Ames straw poll

Yesterday, both the Giuliani and McCain campaigns announced they wouldn’t be participating in the Ames straw poll. The Des Moines Register: "No candidate in the straw poll's nearly 30 year history has bypassed the event and won the caucuses." But with three of the four front-runners out, this streak could be broken.

The New York Times sees the decision by Giuliani and McCain to skip the straw poll as having to do with the changing primary calendar. "Their decision was the clearest indication of how much the changing primary calendar is upending presidential politics this year, as candidates grapple with the prospect of huge primaries in crucial states like Florida on Jan. 29 and California, New York and Texas a week later."

But don't assume that the $3 million or so that Giuliani and McCain save from not competing is somehow helpful for the later states. (What exactly does $3 million buy in California? Not much.) This decision was not about the calendar as it was about not giving Romney an opportunity for a major win this August. Don't over-read into this decision by both campaigns. Remember, Romney was spending endless amounts of money to win this straw poll.

Indeed, the Los Angeles Times sees the decision as about slowing down Romney. "The lack of top-tier competition could undercut a Romney victory, denying the former Massachusetts governor momentum from a win."

The Des Moines Register’s Yepsen: “The Ames straw poll has become a shake-down of candidates that, for some, has replaced the caucuses themselves as a test of viability.” But “that trial run is useful training for caucus night,” especially for Giuliani, who “is slow getting started in Iowa,” and “could use a little hustle.” “Romney’s win won’t count for much.”

By the way, we got our hands on an internal Romney Iowa poll from late May. That poll, taken a week ago, had Romney at 29%, Giuliani at 12%, Fred Thompson and Gingrich at 10% each, McCain at 9%, and Huckabee at 7%. This was a significant change from a March Romney poll, which had Giuliani at 24%, McCain at 17%, Gingrich and Romney at 15%, and Huckabee at 7%.

I guess the corn people are not as important as they used to be.
Jerry from CC Texas, only you would view McCain and Giuliani not coming to Iowa for the straw poll with a sarcastic statement, that you guess its because "the corn people are not as important as they used to be." How pathetic!
I have to say I'm glad they're skipping this event. I have nothing whatesoever against Iowans, but this whole presidential campaign has already started WAY too early and the last thing we need are more "events" to accelerate that process further, especially when such events have little real impact on what ultimately happens. No disrespect to Iowa, but the straw poll should be put away along with any similar events that happen so far in advance of the election.
Don't forget Robert, some of the democrats don't feel he corn people are as important either. Hillary got back in after backing out of the Iowa straw vote because it looked bad and she dropped to third behind Edwards and Obama in the state.
Robert. Now, now, relax. Be secure in the corn. Remember, we've got it. Some people only have Dubya.

FYI, Jerry does not know what he's talking about. There is not Democratic Straw Poll. It is a GOP event to raise $$ in August. The CAUCUS is in January, and everyone is still going to work to win that. Romney was going to do very well in the straw poll. Rudy has rarely visted the state, McCain can't get more than 20% and immigration is killing him now. If Thompson joins the August event, it will still be very huge....in Iowa the race is between Mitt and the "real conservative" who the GOP has not found yet, but hopes will be Fred. McCain is done here and nationally. Rudy will fight to win the nom in the big Eastern states, and Mitt will fight Fred and the 3rd tiers for the conservative base. The real question is will Mitt have a keg at the August event or not??
remember corn people of Iowa, all that money you guys are going to make this year to make all those millions of gallons of ethanol. You will be in a higher tax bracket, have to pay more in taxes. Now the big question is, why vote for a liberal who will take away your hard earned money? Join the GOP and keep your taxes low and your profits high!

Seems to me like giving up. I wonder how their grassroots operations people feel after essentially giving up on Iowa? It appears the MSM is falling for the "strategic" explanation of dismissing the straw poll as irrelevant, when the real explanation is they're afraid of taking Romney on in Iowa. If they're this scared of Romney...watch out terrorists!
Seems to me the front runners are ducking out because they don't want a repeat of Utah, sure Utah is Mormon country, but Ron Paul placed second.  Maybe these two guys are more in sych with everyday americans than the news media is...Go Ron Paul - Live Free or Die
Ron Paul Will Win!   He wins them all, but it is funny how his name is not mentioned even at 1% here? The media is so full of lies; where have all the good people gone?
