From NBC's Kelly O'Donnell

Next week, Fred Thompson hits the road with stops in Tennessee, South Carolina and New Hampshire. The South Carolina and New Hampshire visits are sponsored by the GOP state parties. But advisors say nothing is on Thompson's calendar beyond next week.

Aides say Thompson will be on the trail for two and a half days and "he'll get out a bit." They acknowledge he hasn’t been to the two early primary states much because "until now he hasn't had to."

His objective is to introduce himself to voters, meet the grassroots types and "get the message out." As of this writing, there are no Fred fund-raisers on this round.

Thompson is expected to deliver his stump speech which is still undergoing "tweaks." The message themes include: government competency, cutting taxes, "doing the right thing in Iraq" and "looking at the world in a different way." Advisors say the speech was written by Thompson since he has no official speechwriters in the fold. He was given some "structure" help by advisors who do have some writing background.

Advisors say although the Thompson team has a relationship with a pollster, a source says no polling or focus groups have been done yet unlike other campaigns. Advisors say the pollsters have other commitments they are wrapping up and the team has not firmed up what issues they want to take into the field. It could be weeks until they begin.

Advisors say two big jobs need to be filled. They need a Finance Director and Political Director. Others involved are handling those areas/tasks now and aides say it's "working." They are still at a stage where some titles and job descriptions have not been sorted out. They have added a "few low-level support people" and are bringing on communications help.

All still mum on the money raising results of the First Founders Group, a team of fund-raisers. Aides say they want to see the whole month of June's tally before they assess.

The pendulum theory. Campaign that your strengths include whatever shortcomings exist currently. Competency is a winning theme this time around. And a new approach to foreign policy, that goes without saying.
How old is this Cheney look-alike?
A lot of people are saying Fred is getting in too late... but if you look at the history... everybody else is getting in too early... I think people are Rudy'd and Romney'd and McCaine'd out already... if they're not... they will be by January... but Fred will come along here in a few weeks as a Fresh alternative to the months of bickering we've already seen... a smart move by Fred... hope he keep thinking one step ahead of the others!
Why is the press spending time with this guy?

His "campaign" illustrates his lazy attitude that was very evident during his lackluster term as a senator. There are other republicans who deserve the coverage.

Mr. Thompson has nothing to recommend him other than a mellifluous voice. I cannot believe that anyone would seriously consider voting for him.

Covering him is a waste of the time that the press could certainly use more productively.
H P Boston, that's cold
His semi-celebrity status is the only thing Thompson needs in his resume to pick up whatever is left of the Bush voter base. He will have a lot more trouble in his attempts to reel in higher vertebrates. America's moron community seems to be checking in at roughly 13% of the total voter population. A somewhat larger slice of the Bush base seems to have vowed not to be fooled again. At any rate, Thompson will be going after voters residing on the southerly half of the IQ scale, which includes the never again types in the 90 to 100 bracket.
fred old worn-out has been  certainly not fresh.
Knowing what we know about Dubya, it wouldn't take much to 'look at the world in a different way'.  Sounds like Fred is assuming we're simpletons.   Then again, maybe we are?
I still do not get it. He is the "None of the Above" republican candidate.
There just ain't any THERE-THERE!!
WHY do we keep reaching in the recycle bin for these guys?
WHY do we keep reaching in the recycle bin for these guys?
As scary as it may sound, Steve Turner Cedar Falls Iowa, we may be simpletons. Look at how many have blindly embraced him. He does not bring the Law and Order cast with him but some think that he will deliver as he does on the program.
Fred Thompson is not as conservative as the right wingers pushing him think. Also women do not like token wives. Fred has children older than his wife. Do you honestly think women will vote for him knowing that this is what our First Lady would look like? See for yourself:  http://www.redkingpix.com/cgi-bin/ImageFolio4/imageFolio.cgi?action=view&link=Celebrities&image=042906Thompson.jpg&img=0&search=Jeri%20Kehn&cat=all&tt=&bool=phrase
Fred's birthday is 8/19/1942.  Not as old as some that are running
"Higher vertebrates?" That kind of Arrogance and talking down to the American People bit the Democrats on the butt in two consecutive Presidential elections, if they keep it up they will lose another. If Thompson has a strong speaking skill it is a strength to be considered. Remember when Al Gore was so confident he would beat Bush in the debates, and he ended up destroying himself?  Underestimating an opponent or talking down to the voters would be foolish errors for anyone running for office. Thompson is playing to his strengths and speaking to the America people as intelligent adults. More politicians should do that instead of recycled decades old talking points and treating the people like dummies who just fell off the turnip truck instead of hard working, well informed voters.
Steve Turner, I still say the fix is in for Fred (do not say I have non-Hodgkins lymphoms) Thompson. It will be the continuation of the lies and deceit of this administration.Or to borrow a song from Still Crazy-"You Aint Seen Nothing Yet"
It would appear that the Republicans have looked at their ten candidates and have decided it is time to put in a call to central casting for a nominee!
Fred, if nominated, will beat Mrs. Clinton, if nominated, in a walk.
Mmmm Fred is 65 , Looks like death. Needs more makeup..best take his makeup person with him from L&O.
I think just about the only person the Republicans could nominate who couldn't beat Hillary is the only person in the country with higher negatives - Barry Bonds.
Not only will he not be taking the case of Law & Order with him...he won't be taking the writers either.  I'm tired of this will he or won't he coverage; if you are going to bother covering the guy, at least tell us what he stands for.  It means nothing to me where he is going to be or who he is going to be speaking to if I don't know what he thinks.
David Powell - I assume your definition of "intelligent adults" would include yourself. The voter base that got Bush elected in '04 has dwindled to about 35% of the voting population. 13% of all voters are people who strongly support Bush - those who voted for Bush twice and would do it again, AKA morons. They belong to Thompson free of charge. The other 22% of that 35% are people of modest intelligence, who were fooled once and maybe could be fooled again and maybe not. Another 64% disapprove of Bush. Thompson will encounter slim pickings from this bunch. 45% of these strongly disapprove of Bush. They, (we), consider him a liar and a fool, and those who voted for him, just fools. I doubt if Thompson could pry more than two or three percent of this 64% loose with a crow bar. I figure if enough voters are stupid enough to end up with Thompson as the Republican to beat, he can pull in about 33 to 35 percent of the vote. That group is what I refer to as lower vertebrates. Most of the 64% above wouldn't crossbreed with one of these trogs for big money. The 45% who strongly disapprove of Bush would probably vote for any Democrat before they would vote for any of the Repub candidates. My guess is that you would be very unhappy in a room full of these people. All but a smattering of people who voted for Bush in '04 were of average intelligence, 100 IQ, or below. Those who no longer approve of him belong to the top 15% of that group. Not the middle 15%, not the bottom 15%. Stated another way, those who deserted Bush came from the smartest of his one time supporters. The bill is coming due for the rest of them.
This is what George Will (that well-known liberal) had to say about Fred Thompson, "So far, he's 99% charm and 1% substance."  Check out his brutal cutdown of Thompson (as only George Will can do) in his recent Newsweek column:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19140623/site/newsweek
Sorry Republicans, Fred Thompson ain't your answer either
Hello, my "fellow" Americans. I just wanted to take a moment to connect with you sheep and talk about my campaign strategy.

Yes, it's true I come off the Rudy McRomney assembly line, but mindless flag-wavers are building me up as a "conservative" savior. So, I'm thinking that I'll just keep modestly brushing aside comparisons to Reagan. Brilliant, eh? The funniest part of it is, most Republicans considering themselves conservatives don't even realize that the Founding Fathers would never have supported Reagan, much less me. They'd probably have us both tarred and feathered. Of course, all that Constitution stuff is quaint, but what did they really know anyway?

Hell, I'll say it, I don't care what you people think. Why, you ask? Well, because mainstream media dittoheads are lavishing all their attention on worthless candidates like me. As long as they ignore substantive candidates talking about important issues faced by this country, all I have to do is sit back and act Presidential. Of course, I am an actor, so it's cake! Then, come votin' time the masses will simply cast their ballots on name recognition and the "seems good" factor. Thanks MSNBC!
Just what we need - another actor.  Complete with the trophy wife.

He Voted to allow firms to lay off Americans to make room for foreign workers in 1998!!!

He Voted to kill programs that were intended to assist employers in verifying whether people they had just hired had the legal right to work in this country!!!!!

Sen. Thompson, in committee consideration of S.1664 protected businesses from having to pay higher fines when they are caught hiring illegal aliens!!!!

Voted to grant legal status to Nicaraguans and Cubans who had lived in the United States illegally since 1995, along with their spouses and minor unmarried children. The overall ten year impact of this legislation will be the addition of some 967,000 people to U.S!!!

A VOTE FOR FRED IS A VOTE FOR AMNESTY!!!
Is this the best you libs can do. His wife is to young, he looks old, were gonna get him, hes lazy,,,,,,give the lefty whining a rest! If I had to pick one person to look the arab "Hitler" in the eye and make the world clear to him, it certainly would be Hillary, or Jonny E, or any of the other defeatest you love so much. Learn how to promote YOUR pick, not show your ignorance by whinning about others.
Jeff Wilson honey, YOU'RE the one thats whining. Your party is toast.
JIrby - Your definition of intelligence is not based on IQ points or on education levels completed, only on political viewpoints you have vs. other people. This is nonsense, and exactly what I was talking about. By your scale you would consider those who still like Congress to be "Lower Vertebrates" - I.e. not even human, as well, because their approval according to polls is in the dumper as well.   I know you do not like Bush and believe that a lot of people agree with you, but GWB is not running for a third term. Finally, looking at a big picture and seeing a position where running out on Iraq (Which I am guessing is your main issue against Thompson, you mentioned no issues but instead chose to attack him and his potential voters out of hand as "subhuman") would be foolish and lead to more problems is not a sign of low intelligence, given what happened in Gaza recently following the Israelis leaving and what happened in Afghanistan after the Soviets and US advisers left and what happened in Pakistan's areas on the Afghan border where the Pakistani gov't doesn't go, it is not a sign of low intelligence but a keen sense of reality. Those who slander their opponents as subhuman with no issue content turn more people off to voting for them (or anyone else) than they inspire. Such rhetoric only guarantees more public apathy to politics in general and the political dirt machines in particular.
Isn't it funny how all the criticism of Fred has to do with his age and the fact that his wife is good looking?  Libs can't argue ideas (what good can you say about socialism?) so they stick with the superficial. Why don't you libs grab your protest signs and go stand in front of the post office. Because that's about all you're good at.
Alright, now Jeff Wilson of Chesterfield, Missouri is my kind of Republican: probably morbidly obese, unable to separate patriotic fervor from policy, rabidly backing any and every war against any and all countries who represent no threat, yet completely submissive to the burgeoning police state.

What I really like about folks like Jeff is the conviction that they’re conservatives and anyone who disagrees with them must be a liberal. To him, a historical scholar is someone who can give you the score of every football game in the last twenty years. With so much defiant ignorance, he has no idea that Bush, Rudy McRomney, and I are completely at odds with the current and past teachings and positions of Old Right and classical liberal thinkers – like Pat Buchanan, Gore Vidal, Russell Kirk, Thomas Woods, and Lew Rockwell. He’ll support a “fight for freedom” while liberty is actually disappearing.

Even better, I can directly insult him and he will still vote for me:

Hey dummy, there’s hardly a conservatives left in the Republican party. We’re actually pseudo masculine, global, economic determinists with a pathological disdain for the environment.

Think I’ve lost a vote. Nope, he’ll come right back groveling at my feet like a dog. All I need is a little carefully crafted rhetoric:

Uh… the American people… terrorists… radical Islam… tax breaks… liberals… tree huggers.

It’s great, I can expand the Government all I want so long as I tell all the Jeffs of America that I want more efficient government. He's dead to the notion that real conservatives demand and deliver less government.

Thanks for your vote, Jeff. Without good Americans like you, politicians like me wouldn’t be able to run this country into the ground.
Don't ever underestimate the advantages of being a well-known Hollywood and TV personality.  Those Democrats who did unwittingly contributed to the eight years of the Ronald Reagan Administration, a modest president who achieved impressive poll ratings and won re-election carrying the most states of any candidate in United States history.  As to Mr. Thompson's voice, it is not only mellifluous, but shows his high education, his extreme intelligence, and has just the right amount of Southern Accent to be enjoyable to hear and not annoying at all.  He is tall, handsome, well-liked by everyone who knows him, and is known, by name and face recognition, by virtually every person who has a television in the US.  He plays the wise District Attorney on "Law and Order" and could be said to actually be playing himself.  He has conservative credentials, and closer to middle-of-the-road philosophy than most candidates.  He runs second in the polls for the Republican nomination even though he has not even announced yet.  His brilliance and on-camera experience makes him nearly the perfect candidate.  And as for experience, he has eight years in the U.S. Senate, compared to Obama who has two on his resume.  Thompson has been well-known since Watergate days, and there have not been any complaints.  His good looks and height at 6'4" will help him as well.  With only average luck, he could win the Republican nomination, and the Presidency, and become the most beloved president since Ronald Reagan.  They share much of the same philosophy, history, and likability.  A few months after his expected announcement of his decision to run, on July 4th, look for him to top the polls within a few months, and be powerful enough to thin the large Republican group of candidates.  He has a good chance to win, and has been successful in virtually everthing he has tried.  Those who ignore him do so at their own risks.
Personally, I have full confidence in Thompson winning the general election in '08. He's charismatic and conservative enough to win the republican primary, mainly because the alternatives seem so phony. As for the general election, we're talking about running against a party who couldn't field a candidate/campaign competent enough to beat GWB for re-election, when most independents didn't like GWB.

The far-left and the far-right people might not see it yet, but he has the quality that got Bush re-elected even when people had concerns about how he was running the country. He is perceived as a honest guy who says what he means, and has a plan other than "I'm not the other guy." With these other candidates, that alone will be enough.
You can tell by all the Fred-bashing by liberal Democrats and the media just how much of a challenge he presents.  With Hillary et al. and many others trying to shut down the conservative talk show hosts by "legislation", that tells you just how dirty the race is going to become.  It is easy to bash Fred and other Republican candidates, but quite another to justify nomination of a socialist with dubious ability and conduct to mess up our nation. Even Bill Clinton's foreign funds cannot pull her out of that fire.  Of course, we should not miss the chance to have our kids learn more about oral sex in the Oral Office of the White House. The Hillary Factor, (46% direct disapproval) along with one or two detractor spoilers should just about do it.  A little more on Fred-bashing, it does seem fashionable, but methinks thou doth protest too much. I too am with Fred and will support Fred for nomination and election.
Mr.  If the next President is one of 'dubious ability and conduct" and will 'mess up our Nation', that would make two in a row.
Substituting him for her in the song, a song for Fred."I don't want him you can have him, he's too fat for me. He's too fat, he's too fat, he's too fat for me."-"Too Fat Polka"-Arthur Godfrey
I don't know how some of you posters can go after Fred Thompson detractors as liberals. If you like Fred Thompson, then you like a guy who is pro-war, pro-amnesty, anti-gun, big-government politician. That's not a conservative platform. There is one candidate all freedom loving, patriotic Americans should be rallying behind: Ron Paul.
Fred Thompson will only continue the failed policies of Shrub with Liz Chaney on board as the foreign policy guru and Mary Matalin as lead publicity agent. We know it will get real fishy when ole Dick Chaney nominates himself again as vice-presdent. All we need is another dim-wit president to let Dick and the neocons run wild. But the truth is that they will not get a chance since over 70% of the voters are against the Iraq war and any Republican nominated that is tainted going along with Shrub and Dick, then its going to be the White House again for Bill, Hill and little Jimmy Carville! "
How plain can I make it be! Ole Fred, if he gets the nomination stands NO chance against anyone the demo's throw up. He will continue Shrubs war policy with Chaneys pulling his chain the entire way. With 70% of the voting public against the Iraq war he is checkmated. This is coming from a conservative perspective in the deep deep south (not Florida) that would consider Tennessee yankee land. Fred is dim bulb that would be mins-mash by the MSM once he actually declares. A vote for Fred is a vote for Hillary. " A vote for Ron Paul is a vote for liberty.
Hmmm, I have an I.Q. of 135+ and I'm voting for Fred.

And those busting Fred's chops for having a young, beautiful wife, why?  First of all, what difference does it make?  The guy who asked if this is the couple we want in the white house needs to re-think why he is even vocal in the political arena.  What kind of question is that anyway.  Second, wouldn't most (older guys) like to have a young, beautiful wife?  The fact that Fred got what others can't have must be very irritating to some.  Shall we say, Sour Grapes?
And Fred Thompson also has the physical cowardice that is valued by Republicans like Lott, Cheney, Rove, and so many others who never took on any of the burdens of fighting Communism, drug lords, terrorism, or any other armed enemy of the US.

I will not vote for yellow bellied chickenhawks.
"Ole Fred" is Bush III and Chaneys pick for sure, he needs another "dim-bulb" president so he can nominate himself again as VP. If you don't think this could be in the cards, Liz Chaney is Fred's foreign policy guru and Mary Matalin is public relations advisor with probably the rest of Shrubs minions following in the wake.
It will probably not matter, with over 70% of the voting public against the Iraq war, anyone who is tainted with Bush II will be run over by Bill, Hill and Jimmy Carville. Maybe thats why the MSM is enamored by "Ole Fred"
IS Fred RUNNING, are you guys wasting you fingers?
What a blast ... reading those comments about "poor old, dumb old, Fred Thompson"!  I'll bet that many of you are the same losers who said the same things about Reagan.  It's painfully obvious that most of you haven't taken the time to listen to what "poor old, dumb old, Fred" has to say about the matters of the day.  I look forward to reading your statements after "poor old, Dumb Old Fred" has been sworn into office as Pres.  I'm betting you'll not have much to say at that time.
If Fred is handsome, I am the new Fabio.
David Powell--So, I take it your "solution" is for our boys to stay in Iraq indefinitely, losing 100 a month on a neocon-led p.c. war (without using our devastating airpower)...very sad.

Man of Steel--I would venture to guess that most of the anti-Thompson folks on this blog, like me, are Indycons--no, not "Indiana conservatives"! INDEPENDENT CONSERVATIVES! Perhaps there are a few assorted liberals feigning to be conservatives or libertarians...

While I appreciate many of you supporting Fred Thompson for President, you are quite mistaken in your assumptions, particularly the one about "the conservative base [being] excited" about his expected candidacy. Whether you know it or not, a lot of conservatives left the GOP, tore up their cards and aren't going back and not for a RINO like Thompson. I'm not saying Thompson hasn't done some smart things as early as 2000 or so to prep for this day:

-He quit the Senate prematurely
-He married a trophy wife

The latter might help him in the Northeast where evangelists don't have a hold on conservative politics. But the latter doesn't help him in the South among evangelical conservatives.

Just remember--the current polls don't mean much, now, and certainly not for an unannounced candidate!

Five things hurt him that the public at large isn't yet aware of (and thus his high poll numbers) assuming he doesn't properly answer them publicly:

-His stance on the 30 million illegal aliens here in the U.S. and whether he would boost the effort to build the Fence (which is the law). Anti-Invasion conservatives are deeply suspicious that he might continue Bush's push for amnesty for these many millions given his clear unwillingness to "round them up". There is no "middle ground" on this issue. Either you're for legalizing them, or you're for mass deportation. What Thompson DOESN'T say in the Chris Wallace interview is what he will do as President--would he push to legalize them as Bush is doing? Or will he finally take the reins off of ICE and rid the country of those who don't belong here? What he also fails to mention in the interview is how sky high housing costs would plummet if the 30-plus million were to begin to leave. Apartments and homes would be vacant, and rents would drop precipitously, favoring low-wage Americans. Thompson says he's "afraid of what mass deportation would mean to the economy". It would be A BOON!! Instead of the slave labor we now have, employers would have to pay a reasonable wage (as they did prior to the Invasion) and many out-of-work Americans would be lined up for those jobs! It's already been proven time and time again after the raids on the meat-packing plants in the Midwest. Mike fr. Hermosa Beach had it right on the money.

-His ties to Bush and the RINOCRACY and McCain most notably.

-His vowing to continue the war in Iraq which the American public is tired of and against

-His supposed "conservative record" as a Senator--a real joke!

-His refusing to kill any SPP/NAU efforts made by Bush. Americans want their sovereignty preserved and want the Invasion fr. Mexico stopped! Thompson is a member ofr the treasonous org The CFR.

Conservatives, whether you realize it or not, have been "had" by RINOs Pappa Bush and GW. They aren't coming back to the nest just to cast a vote again for "the lesser of two evils"--not enough of us this time! Many of us, like myself, will support a true conservative like Ron Paul until or unless he drops out. At that point, many of us will vote for The CP candidate who hopefully will be Dr. Jerome Corsi. Now THERE'S a conservative I could support!!

Here are Thompson's remarks to Chris Wallace on the Invasion fr. Mexico in that interview earlier this year:

WALLACE: You also favor comprehensive immigration reform. I want to...

THOMPSON: No, no, no, no.

WALLACE: Well, let me put up on the screen something that you said last year about illegals, and let's take a look at it. "You're going to have to, in some way, work out a deal where they can have some aspirations of citizenship but not make it so easy that it's unfair to the people waiting in line and abiding by the law."

Now, you said, "Look, it's just not realistic that we're going to round up 12 million people and ship them all out of the country."

THOMPSON: Well, that's true, as a general statement. We woke up one day after years of neglect and apparently discovered that we have somewhere between 12 million and 20 million illegal aliens in this country. So it became an impossible situation to deal with. [Not true! We knew it was happening, screamed blood hell but weren't heard until Rep. Tancredo and the Minutemen Project came along]

I mean, there's really no good solution. So what do you do? You have to start over. Well, I'm concerned about the next 12 million or 20 million. So that's why enforcement, and enforcement at the border, has to be primary. [Well, Mr. Thompson, WE THE PEOPLE are concerned about THE CURRENT 30 million here who are killing, raping, maiming, molesting and committing fraud on U.S. taxpayers!]

I think most people feel disillusioned after 1986 when we had this deal offered to them before, and now we're insisting that, you know, we solve the security problem first, and then we'll talk about what to do with regard to other things — certainly no amnesty or nothing blanket like that.

But figure out some way to make some differentiation between the kind of people that we have here. [Huh? Amnesty? What's he talking about? Differentiation???]

You know, if you have the right kind of policies, and you're not encouraging people to come here and encouraging them to stay once they're here, they'll go back, many of them, of their own volition, instead of having to, you know, load up moving vans and rounding people up. That's not going to happen." [We'll only encourage them to go back if the jobs dry up. And that will only happen when the Feds crack down on the millions of lawbreaking employers here! Will President Thompson do this? Not the way he tells it. No mention of "employers" in his response]

********************************************

In other words, he's against blanket amnesty--but would "want to figure out some way to make some differentiation..." Sounds like another amnesty to me!! There are only three
possibilities--either you're for laissez les tranquille (leaving them alone), giving them some form of amnesty OR you're for arresting and deporting them. There IS no "middle ground" on this issue. Since he didn't mention employer sanctions or ENFORCING the Fed. laws on the books against employers hiring illegals, that indicates to me that Thompson would CONTINUE what Bush is doing--a little enforcement here, and none everywhere else, continued "catch and release" and the continued deaths of Americans at the hands of illegal aliens will continue. I don't think that is acceptable to most Americans. If you read americanpatrol.com, you'd know that we lose 13 Americans a day to drunk driving illegals. Here's what admired Rep. Steve King of Iowa reports:

"U.S. Representative Steve King reported that we lose 13 Americans per day to drunken and/or unlicensed illegal aliens. He also reported that we lose an additional 12 Americans per day to murder by illegal aliens, and that 8 American children per day are molested by illegal aliens."

This cannot continue. And conservatives will not rally around a candidate who is not on our side. The LAST thing we need is another RINO in The White House!! 8 years of the present one is enough, given the damage he's done.

Good luck with Mr. Thompson. You'll need it.

Anyone who claims not to know about the SPP/NAU is unfit to be running for office. Is Fred lazy or avoiding? I think both.
Hey, all you "Mensa-Member Wanna-Be" blowhards who continue to harp on the intelligence (or lack thereof)of Republican / Conservative voters -- listen up! The only truly intelligent Dem Pres in recent memory was little Billy Clinton and, like it or not, everybody knows what a phony he has turned out to be.  Strange how you conveniently forget that how most of you called Ron Reagan a "dunce", etc., and now every passing day reveals more evidence of what a super-intelligent person he was.  Me thinks that anyone who is so concerned about the IQ of others is probably very deficient in that department himself. I speak as a formerly very-liberal Democrat (now Republican and conservative -- I finally grew up, thank God!), and my IQ -- if it matters -- is 141.
