Gonzales

NBC’s Ken Strickland reports that the no-confidence vote on Alberto Gonzales failed, 53-38. Sixty votes were needed for the motion to proceed. Senator Stevens (R) voted present. The following seven Republicans voted with ALL Democrats in the symbolic no-confidence vote: Collins, Coleman, Smith, Specter, Hagel, Snowe, and Sununu. (Collins, Coleman, Smith, Hagel, and Sununu are all up Senate re-election in 2008.) Lieberman voted against the resolution with most of the Republicans.

Presidential candidates Biden, Brownback, Dodd, McCain, and Obama didn’t vote on the measure. The AP has the full roll call vote.

The New York Times: “Republicans who rejected the proposal offered little defense of Mr. Gonzales, but criticized the resolution as a politically motivated stunt and a waste of the Senate’s time. ‘If I were president, I would have asked Alberto Gonzales to resign as attorney general,’ George V. Voinovich, Republican of Ohio, said in a statement. But he said, ‘Today’s vote does nothing to rectify the current problem or ensure it doesn’t happen again.’”

The New York Daily News adds, however: “[I]t still forced Republicans into the uncomfortable role of challenging a statement most agreed with: that Gonzales is not competent to be the nation's top lawman.”

As for the future of the Gonzales probe, the Los Angeles Times notes: "Democrats vowed to continue their investigation into whether Gonzales, in tandem with the White House, had politicized hiring decisions and various investigations at the Justice Department in ways that would boost Republicans. There were signs that Democrats were on the verge of taking that investigation to a new level, possibly by issuing subpoenas to the White House for documents and testimony of such figures as political operative Karl Rove."

Still, it does appear that congressional Democrats are running out of ways to bring up the Gonzales situation in a public way, making it appear that the attorney general may have weathered this storm -- for now, unless something else comes out. Then again, Gonzales has already survived longer than many in this town expected.

But Gonzales and his Justice Department suffered this defeat yesterday. “The federal appeals court in Richmond, Va., ruled yesterday that the president may not declare civilians in this country to be ‘enemy combatants’ and have the military hold them indefinitely. The ruling was a stinging rejection of one of the Bush administration’s central assertions about the scope of executive authority to combat terrorism.”

If the Repuks would have had the guts to vote then maybe Dumbya would have been forced to change and then maybe not we don't know the answer to that question. Again answer this truthfully Would you hire an attorney who could not remember or recall details?
I shocked Schummer did not throw himself on the senate floor, wet his pants and howl at the moon. The one defining moment of his entire senate career was flsuhed down the toilet in a single vote. Don't worry chuckie, someday you'll find something to make a big splash on and you can make New York and yourself proud again.
Lieberman made a national name for himself with his moral condemnation of Clinton's relationship with Monica and subsequent lying about it. I wonder where Lieberman's moral compass is now that we have an AG who promotes torture, undermines the Geneva convention, uses the DOJ to prevent investigations into Republican corruption while firing US Attorneys who refuse to wrongfully prosecute Democrats, and then lies to Congress about it all. If Joe is such a moral leader, where is he now? Undermining the US Constitution is worse than having consensual sex (or does Lieberman disagree with that?)
Shumer is always trying to twist something around. Man the vote failed..Live with it. I dont blame Bush, I would not fire him either just because the Senate says so. Its a lot of people in the Senate on both sides that need to be fired also. I dont like a lot of people there and unfortunately we dont vote everyone into the Senate. All I worry about is what is my Senator doing. I could care less about Shumer's opinion.
They say Democrats have no guts. What about the gutless Republican Senators. What a joke!!!
Lieberman's moral compass points to Israel and supporting a President who favors bombing Iran.
Once again the "no confidence" vote on Gonzales shows that protecting the GOP party and the White House is the number one top priority of the Republicans. Even though most in both parties have no-confidence in Gonzales for his imcompetent handling and mismanagement of the attorney firings and the Department of Justice, the repub's voted no to stop the motion from proceeding. Lying and bending, if not breaking the law is OK, because they have to protect one of their own. Save for one (Orrin Hatch), none who spoke yesterday defended him or stated he should stay on as AG. When is the interests and views of what's best for America and its citizens going to be the top priority in the GOP decision making? This kind of blind, misguided loyalty has got to stop.
Don't worry, Jackson, I'm sure our senators voted along strict partisan (republican) lines. With them, Gonzales' incompetence and corruption are irrelevant.
Rob: Joe Lieberman is a complete scumbag. How did Al Gore ever select him ? Would Al have won with John Edwards as a running mate ? Robert Catalano: You're absolutely right !! Joe seems to be looking out for Israeli interests, only. When is his term over ?
Boy, I hate to speak well of Lieberman, but back in 2000 he was the toast of the town, and now he is just toast. He was added to Gore's ticket to remove some of the stink of Clinton's "immorality" (To borrow a phrase from Gonzalez, it was a "quaint" way of looking at the world). So Lieberman helped some, particulalry in Florida (that's why Gore actually won Florida - sort of). But his bizarre embrace of everything Bush including the immoral leadership of Gonzalez will be the way he is remembered and will discredit anything else he has ever done. History will judge him harshly as being a Bush apologist when the country truly needed moral leadership. He led on the wrong moral issue of his tenure, and is now exposed as a hypocrite.
I WOULD NOT HIRE GONZALES TO TAKE OUT MY GARBAGE, HE WOULD SURLEY "FORGET" WHERE HE PUT IT.
While this vote did get everyone on the record, it once again illustrated how feeble the Democrats are in attacking the Administration. Unfortunately our system requires 60% for a majority not the 51% that we have come to expect...too bad Bush ingnores the wishes of the majority. This vote was decided before it was taken...we all knew the end result. The Dems need to pick their battles more carefully...each time they go down on these issues by not getting the required 60%, they embolden the President more and more. Bush, Chenney, Rove and Snow are laughing at (and ignoring) the Senate. Come on guys...you need to pick the battles that you can win. While I applaude your efforts, I cringe at the results.
Sierra, six more years. You still have time to move to New Haven and make a difference. You can introduce gorrila racing to New Haven and get away from the pelosi crime family(now that Paul jr. has joined the firm).
jerry/corpus christi texas......A yes another man from Texas....The armpit of America.
ONCE AGAIN THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WILL TAKE A NO CONFIDENCE VOTE ON THE REPUBLICANS AND THE RESULTS WILL BE MUCH DIFFERENT. WHAT GOES AROUND ,COMES AROUND.
Well now that this dog and pony show is out of the way perhaps proper attention can be given to exactly why the dismissed prosecutors had refused to prosecute election fraud perpetrated by Democrats and also refused to indict known Coyotes in California. Perhaps they had reasons for shirking those responsibilities, if so lets hear them.
Purely symbolic. Complaining of it being "politics" always amuses me coming from a politician! The more exposure this congress can provide to the general public (not everyone is a political junkie) of the incompetence and immoral leanings of this GOP (uke) group in Washington, the better.
FL, please do not disparage all of Texas and Texans. If you'll notice, the most unapologetic screaming conservatives, other than Jerry, come from Tennessee and South Carolina. Not all southerners are rednecked "Bubbas" who like driving fast, open containers and exercising their god-given right to carry a gun under the seat of their vehicles. Believe it or not, I have actually met many Texans who have the ability to think and care more about helping others than frying them. Go to Austin sometime and it will change your opinion of the stae as a whole. As for Tennessee and South Carolina, well, the Smokies are nice and the magnolias still bloom amid all the nuclear waste and power plants. Just kidding...
AUSTIN!!!! LOL, in texas we call Austin the people's republic of Austin. It is a great city, 6th street and Guadalupe street in front of UT is where I hung out a lot in the 80's. They really care about their parks and thank god their thinking has not caught on to the rest of the state. You would think with all this liberal thinking, they would be leading the state. WRONG! The republicans run this state from the state to the local goverments. The little old grandma who said George H W Bush was born was a silver spoon in his mouth and got severaly whipped by his son, was the last liberal to win anything in this state. Because we texans(at least 70% of us) got smarter and now we enjoy a great life in this state thanks to the republicans. Republicans made this state safer by passing the castle law, Now I can shoot a perv and not worry about a waste of time and tax money in a grand jury and save the state millions of dollars in a trial, plus open up some room in our prisons for other crimes. God Bless texas and all she stands for!
Jerry, still proud of Tom Delay too? Your quote of Ann Richards was as incorrect as your reasoning. Texas politics is among the most corrupt in the country. I lived there for a year and couldn't wait to get back to civilization on the "left Coast".
Robert C, you said "Go to Austin sometime and it will change your opinion of the state as a whole." Not in my case. I enjoyed Dallas a couple of times, so I have good thoughts about the people and places there. But Austin? I have an ex-wife living there. No Thank You!!
Well, Jerry, I think you have summed it up quite well: 1) guilty until proven innocent, 2)shoot first and ask questions later, 3) defending lies is easier than admitting the truth. Last time, I looked, Texas`was still part of the United States and under the laws of the US Constitution. God Bless Texas and the people who stand up for what she believes in like the Dixie Chicks, Anne Richards, Nanci Griffith, and etc. Seems to me the rest of you have been duped by someone who has had a silver spoon in both his mouth and his nose, and acts as if he's one of you. I think Texas has been well represented by others in US history without having to say its favorite sons are a Maine rich boy who never succeeded at anything exept winning elections and an uneducated cockroach chaser who tried to turn Congress into the RNC.
So Ken all your EX'S live in Texas!
A couple of facts: 1. America has more people in prison, per capita than any other nation in the world. do Americans have less respect for the law or is there another answer? 2. Of prisoners executed in this country 1 in 3 are executed in Texas. Are Texans more prone to murder? I see jerry's posts and it answers some of these questions. Comments?
The only GOOD thing about Texas WAS Ann Richards. Keep your red ants and your God fearing people who can shoot "perv's", and your God awful redneck people who think PRISIONS SHOULD BE OPEN FOR CRIME!
Thank you, Robert, for your defense of us non-jerry Texans. After your words of support, our friend from the coast immediately reappeared with more of the usual. I've given up on arguing with him, and as long as he thinks I'm "wrong as usual", then I am assured that I'm right where I need to be, and I have a responsibility to defend the honor of Texas after the obvious damage being inflicted on it. Ken, my ex-wife lives out on Magus' left Coast, so I'll take Austin anytime, especially since I won't run into he who shall remain nameless.
I don't know about Austin but jerry is definately the poster boy for FUBAR.
I was young enough to remember Watergate. At the time, both Deomcrats and republicans came togethr and saw the lies and paranoia surrounding the Nixon Administration. Yesterday, there was a vote of no confidence about the Attorney General. the Republicans did not openly come to his defense but took the position of Senator Voinovich of Ohio who said it is up to the President. This division on the Gonzales case shows me personally one thing. I will not consider voting for a Republican candidate for any office unless they are willing to go back to their base and act like Senator Howard Baker. That is a Republican I admired.
Robert from Salem - you forgot the late Molly Ivins, also from Texas (I believe Austin); I always enjoyed her column.
Jerry is RIGHT about Ann Richards, but Im not gonna talk about that lady because she is dead. Texas is alright with me. By the Magus I happen to live in Tom Delay's district. Because of him the little towns of Sugarland, Missouri City, Richmond, Rosenberg and the rest of the district has experienced a tremendous growth to become the most affluent little cities in America. Before he was elected no one wanted to live out there without anything. Now you wouldnt know that area from Houston. Im glad your back on your beloved West Coast, we dont need you here either. Scott you need to start standing up for any Texan (George Bush and all) when someone that is from the rest of the country attacks. All these attacks on Texas, half of the people in America wished they lived in Texas. I have lived all over the world but there is none like Texas.
Yep, Jamie, sorry for not including Molly. As I said, there are and have been many good Texans who have given much to this country and worked, as well as gave their lives to uphold the Constitution. One, in particular, died next to me in a foreign jungle land while a future president was doing drugs and shirking his military duty.
Or to continue my Watergate saga, we had our then Pesident (Nixon), on his knees praying with Henry (Kissinger). And Alexander Haig saying he was in charge. So, fast forward, we have our current President (Bush), praying with Henry (Kissinger). who says I am in charge? (Cheney, my own personal opinion.)
Molly Ivins my hero! She could nail Georgie boy better than anyone. She named him the SHRUB and it lives on, thanks for your honest and stinging columns.
Please stay in Texas if you're there. If you wanna go and visit, please stay. Personally I have no desire to even look at it on a map, let alone visit. I flew in and over once, are there even any hills? I haven't lived all over but have traveled alot. I know who my ancestors are and when 1/2 came out west from Missouri in covered wagons. The other 1/2 have been from the state of Washington for over 150 years. I have no problem w/immigrants, I understand, I am liberal.
Hey Wayne, This pony show has not gone away and there are probably indictments coming real soon. The mostly republican AG's that were fired did refuse to prosecute some cases that were passon on to them by the RNC. Why, because they recognized them as BS that stunk so bad that they were not willing to risk their careers for partisan dirty tricks. As to real election fraud... this is what the whole DOJ situation is about. A lot of phony election fraud that the RNC was trying to perpetrate to cover the real fraud that they were committing. One of the "new" AG's even was brought in with the justice’s department’s knowledge that he was involved with caging. And the there is ACVR, the source for the information about voter fraud that was used to write all of the voter ID laws. Where are they today? How about their "founder" Thor Hearne? His buddy "Schlockman" sure put on a good presentation in front of the senate judiciary committee (opps, he may be indicted now too)... And it all leads to Rove and his long time masters... The sad thing is that so many people like you are too blind to see that you are the ones typically getting screwed by the very people you support. If you would ever see through the Bush BS, you would really be pissed… When the justice department is corrupt itself, there is NO justice…
Inthemiddle, I am standing up for Texas by disputing things said by other Texans. It should be obvious that other parts of the country are getting the wrong impression of Texas because of what some Texas residents say on this blog. I will not defend the indefensible just because the speaker lives in Texas. For instance, why would anybody believe that Delay had anything to do with Houston's suburban sprawl following U.S. 59, or that his obvious corruption should be excused?
Inthemiddle sounds like a Sunni who's surgin'
Scott in South Texas,I do listen to you.Thank you for speaking up for all Americans, regardless of the state they live in.
Q: What takes four days to drive to, but only two days to return home from?  A: Texas. May I never see it again.
GONZO GATE JUST DIDN'T GO AWAY WITH THIS VOTE. THERE WILL CONTINUED INVESTIGATIONS. DOESEN'T ANYONE OUT THERE WANT TO KHOW WHERE THE MISSING 5,000,000 MISSING E-MAILS ARE AT? I SURE AS HELL DO!!!!!
LOL, First Scott, If Tom Delay is so guilty and so ready to go to prison, why hasn't Ronnie Earle(the DA) gone to trial yet.  Because he knows he cannot win with the case he has!  There is no proof and all he is doing is making himself and the texas democratic look like a bunch of yokohama mama's.  The Magus makes me laugh.  What has been going on in California lately?  Gorilla racing, federal money to build subway stations next to earthquake fault lines(sounds like a bad aggie joke).  Paris Hilton, $10.00 cans of Folgers Coffee, $4.00 a gallon Gasoline, people who tell the federal goverment to go away and leave our strawberry pickers (I mean Illegal Aliens)alone.  Increased crime and increased property taxes and decreasing water supply and firestorms and people being dragged out of ambulances on skid row?  I could go on and on, that is the california dream.  No wonder more and more people are fleeing California for texas.  H P is just jealous because Boston is being taken over by street gangs made up of illegal aliens and the irish identity is slowly fading into  the wordwork in Boston.  One last thing, I noticed a lot of you liberals talk about your ex-wifes in here.  I guess i can dispense with tearing you family loving liberals any further.
Joe Bob
The Democratic Party dragged the state of Tennessee into the Confederacy by setting up a phoney referendum and embarking on the most massive and well documented campaign of voter fraud and intimidation in the history of the world prior to the Soviet Union and the pocket dictatorships like Saddam's Iraq. All this to negate the results of a prior and honestly run referendum in which Tennesseans rejected the Confederacy.

A Squad of Democrats went to the Ukraine supposedly to monitor elections there and consistently worked to cover up the massive voter fraud there, you may remember how that turned out.

Democrats are historically the worst offenders in voter fraud, and they most likely to make false accusations of same.

Pretending that a crime didn't happen does not make it go away, it encourages repeat performances.

Now I suppose we can expect another round of forged TANG memos and Downing street Memos (with originals carefully burned and out of focus photocopys of unrelated documents printed to give the impression of validity), complete with attempts to rewrite the dictionary to make the words fit a pre conceived notion.

One good thing about Global warming, perhaps enough of Canada will be free of ice to house the democrats who promised to flee to Canada in 2004, and will get another chance at it when they wake up to a new Republican Administration in 2008.

"Or to continue my Watergate saga, we had our then Pesident (Nixon), on his knees praying with Henry (Kissinger). And Alexander Haig saying he was in charge. "
Wasn't Haig's little Faux Pas in response to the Reagan assasination attempt?
Hate to post three times in a row but it just occured to me that there seems to be a drive to squash any investigation of voter fraud even though organizations like ACORn have already admitted to massive fraud perpetrated by their field agents durung the 2004 elections.
Its one thing to make a claim that there is less of a problem than news reports and indictments from 2004 seem to indicate but an article writen by Richard L Hansen , which I just read, shows a complete lack of candor. He seems to be trying to lull the public to sleep , with dreams of all going nicely.

In this state , in 2004, Democrats went so far as to spray the local Republican head quarters with 9mm rounds. It didn't do them much good since a large number of Democrats voted Republican, or didn't vote, that year because they despised John Kerry.
Around here Republicans don't win elections, Democrats lose them.

Considering that the Democrats spent more than a century burning crosses and lynching both Black People and White Republicans in order to disenfranchise Black Voters, this attempt by people like Hasen to open the flood gates for ever increasing attempts to subvert the Democratic process while at the same time claiming that measures taken to prevent voter fraud somehow Disenfranchise minority voters seems pretty lame.
Perhaps they are concerned about those people who still show up at the polls though they have been dead for decades.
Are Zombies now a Minority who's right to vote is somehow in danger?

It's like the old story about the elderly woman wishing to be buried in Chicago so she could remain active in the Democratic party.

Hasen's claim that no voter fraud problem exists should be looked at as a warning bell that it does, and likely will get much worse if the Democrats have their way.

As they say.
"The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist......."
Verbal Kint "the Usual Suspects"
jerry, thanx for the validation, and for proving my points, once again.
Johnny
"DOESEN'T ANYONE OUT THERE WANT TO KHOW WHERE THE MISSING 5,000,000 MISSING E-MAILS ARE AT? I SURE AS HELL DO!!!!! "
No need to shout.
Are you claiming you know where the "5,000,000" missing(if indeed they are missing or ever existed) Emails are?
Or are you saying you want to know?
If the latter I suggest you take a shovel to the lowest circle of hell and start digging, they should be just above Dan Rather's long missing journalistic Integrity.
Yeah Scott, somebody had to point out that Ronnie earle has no case to you.
Went right over your head, jerry, so I'll give you a clue.  The "validation" is in reference to one of my earlier posts where I stated that as long as you think I'm wrong, I know I'm right.  You just wish Ronnie Earle had no case.
THIS "GONZO GATE" IS NOT GOING AWAY, NO MADDER WHAT  YOU RIGHT WING IDIOTS THINK. THERE DEFINITLY ARE MISSING TREMENDOUS AMOUNTS OF E-MAILS ON THIS MADDER. IF IT TAKES FOR EVER TO GET TO THE BOTTEM OF THIS, THAN FOR EVER IT WILL BE ! THEY CAN CONTINUE TO SEPOENA. OUR VOICES WILL NOT BE SILENT ANY LONGER. THE ATTORNEY GENERAL IS A PUPPET OF THE FAILED BUSH ADMINISTRATION FIASCO.
Johnny Just us

Screaming and name calling will get you no where.
Exactly when have you people ever been "Silent"?

While the bizness as usual accusations and showboating of the Democrat hacks of the Senate have served them well in their efforts to dodge their responsibilities to a Nation at War, the people are getting a bit fed up with it. Thats "People" not Rosie O'Donell.

Last I heard the only one still trying to make a story out of the missing Emails was the Guardian, which is somewhere between Der Spiegel and Weekly World News in terms of Journalistic Integrity.
