Immigration

A Washington Post news analysis observes that Bush admitted defeat after the immigration bill he supported died in the Senate yesterday. “It was, in the end, simply a statement of reality after the Senate buried his proposal to overhaul immigration laws. But for a president who makes a point of never giving in, even when he loses, it was a striking moment, underscoring the depth of his political travails. It took almost two years before Bush acknowledged, just months ago, that his effort to reshape Social Security had failed. Now he has surrendered in what was probably his last chance of securing a legacy-making second-term domestic victory.”

The Los Angeles Times sums up Bush's terrible week: "Bush began the week struggling to salvage his most important foreign and domestic initiatives: the war in Iraq and an overhaul of the nation's immigration laws. He ends it closer to losing both than at any time in his presidency. And in a remarkable reversal for a president who once commanded nearly unflagging loyalty from lawmakers in his party, those most responsible for his setbacks are Republicans."

The New York Times has this nugget: “Mr. Bush placed telephone calls to lawmakers throughout the morning. But members of his party abandoned him in droves, with just 12 of the 49 Senate Republicans sticking by him on the important procedural vote that determined the fate of the bill… The outcome was a bitter disappointment for Mr. Bush and other supporters of a comprehensive approach… The vote reflected the degree to which Congress and the nation are polarized over immigration. The emotional end to what had been an emotional debate was evident, with a few senior staff members who had invested months in writing the bill near tears.”

As mentioned yesterday, all the presidential candidates currently serving in the Senate (Democrat and Republican) voted for cloture to end debate on immigration bill -- all except Brownback, who voted for it and then voted against it. His Senate office and presidential campaign then released twin statements about his opposition to the bill, despite his earlier support. Giuliani and Romney also issued statements in opposition to the legislation.

McCain, who supported the legislation, said in his statement: “I am disappointed that the Senate was unable to conclude its debate on comprehensive immigration reform. However, the American people will not settle for the status quo – de facto amnesty and broken borders. I am hopeful that we will have another chance to address this critical national security issue that affects people throughout our country.”

Soon-to-be candidate Fred Thompson said on FOX yesterday, “Sometimes not making the wrong move is better than nothing at all. And I think that they had an immigration bill that didn't secure the border. I think that shows a disconnect with the American people that they thought that they could convince them.”

repubs are abandoning THE LOSER cause they don't want to lose the next election, none are abandoning THE LOSER cause THE LOSER abandoned America and the Constitution but are just out to save thier political hides.
The important question is where did Dick Cheney stand on the bill?
W may feel lower than a snakes belly in a wagon rut over Iraq and immigration, but he must be extremely pleased with the course of his conservative packed Supreme Court.  After the Indepence Day holiday break, I predict my DEMs will open up with full force on several fronts.  As I predicted, W is vulnerable to attack, and the vengence built up for years will come out vigorously.
Th GOP "Titanic" is sinking fast and the party members are jumping ship ....
Well they've heard from enough people on both sides, Write the freaking bill the people want. Stand up and be accountable for what you want in the bill. Stop trying to hide behind lawyer double talk, and back room deals you bunch of cowards.
You know who the real loser is here: the american people. Congress is so polarized that they probably can't even agree what to have for lunch. Politics in America sucks. Thank god for decent governors and mayors.
The man lied, I been saying for years, the people are  fed up. Now the "Note this" the president that
get rid of the "Illegal Immigrants will win the Election" its what the people want.
Until we set term limits on Congress, we'll continue to have professional politicians who are only interested in their careers rather than what is right for this county. That needs to be done just as the power of the lobbyists needs to be reduced. Ignore these two issues and we'll continue to go nowhere.
Here are the real losers, along with their families, loved ones and our country - thanks to Mr.Mission Accomplished Self Proclaimed Decider and Commander Guy...

BAGHDAD - Insurgents launched a deadly coordinated attack on an American combat patrol, the U.S. military said Friday, killing five troops and making this the deadliest quarter for U.S. soldiers in Iraq since the war began.
Any support from the administration is the "kiss of death." It is understood that bush is a criminal moron and that the Cheney administration is under the microscope. The topic of immigration is the last topic bush should have got behind if he really had any intention of leaving a legacy, this topic will never be resolved until the source of the problem is taken care of, the people who hire the illegals and those are the only friends bush has.  He should be spending all of his time trying to find a life raft instead of arrainging the deck chairs. His Titanic is going down.
Harry Reid said talk radio drove this debate. Maybe, but in insulting talk radio he also insulted the vast majority of American's who KNOW our government is not doing it's job. Ted Kennedy said that those of us who were against the bill are always saying what we're against but never what we are for. What?! Obviously yopu're plugging your ears Senator, because we are all shouting in a single, loud voice, "ENFORCE CURRENT LAWS, TIGHTEN BORDER CONTROL, HOLD ACCOUNTABLE THOSE WHO ARE VIOLATING OUR LAWS, INCLUDING THOSE WHO HIRE ILLEGALS!" Did you hear that?
BECAUSE WE ARE THERE, THEY ARE NOT HERE
Because we are there, they are not here.
However, Senator Specter, who supported issuing  supeonas for Miers and Taylor, now says that since the President has invoked executive privilege over papars and their testimony, the Seante Judiciary committee should just accept written testimony. Accept it as truth, even though the committee does know if the facts are true due to lack of access to the papers. Senator Specter got his whuppin' from the white House and caved again. And as for the war, Lugar talks but says he will not vote with any Democratic plan. "Actions speak louder than words."
BushCo is going down not with a bang, but a whimper. But BushCo is not through going down. Not by a long shot. I'm going to predict a 22% approval rating by Nov. '08, undercutting Nixon just a bit. Maybe the bang will come later.
They are here...they can freely cross our borders any time they wish. If we are really in the fight of our lives and the terrorists will stop at nothing to attack us, why does W leaqve our borders wide open, inviting an attack??? Because the support of BIG LABOR is more important than the security of the American people. Simple.
Darren ... in 2006 Wal-Mart was fined 11 million dollars for hiring illegals to clean their stores while their sales that year was over 200 billion. It was pocket change for Wal-Mart. I can guarantee you that none of the members of the powerful Walton Family will ever be held accountable for hiring illegals ...many in coporate america refuse to pay a living wage to legal americans and look to the undocumented who will work for nothing. In the meantime, companies like Wal-Mart and the billion dollar agricultre industry in america are filling the pockets of our politicans on both sides of the aisle. The problem is extemely deep rooted and corporate american can give a damm about laws so long as the profits are coming in.
Because we are there, they are not here? Hell, They are here already and planning you naive fool.
Kennedy and the rest need new hearing aids.  The alternative is too simple and NOT what they want to do because big business wants the cheap labor and all of them are counting on a bunch of Hispanic votes. Simply ENFORCE the laws we have, SECURE the borders - all of which is in their job description.  They take an oath to uphold the constitution which, I believe, says they are to PROTECT our borders and enforce the laws of our land.  Duh --- They KNOW what they are supposed to do but Dubya, Kennedy, Reid, etc. have their own ulterior motives for making millions of illegal aliens legal - a simple five letter word - MONEY.  This time the CITIZENS of this nation let them know we are fed up.  We have had illegal aliens shoved down our throats, "press one for Spanish", seen our ER's and schools going to hell in a handbasket until we have had enough.  Anybody who can say we are WORSE off for not making the same mistake that was pulled over on us in 1986 simply cannot accept the fact that Americans are for the moment anyway still the majority of this land and we do have a VOTE. We are fed up with seeing people from other nations speaking other languages DEMANDING rights here when they have NO right to be here.  We won't roll over and play dead anymore.  Either we some real effort at border security and enforcement on illegal alien employers or politicians are going to being to looking for new jobs. What the illegals do not understand is the thread of independence and unity that makes Americans what we are.  It is the thing that makes us fight each other like family members but circle the wagons and unite when our nation, our culture, our FREEDOM is threatened.  We have circled the wagons and we won't stop now until we find somebody to put in office who will do what we pay them to do - ENFORCE the laws of our land (don't try to change them to suit illegals from other lands),secure our borders (we don't accept that doing their jobs is contingent on OUR allowing amnesty for illegals in EXCHANGE for border security. What makes our nation great is that special something in the heart and soul of Americans that will gladly help those in need if they ASK or if we feel they need it, but don't try to TAKE what is OURS and then expect us to just quietly accept it.  Don't try to fool us by insinuating or actually saying we are too stupid to see what is going on as does Ted Kennedy and George Bush when they say there is no alternative to amnesty. Shouldn't even be debated - simply do your jobs and ENFORCE our laws. That will solve the problem - no more laws need to be made. Treat fake document peddlars just like drug dealers - confiscate everything they own, lock them up and throw away the keys. Secure the borders.  If you leave the door and the vault to the bank open - the robbers and theives will be pushing each other out of the way to steal what is not theirs.  If you leave the border open - thieves and robbers of a spot on our soil will be pusing each other out of the way to steal all they can. Enforce the law, secure the borders, mandate all employers put the ID system in place or shut them down.  How simple is THAT alternative, Mr. Kennedy? Go have another drink and give Harry Reid one too as he has been in the Nevada sun too long - neither of you can make sense of common sense.
Like I said before "The Federal Government has ZERO credibility when it comes to the Immigration issue" and thats why the scumbug Senators little secret bill failed.
Bush said that Congress needs to prove that it can come together on hard issues. What he acually meant was...Congress needs to prove that it can come together on hard issues and get what Dick and I want done, regardless of what the majority of the American people want.
I agree with Ricardo, it's business and corporate America not BIG LABOR that drives illegals to cross over.  If businesses and corporations that hired them were heavily fined or put out of business, or if they were required to pay a real market wage, ie the minimum wage, illegals would not have any jobs to cross over the border for.

I'm all for enforcement and closing the borders to only legal immigration.  But what do you do with the 12 million or more that are here?  How do you find them to throw them out?  That is the problem that nobody seems to be able to find an answer for.  Maybe what we need is a day that everyone in the country has to go to a government office and prove that they are a citizen or go back where they came from or be deported.  We would need the army to round everyone up but unfortunately right now they are otherwise engaged.
forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who tresspass against us.
Evidently the ignorant cowboy doesn't realize that his administration is what is "unacceptable". I wonder who showed up at the bill signing?
Makes my day!
Stamp out shrubs and repugs!
With Bush plummeting so quickly, we'd all better brace for a really big show of his fear mongoring, scare tactics machine to create some new imminent terrorist attack or foiled threat so that he can pick up a few points on his next poll. Cheney's probably about finished working out the details by now.
Well I'm sure Kennedy is done in the Senate after what he tried to pull. right democrats? right? you out there? HEEELLLOOOOOOooooo
Darn! Now I won't be able to see what would have happened when the "illegal" became "legal" and became "Americans" and, acccording to our politicians,  "Americans won't do the jobs undocumented workers will". So who would have been doing those jobs?
Brian:Ask the Brits how ''creative''their find was of a petrol bomb packed with shrapnel timed to go off near crowded Pickadilly this morning in London.[This,of course, raises an immediate point.A terrorist attack was planned and nearly executed which would have killed hundreds despite the fact that Tony Blair, seen as Bush ''poodle''has left the political stage].It thus appears, indeed,is a patent fact, that despite ''regime changes'',nations will continue to endure these horrors. What remains is what will be done in response, especially when these attempts reach a successful conclusion.
You think Bush is an idiot (and I do), here are a couple of things to think about.

1. Last Demo Debate, there was the question
"91% of the American People want English as official language. With a raise of hands, who would support that."
Only Gravel raised his hand.
Forget English, the point is 91%! All the front runners admitted that even if 91% of the American people supported an issue, the candidate would not support the American people!
How Arrogant! This is what Bush does now. Why would we elect a President that we know up front won't listen to the will of the people!
I don't know about the rest of you, but I won't be a sheeple anymore. WE elect them to be our voice in our government. If the majority wants something done, then it should be done. The majority of the "People" are not stupid. The details may be blurry, but they usually have the core of the issue nailed.
2. Notice how there were no questions about illegal immigration.
All of the Democratic candidates are for a Pathway to Citizenship (Amnesty). If you are against that, then you need to reevaluate who you are looking at voting for. If any Democrat is elected, we will be fighting this crap again. And the next time, it won't be bi partisan and the Democrats won't be listening to the grass roots. They think we can't govern ourselves.
It's time to vote Independent until we get a government that listens to US. That means ALL of our Elected Officials need to be hand picked by the American People, not by Party loyalty, but by common sense.
Yeah, count me in on the "Common Sense" Party.
Talk radio didn't kill this bill..the public will did. Thankfully, I'm still disappointed that the Democrats by large don't "get it" but hopefully the will once the 08 elections start. If the bill clearly went after big business exploiting workers and cheap labor I would support it. Thats the real problem...not only illegals but for the American worker.
Bush looked like he was going to cry when this did not happen.  I was surprised he did not get down and kick and scream like a spoiled rotten brat that he is.
We need to stand up and say STOP to dumbing down of America.  THis was bad for all of us.  Glad to see it failed in the Senate.
Dave, I guess that'll happen just about the same time people like yourself & jerry in texas vote out Lamar & corkscrew( you know the one that railroaded a very bright individual because of his skin color & Cornyn  (TX). Maybe even Kyl (AZ). Get real with your Racism dave(tn), You were implicit in attacking Harold Ford."DELUSIONAL THINKING BY COMMON SENSE AMERICAN'S IS OVER"
Amen JJGA.  I agree 100%.  These people are here illegally and use the education system, health care and maybe even the welfare system if they commit fraud.

These politicians are too worried about re-election rather than doing the right thing.

We need ENGLISH as the OFFICIAL LANGUAGE.

IF you want to live here, speak it and understand it.

Bill White, Houston Mayor, Democrat and GOP judge are working on cutting red tape for the vets in the Houston area.  We need more leadership like these people.

We need to send another message to the powers that be, stop fighting and positioning yourself for your re-election and pandering to the lowest common denominator and get your work done.

The defeat of this bill was a triumph for the American people.  We must now defeat John McCain and all the other Ted Kennedy Kiss-Äss phony republicans that supported it.  Then the republican party will get back on it's feet.
Dave Tn.  Get a grip.
May I share this item? It's about this topic of discussion.
PANHANDLING WORKS IF YOU'VE GOT THE RIGHT SIGN!
Jose and Carlos are panhandling at the freeway off ramp. Jose drives a Mercedes, lives in a mortgage free house and has a lot of money spend. Carlos only brings in $2.00 to $3.00 a day. Carlos asks Jose how he can bring home a suitcase full of $10.00 bills.
Jose says, "Look at your sign."  It reads: "I have no work, a wife & 6 kids to support."
Carlos looks at Jose's sign.  It reads: "I only need $10.00 to move back to Mexico."
i'm tired of all this talk and b.s., when do we impeach his a**?  that's the bottom line.  cheney too!  what the hell, the whole damn adminstration!!
I was proud that my 2 Democratic senators voted no------
Dennis E and all those who ask how to find the 12-20 million illegals - simple:  they will be marching again, waving their Mexican flag in our faces and demanding "rights" to which they are not entitled.

When they congregate, check all of them for legal status and I would be willing to bet that over 50% of them are illegal.  Take all the illegals to jail and then deport them!

Or is this too easy for our ICE, INS and other law enforcement to do?
Thanks to jjGA!  Finally we are seeing here what may be the beginning of a real backlash against the worst Congress and Administration in the history of the United States of America --  yes the United States and not that d**ned homeland the a**es try cramming down our throats.  Maybe, just maybe, we are finally becomming united again and hopefully our voices will only increase in volume.  I think we should all thank those b**tards inside the beltway for rewarding their incompetetance with yet another raise, although they tell all those who they supposedly represent, inflation is so low!  Anyone wanna buy a bridge?

Will in PA
I believe in ZERO  any brach of Goverment reports on.
I won't even take a prescription drug!
Health care is ruled by insurance companies and the

FDA(drug co)!!!!

Can not trust anyone in this corupt administration!
The real issue is:: "Illegal"? The present law states it is "Illegal" to have entered the United Stated by defying it's borders. Anyone caught shall be deported! I contend "Washington has fallen flat on it's "" A** "" ! Now the people have spoken, there are still 12 million Illegals roaming our streets "Right"" Right"! It's time to now tell Washington ""Deport" these Illegals !  Inforce the Law!!!!
I think you all have missed the boat on this immigration thing.
The reason nothing is ever done about illegal immigrants is because of a lack of political will on both sides.
The Republicans don't want to change anything because their supporters are the one who hire the cheap labor and the Democrats won't change anything because Latinos historically vote Democrat and they don't want to piss off one of their major demographics.
If the powers that be really wanted to do something about illegal immigration, the problem could be solved tomorrow.
Massive fines for hiring illegal immigrants, ones that really hurt, size of the fine depending on the size of the company.
If wew were to do this, employers would think twice before hiring even a suspected illegal.
RoBoTech, Arab, AL ~ we did NOT elect Bush.
Is it not a SHAME? We Americans knowingly see Illegals every day! In AZ it is where the white man is a eye sore, meaning thousands of illegals have highway paths beaten into the desert floor. The Illegal has trashed our desert, once beautiful now a garbage dump! This year alone $158,000.00 dollars paid to private contractors to pick up garbage along the border region. But this is just tax payer money  "what the Hell""! Americans have plenty of money "their Rich and some famous"?  What we are when it come to the truth " More afraid of what the law will do to us if "We" take the law into our own hands!!!!!  The Law protects the Illegals, Try to do a citizen arrest and find out how much time ""YOU"" will spend in "JAIL"!!! Illegals are smuggled in by the thousands per day!!!  Maybe they need to be smuggled out!!!!  That would be a real winner!!!!

Washington is nothing but a bunch of Paper Hangers, Yet we already know that for a fact, that's why we pay the big bucks to send a clown to Washington!!!
All weekend the media rhetoric since the great AMNESTY failed (thanks to our efforts that MUST grow stronger and not cease) all they can focus on is how this is going to affect the VOTES in the next prez election!! Excuse me - do we PAY them to make laws for political gain and not what is best for our nation? Sadly, I must answer yes.  It is really annoying as hell to hear the pols say in one breath they are working for the good of OUR nation and in the next throwing daggers at each side saying this "failure" is going to hurt those who voted FOR America for a change.  We know WHY they did - the pressure from home - not any grand idea of doing what is BEST for our country and our citizens. With all the media pundits -- again and again the same old story of no alternative and what a grand opportunity they missed because it "FAILED".  Nothing FAILED except amnesty for 12-20 million illegal aliens! We all KNOW that is the only thing they were concerned with - that is the ONLY thing they were hellbent and determined to do.  When WE spoke and the American PEOPLE succeeded -- oops it was a failure.  Sorry, but this American sees this as the greatest VICTORY of the people of this great nation in decades. Please keep calling, emailing, faxing and visiting your reps offices.  If your rep voted against it - they NEED desperately to hear from us how much we do appreciate that vote.  We should also thank those senators in all other states other than our own who stood for us against amnesty for illegals. Of course, since they did not get what Dubya and co. wanted, Reid is going to bring up something else according to the media that will address some border security and legalizing SOME of the illegals!! What part of NO don't they understand?  I guess the same part of NO WMD's in Iraq.  Perhaps our next movement should be introducing them to the ENGLISH version of NO - apparently it means something in some other language they are promoting in DC.  We said NO, enough of our senators said NO - Get a clue - no is no is no.  It will still be NO King George when you try again. We should all call to task those politicians who are worried about what this will do to the pres election? Are they running for the prez of Mexico or US?   It isn't 1776 but we are in the fight of our lives again for freedom, sovereignty, English language -- the very same our ancestors fought another King George to gain, we now must fight this one to keep. We come from good stock - they won against tyranny and so will we. Happy INDEPENDENCE DAY citizens of the UNITED States of America.  One battle down and the war wages on.
Ed Saunders- It seems to me that there are SO many American Citizens that are ticked about the illegals, any gain in Hispanic votes would be more than offset by lost votes from those same citizens.  Why does everyone insist on keeping that "Democrats want the votes" nonsense in play?  It's the same old Swift Boater thing, and the "liberal nedis" thing- keep saying it enough, and it will become true.
