‘Run Fred, run’

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
When Fred Thompson arrived in Nashville this morning, he had a warm homecoming. Supporters greeted him with loud cheers of "Run Fred, Run." At another point, supporters started to chant "Fred, Fred, Fred." Some held home-made signs saying, "I'm Proud to be a Fred Head, FDT '08." The TV star and former senator signed a few.

Thompson recounted his decision to run for the presidency. "I've never craved the office of the presidency," he said. "You all know me well enough to know that. I've always been a Tennessean; I've always run in Tennessee. But these times are different and to have the opportunity maybe to make a difference ... in the direction of your country, and to be able to provide some leadership, is something that you cannot turn your back on."

At this point, a supporter in the audience yelled, "Your country needs you Fred!" The rest of the supporters continued to cheer for Thompson, who kept the visit short.

What? Another phoney republican like George they're gonna build up and make him into something he aint. What a surprise...He hasn't jumped in the race yet because he's got too much baggage. Who wants to bet?
Who cares about this "old fart" ?
We know very little about this man, because hes not jumping into the race. That makes me suspicious. Ill bet he has alot to hide.
This whole Fred Thompson thing is so fabricated and lame; true conservatives should be ashamed.  At least progressives follow leaders who actually, well, lead.
Tennessee knows Fred Thompson just as it knows Al Gore. That's why Gore lost in his own home state and Thompson, if he is nominated, will easily win it's support. Don't wait for the liberal MSM to spoon feed you what it wants you to know on this mans career. Seek out the public record yourself. You might be surprised. It was Thompson's questioning while  serving on the Watergate invesitgation commitee that exposed tape recordings made in the Oval office. As a private attorney Thompson helped to expose a corrupt TN govenor who was selling pardons and paroles from the office. Those highlights, along with his voting record while in office show a man who places the best interests of the country above all. In my book he's the best of the field for 08.
Come on Joe.Even you cant buy this.As we speak a huge internecine war has opened between sections of the Democrat Party over this immigration mess,of which only one wing, that of admittedly, conservatives, has shown itself to be aligned with the majoral wishes of the American people, with the progressives and moderates utterly failing in leadership, beginning with Bush, and ending with the Reid-Pelosi-Kennedy bloc.Leftists are infuriated with Clinton.Moderates think that those such as Kucinich are missing all of the Aces and Eights from his mental deck.Conservatives are livid with Bush over his half-a-loaf immigration scheme, and each new day brings another mini-scandal involving one or more of the candidates of both parties which Thompson has thus far been able to dodge.[He did, after all, grab a respectable 16-18% in the nations most liberal state,California, right on Rudys heels, though he has not even committed yet.Even the equally uncommitted algore didn't do this well].How well the still-serving-in-Congress candidates do will likely depend on the outcome of their immigration bill vote.Outsiders such as Guliani,Edwards and Thompson need not worry.[except as they position themselves in a stance opposed by the electoral majority of Americans on this issue and remain tied to mere bases.Again, even here,Thompson will gain over Edwards].
With a choice between Obama and Clinton, it's no wonder the Neo-Libs are afraid of the "old fart", Fred Thompson.
Fred Thompson has had several very successful careers. He has stood firm on the Federalist values that brought him into politics.  I'll take Fred Thompson over Hillary, Obama and anyone else in the field.  The comments above are such typical liberal spew..."I'll bet he has something to hide."  Give me a break!

I know everything I need to know about him to vote and campaign for him.  I've already got my "I'm With Fred"  coffee mug and mouse pad!
He is just waiting for the front runners to destroy each other with attacks before he steps in and is seen as a savior. Very smart strategy, especially with the savior loving crowd.
I'm not supporting Fred, but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and make a bold prediction. Barring a major health issue arising from his non-Hodgkins lymphoma he will be our next president. The GOP base isn't happy with any of the present candidates, but they are salivating over Thompson. Here in SC people are saying "he seems like one of us". Not so of course, but perception is reality. Barring a major faux pas Hillarity will more than likely be the Democratic nominee, and she can not win. Talk about baggage. And she is seen by many as more interested in power than actually serving the American people. Nearly 50% of Americans polled say they wouldn't vote for her under any circumstances. Hillarity is a far-left socialist trying to play centrist, but most people see through her ruse. She doesn't play well in the south or the midwest. You can't win the White House by carrying only the northeast and the left coast. Can you say President Thompson?
F,JJ,bb, and Joe,

I was there today and support FDT. Fred's not afraid of his past-he's been 100% upfront-even his x and his former girfriends support him! bb, There is a TON of info on Fred on the internet and I've learned more than I thought possible about his record, his clearly stated positions on critical issues, his health,...you name it-it's out there. Joe Justice-I AM a true conservative and I don't have an ounce of shame! I will vote for Fred as a better informed voter than ever before in my adult life and I'm 54. I don't watch or care about Law and Order. A reporter asked me today about how women feel about Fred and if his age was a factor. He jokes about his own bald head, but I don't know a single smart woman who'd complain about that. What I saw today was the real deal-nothing fabricated at all-you can't fake what he has or learn it in acting school. FDT will have my vote and I'm confident that he will be the strong leader this country needs!!
Joe: Progressive leader #1- Hillary Clinton- voted for Iraq after not reading the intelligence brief, then when the polls and death toll went up sided with the anti-war wing of the party. Nice backbone & conviction of ideas. After one term in the Senate, how much health care reform legilstation did this admitted pilocy wonk introduce to refrom teh system? 0 bills or ammendments to bills. To quote Borat: Nice!
Looks like he'd be better off running for Governor.

Actually, bb, we know quite a bit about Fred Thompson. I've made it easy for folks to learn about him at http://fredthompsonfaq.com/tiki-index.php
Joe Justice wrote: "This whole Fred Thompson thing is so fabricated and lame; true conservatives should be ashamed.  At least progressives follow leaders who actually, well, lead."

Not so, Joe.  I'm a true Goldwater-Reagan movement conservative who is very proud of Fred Thompson. And he has a clear record of leadership:

His resume is replete with leadership positions: Four years as Chairman of the Governmental Affairs Committee, Assistant US Attorney, Co-Chief Senate Watergate Council, Special counsel to the Governor of Tennessee (1980), Special Counsel to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (1980-81), Special Counsel to the Senate Intelligence Committee (1982).

As minority counsel on the Watergate hearings, Fred Thompson lead the minority staff in the impeachment of Richard Nixon.

As a lawyer in Tennessee, he led the movement which took down a corrupt governor.

Fred Thompson went to Washington with a basic belief that the federal government should be smaller, more efficient, and more accountable. To make that goal a reality, he has worked for and achieved a string of significant reforms, becoming what USA Today called, "a leader on a range of clean-up Washington issues."

As a U.S. Senator, he led the effort to defeat S507, a nasty bill which would have destroyed our country’s patent system, giving away many American innovations to foreign firms and governments.

As chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, Thompson worked with the General Accounting Office to unveil the first ever audit of the federal government. Fred led the fight to reduce waste in the federal government, making agencies more accountable and saving the texpayers billions of dollars.

Fred led the effort to reduce our nation's vulnerability to computer attacks - from terrorists, crime rings, and hackers. Sen. Thompson authored the Government Information Security Act, which was signed into law and provides a new framework for protecting the government's computers from outside attack by hackers.

Fred Thompson led by example when he introduced Senate Joint Resolution 21 proposing a constitutional amendment to limit congressional terms to two terms for Senators and three terms for Representatives, and then he resigned from the Senate after having served one and a half terms.

Finally, Fred Thompson led the effort to get John Roberts confirmed by the Senate to be chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Fred's gravitas and his ability to persuade made Roberts' confirmation a much less contentious process than most people thought it would be.

Fred Thompson is indeed a leader, and one which true conservatives admire and respect.
Its both amazing and revealing how scared the Liberals are of this man.  He's just another GOP actor, right?  The conservative base will grow disallusioned with him, right?  He's jumped from a nobody to leading the GOP pack.  Go ahead, liberals, keep bashing this man.  He'll let you sit in the back of the room when he's inaugurated in Jan 2009.
Just another DUMB GOPER, right?   President Thompson has a nice ring to it.  BETTER FRED THAN DEAD.
Fred/Rudy 08......America's Bald Eagles
This man will be the next President if the dopey dems nominate Mrs. Clinton.

i'd take a fred thompson before a hillary clinton, or obama, especially edwards...    and let's not confuse them for what they are by decorating them with nice words like "progressives"...  they're liberals (plain and simple)
The only thing this guy has going for him is he was on TV and in movies.    He's a crooked lobbyist from 'way back and has no qualifications to be President.
Such knee jerk cynicism!! If we "know nothing" about Mr. Thompson, how can we judge him a "phoney"? And, is referring to him as a bodily function meant to  dismiss him, merely practice, or perhaps an indication of a limited vocabulary?  I have an idea--why don't we wait and see?
Fred will be good for this country. He is educated and realistic. Believes we should work for a living and stop the hands out policy from those democrats. Accountability, hard work and the desire to live in and prescribe to American values. The rest can leave...see you later..change to good by
Reality check for Aria. Sorry to disappoint you but we are going to have a WOMAN president and her name is Hillary. That scares you huh? Too bad.Too many balls got us into this mess to start with- REALITY CHECK.
Fred will be the next POTUS if the dems are dumb enough to nominate Mrs. Clinton.
I see my prediction may not have been so bold after all, as many of you seem to agree with me. Another reason I'm so convinced he has the best chance to win in '08 is the reaction from the left...it seems to be pure fear. Why else would they be trashing a man who "we know nothing about", and is "just another actor"? They know that them dems can't wait to nominate Hillarity and most of them realize she can't win, and they see the fervor building around "Uncle Fred", as he has been called by some here in SC. He does seem to speak with conviction, he does come across as honest (yeah, I know he's a politician) and he's definitely more conservative than Gulianni or McCain. he sun is quickly setting on McCain, true conservatives won't vote for Rudy, and if the GOP learned their lesson after the '06 midterms, they are going to do everything they can to win back voters by getting back to their roots. President Fred Thompson. Hmm. Sounds more likely than President Hillary Clinton, doesn't it?
Correct, Joe, progressives do follow leaders who lead. Lead this country straight down a path of destruction. This democrat congress has the lowest approval rating of any congress in history. Wow! That's not easy to accomplish, unless you are an all-mouth, no action buch of hacks, which they are. They stand for nothing but are against everything that is good for America. Thompson in '08, and he'll bring the GOP with him, back into power in both houses. One brief, dingy moment, is what this "progressive-led" congress will be remembered for. I guess after the 100 hours they figured they'd done enough. Same ol' same ol' from the left, talk loudly and carry a brittle stick.
Darren, it's interesting that people like Fred Thompson because he "seems like one of us".  That's exactly what they said about george w back in 2000.  Well, we'll see, I guess, in about a year and a half.
We need presidents who are better than us not someone who is one of us, otherwise just run a lottery and pick a Social Security number out of hat to run the country and save a lot of time and money. Actually that system would probably produce a better president that what we have but I think we can do even better.
You're exactly right, Scott. But we all know that GW isn't "one of us", don't we? He was coronated, not nominated, and has done little that he promised. (Where is my private SS account?) Of course Fred isn't "one of us" either, but as I said earlier, perception is reality and many people seem to believe he is. I personally don't like any of the present candidates, announced or not, but if it comes down to Fred and Hillarity, I'll have little choice but to vote for Fred. I could never give my support to a socialist.
