Romney: 'My dog likes fresh air'

From NBC's Mark Murray

Per WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh: "Romney answered questions about a Boston Globe feature story that mentions how he strapped his dog's cage, with the animal inside, to the top of his family's car during a 12-hour road trip 24 years ago. He said Thursday that the pet enjoyed the experience, and he took a shot at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, a group that has labeled his actions as cruelty."

"You know, PETA has not been my fan over the years," Romney said. "PETA has been after me for having a rodeo at the Olympics and were very, very upset about that. PETA was after me when I went quail hunting in Georgia. And PETA is not happy that my dog likes fresh air."

Another opportunity for MSNBC to boost ratings post Coulter.  Chris, get a PETA spokesperson, a research scientist who tortures dogs and a cartoon dog -- how about Scooby Doo?  Then, on Scarborough, get Romney to decry the smear and say we're too politically correct, accompanied by Kinky Friedman riding a German Shepard.
How is this a problem? I'm no fan of Romney or Bush or Neocons, but seriously, grill him for something worthwhile.
It is common knowledge that dogs love to stick their heads into rushing air when in cars, boats, trains etc.
Even if you could call this "cruel", it is only cruel in the nitpickest sense possible.
Kind of like the same way that stealing a kiss is technically assault and battery (even if you DID buy her dinner).
Why did the Romney camp think is this a good story? Friggin' weird. This is a man who prides himself on not issuing one pardon during his lackluster tenure as Gov. of the Commonwealth of Mass but would consider pardoning Scooter Libby if he was president...isn't this the same Mittens to have been a lifelong hunter - when in fact he'd only hunted twice?
He need to be strapped on a car and sprayed after he defecates on himself...

By the way - here's the man Romney refused to pardon TWICE, this decorated Iraq combat veteran made the mistake of shooting another kid with a bb gun when he was thirteen. It didn't draw blood.(I had bb gun wars with my friends at that age. Yeah, I know its unsafe but it wasn't as unsafe as the jousting we did on our bikes)He wanted to become a cop and continue to serve, but his record wouldn't allow it. Nice Mittens...from the AP by Steve LeBlanc

Decorated Iraq war veteran Anthony Circosta seemed like an ideal candidate for a pardon from then-Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for his boyhood conviction for a BB gun shooting. Romney said no — twice — despite the recommendation of the state's Board of Pardons.

At age 13, Circosta was convicted of assault for shooting another boy in the arm with a BB gun, a shot that didn't break the skin. Circosta worked his way through college, joined the Army National Guard and led a platoon of 20 soldiers in Iraq's deadly Sunni triangle.

In 2005, as he was serving in Iraq, he sought a pardon to fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer.

"I've done everything I can to give back to my state and my community and my country and to get brushed aside is very frustrating," said Circosta, 29, of Agawam, Mass. "I'm not some shlub off the street."

In his presidential bid, Romney often proudly points out that he was the first governor in modern Massachusetts history to deny every request for a pardon or commutation during his four years in office. He says he refused pardons because he didn't want to overturn a jury.

Let's sum thisup - Lt. Circosta put himself through school, received his commission and won a bronze star in Iraq. He wants to be a cop and continue to serve his community, however he made the mistake of shooting a BB gun at another boy when he was thirteen, and Romney refused to pardon him - twice. And there are some that think this man would make a good president? Character counts, and so does the lack of it, Mr. Romney.
Dear Ms. Cox: I am not an American, but I strongly prefer Mitt Romney to be the next American President because I know that he is the most qualified man among the rest. When you start tearing him down I'm also starting to feel that Americans are becoming more IDIOTICS. Your issue to tear down Mitt Romney will not do anything good for your country. We, outside the US are watching your people in this coming election and it would be a great shame if your people choose someone who is not better than Mitt Romney. I think Americans should  open their eyes and try to look at the reality... your country is being under attack by satanic jihadists. You need a man who is strong enough to stand up and defend your country. You need a man who could turn around your economy for a better tomorrow. Tested and proven, it is only Mitt Romney who is your great chance. Believe it or not! --- from Hong Kong
I wish PETA girl would come back to Corpus Christi, Watching her screaming and yelling at people walking into that sandwich shop while I was sitting there eating my overstuff roast beef sandwich, that was just too unreal.  The way her eyes just bulged out of her skull everytime somebody would come out with a meat sandwich LOL.  And finally, PETA, if you are going to run naked around the outside of a store naked, at least make sure the girls are HOT!
PETA is a good-for-nothing congregation of deranged individuals who place animal life above human life.  They support domestic terrorism- like fire-bombing labs that use rats and murdering medical researchers who test medicines and procedures on animals.  Don't believe it?  Look at PETA tax returns- which are public because they are non-profit group.  You'll find them supporting terrorists like Rodney Coronado (arrested 13 times for violence and vandalism in the name of animal rights)  and the Animal Liberation Front, who admits to destroying property and criminally harassing people who use lab animals.
I loved his response. Seriously, why should this matter in a presidential race? At least he offered the dog a vacation.... :)
Having read the specifics of what happened, it still seems at a minimum a serious lack of judgment on his part. The dog was obviously distressed. And it reads like something out of National Lampoons Family Vacation. I don't think it'll change anything. I wasn't a fan of his anyways, but I hope he has gained some common sense over the years if he's elected president. (shaking my head)
I knew it all along, Romney is a Communist!!!!!
The logic of animal cruelty doesn’t make sense. It said in the article that the dog had been on the roof several hours before Tagg noticed the problem. It seems to me if the dog was really scared, this would have happened immediately. It also said in the article that Mitt had made a windshield for the dog; sounds like riding in a jeep or convertible to me. Also, if Mitt was cruel to animals he probably wouldn’t have stopped immediately to clean up the dog. I don’t know sometimes when I ride in a car with 5 kids, I’d rather be strapped to the roof!

Would all the female and girly men PETA die hards give it a rest?  The dog was in a CARRIER. Not a WIRE CAGE behind a windshild!  Dang!  You even complain when the circus comes to town or when there's a rodeo and ruin it for the rest of us.  You're obnoxious and rude and always trying to tell people how to live their lives.
My Message to PETA, HaHaHa. if that's the only thing people will attack Mitt about, then we have a winner for the the Republicans!! I am not an avid Romney fan, I am considering Romney, Paul, or Giuliani, but please, for a politician, there's got to be more dirt on Romney than how he transports his dog. It's safe, and the dog loves it!!It might be spoiling, but hey, what the hell does that have to do with his ability to lead the nation.
This is a ridiculous story, as many have said. My point is there's the way things are and the way things ought to be. Politics can turn on the ridiculous. You can't rant and rave against that all you like, but you might as well yell at the wind (no doggy carrier pun intended). This story is funny in a weird way, and those stories stick. Just like HW Bush and the supermarket checkout scanner. Or Dukakis and that oversized tank helmet. Or Kerry and whether he actually threw ribbons over the White House fence when he said he had thrown his medals over... more than 24 years before his presidential campaign. Or Edwards haircut this time around. All of these were ridiculous stories, too. I'm a spectator - mostly love watching the races from an undecided perspective. I was impressed with Romney's fundraising and his ability to move numbers where he spent money. But this story, while not a final nail by any means, is going to hurt him. If more incidents of either 1) Chevy Chase like activity or 2) indifference to animals surface... then it starts looking like a trend. Just like Gore with the exaggerations. He could survive one or two. When it got to be more, it looked like a trend. As I previously said regarding Edwards haircut, this dog story won't kill Romney but its not going away neither.
I heard Mitt also sometimes straps his wife on top of the car when she doesn't do what he commands.
So one of the kids is sent to the back of the car to sit with the luggage and the dog is on the roof?  I clearly remember a family vacation -- Mom, Dad, three kids and our beloved dog packed into the station wagon driving cross country.  I also clearly remember looking out the back window and seeing one of the suitcases that was meticulously strapped to the roof by my anal-retentive father, falling off the roof and bouncing down the highway.  If a suitcase laying flat in the roof rack can come loose, what about a carrier/cage large enough to hold an Irish setter?!  And what a novel idea -- putting the suitcases in the rooftop luggage rack so the dog can ride in the car with the kids!!

While I certainly can't agree with Romney's decision making, I want to make it very clear I am NOT siding with PETA.  How hypocritical for them to talk about appropriate pet care when their real agenda is to do away with pets in the home.
The man that tied his his dog to his car roof, does not make much sense, and why was the man not pulled over, this is not a chevy chase movie vacation.  There could have been changes in the 2004, if more people would educate and study your canidates, and make the best choices, the dog, or a kid would not be tired to the top of a car.
The dog that was tied to the roof of a car, why was the man not pulled over, this no Chevy Chase movie, that is called vacation.  The 2004 election, people said they wanted change, and were going to vote right.  If people educate and study their canidates much better, and make the best choices, no dog, or child would be tied to a roof of a car.
This is no Chevy chase movie called vacation.  No dog or child should be tied to a roof of a car.  If people would educate and read you people would know that this is abuse.
This is no Chevy Chase movie vacation, no dog, or child, should be tied to a roof of car.
For all of you have think it is so cool for dogs to stick their heads out of a car window....

Have you ever seen a dog sticking its head out of a window and fall head first onto the pavement? I have--it wasn't my dog but it was in the car in front of me. The dog survived largely due to the fact that I stopped my car right behind them and put my hazard lights on long enough for the owner to get out of the car and get to the dog.

Have you ever seen a dog sticking its head out of the window get its nose caught and cry out in pain when somebody hit the automatic window button and inadvertantly closed the window? Again, I have.

Everytime they put that dog on the roof, even if he enjoyed it, put him at great risk.

Forget the whiney kids who wanted to take the dog along. If the dog doesn't fit....BOARD IT!
Just another example of "compassionate conservatism."
the only thing to do is to put Romney on the top of a car in a cage for a trip and let him see how it feels particularly if it is cold. The forward force of the car creats wind let alone the wind. that is why you see things so far back from a car that has lost something
Tell ya what, T. Shaffer, I'll stick you in my cage on top of my truck and we'll barrel-@$$ down the freeway at 70 for 12 hours with no toilet stops and we'll see how you dig it, all right? Just a dog... pleeeze! LOL...
I wouldn't put a dog on the top of my car, but having ridden in the back of a pickup truck, I have to say that I believe that the dog might have liked riding there.

How's it any different than riding a motorcycle? He obviously was smart enough to attach the carrier so it didn't fall off. And how does anyone know they didn't let the dog out for potty breaks? It's not like you can control when a dog has to go . . . Besides, if the dog really did have an accident in stress, and maybe they realized it wasn't such a good idea, what could Romney do about it at that point???  Leave the dog on the side of the road? Sounds like there wasn't room in the car.

Don't forget, also, that was a different time . . . before children's car seats, seat belt laws, etc., etc.
Ok, it's weird to strap the carrier to the roof but "cruel"?  Nope, I gotta tell ya if you think that's cruel you do NOT know dogs at all!  Since when have ANY of my dogs been "terrorized" when sticking their heads outta the window of my truck when we're on the road?  They're NOT.  What's the difference?  Open window or on the roof in a carrier?  Sorry folks, the dog had diarrhea before the trip even started.
It is difficult trying to compute the time we have exhausted searching for gun dog webpages.
