Edwards on Paris Hilton

From NBC's Andrew Merten

Well, kind of ... After Edwards delivered a national security speech today, reporters asked him about ... Paris Hilton! Although he declined to comment on the heiress’s abbreviated incarceration, he did draw a parallel to his “Two Americas” stump speech about poverty.  Citing statistics on income disparity, he said, “That gap's not healthy. It's not healthy for our economy, it's not healthy for our democracy, and I think we need to do something about it -- without regard to Paris Hilton.”

In his speech, Edwards repeated his assertion that the “War on Terror” is nothing more than a political slogan, saying: “There's been a great deal of high-level rhetoric and not a serious discussion of what steps have to be taken to keep this country safe.” Explaining what he would do differently than the Bush Administration, he called for a more direct line of communication between the president and military leadership, with less filtering through civilian officials.

Speaking with reporters after his short speech, Edwards reiterated that he does not believe the country is safer from terrorism than it was before 9/11. He went on to distinguish himself from Democratic presidential opponent Hillary Clinton, saying: “ I also do not believe that we should be embracing essentially what the Bush Administration is saying -- when they say that America is safer.”

I know that this is off the topic but why in the hell are we concerned over a damned spoiled brat who can't keep her clothes on instead of focusing on our soldiers? I wish the media would quit oogling over a freaking slut!!!!!!!
First Read, I have compained several times about your almost invisible coverage of John Edwards.......since he scored very well in the last debates I guess he has forced you to give him more notice. Edwards will be the next president!
David, One can only hope you are correct. I'll work on his campaign in middle Tennessee, hope you'll do the same in east Tennessee! Then when the air clears, I'll work for whoever the Democratic nominee is. Hopefully this time the r's have so many others running they won't bother crossing over in my primary and choosing our candidate like they did in 2004.
[[After Edwards delivered a national security speech today, reporters asked him about ... Paris Hilton!]]... And that's the sort of question that makes people hold reporters in such high esteem. Who needs Hollywood gossip columnists when you've got serious news guys on the job?
Message be damned, that's one fine piece of writing about a Presidential hopeful and a meaningless rich girl. Not easy to bring the two together.
Why all the attention to Paris Hilton. Doesn't the second tier deserve attention? What about Lindsay Lohan or Britney Spears?
It appears to the Media of these United States, that the next President of the United States will be determined by both Republican and Democratic Candidates' views of the momentary incarceration of Paris Hilton. It follows suit, that the future VIce-President will be picked on his/her thoughts concerning Lindsay Lohan's Rehabilitation. The position of Secretary of State will be decided by possible appointees' views concerning the skinnier Olsen twin's problems with Anorexia.
Whoever asked that stupid question should be barred from any political event.
A rich, stupid drunk who's above the law? Paris for President!
Isn't it sad that the only press one of the most promising democratic candidates gets is either about his income, his haircuts, or what he thinks about this spoiled brat. POTHETIC JOURNALISM!!! Why doesn't someone ask him about his policy?????
Why don't we ask the bush boy what he thinks after all he has so much more in common with Hilton girl, he can relate I'm sure. Guess we gota wait till Paris is at least 40 before she settles down. Talk about a clone.........
I wonder how many of her cell mates have the same treatment? This is the rule of law?? If you're a spoiled rich kid you can do whatever. Edwards knows this is wrong. I just wonder how much worse this will make her drinking.
Whoever asked that question ought to be fired. I'm plain tired of stupid journalism. Leave the cute blonde tracking, missing and incarcerated, to Fox.
I think the deal with Paris Hilton is about a lot more than Hollywood gossip. It is about a travesty of justice, and I think a lot should be made of it. For the past two days the "news" media has allowed itself to come undone about the retirement of Bob Barker, (pronounced Byka). For two days they've had this crap in our faces. Now that is what belongs in the entertainment section. The Paris Hilton thing needs to be blasted in the news like the Lewinski hug, because that is news. The justice system just told us they don't give a piddle what we think, they're going to look out for the elite like they were designed to do. By god we ought to be marching in the streets all over the country, like we should have done when Bush stole the presidency. This is what I call oligarchy getting out of hand. Somebody needs to pay for this.
Are journalism schools to blame? Hmm, I wonder if Regent University has a journalism school and whether the so-called journalist came from there?
Reporters will stop asking dumb questions when they are no longer paid to amuse us. Besides Bill Moyers, I can't name one intelligent member of the MSM. What's funny is to watch them strut like Lindsay Lohan in their Jockey shorts. I'm old enough to have known Brit Hume as a sincere, earnest, ethical young reporter working for Jack Anderson. Now he's a rock and roll boy... turning tricks for Fox. But have you seen his new car... wow, dude!! Just like Paris, without the integrity.
Susan, I can answer that question for you very easily. because his policies include raising taxes and making it harder for people to pay their bills and a health plan that I am still trying to figure out the basics about and his defeatist attitude in Iraq. So the most interesting things about him IS his $400 haircuts and his 10% hold on a $500 million dollar sunken treasure and his going to a liberal think tank to learn about being poor when he was once poor himself. Thank you.
I do favor Edwards for the Presidency. If not him, then Biden. However, I don't feel quite comfortable with his attacking the so-called "War on Terror." While I do agree with him that the WOT as a political phrase, has been extremely abused, I do think that we are fighting against real terrorists, so saying that kind of implies that there are not terrorists out to get us. Maybe Edwards has spoken at length about this and I could just be responding to something taken out of context. I don't know.
This has got to be the first time I've agreed with Dave, TN! Asking about Paris Hilton was an obvious play to the cheap seats. Pity Edwards didn't ask the reporters who asked about Paris Hilton why they aren't asking him about Katrina recovery or some other substantive issue instead.
Great Britian no longer uses the phrase "war on terror."
jerry, are you saying that the liberal media by asking Edwards about some airhead, is helping him cover up substantive issues like his $400 haircuts? I like the part about not understanding his health plan. Does that imply that you understand the current health plan? Who writes your jokes?
Susan Jerry is right would you want a President that raised taxes on the working man and gave tax breaks to the rich and how about health care would you want a President that would sign into law a plan to give Billions to drug companies at the expence of our elderly and would you want a President that gives lip service to national security while letting millions of unknown people come across our borders, Billions of our tax dollars to disapear under the guise of protecting us from terrorist then vote for Jerrys's Boys for eight more years of Bush**
Sometimes I wonder; Jerry, is anyone living up there? Or is the gray matter so corrupt with Hannity and company that it can no longer think for itself? On the subject of journalism; it appears it is so adultered that it no longer exists. No substance, lack of investigative skills, useless.
WOW BOB???? ISn't that what we have right now???/ Did you vote for GWB??? Some times the hipocracy in here makes me laugh. At least Edwards is a self made man and didn't ride his daddy's coat tails or get in bed with the Saudi's.
Fox Noise is saying Edwards is using Paris Hilton's predicament for his benefit. Even though Edwards answered the reporter's question about Hilton by restating that there are two Americas and that the gap between the haves and have-nots is not healthy, without regard to Paris Hilton. Fox Noise says he is just eschewing hate toward her, but did we expect anything different from them? She is their darling now, because of the reporter's question.
