Dispatch from the AFSCME forum

From NBC's Andrew Merten and Jenny Anzelmo
Five of the Democratic presidential candidates just finished addressing AFSCME here in Washington, focusing  on union-centric topics such as collective bargaining, health care, and trade. Moderator Chris Matthews also solicited responses on subjects from national security and immigration reform to Scooter Libby.

Although each candidate spoke about their pro-labor views and received enthusiastic responses from the nearly 2,000 person crowd, there were some differences in their messages for the union members. Richardson touted the creation of a federal 401(k) plan to ensure that workers aren't left without pension, while Kucinich said that he would forbid company mergers if protection of pension plans could not be guaranteed. While Kucinich went on to say he would cancel NAFTA, calling it a "race to the bottom for wages," Clinton took a more moderate approach -- acknowledging the flaws of the agreement but attributing the problem of outsourcing to other issues.

VIDEO: Sen. Clinton addresses issues such as universal health care and the job market at the AFSCME Forum.

Obama echoed Clinton's views on trade, saying, "We should want to make the lives of other people in other countries better because it's good for our security." But he decried the outsourcing of jobs to cheap labor markets like China's.

While all the candidates were warmly received by the crowd, the award of strongest applause was certainly a toss-up between Clinton and Obama -- although Edwards certainly made attempts to connect with the audience by stressing his ties to the labor movement. Clinton also met with a very interactive audience, especially during a moment when she was asked by Matthews about whether Libby should be pardoned. As Clinton danced around the topic, people in the first few rows of the audience intervened, pressing Matthews to ask a "real question" about issues that actually affect them. She then went on to field questions about labor organization freedom.

I'm glad the audience spoke up and said it wanted real questions asked. Everyone is sick of this media and it's stupid preoccupations.
We all need to stop kidding ourselves, Kucinich IS the only candidate who stands up for workers!

How can the economic bottom 80% of this country get behind anyone who wont get rid of NAFTA?!?!
It is shocking that she would have to think about a no-brainer such as pardoning Libby. I hope to hear some clarification as to what was going on in her mind since she never got the answer out. On the other hand, we should not be focusing on divisive litmus tests thought it is beyond me how someone would want to pardon a felon against all dept. of Justice guidelines.
please save me from politicians who think they know what's best for us in spite of polls that indicate what we want. the gop supports a war we clearly don't and the demos support a immigration bill the mainstream is clearly against. we heard obama speak against outsourcing of us jobs and support a bill that provides insourcing by immigration. this bill merits jobs skills and education in direct competition with current citizens yet we kind of skip that issue in addressing the unions.let's all start shouting my slogan, "stop the insourcing of our outsourcing" and kill this bill.
MSNBC is sooooo biased in favor of Clinton.  There was NO toss-up between Clinton and Obama in applause.  Clinton received the most laughter in her fight with Matthew, refusing to answer the Scooter Libby question directly.  Obama clearly received the most and loudest applause.  That was acknowledged by your on-air talent.
If Clinton bash er Chris Matthews was the moderator I can imagine how that interview went. I watch him on hardball once in a while. If the conversation isn't going the way he want it to he talks over the people until it does. If the interview still isn't going his way he gets atrabilious.
Chris matthews, what a joke!  Ol' softball strikes again.  I understand what Chris is doing, he doesn't want to look like he is being tough on the democrats which goes to show why they need to re-name the show "softball".  let's get some people in there who will really ask the serious questions and not the fluffstuff famously asked by Chris Matthews, he is becoming a joke to MSNBC.
I do believe EVERYTHING is made in China!  China's products are unregulated and unsafe. Food is a big concern as it is also not inspected. WE are being put at risk but on the bright side it is CHEAP.
No need for DR. Kevorkian, China will do the job of early demise.
Obama is improving..and it is apparent he will become a leader in the democratic party, much to my satisfaction. I hope even if he doesn't win nomination he doesn't get swept under a rug like the Democrats often do to their former canidates.
Let's stop TALKING ABOUT the candidates and talk about what they are TALKING ABOUT.
Issues, we need to discuss the issues.
A full day of something that's supposed to be special coverage and is really a cheap continuation of the 'no coverage' coverage that's been provided by the 'news' networks for the past ten years. The public gets no information about what is happening in the world except for less than an hour a day on CNN unless they actively look for international news on the internet.  If MSNBC is just going to continuously report polling results and then do the conversations with talking heads on each candidate (only about the polling results), how is the American public supposed to become informed about the candidates' various positions on the real issues, like foreign policy, health care reform, trade policy reform, immigration, and national security?  We aren't even hearing about the candidates of substance, only the ones with the polling results -- that's how this country ended up with this idiot in charge.  I'm disgusted with your failure to provide information or news to your viewers -- 24 hours a day of nothing.   To your credit, at least you didn't devote another day of 'news' coverage to someone famous for violating probation.

The way Matthews smears Hillary everynite on Hardball was interesting to see if he would blast her(by spitting)  thought she held her own and the audience was ready for Matthews. But why Matthews---not hardly unbiased with his remarks about how sexy and handsome Bush and Thompson are.Creepy
Wow Carole you are right...cable news has largely been a failure in those regards. It's moved more towards tabloid television rather than where gov officials stand on issues. I could care less about poll data.
Wow!  another MSNBC article with video and pic of Hillary - but NO OTHER candidates. Shocking! ;>
MSNBC and NBC have crowned Hillary as prez. Oh sure - there are some hits, but most of them are accompanied by comments of her appearing "presidential", "strong woman" and what to call the male spouse of a female president.

Why wouldn't Hillary answer the question - would she pardon Scooter Libby?  He lied to a grand jury - several times.
Probably because Libby was Marc Rich's attorney.

I think that the candidates will not answer any questions in a way that the public would like them to do for the present.  Both parties candidates will not get too specific until December and the presidential primeries are only a couple months away.
Let's stop talking about what the candidates say, and start talking about what they've actually done when they've had some power.  Talk is cheap.  Actions speak louder.
Lying to a grand jury is a bad thing?
I was at the forum and Hilary is running off the coat tail of her hubby.  That's not a bad thing but enough with the name dropping and get a fresh breathe of air in the seat.  Obama!!!!!!

I was at the conference, Rejuvenated for the election 2008!  Went in thinking Obama or Clinton, departed leaning towards an Edwards/Clinton ticket.
