Reid's criticism of Gen. Pace

From NBC's Ken Strickland
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid once again found himself on the defensive after calling the outgoing Joint Chiefs Chairman Peter Pace "incompetent" during a recent conference call interview with liberal bloggers. His comments were first reported by The Politico and confirmed by NBC News. Earlier this year Reid was criticized after saying "the war is lost."

At an on-camera news conference this afternoon on energy, Reid was showered with questions about the "incompetent" statement. Reid refused to repeat it, but also didn't deny he said it. "I'm not going to get into it, what I said or didn't say," he calmly told reporters, suggesting Pace's failure to be renominated to his position by Secretary of Defense Gates spoke for itself. "There's a long line of people who've indicated in various ways that General Pace was not the person to be the chairman on the Joint Chiefs. That's why name was pulled." Reid said in a private meeting with Pace he told him, "that he had not done a very good job... I told him that to his face."

Then more questions came from reporters trying to nail down the "incompetent" comment. "I think we should just drop it.  The fact is he's not going to be the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs for which I'm happy," Reid said.

Military officers now targets on Hill

Obviously, some Republican senators weren't happy with Reid. Former Armed Services Committee Chairman John Warner went out of his way to give reporters his thoughts. "I respectfully but very strongly disagree," Warner said. Republican Jim Bunning was more direct in his written statement: "The fact that Democrat Leader Reid would stoop so low as to insult our top military commanders in an attempt to gain political points with his liberal blogging friends is outrageous... Hurling stones at other politicians is one thing, but throwing them at the people who defend our freedom is another."

Pace put being a team player, for team Bushco not team America, above representing the armed forces at the table or considering the good of the country. He may have been competent at that goal but incompetent at giving good advice so everyone is right.
Senator Reid continues to reach new moral lows in modern politics and sets a poor example of leadership for Americans.  I couldn't agree with Senator Bunning's statement in that a military leader cannot speak out or defend him or herself against such personal and outrageous comments stated by a politically elected or appointed official.  Bottom Line: Senator Reid is a coward.
Typical Liberal. I cant believe he had the audacity to call a serving US General "incompetent". i wonder what the few soldiers that liked Reid say now. His true colors have shown. This man has contempt for the military. By the way what qualifies him to say a General is incompetent?
This is what happens when you back down to democrats. Way to go Gates and Bush. Stop wasting time trying to appease these scum bastards.
You are correct Reid, Pace is incompetment.  Do not

care that you are criticized, it is dammed if you do and dammed if you don't. Tell them BITE ME give them something juicy to talk about.
Gen Pace has had a stellar career up to the time he became JCoSC.  Dumbya's ability to ruin someone's career has been spectacular to say the least.  Being a team player for Dumbya is a career ender that's for sure.  As for Reid's comments truth hurts man.  Even for a Marine he should have seen the writing on the wall about this.
"Peter Pace is incompetent" ranks right up there with "the sky is blue" and "this spade is a digging tool". Reid wasn't pandering he was stating the obvious. Considering as he is the highest uniformed member of the armed services and he has backed cataclysmically bad policies in Iraq, what does he want? A cookie?!   That it hurts the Republican's feelings to have the truth pointed out to them is hardly the concern of the Democrats.
Pace was / is incompetant. That should be the story, not the fact that Reid called him incompetant.
Sometimes the media just totally blows it.
Smooth move, Ex Lax. Another blunder by Reid. A more polished approach would have been to handle the thing behind the scenes. Instead, Reid has turned a reasonable and, under the circumstances, appropriate action (preventing reappointment given the incredible mishandling of this war and Pace's slavish towing of the administration's political line) into a media circus where Reid risks looking like he's pandering to the extreme radical bloggers, a constituency with little to no appeal outside of, well, outside of the radical blogger community. Many Americans are uncomfortable with extremists of any political stripe (and rightly so, in my opinion). This foolishness just makes the Dem Congress look like it's even further in the radical Left's pocket and gives the Right cover to obfuscate the greater issue of the handling of the war. It makes this all more partisan and political.
The Democrats battle cry "When you have no position or want to win a position simply speak loud and demean a person and all the other Democrats will follow". There is a reason why this kind of behavor has been rare in the history of Congress. But we of this "enlightened" age are so much smarter then those that have served in Congrees in the years past.  Right!
YEAH Reid tell them bite me and blow me.  They are toast who care what they say. You can not let the rebugs and the reporter push you around.
The conduct of the war speaks for itself, along with the fact that they're having trouble finding generals who are willing to drink the Kool Aid and toe the neocon line.  No doubt Pace did it to have "Chairman" on his resume, too bad for him.  The best fighting force in history is losing personnel, prestige, and fighting power thanks to incompetent leadership at the top of our government.  It's past time to stop.
The old red herring rises again. Criticise anything about this war effort and you are unpatriotic and don't care about the troops. Fortunately all but about 35% of the public is finally getting wise to this BS. Please, someone on the right tell me what the strategy is for success. You can't, because there isn't one, because you can't even agree on what success looks like. And that being the case you are leaving American heroes in harms way because you are too proud and stubborn to admit you don't know what you are doing and you think if you wait long enough some miracle will happen and Muslims will reverse a thousand years of societal chaos that you somehow missed in your history books. Wat to support the troops you Patriots you.
Harry Reid is a Copperhead, pure and simple.
Reid's supporters are simple Copperheads and partisan obstructionists.
They fear a successful solution to Iraq only because a Republican Administration is in charge. The same sort of thinking which led to denying funding for US air support of the South Vietnamese long after our ground forces had left that country and the South Vietnamese were holding their own. allowing the North Vietnamese to bring in Soviet Armor to crush the South Vietnamese resistence produced what is still the greatest refugee exodus in modern history.

Look at "Bloody Murder Murtha" for example, he thinks that support missions in Iraq can be flown from Japan. Does he own a map? Does he have any idea how many mid air refuelings such missions would require?
All he's interested in is fat contracts for new submarines to be built in his district by companies that contribute to his campaigns.
Perhaps he thinks submarines are the best weapon for battling Islamist Extremists hundreds of miles from any shoreline.

Whenever a Jihadi sees someone like Reid crying that the war is lost this strengthens their resolve. Battles are won with steel, wars are won with will.
Earlier this year Reid was criticized after saying "the war is lost."

What he actually said was: "As long as we follow the President’s path in Iraq, the war is lost. But there is still a chance to change course and we must change course. No one wants us to succeed in the Middle East more than I do. But there must be a change of course. Our brave men and women overseas have passed every test with flying colors. They have earned our pride and our praise. More important, they deserve a strategy worthy of their sacrifice."
Hey, panty-twisted neocon "scum bastards": Bush is incompetent. Get all foamy over that.
The picture I have of General Pace is standing besides Rummy and agreeing with everything he said.
It was Rummy that told Pace he could not longer talk directly to the president (Rummy would do the talking.  That should have been resign time. Reid is right!
Wayne, how can the Democrats obstruct the successful solution to Iraq when even the President can't tell us what that looks like?  At what point were the South Vietnamese holding their own?  They didn't care enough about their puppet government to fight for it, just like the Iraqis.  Afterward the Domino Effect turned all of Southeast Asia communist, right?  WRONG.  Do you really believe the Iraqis that become Jihadis after years of cowering in their homes while the battle rages all around with no electricity or water are paying much attention to what Senator Reid said today?  We've destroyed their country and we have no intention of rebuilding it.  THAT is what will strengthen their resolve.
Its funny that Reid gets attacked by the media more for stating a truth than Pace gets for being incompetent. Is anyone really going to argue that the attack on the Iraqi people is competent?
Marc. This is incorrect.Your Reid statement was a self- clarification of the original Reid comments he made to AP reporters immediately[12-15 minutes]before returning to the Senate floor and delivering his ''as long as we follow the presidents path''to hook to his original ''war is lost comments''.The AP caught it,so did ABC NEWS and CSPAN, as did the Boston Globe[all for Apr.20,2007]So did Reids hometown Las Vegas Review-Journal which has now observed that Reids numbers are the lowest in his political history now dipping below 19%.The hypocrisy we have here is that Murtha proponants blasted GOP members who did not serve for going after a mere Marine major who had not been in uniform for decades, who now back a non-serving Reid for piling on to a currently-serving,highly combat-decorated four star general.[and this,at the very moment we have found that Reid has placed at least two of his sons on a taxpayer payroll acting as property wheelerdealers for the Vegas strip on lands still owned by the feds[BLM],Reid, being the Chairman of the powerful Energy Committee. see:The Center for Responsive Politics www.opensecrets.org].Reids crookedness is rapidly catching up to his own incompetence.
Fact: our troops were using unarmored vehicles in Iraq and were being devastated by IEDs. Fact: half of the equipment belonging to the National Guard has wound up in Iraq, with no replacement gear forthcoming, resulting in the Guard's inability to respond adequately to disasters on the home front.  Fact: Pace failed to lead in equipping his soldiers at home and overseas, and failed to lead by questioning the obviously failed strategy in Iraq. He offered no alternative military strategy, but instead deferred to Rumsfeld and Gates.  Harry Reid simply stated the obvious - the man was/is incompetent and Bush's failure to renominate him simply enforces that fact.
He sure did heck of a Job, that Pace.
If we reflect on the many decent Generals that have
left the Iraqi scene, we have to undertand that the
real problem is not with the Military Brass, but with
our little weasel in the White house. the conditions in Iraq are very explosive, and nobody in their right
mind would want to stay. Our soldiers are being killed
daily, but Mr. bush sits back in the white house unconcerned, Playing the part of a Macho Mouse.
Way to go Harry buddy. Keep telling the truth and the republicans will all begin to have seizures and strokes.
People Please!  As an active Marine officer, General Pace does not make or allowed to publically critize foreign policy.  His job is to try to implement it the best way he can.  Please stop using him as the whipping boy for your frustrations with the Bush Administration.  Harry Reid should keep his comments about any of the troops to himself.
Democrats ,, babbling out of date idiots.. You want incompetent,,Harry Reid is the leader of flip flopping bungling. These homeseaders have realy screwed American reality. Everyday we have to listen to this democratic Bull sh--. We are sick of it and their selfserving domains. Hey , Media Paris hilton is more inportant than listening to a babbling idiot!!!  The a-- holes have to keep covering their own self serving failed a--es!!!  Shut the f--- up Reid!!!!
Surely, if our president felt General Pace should keep his job, he would kept his name in for the confirmation process. He always seemt to remain loyal to team players. Did Secratary Gates have a larger part in the decision then we are led to believe?I was very suprised to see General Pace sidelined.
Puta big red nose on this clown,,  He is Hillary's right hand clown,, The clown leader.. The Idiot doesn't know how to keep his big mouth shut.. Go back to Vegas and play the craps,, ""because you have rolled snake eye's here.
Senator Reid may very well be correct that General Pace is "incompetent" however I still hold out hope that he is just doing what he has to do as a military man in a horrible political environment. As for the troop surge, it was a brilliant idea.... trouble is that it was about 2 years too late! Two years ago, the situation in Iraq could hardly be considered a civil war (as if any war is civil) but now the 2 primary factions in that lost country have made sure with the assistance of neighboring countries. Of course, how could we have possibly expected this president and his administration to have handled the lead-up to full scale civil war? Look at the president's position on issues in OUR country! Open borders? How could President Bush win a war in Iraq when one of the keys to a victory would be to shut down the Iraqi border with Iran? This man can not... correct that, WILL not secure OUR border here in the United States to stop the invasion from Mexico and the assault on our economy and social services. Well, well, there you have it. Shut down the Iraqi border with Iran and a troop surge 2 years ago (of possibly 100,000 troops) and we might be talking about victory in Iraq, a friendly, stable country in the middle-east, and our proud soldiers would be home now. General Pace might or might not be "incompetent", but the administration sure as hell is! Oh, and for all of you "way out to the right" folks, please know... I supported and voted for George W. Bush. I have supported him and this "incompetent" administration for the first 4 years. Now my eyes are open. With my experience with the military, and the obvious nature of how the White House conducts business these days, I can not as a person of conscience blindly support these people any more.
"Wayne, how can the Democrats obstruct the successful solution to Iraq when even the President can't tell us what that looks like?  At what point were the South Vietnamese holding their own?  They didn't care enough about their puppet government to fight for it, just like the Iraqis.  Afterward the Domino Effect turned all of Southeast Asia communist, right?  WRONG.  Do you really believe the Iraqis that become Jihadis after years of cowering in their homes while the battle rages all around with no electricity or water are paying much attention to what Senator Reid said today?  We've destroyed their country and we have no intention of rebuilding it.  THAT is what will strengthen their resolve. "
The South Vietnamese held out for over two years after the last American Ground Forces withdrew.
"27 Jan 73 - Official end of the Vietnam War.   Between 27 Jan and 29 Mar 73, a total of 587 military and civilian prisoners were released by the North Vietnamese, and during that same period, 23,500 US troops were withdrawn from South Vietnam

29 Mar 73 - 67 more US P.O.W.'s were freed in Hanoi. The same day, the US withdrew its remaining 2,500 troops from South Vietnam. This date also marked the actual end of military involvement in Vietnam.

"
"9 Mar 75 - A major offensive begins against South Vietnam with an attack on Ban Me Thuot in the Central Highlands.  South Vietnam fell in 55 days.

"
As for the "Domino Effect" North Vietnamese attempts to conquer the rest of Southeast Asia were stymied by the losses they incurred during the Vietnaman war and loss of Marxist Red China as a sponsor after North Vietnam chose to snuggle up to stalinist Moscow.
So the Vietnam War did in fact prevent success of the Domino effect.
In a falling out among thieves, North Vietnam did invade Cambodia of course , but was unable to seriously threaten Thailand, and is still involved in supressing the Montanards.

As for Iraq the only people working to destroy that country are al-Qu'ida and the Sunni Insurgents, two factions now at each other's throats at least temporarily.
Successful conclusion will come when Iraq's Armed Forces can handle security on their own, with limited US and UN involvement.
Since Iraqi Enlistments are up lately due to coalitions of Tribal leaders throwing their support to the Government the goal seems attainable.

I think Dingy harry has spent too much time in the nevada sun, making those sweetheart land deals.  No wonder President Bush has higher poll ratings then this four eyed mornon.  He is the ultimate flip flopper of the democratic party.  Earlier this morning he was in a meeting with liberal bloggers.  They must have followed Don Corleone's lead and left a horse head in his bed as a reminder to make sure that he stays true to the Moveon.org and pink broads lead on talking about the war.  This happened the last time he met with the liberal bloggers.  You libs must have a picture of him doing something disgusting to get him back in line like this.
Which part of WMD, dead or alive, shock and awe, mushroom clouds, regime change, last throes, foreign fighters, purple fingers, follow us home, democratic government, stable democracy, stay the course, turn the corner and Defeatocrats don't you liberals understand?  Can the Republemmings possibly make it any clearer? The Shrub-in-Chief Rules!  Long live the Shrubbery!
David Adams: Fact in Iraqui Freedom I we had our regular HMMV's simply because that is what the military was equipped with. The IED came about from Iran to which helped those insurgents adapt to be able to inflict a LITTLE damage to us. ALL armies adapt to what the enemy is doing so we adapted and received up-armored HMMV's.
Fact: Everyday each learn of the other's weakness. ALL armies have some weakness. You adapt and overcome.
Fact: If you have ever read a national guard/reservist enlistment contract you will see in paragraph 2, line 6 it states that in the time of a national emergency DECLARED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES as such may/may not be called upon to serve in the volunteer regular army for a period as to be determined.
FACT: 35% of the total natl guard is presently deployed of which 10% of that is in Bosnia/Herzgovenia
FACT: The natl guard individual units are responsible yearly for submitting a report to the Pentagon as to readiness (We all know these documents are consistently forged)so when its time to go what do you expect. By the way half of the reserve units dont even physically report to drill so what do you expect.
FACT: Pace is a military general with a chain of command above him.(Rumsfeld) We in the military follow orders. This is not a democracy. That is why the military operates so well. Dissention will get ur azz killed.
FACT: Harry Reid has no military credentials tha I know of to be able to make a statement about a General. He says stupid shyt like that because he knows that General wont respond to that simple BS.
Givem Hell Harry.
If George rearranges the deck chairs often enough he will finally find someone who agrees with him.
A Dubya appointee incompetant?? NO! Really?? How did this happen? After all, GWB has been masterful at surrounding himself with capable and competant aides, advisors and agency heads...Brownie, Rumsfeld, Scooter, Harriet, Paul Bremer, the list goes on
Pace as angered me many times by sticking his nose into the political arena, instead of military matters were it belongs. Our military must remain impartial and non-political, not just talking heads for the neocons or anyone else. That being said, Reid stated the obvious, but was wrong. He should understand when he is playing into the Reps hands. The story would have centered on Pace and the conduct of the war...but Reid had to open his big mouth. The Dems need to pick their battles...not creat them where none exist. Even the kool-aid drinkers are abandoning ship, and it doesn't help to give out the ammunition to keep them onboard.
Realy mad, AZ - the voice of the Bush republican. Thank you - keep posting.
Peter Pace's timidity before civilian leadership at the Pentagon and the White House demonstrates his incompetence as primary military advisor.  This failure is significant to the inadequate support for troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and for the loss of capacity and preparedness of the military as a whole.  Harry Reid himself is not competent as Senate Majority Leader.  He is whiny, weak, and ineffective, in the Daschle tradition, at a time when Democrats, Congress, and the country need wise and fearless leaders.  Mr. Reid should step down or be replaced as Leader.
Nobody but the media and conservative talk radio will care about his comments...average joe america could care less. Even I barely know who Pace is..outside of his last name. But Reid is a grouchy old man who probably moderates himself on a daily basis. But the his basic analysis is correct but for the wrong reasons. Pace was following orders, generals rarely rebuke their leaders....as incompetent as their leaders may be.
H.R. McMaster, a combat veteren of the Gulf War and the Iraq War, who is still on active duty and might be a one-star by now, wrote a book about the Joint Chiefs during the Vietnam War.  This officer, who is also a highly educated military historian, was sharply critical of the JCOS for their failure to stand up to the incompetent and misguided civilian leadership, and for their acquiescence in allowing, and participation in creating, a national catastrophe.  The book's title is "Dereliction of Duty".  From watching Myers and Pace over the last four years, it's deja vu all over again.
The buck stops at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave
already the repubs are losing their minds, bleeding from their noses and tops of heads are exploding!
Now we have liberal officals in Miami trying to suppress free speech.  They want to take Rush and hannitty off the air in case of emergency and the goverment has to broadcast news about hurricanes.  This is why liberals are so stupid.  Do you honestly think while there is an emergency they will continue to broadcast rush and hannitty????  LOL, Susan, your town needs an ennema.  From having the most road rage people in the country to having liberal officals that are making themselves look like fools each and every day, Miami is showing why they are the Los Angeles of florida
Pace was too busy worrying about the gays to pay any attention to the war.Another one of the Bush psycopaths.
Hey Jerry, quit sucking the salt water down there in Corpus and trying to breathe from your back side. Oh, I'm sorry, it's not the salty gulf you got your head stuck in, it's Limbaugh's enormous posterior!!! Dang man, do you vacation in Jonestown or what? Quit drinking the wacko cool-aid. No Reid is no saint, I don't even like him in particular. But listening to wacko nazis like Limbaugh (I know you do after calling him dingy harry) makes you just as much of a far out wack as Reid and the far left of the Democratic party. Come on man, you're from Texas. You have to be smart enough to see that this Republican administration has screwed things up worse than any other administration... Republican or Democratic. Here is just a little advice Jerry, from a real Texan, turn off Limbaugh, Hannity, and Levine and take the time to DO SOME RESEARCH before posting quotes from the far right radio Nazis!
Your starting to turn me on again Jerry..are you all sweaty?
JEERRYY...Hmm I noticed you spelled enema wrong- freudian slip perhaps.
Susan, if you take into account Jerry's obsession with John Edwards' $400 hair cut... Hmmmmm. Enema happy and Edwards obsessed. Somebody has a crush!
Listen, jerry - I want you to know that if Texas wants to secede from the union and become a republic again, or whatever, you have my total support with one caveat - because we stole it from Mexico, they might want it back (I know! God knows why!) in which case you're on your own. And don't expect an open border or entry priveledges.
