Brownback's vote switch

From NBC's Carrie Dann

GOP presidential hopeful Sam Brownback was very nervous for 11 minutes this morning. That's the time that elapsed between his initial "Aye" vote for cloture on the Senate's immigration bill today -- essentially an expression of support for the Bush-backed overhaul -- and a change to "Nay" before the vote was over.

Brownback likely recognized that a vote in favor of the bill, which is deeply unpopular among many Republicans who consider it "amnesty" for illegal immigrants, would not play well in the GOP presidential race or in a potential re-election bid in his native Kansas (he's up in 2010). He's supported the bill up until now, and voted to bring the measure to the Senate floor earlier in the week.

***Update*** At 2:10 pm ET, Brownback's Senate office issued a press release entitled "BROWNBACK VOTES AGAINST CLOTURE ON IMMIGRATION BILL," but it didn't mention he voted for the bill today before he voted against it. “We need comprehensive immigration reform, but the country is not accepting of this bill,” Brownback stated in the press release. “We need to listen to the American people on both timing and substance. We need to help ‘the widow and orphan and foreigner amongst us,’ but must do so in a way and at a time the American people support. This is not yet the right way. We should let the topic rest for now while we work diligently to secure our borders. Americans support legal immigration, not illegal immigration. We desire to be compassionate but demand adherence to the rule of law.”

He sounds like the other
Republican Senators who are starting to want troop pull-out in Iraq but can't vote to support such pull-out.
With due respect, it very much sounds like a rat deserting a sinking ship.

I diagreee with the President, Sen McCain and Senator Graham on this bill but at least they had the courage of their convictions and supported it because they thought it was right.

The number of votes that changed over two days suggests that either the support on Tuesday was purchased via favors or threats or that the vote today was the move of frightened rabbits.  Either way it shows why congress' approval ratings are way below the presidents.

In the end its our own fault we get the congress we vote for and the representatives we deserve.
Changing the votes at the last minute just so they will get re-elected won't save their seats in 2008. Too little, too late. These spineless Republicans have forgotten what conservatism is. Thank goodness though, some Republicans listened. Shame on Grahamnesty, Lott, McCain, and Voinovich.
Brownback should call his presidential campaign off now.  So should McCain.
Thank you Michelle!!  Without you and Lou Dobbs this would have passed and American’s would never have known what hit them until it was all over.  I have always been a Republican.  I am now an Independent.  I will not now, or ever support anyone that supports illegal Immigration.  The illegals are ruining this country.  I sincerely hope we can either get a Republican or Independent run for President that will work for the American People not for Mexico.  We do not want another Bush in the White House.

Thank you,

Willie Robbins
I had considered supporting him for the GOP nomination for President. But I won't vote for anybody who supported this illegal alient amnesty bill.
Senator Brownback,

Thank you for voting "No" on cloture today on the Immigration Bill.  It was the right thing to do.

Still, your initial "Yea" vote which was switched to "Nay" only once it was clear the bill was going down strikes me as outright weasely, and clearly un-Presidential.  I am not the only one - I have already heard many asking what that switch was about.  It just doesn't look good.

I'm an undecided primary voter in Arkansas.  If you want to have a shot at the Presidency, either now or in the future, I strongly urge you to not just try to ignore that switch, but instead to come out and explain your reasoning.  Your website says you are a "Principled" Conservative.  Voting one way and then changing your vote 11 minutes later when it's clear your side is going down is anything but principled, sir.  Either explain yourself or we will be forced to assume the worst about this event.

Thank you.

WE DID IT! Yes, pressure from us, the American people, killed this bill. They thought they could hoodwink us all, convince us that this was the best solution, and gain our acceptance, if not our support. They were wrong. Now is not the time to celebrate however. Now is the time to keep the pressure on. Continue to call, to email, to write, to tell them that now we want strict enforcement of current law, and that we want the border SHUT DOWN. let them know if they don't step up, we won't send them back to DC. Let them know your vote is contingent on their actions on the illegal immigration problem. I don't want to see America become a 3rd world country. If something isn't done now, in another 20 years instead of talking about 12-20 million we'll be talking about 40-50 million, or more. Lindsey Graham said on the Senate floor today that NOTHING would be done on border enforcement until we deal with the 12-20 million already here. He said they are not going to be deported, they are not going to jail, but they are going to be treated fairly. Treating them fairly would mean deporting or jailing them. They are violating our laws. With our inaction we are telling the world to COME ON IN, we won't do anything. How about treating those who are going through the proper LEGAL channels to come here fairly? Why should we continue to tell them to wait their turn while millions are cutting line in front of them? Those in DC who are for doing absolutely nothing aren't thinking past their own political careers and their promises to big labor. They do not seem to care about the consequences of their inaction that our children an grandchildren will be left to deal with in years to come. Why should they? By then the only solution will be "The North American Union." I saw pictures of a pro-amnesty rally in LA yesterday of Hispanics holding up signs with troubling slogans. Some said "this is our continent, you back back, illegal European sons-of-*******. Only here to do the jobs we won't do? BS. Even Lindsey Gramnesty switched his characterization of them today during his pathetic speech on the floor, from doing they are doing the jobs we won't do, to "we don't know who they are or what they're doing". That's what I've been saying all along! The solution, at the risk of again repeating myself, is simple. Enforce existing laws. Revoke business lisences of those who employ them. Impose heavy fines. Incarcerate employers who repeatedly ignore the law. AYesterday, a business owner on our local a.m. talk show said the only way he could make a profit was by hiring illegals. Really? Then get a job. What about the business owners who are following the law? Aren't you unfairly undercutting them? Aren't you driving them out of business with your illegal practices? Enough is enough. KEEP THE PRESSURE ON! TELL YOUR REPS AND SENATORS THAT IF THEY DON'T SEND THE ILLEGALS HOME, YOU WILL SEND THEM HOME!
I'm from Kansas and I'd have to agree with Michael from Oregon . . . Brownback needs to call it off.  I just hope we can get a true conservative who will stand on principal to run for his senate seat in 2010.
flip flopper?  Where are the Swift Boaters when you need them?
Senator Brokeback is a disgrace. Add his name to the list of Traitors. If we dont take this trash out we will all be speaking spanish and selling chickletts. Starting with that insufferable mangina Lindsey Graham and Salems Lott.
Senator Sam Switchback?
Bye-bye Brownback. I hope your constituents send you packing. The only reason you changed your vote was that you saw the writing on the wall. Unfortunately you saw it way to late. No one as short-sighted and unresponsive to the wishes of the American people as you seem to be should ever become president. Obviously, we won't have to worry that you will. Hopefully your career in the Senate is over as well.
Back under your rock flim flam man.
To the person who said we have the government we deserve because we voted for them. Did the people in the old USSR have the government they deserved? There has to be a CHOICE before you can choose. We have been sold out by both parties and the system and the MSM media has been controlled to prevent a third.
I think many of the senators who voted for it on Tuesday thought they would be able to introduce amendments and possibly make the bill better.  But after the crap Sen. Reid pulled, they realized it was pointless because Reid wasn't listening to anything he didn't agree with.  As for Brownback, he's definitely sent the wrong message and I think his support is going to go way down.
I am a former and future Kansas resident. I lived in SE Kansas for 50 years before moving to Florida to finish my BSME. I look forward to working for a conservative Senatorial candidate and voting against Senator Switchback in 2010.
In "What's the Matter with Kansas" Thomas Frank cannot understand why the citizens of Kansas fail to vote in "their own self interest". What the citizens of Kansas consistently vote for is "the best interest of the United States", even though it might not be directly to their own direct benefit.
This bill was not in the best interests of the US. I believe voters in Kansas would be supportive of a conservative choice on the ballot in 2010. Senator Switchback surely will be running again, for this is sure to have ended his chances at the Presidential nomination.
So let me get this straight, he voted for the bill before he voted against it. Where have I head that before? Looks like tht deja vu again.

Sam is a living example of the 2 faced doublespeak spouting creature that we now call 'politicians'. Unfortunatly we DO deserve these people as our representatives given that we have voted for them and paid to support them. I'm sure that Sam will quickly discover that the line between an "incumbant' and "former" Senator is VERY thin indeed. He will no doubt discover this while sitting on the banks of the Campaign Finance River with John McCain as they both observe that it has dried up like the Rio Grande in August. There is NO 'switchback' to this sceneraio but there IS 'blowback'.

Perhaps these types will recall the root of the term 'POLITICS' .. as being the combination of the greek POLY (meaning numerous) and the species TICs (bolldsucking parasites) and rervert to the used car salesmen that they were destined to become.
I KEEP READING ABOUT HOW REPUBLICANS ARE AGAINST THIS, BUT IT'S A DEMOCRAT CONTROLLED CONGRESS WHO COULD NOT GET IT THROUGH. CAN I ASSUME THAT THERE WERE ENOUGH DEMOCRATS WHO WERE ABLE TO SEE WHAT A MISTAKE THIS WAS AND WHY ARE NONE OF THE NEWS AGENCIES STATING AS MUCH?
I don't get the Brownback vote switch. It seems so poorly thought out. This guy is not a political neophyte. He and his advisors must have forseen the flak he'd take for the switch. What confuses me is the apparent lack of upside to the switch. Even if he'd gotten a free pass on the switch..or, even better...let's say he voted "nay" right from the start...what then? He's supported this bill all along. A "no" vote only opens him to charges of being a flip-flopper and abandoning his position for perceived political gain. The fact that he did it so clumsily merely adds fuel to an inevitable fire. I just don't get it. It seems like an incredible miscalculation by an otherwise experienced politician. All I can say is, I'm glad he's not my candidate for president!
He voted for it, before he voted against it!
In addition to everything else, Brownback must be stupid to think he could get away with it.
iven that 34 Democrats and 12 Republicans voted for cloture, while 16 Democrats and 37 Republicans voted against, the result was primarily a defeat for the Democratic Party. My guess, however, is that the press's ability to spin it as a defeat for President Bush will cause them to go easier on the anti-comprehensive "reform" forces than would otherwise have been the case.
Hey Darren, are you going to vote for Lindsey the next time around?
Stick a fork in Sam Switchback, he's DONE, as are the rest of the spineless, weaselly senators who don't understand that it's their job to represent their constituents, 80% of whom do NOT support this bill according to every poll I've seen.  Then there was the galling arrogance the likes of which I can't recall hearing from Voinovich who, despite ultimately voting against cloture, hung up on Sean Hannity when asked if he'd read the bill or knew what the economic impact of passing the bill would be to the country.  Before Hannity scared Voinovich off the air, Voinovich said with a presumably straight face that the angry calls to his office in opposition to the amnesty bill were attempts to "intimidate" him.  Yep, voicing one's opinion to an elected representative is now "intimidation."  Un-bull-LEEVE-able.

It really is time for a third party...conservative independents, anyone?
Mark Murray, I think my post was de-noted. Still Crazy here.
SO, I'll sing it again "Torn between two lovers, feeling like a fool"-"torn between Two Lovers"-Mary MacGregor
Still, I don't know what happened. Could you re-post? Sorry about that.
Mark Murray, several notes in the last days  have been de-noted.I know its only music  so with a song in my heart I will make sure the music does not die.
Brownback is a fence straddler. Wait and see which side is winning and then vote.

Dennis, Gramnesty isn't my Senator, Mike DeMint is in my Senate district, but if he was, I wouldn't.
To those who say we deserve what we got, we elected them, etc., I echo others who say we haven't had any choice.  At best you vote to elect the lessor of two evils.

Those rich sentators that voted for this bill..I'd like to ask them, "So how many illegals live in your neighborhoods and disrupt your schools?"  I'm sure they send their kids to school with them too.  I'm sure they live next door and have them affect their property values.  NOT!

The solution is simple and could have been nipped in the bud long ago when Bill O'Reilly asked Bush what he was going to do about the border (before it was such a huge national issue)  and Bush replied..Bill, you're more worried about it than I am.  What an ass.

The solution is simple and the American public should not agree to less.  Build the fence, increase the border patrol, quit prosecuting border patrol for doing their job, punish businesses who hire illegals, (but how can they, our government employs illegals, too!) round up the lagging illegals and kick them back across the border, slam the door shut.  Also..quit making their kids citizens when the parents are illegals.

American parents of school age children should take note...your kids are getting the shaft because of the No Child Left Behind act.  Kids who can't speak English get preferential treatment to get them up to par.  Also..teacher's bonuses are based on ISTEP scores.  Teachers have to get the illegals kids up to par so they get their bonus.  American parents of school aged children..I hope you work with your kids at home..or they're going to fall behind.

The whole illegal issue is assinine and shouldn't even be an issue if our laws were followed in the first place.

There's a wise old saying that maybe the senators should take note of.. "A stitch in time..saves nine."  If you need for me to explain it, Senators, let me know.
Brownback just pulled a "Kerry" so he is out. Edwards looked weak raising money off of that "mean" Ann Coulter so he will soon be gone. The people won on the immigration "reform" bill defeat. Interesting day.
This move by Brownback doesn't surprise me at all.  I heard him on a radio talk show here in KS about a year ago -- talking about illegals and other issues.  He sounded dumb as a post.  I was embarassed for him.  I'll bet when he switched his vote it didn't even occur to him how bad it would look.  He's just that stupid.  Definitely not an asset to our state.

Senator Brownback's change on the Immigration bill is just one of numerous examples of his "flip flopping" campaign.

Brownback is a hypocrite who claims to be pro marriage and then “flip flops” on the issue by sponsoring a law creating a brute blockade regulating (preventing) marriages between Americans and foreigners by requiring three different background clearances at various stages of a relationship.
Senator Brownback claims to be pro marriage but has changed his stance on abortion. In 1997 when he first ran for Senator he was very queasy and quiet on the abortion issue (suggesting a neutral stance.

Shortly after being elected as a Senator for Kansas in the late 90's he "flip flopped" his stance on abortion to his current stance which is adamantly against abortion. (Of course this issue would have been forgotten had Brownback not run for President).

Senator Brownback as president would be a disaster. He took an oath to defend the constitution of the United States and then renigned on his oath by sponsoring the most undemocratic and un American law in the history of the USA… The International Romance Regulation Act a law that regulates marriage and romance, a legal pursuit. He "flip flops" on immigration, abortion, marriage, religion and other issues.

i believe brownbacks flip-flop is illustrative of the american soul.  we are torn.  we love immigration and the great mixture of cultures, yet we love the rule of law.  my wife is an immigrant and now a citizen.  it pays to follow the law.  its a difficult process that needs to be lightened.  its heart wrenching.  i understand brownback's delimna and support his challenging decision.
Sorry but none of you seem to see what is happening.
It dose not matter if that law would have pasted of not look under the North American Union and you will see. The public is so blind it is sickening.
