Elizabeth Edwards vs. Ann Coulter

The wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards called into MSNBC’s “Hardball” on Tuesday to confront Ann Coulter on her personal attacks on her husband and family

Coulter, the controversial conservative commentator, appeared on an outdoor set with host Chris Matthews -- and also with dozens of supporters and detractors waiting to ask questions. But there was another person waiting to pose a question to Coulter: Elizabeth Edwards.

According to an Edwards campaign aide, Elizabeth Edwards wanted to call into the show when she heard that Coulter would be taking questions, and she called a Hardball producer to get the phone number needed to dial into the show. The result is the exchange below:

Chris Matthews: You know who's on the line? Somebody to respond to what you said Edwards yesterday morning -- Elizabeth Edwards. She wanted to call in today we said she could. Elizabeth Edwards go on the line you're on the line with Ann Coulter

Elizabeth Edwards: Hello, Chris.

CM: You wanna say something directly to the person who's with me?

EE: I'm calling you … in the south when we -- when someone does something that displeases us, we wanna ask them politely to stop doing it. Uh - I'd like to ask Ann Coulter -- if she wants to debate on issues, on positions -- we certainly disagree with nearly everything she said on your show today -- um but uh it's quite another matter for these personal attacks that the things she has said over the years not just about John but about other candidates -- it lowers our political dialogue precisely at the time that we need to raise it. So I want to use the opportunity … to ask her politely stop the personal attacks.

Ann Coulter: OK, so I made a joke -- let's see six months ago -- and as you point out they've been raising money off of it for six months since then.

CM: This is yesterday morning, what you said about him.

AC: I didn't say anything about him actually either time.

EE: Ann, you know that's not true. And once more its been going on for sometime.

AC: I don't mind you trying to raise money. I mean it's better this than giving $50,000 speeches to the poor.

EE: I'm asking you

AC: Just to use my name on the Web pages…

EE: I'm asking you politely…

AC: … but as for a debate with me, um yeah, sure. Yeah, we'll have a debate

EE: I'm asking you politely to stop personal attacks.

AC: How bout you stop raising money on the Web page then?

EE: It didn't start it did not

AC: No you don't have cause I don't mind

EE: It did not start with that you had a column a number of years ago

AC: OK, great the wife of a presidential candidate is calling in asking me to stop speaking

CM: Let her finish the point...

AC: You're asking me to stop speaking stop writing your columns, stop writing your books.

CM: OK, Ann. Please.

AC: OK

EE: You wrote a column a couple years ago which made fun of the moment of Charlie Dean's death, and suggested that my husband had a bumper sticker on the back of his car that said ask me about my dead son. This is not legitimate political dialogue.

AC: That's now three years ago

EE: It debases political dialogue. It drives people away from the process. We can't have a debate about issues if you're using this kind of language.

AC: Yeah why isn't John Edwards making this call?

CM: Well do you want to respond and we'll end this conversation?

EE: I haven't talked to John about his call.

AC: This is just another attempt for –

EE: I'm making this call as a mother. I'm the mother of that boy who died. My children participate -- these young people behind you are the age of my children. You're asking them to participate in a dialogue that's based on hatefulness and ugliness instead of on the issues and I don't think that's serving them or this country very well.

APPLAUSE

CM: Thank you very much Elizabeth Edwards. Do you want to -- you have all the time in the world to respond.

AC: I think we heard all we need to hear. The wife of a presidential candidate is asking me to stop speaking. No.

The clip is sickening, in that watching a thoughtful, successful woman and mother confront a cheap coward isn't pretty.

Ann Coulter and those like her must be sidelined.

It's time.

Go, Elizabeth, Go.
Elizabeth Edwards is a bright woman.  However, she needs to learn what some of us have learned here: Don't feed the trolls.  Smile and go your own way until you find a voodoo priest or priestess and pay a few dollars for poison pins strategically inserted.    Unless you are as sneaky and snarky as the trolls are, you are bound to lose, even when you are right (maybe especially when you are right). Personally, I am as sneaky and snarky as some of our favorite trolls, but, like maggots, they just keep slipping and sliding back. Not worth getting maggot snot on your hands. Elizabeth, let Ann Coulter rot in hell and enjoy your life and family.
I am dissapointed that CM would have this comedian on his show.  She (AC) is a money mad bloodthirsty devil.  I do not know if I can ever watch Hardball after this.
Ann Coulter is a bitch who is doing something highly dishonorable for attention. How is it helpful at all to call Mr. Edwards a "faggot", say that he "should've been killed by a terrorist attact", or make this type of remarks about the man's dead son.
I'm not as polite about this as Mrs. Edwards, so
Burn in Hell, Ann Coulter!
I'm no fan of Ann Coulter, but Elizabeth Edwards came off really bad here.  I understand she wants to help her husband's campaign, but going after someone like Coulter is a cheap way to do it.
You know, being a bitch isn't witty, it's just bitchy.

Thanks Ann, you've showed us again, haven't you?
So Hillary is now doing  negative"Push Polling according to ben Smith in Politico today.  In Iowa and New hampshire.  So now we know how she makes her leads.  Going real Negative.  Ok First Read lets get on it.
I used to have respect for Chris Matthews but for him to bring on Ann Coulter who does a disservice to the Republican as well as the Democratic party with her hateful venom. Elizabeth Edwards has more decency in her little fingure than Coulter does in her whole body. As for Mattews, I have watched him for the last time. I used to live in DC area and worked for Catholic Charities and know he and his wife Kathleen have done much for the church but this lady is not christian (yet she wears her cross). The more air time she gets the more books she sells to a narrow group of biggots. God have mercy on her wrecthed soul. Chris you are a shill and have lost all credibility with me and thousands more I am sure after this spectacle today.
How typical of John Edwards to send his wife out whining to do his work.  Yes, I'm sorry they lost their son, but what does that have to do with his ability to lead the nation?  We should vote for him because he lost his son?  The obverse is we should NOT vote for him had he NOT lost his son-- that's how stupid is Mrs. Edwards' reasoning.  Edwards is just another rich spoiled brat liberal who wants to take from those who produce and give what he takes to those who don't produce -- so long at it doesn't come out of his pocket.  His wife is a just another liberal freeloader, riding his coattails -- hoping he'll wind up in the White House so she can spend our money redecorating that white elephant.  Liberal "compassion" -- it's enough to make you puke.
Chris, why in the world do you give the woman (AC) air time?  I truly think she is few fries short of a Happy Meal.  When you give her air time you are advocating this type of hatred.  Sure she sells books but you have to ask yourself, what type of person buys her books?  People who hate?

Please do not lower the standards of your show.
Funny but the transcript leaves out the host Chris Matthews correcting Coulter and stating that Ms. Edwards did not ask her to stop speaking.  Rather she asked that she stop being so personally negative.

Why is that missing?
Mrs. Edwards was trying to speak one lady to another.  However, there was only one lady present.

I know I just said that troll baiting wasn't worth getting maggot snot on your Doc Martins, but... all this talk about Ann Coulter reminded me that I need to go out back and shoot rats.  As I was emptying the clip on my vintage Uzi, all of a sudden an ancient Antarctic proverb popped into my mind. I can't imagine what it is about Ann Coulter that made me think of this, but I wanted to share it. Maybe it will shed some light on the subject: "People with big mouths also have deep throats."  Don't really understand it, but maybe Ann will know what it means.  Nothing personal, Ann. If you can't take a joke...
Ann Coulter is an idiot and I can't believe true news organization would give her brand of idiocy a forum.
Wow, those words are not the words I heard as I listened to the show!
I am tired of the hate that spews from the mouth of Ann Coulter. Every time she is challenged on her comments she says it was a joke.  Nobody with any brains believes that. She is rude, crass, and classless - a perfect representative of the conservative, right wing of this country - just kidding!
It is a sad commentary on the state of this country that a person with the education level of Ms. Coulter resorts to such shameful personal and mean-spirited attacks against people with whom she does not agree.
As usual Ann Coulter avoided the question by framing the debate in black and white terms. Elizabeth Edwards was NOT asking her to stop speaking, nor even was she asking her to stop her cynical political commentary, she was instead simply requesting a dialog that doesn't include cheap and slanderous personal attacks, something Ann Coulter is obviously incapable of doing. Why Chris Matthews would give this vile woman any airtime at all is beyond me. If only the MSM would stop sinking to the depths of the likes of Ann Coulter and start giving us some real, intelligent conversation about the issues.
Ann Coulture is a relic of the Bush Cheney credibility mackine. If she would listen to her words she would realize she sounds as sick as she looks. We can do without the mindless republican spin machine dropping more lies onto the American people. I am so surprised she still can gather 25 people to lisren to her spew her hate and lies. I'm so glad that ALL of the spinmysters are recognised and given less than a grain of salt for their thoughts. Go retire this old looking horse to Cheneys ranch of ill reputes.
Ann Coulter is an evil woman for wishing, or even thinking, that the best thing any American President could accomplish is be assaisinated. I wouldnt wish death by such an evil means on my worse enemy.  Anyone who does, and claims to be an American, needs to be shot.  She is a pathetic human being.
Why does MSNBC give this woman a forum to spew her lies and hate? Her time has passed and the best thing to do is ignore her and leave her to Faux news channel.
Kudos to Mrs. Edwards for attempting in a very generous and dignified manner to elevate the conversation out of the schoolyard and back into the issue-oriented political arena. But I guess for the Ann Coulter's and Rush Limbaugh's of the world, without the playground pushing and shoving, they have nothing of substance to say and will continue their "I know you are but what am I" dialogue.  Unfortunately the country thought it was cute the first time around. Fortunately, the country's not laughing anymore, and now we can only pray that Ann Coulter will be "expelled" from the schoolyard altogether (or at least sat in the corner with a much-earned dunce cap).
I'd like to applaud Ann for remaining the picture-perfect Republican in a time of potential crisis. Ann has never let us down. God Bless you, Ann. You are a wonderful role model for young conservatives everywhere.

Hurray for Mrs. Edwards.  No, Ann Coulter, we can't stop you from speaking because of freedom of speech, but I can and did, turn the t.v. off after hearing you for about five minutes.  Anyone with a heart would never make fun of another person's child's death.  It was intolerable and most of what you said in those five minutes was nothing but lies.  Iraq attacked us?  Oh please! There actually were weapons of mass destruction?  We went to war with Iraq because of the rape rooms?  What are you talking about?  Well, as I said, you can speak, but I can shut you off.
Ann Coulter - trashy neocon media star.
Ann Coulter is an entertainer.  She has no business offering political opinions or anything else remotely important to the political process.  Matthews should know better and stop having her on.  His little bit of credibility is quickly evaporating.
It is unfortunate that the garbage that AC spews was hurtful enough to EE that she attempted to have a polite conversation with the vile, foul-mouthed AC. That was a tremendous waste of energy and good will which would be better spent ignoring the nauseating language of AC.
I have yet to figure out who it is that I may actually know that listens to AC, pays to listen to her, or better yet purchases her books. It truly disgusts me that it could be someone who is sitting next to me in church. It also disgusted me that CM had her on again. I immediately switched to CNN and I consider myself a loyal Hardball fan. I would appreciate it if neither EE or CM stooped to such lows again.

Again, Ann Coulter would rather talk over then actually listen to what someone is saying.  How did this woman (term used to be polite) ever survive to adulthood??  Maybe her mother should have taken Roe v. Wade to heart on this one.  Just my opinion.
Ms. Coulter has one simple mantra. She uses her apparent lack of dignity and self-respect to 'cut and run' in another direction using crude, irresponsible, impertinent and condesending remarks to get off topic.  She seems to have no respect for anything except money. Even though she wore a cross, the person who lives by Christian faith in that conversation was clearly demonstrated by the grace and dignity of Mrs. Edwards.  No matter how successful Ms. Coulter is with her publications, she will ultimately pay a dear price for her routine display of anything but Christian behavior. Remember the old saying,"what goes around comes around?" I hope I live long enough to see Ms. Coulter get her dose of 'come around'.
What I'd like to know is why the media (other than
the right-wing) would want to give Coulter any air time.  She spouts nothing but poison - from calling the 911 widows harpies and worse, to wishing people dead.  What's even worse is that Chris Matthews let her get away with it.  I never heard Elizabeth Edwards ask her to stop speaking - only to stop personal attacks, yet Matthews let Coulter say a number of times that Edwards asked her to stop speaking.  I guess ratings go up when you allow people to lie and attack.
Why do people continue to give Ann Coulter a venue to spread her toxic message? What gives her any legitimacy at all in today's political debate? I don't understand why someone so hateful and cruel is given a platform to be cruel. There are plenty of respectful yet spirited commentators on all sides of the political debate, and Coulter is not one of them.
Factoid, Chris: Ann Coulter is not a journalist and you have no more respectibility.  You have given it up and so willingly. COulter is not worth air time.
Anne Coulter is the epitome of evil and Elizabith Edwards is her opposite.
It was so unfair to hear Elizabeth Edwards, who obviously had time to prepare her remarks, attacking Ann Coulter, who had no idea what was coming.  I was hoping that when Mrs. Edwards accused Ann of making personal remarks, Ann would remember that it was Mrs. Edwards who went after Mary Cheney last year regarding Cheney's sexual orientation.  I heard Elizabeth Edwards on a radio show repeating it over and over to the point I wanted to say, yes, we heard you the first time.  On MSNBC tonight she was representing herself "as a mother" and yet had no compassion in 2004 year for Lynne Cheney "as a mother" even though it backfired when John Kerry repeated it too and Satturday Night Live did a parody.  It made me think that what comes around certainly goes around. Elizabeth Edwards seems to be to running to hide behind Chris Matthews just like Anne Coulter said Hilllary did behing Rehm Emmanuel.  I will make no comments whatsover about the size of Elizabeth Edwards' legs.
I can't believe that you haven't included in the transcripts of this dialogue and it's aftermath where Anne Coulter said that she wishes John Edwards would die in a terrorist attack!!!! Are you deliberately trying to cover-up that portion of the commentary???!! Or are you perhaps ashamed that you even had Anne Coulter as a guest speaker on your program??? What Anne Coulter is VERY good at is distracting the people from the real issues, the real important news such as Dick Cheney's attempt to shut the American public (whom he works for & acts in our name) out of his secret affairs and how he handles information regarding national security!!! Who cares what this woman thinks??! She has on so many occasions shown that she has no legitimate place in a respectable or responsible journalistic arena. It is very shameful of Hardball, it's staff & producers to allow this woman on the show just because she can sell books and divert peoples attention from legitimate issues that affect our country's future. I would STRONGLY suggest that Hardball admits it's gross and frankly extremely cheap error in this case.
I really don't care for Ann Coulter's style. She is brash, rude, and arrogant. But she is also blunt, to the point and brutaly honest. John Edwards is a BS artist of the highest order. He is a hypocrite to boot. I do not believe for one moment that he didn't know anything about this phone call. Elizabeth Edwards has been through plenty of political campaigns. She would not go out on her own and make such a call. it was planned, it was strategy, it was approved by John Edwards. It was done to gain sympathy. Ann was wrong when she made the "joke" about the Edwards' son. Elizabeth is wrong in using the issue to raise money and to gain political points. Smart voters won't buy the BS from either of them.
I do not understand Ann Coulter. She appears to have no grasp of the issues and Chris Matthews looked liked he was doing some mighty heavy lifting by the time the "interview" ended. She stays in the spotlight because she refuses to do what Mrs. Edwards suggested-raise the level of discourse and stop picking on people.Mrs.Edwards tried hard but it was futile.I shut the TV off. My heart broke for Mrs. Edwards. Ann Coulter should never, ever say she is a Christian woman.  She needs help.
Abby
Either Ann Coulter did not answer Elizabeth Edwards question or else the answer is that she is incapable speaking without uttering personal attacks and doesn't think it a failing.  I wish Chris had clarified her answer.
If I had been there I would have asked Mann Coulter about her Adam's Apple :)
Ann Coulter is to intelligent political dialog as midget wrestling is to Olympic Sports.  MSNBC, Chris Matthews, and the Hardball staff should be embarrassed for even having given her a platform to spew her venom.

We can only hope she is serious and stops speaking.
Ann made fun of a dead son!? My God, if the woman got married, and had a child, like the bible suggests, she might understand why it's painful to lose a child! Hypocrite.
Ann Coulter is one despicable human being. What more can you say. She spews vwmon and tht is it. she appeals to base of the brain .
Edwards is the candidate the right most worries about. he is in the best position to erode their power therefore the slander.
I typically enjoy hearing both sides of an issue.  Even if I may not agree, it's interesting to hear another point of view, provided of course there's an actual basis for the argument.  Inane, baseless spewing on the other hand, just sounds like someone yelling on the playground and is actually discrediting, regardless of which side is being advocated.  It's sad to see this platform come to this.
I admire Mrs. Edwards for raising the bar of political dialogue.  I just wished there was someone on the Republican side to do the same.
Ann Coulter - the attention starved, anorexic poster child of the right - gets yet another moment of fame.  When will the media ever learn?
Ann Coulter is being purposefully ignorant here.  She knows no one is asking her to stop speaking.  Elizabeth Edwards is simply asking her to be CIVIL.  Apparently Ann is unable to accomodate.
Thank you, Elizabeth, for bringing what Coulter does into focus. Personal attacks obfuscate issues, derail and debase debate. They are meant to be divisive. It's a deliberate tactic, a waster of time formulated to demoralize all opposition. We're so tired of it.
oh boy, I love Elizabeth Edwards better every day.  I saw John Edwards speak in Tucson last month, and he gives a great stump speech.  Elizabeth seems to me - excuse the source material - a uniter not a divider as does her husband.  Three Cheers for the Edwards!!!
Chris Matthews is a disgrace.
