Primary vs. General Election funds

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
In an effort to set expectations the day before the second fund-raising quarter ends, the Obama campaign wants to make clear the distinction between primary and general election money. In a memo e-mailed by Obama's camp, they point out that “the only figure that truly matters is the total money raised for the primary.”

“The eventual nominee will be able to raise sufficient funds for the general election, so there is no strategic advantage to raising general election funds now,” the campaign writes. “In reality, the funds raised for the general election serve no purpose other than inflating a candidate’s total.”

The Obama campaign's obvious intent here is based on the expectation that Clinton will have raised a lot of general election funds as she did in the first quarter.

More so than the content of the message, I'm guessing the real point of this release was just to keep people talking about this. Good work - I'm starting to see a better coordinated communication effort from this campaign. Of course the content is important to Obama, too. When Hillary's number is released, that figure will be the story - its gonna be a huge sum. It will change the news about fundraising. But Obama certainly is hoping all the reports add that qualifier about how Clinton has already tapped out a lot of her supporters, who not only can't give more for the primaries but who already have donated the max for general election, too. And any news report that includes that will most likely include the dramatic number of Obama contributors.
So this is what our elections have come to...whoever has the most money wins.  No wonder this country is in such a mess.  Money means nothing if the candidate has their head up their forth point of contact (I'm sure we can all figure where that is).  Why don't we all just forget how much money these "candidates" have sucked out of peoples pockets and start listening to what they're saying; their's a new concept.
The former Democrats are no longer just raving Socialists, but Billary is leading them into the Marxist territory of National Socialism.  Friends, this is a perfect parallel to the way Hitler and the Nazis destroyed Germany.  First its "political correctness" which is nothing more than tyranny with a smile and a feeble attempt at denial of free speech; now Billary is advocating the silence of talk radio in another feeble attempt to stop anyone disagreeing with their version of totalitarianism.  If anyone remembers the Militia that was in the spotlight during Billarys first term, the militia will be out in force if National Socialism gains power.  What power they cannot get by the vote, they will subvert to get.  Socialist, no Marxists, are vicious tyrannical maniacs that seek only total control and complete domination.
Greg, it may be unfortunate but there's the way things ought to be and the way things are. Anyone reading this blog in June probably has enough interest to hear what all the candidates have to say. For the rest of the voters, money equates to an ability to get message out. That's why Romney is considered top tier, and some consider him the frontrunner, despite pretty low polling numbers. Notice how he was able to target spending in Iowa and New Hampshire and dramatically raise his numbers there in the past weeks. They candidates without money won't be heard. Plus, people opening their checkbooks for a candidate is a pretty good indicator of how much excitement that candidate is generating.
will, shut up.
Will

Though I am no Hillary fan when speaking of totalitarian powers being encompassed in the head of state perhaps you should look no further than the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave and his Vice President. our country was established, brilliantly I might add, with a series of checks and balances between the three branches of government so that no one branch can gain any form of dictatorial powers over the people. Regardless of the situation (i.e. the endless GWOT) claiming the right to illegal unwarranted wire taps, the right to imprison and hold incommunicado any American citizen without charging them of crimes, issuing signing statements essentially decreeing you are exempt from following the law you are about to sign into existence, refuting that your office is not part of the executive branch and therefore not required to submit to Congressional oversight and the countless other efforts made at consolidation of and isolation from our laws to empower the executive branch is in my eyes, far more dangerous to our liberty and a closer step to a Communist dictatorship than any efforts at socialized medicine...

...where were the militias you speak of when our freedoms were taken?
Greg Waite from Waterford you are missing Obama's point. He has 252,000 individual donors. That means that a 252,000 people control and actively participate in his campaign not a few lobbyists.

That's democracy where I come from.
Will Jameson: Your post is ignorant of basic history and of the political situation in contemporary America.  I know that in order to sleep at night you have to convince yourself that liberals are somehow the next incarnation of Hitler (although God help any liberal who makes the more reasonable comparison of the Bush administration to the definitnion of facism: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=fascism). This is a perfect example of what makes the GOP unpalletable to the majority of Americans.  The GOP used to have principles.  I have always disagreed with how those principles when implemented on a policy level but I could at least respect the philosophy behind the policies.  Now days, the right wing is nothing but a bunch of wildeyed fanatics, beholden to a fail President.  They are myopic when it comes to analyzing the effects of the leader's decisions in office and ideologically paralyzed to the point that no one can have a debate with them without being called a traitor, a communist, or a Nazi. Maybe if you bothered to attempt to convince someone with your posts you'd be taken seriously.  But when you come on to these boards and do nothing except accuse people you've never met of being akin to the most evil group in human history you are far more likely to sway moderate Republicans and independants to vote Democratic and to convince Democrats to donate money to the party and to liberal advocacy groups.  Smear and fear no longer works.  Start making reasonable posts or join Jerry at the kool aide table.  But, more than anythhing, please don't think that writing diatribes about the left being akin to mass murders is affective in any place other than your own mind.
Will-

Have you lived in America for the last 7 years? Look around, buddy-- your description is 100% accurate for the rule of Bush&Cheney, not the "Billary" monster.

The totalitarians are running the nation right now; explosive spending, hyper-partisan "governing", trumped up War, the ignoring of the Rule of Law and the subversion of the will of the majority of the People.

The danger of totalitarianism doesn't exist on the Left anymore; it is thriving on the Right.

Q: Who's your candidate?  Fred Thompson?
Will who? Will who ever answered WILL, WILL you please stop. WILL won't listen.
The man knows how to Play  the Game. Let's hope that with the defeat of Corparate America's Amnesty Bill, will continue with the Defeat of Corparate America's stranglehold on The United States of America. "DELUSIONAL THINKING BY COMMON SENSE AMERICAN'S IS OVER"
Just to clarify, Hillary's PAC contributions are only 1%.  The vast majority of her contributions also come from individuals.  And btw...this no PAC thing is new for Obama; he has accepted PAC money in the past.
Carrie, Obama did? I thought he announced his no PAC thing at the start of his campaign? Oh, do you mean his campaign for the Senate? By the way, if I understand correctly, he also isn't accepting donations from lobbyists and those under the age of 16. The lobbyist reasons are obvious, but I wonder how many other candidates are getting donations from children? In reality, kids aren't giving these candidates any money. Their rich parents are, as a way to donate more than the legal limits for themselves as individual adults. It may be a small thing on Obama's part, but I'm a little impressed with the gesture just the same.
If only 1% of her money comes from PACS, why bother accepting it???
After listening to Hillary's debate tonight I'm more  determined to vote for her.She refuses to be put in a what if position.Questions with what if attached cannot be answered truthfully by anyone. Most women run the households today.Keeping the peace is one thing most women are good at .hillary is hardworking and intelligent .What we need is someone who is not a dictator to bring this war to an end .That will not be an easy task nor done quickly. Our troops will need to withdraw saftly. Some will need to stay behind to protect the ones that are withdrawing. No one wants this war to end more than me. My oldest son has to go back to Iraq a second time early next year .This war is senseless and many more will die before Bush is out of office.
I don't feel safe anymore because our country is at odds with other countries .We need to keep our troops here to secure our borders. My children ,grandchildren and greatgrandchildren will not have a safe place to live in their life time . I listen to all the candidates on both sides. There are several with many good ideas. I also believe being either  party without regard to other 's opinion is just voting in another GW Bush  .I've been an independant voter for many years. Now more than ever it is important for America to pull together to strenghen our nations .Don't  just listen to the candidates say what they will  do as President.  We have heard that many times before.
We need someone who is willing to listen to Americans and follow through .I hope Hillary becomes President because I believe she will work hard to put our country back together .
I support the Hillary campaign. I have seen Hillary and I am convinced she is the one. After watching the debate that took place in las Vegas, I wondered:How did Edwards felt to be attacked back? He critized Hillary of being two face. If Hillary is two face then, he is two face as well. He has voted for things in the past that has affected the country greatly.I do not dislike Edwards or Obama, but I think they should stop attacking their own party members. They are all candidates with great potential, but only one is the one that we need =HC
