what happens in THEIR country? ask bush. How many more coward raqs will bush bring here LEGALLY? ask bush
I'm wondering where the $5K each immigrant has to pay to the US is going to. Does it go to hire more border patrol agents or support existing ones? Does it go toward building the fence? Will it go to support job programs so that the new illegal aliens can do jobs besides picking fruit or cleaning motel room? Or, does it, like most government income, disappear into contracts to private companies to do work which becomes obselete before it is finished or has so many cost overuns it is no longer a bargain?
It sseems the Iraqi Immigrants will have a dubious advantage over other people immigrating to the USA. They are being given a Pamphlet and Video, by the White House, called "How to Speak American like Dubya!"
I wonder why president bush isn't including any average american citizens in his briefing? His briefing is not going to change anyones mind, although I'm quite sure they will create a new poll that shows otherwise, maybe some of his esteemed briefing attendee's will mow the white house lawn afterwords
And again, as usual, the White House ignores what American CITIZENS want, deserve, and now at last are DEMANDING from our gov. The GOP is just beginning to see what is going to happen if they allow this ridiculous "amnesty" bill pass. It is going to be political suicide for each and every one of them for selling us out yet again. Looks like Tom Tancredo is our only hope to take America back for our citizens and to preserve our language and our culture. Our present leaders continue to put any immigrant - legal or illegal ahead of our citizens who are paying taxes to keep this nation and this gov. afloat. Keep the heat on your representatives. Google them and get contact info to call, email, fax, visit - by any means you can possibly use - people contact them NOW. When the money for the GOP starts to dry up from the little people and a the honest companies who are not using cheap illegal alien labor, and they keep hearing that Americans are fed up - that is our only chance. They lie to us about security - the border is just as open now as it was a year ago. It will stay open under Bush unless he is FORCED to secure it. He wants open borders and open trade with Mexico. Another little secret they don't want us to know and to publicize because they know we won't stand for it. As for the Iraqis coming here - I agree with the poster who said why are WE fighting and dying over there when millions of them care so little about Bush's "democracy" for them that they tucked tail and got the hell out of Dodge. As if we don't already have MORE than enough Muslims here to worry about - Bush is bringing us whole towns of them. All who think they are going to love the US and be happy to be here because their homeland has been destroyed raise your hand. How many of us would be happy to move to a country that was responsible for the destruction of OUR home? We may be safe there but I just don't think we would ever forgive for what we lost. Our only hope is our phone calls, our emails, our visits to our reps offices, our faxes and to stay alert until election day. What a mess Bush is leaving for our grandchildren and their grandchildren to pay for. All of you who voted to put him BACK in office after he showed his incompetency and total disregard for the good of America's CITIZENS - you should be working doubly hard to block his amnesty and anything else he comes up with. After all - you put him back in the drivers seat when we all could see he was drunk at the wheel.
If there was no dropoff in fundraising why did the RNC fire all the telephone solicitors?
The most dramatic denouncements of the Bush administration came in Peggy Noonan's last couple paragraphs, which aren't blogged here.
I am a legal immigrant with a PHD. A biotech company wants to hire me to work on HIV drugs but I can't get a H-1b working visa. If the bill passes, I will claim myself as an illegal immigrant to get a Z visa, which will permit me to work right away. What a dumb comprehensive reform, it favors illegal immigrants so much.
While I consider President Bush an extremely intelligent and compassionate man I am confused as to why he would put himself in the path of so much hostility just to help our neighbors to the south. President Fox of Mexico has been an faithful friend of this country and done all he could to make our life better so why would we want to take some of his best citizens and convert them to U.S. Citizens maybe it’s like I said that President Bush is just a compassionate person. As for the 7000 Iraq Immigrants its easy to understand his thinking in bringing them to the U.S. we are going to put them into Mexican neighborhoods in California and teach their wimpy ass how to fight.
Here's the thread to Peggy Noonan's article as cited by Paul Miller above. http://www.opinionjournal.com/columnists/pnoonan/ Do I hear neo-cons crying in the darkeness....is Bush brand kool aid becoming more scarce?? The Repubs are not only jumping ship, they are eating their own!!
Oh Bob you forgot to add ....LOL LOL LOL
Pass the Dam bill, it will insure a full sweep for the Democrats in 08!!! The bill will mean squat as the old laws were not enforced. Why would the new ones be different?
"While I consider President Bush an extremely intelligent and compassionate man" ... your kidding right?
A song for Peggy Noonan. "Who's Sorry Now"-Connie Francis
Recardo - It's a cold hard fact: 28 percent of the population is dummer than the other 72.
Recardo My mama taught me that if you couldn't say something nice about someone don'e talk about the A**h***s.
The Edge, Thanks for the thread. If more repubs and TRUE conservatives read the article (and not the Cliff notes), maybe we could get the country working together again. The disillusionment with the bush admin goes far beyond the dems, lefties and indies...it goes to his own party. We all need to wake up and realize the REAL enemy of historical/traditional American ideaology & virtues may very well be sitting in the White House. It is sad to think that, but 6+ years of actions speak far louder than rhetoric. Can't wait to get blasted by the bushies!!
Mark Y...I'm glad you read the thread...the remaining bushies will become more and more bellicose and shrill as the 'Core 26%' deteriorate...some will stand to the last man, kinda like Davy Crockett and Volunteers at the Alamo. NO Wait!!! More like a kid laying on the floor, throwing a tantrum because they can't have their kool-aid anymore...! Ryan, Michigan...did you read the thread? You're not alone as a conservative whom is fed up with our current regime-Noonan will make you feel you're not alone in the wilderness:-)
I read it, Edge, and think it's pretty amazing to see this kind of reaction from people who consider themselves real conservatives, and realize they've been had.
The main problem regarding illegal immigration is that, (despite the intended results of NAFTA pushed forward by Clinton,) instead of Mexico becoming more like the US, (plentiful & good paying jobs, a relatively economically stable Middle Class, and expanding economic base to benefit society as a whole,) the US is becoming ever-more like Mexico, (rampant & endemic corruption in government & business and a deteriorating Middle Class dependant on low wage jobs.) Despite deteriorating conditions for the Middle Class in the US, because the American economy is so massive to begin with, even plentiful low wage jobs are enough to lure poor Mexicans to cross the border illegally.
I suspect you won't see many such posts in the WSJ in the future considering who is buying that magazine.
Bob in Kokomo, I like your quote. Here's another one: "If you can't say something nice about someone, come sit next to me." Olympia Dukakis in "Steel Magnolias"
a house built in on weak foundation will not stand. republicans often refer to the free market. the free market has decided the the decider and his crew offered cheap faulty products. They promoted them with false ads.Any party of governance that did what has done by this one would be in the same predicament
