Dems getting back to Iraq issue

Congressional Democrats will spend July getting back to the issue of Iraq, trying different legislative ways to force a troop withdrawal and re-gain the favor of disaffected anti-war voters in the bargain.

"We have many arrows in our quiver, and we are sharpening them," Speaker Nancy Pelosi says of the measures under consideration. She announced that the House will once again take up legislation that would require a withdrawal to begin within 180 days, with a goal of complete transition into a non-combat role by April 1, 2008.

This time, the move will NOT be attached to a funding bill, but on a measure that authorizes Defense Department operations. Many Democrats felt that they had put themselves in a box last time out, as they had pledged not to cut off funding for troops in the field yet were using a funding bill to try and end the war. We all know how that ended up.

Other steps are under consideration:
-- a move to effectively rescind the Fall 2002 authorization of the war in Iraq;
-- legislation that would force the closing of Gitmo;
-- language that would forbid the establishment of permanent military bases in Iraq;
-- and an attempt to use the regular Defense Department funding bill to bring an end to American involvement.

GO to it people. I hope one of those quivers
is loaded for shrubs.

Please implement all of the above.
Use every sharp arrow and
do not miss the bulls eye.
They could always add it to the invade Sudan bill seeing how they were all so gung ho last night. They should at least find out that Sudan DOES have oil, and is a country run by Muslims. It's Muslims killing Muslims who aren't Muslim or Arab enough.
The mice are roaring.
Dave, Karl Rove has taught you well grasshopper. When there is an inconvenient issue, change the topic.
Where is the Story of this administration ignoring Supponea's from Congress? Get your head's outta Hillary's butt & tell us what's up with That.
Clinton taught you well Russell. Whenever someone points out the truth about what democrats have said bring up the Boogie Man, and the vast right wing conspiracy.
damn Russell, how roomy is that glass house that suddenly dropped over you?
The topic of this session was supposed to be about the current desires of the US House to bring our troops home from the 2nd worst quagmire in our history. It cannot occur soon enough. I suppose the "surge" is working quite well? We've had a huge loss of US life in recent weeks, with no stop to the insurgency and their bombings. Yessiree, we're moving into high gear now! We're gonna clean up I-raq. Of course, once we leave, the mercenaries will continue on. What an awfull mess. Gee, thanks Wolfie, Rummy, Dickie and the guy who's supposed to be running it all, Dubya. I really don't know what the MIC will do without you, Dickie.
Me?  I do what I am told.  Homeland Security has issued a special fuchsia alert (p.2563,c.3975775 of the Save Your Ass on Your Own, Just Stay Very Afraid Manual for Real Patriots in Time of War) in order to facilitate the immediate implementation here on pristine Patriot Shores, the fear of all Britain because of... a booby-trapped car.  They say, and I quote for all of you who are not sufficiently soiling your pants: "Be especially VIGILANT in watching your neighbor's suspicious activities."

Right now I have my binoculars trained on my Mexican-American (read: brown) neighbor's McMansion across the street.  Of course the male person of interest himself is at work now, smuggling Al Qaeda into San Diego, but his wife is out by the pool... yes indeedy... looks suspicious, very suspicious.  Can't talk now... Film at 11.
Turn those binoculars towards the sun, and keep an eye on our real threat GLOBAL WARMING. I can't wait to see what the professional fear mongers do if they get back in power. Suddenly terrorism will be an issue.
Maybe global warming explains my neighbor's wife's state of attire... well at least I'm fortunate not to live in a place where the sun don't shine.  I wonder if their Porsche in the driveway is booby-trapped. Dave, I am getting so afraid that I am tempted to join you in the root cellar.  On second thought...
Well, since the troop surge did NOTHING, and Bush and the republiCANTS are doing NOTHING but restisting this country's desire to get the hell outta' Iraq, I say HEAR-HEAR to Reid, Pelosi, Feingold, Murtha and Webb!
Personally, I like the idea of de-authorizing Bush's (and thusly Dick Cheney's and Karl Rove's) authority to use the military in iraq.
"I support the troops" just as much as the next guy does.
But, enough's, enough.
The whole mess over there was nothing but a political ploy to begin with. It was never intended to make this country any safer. Rove used it beautifully to win a majority in both houses back in 2002, and kept that majority in 2004, and got Bush relected with it too.
Absolutely BRILLIANT political posturing.
Unfortunately, our military was used like chips in a poker game, and for that the GOP should be punished for a very LOOOOONG time.
Fight the good fight my Democratic friends.
Bring an end to this war, while implementing effective security measures that are CONSTITUTIONAL here at home, and you will be the majority party for at least the next two decades!
Ho Hum.......Just Nancy and her clumsy dance partner Harry trying to find new ways to surrender to terrorists.  My fear is that if we leave now with the job unfinished, we'll be back in this part of the world quite soon with much longer odds against us.......
Well, you got the name right anyway.....CRAZY Dave.
The rest of it is just pure reprobate.
Dave and Bush Republican:  There's still lots of time and lots of openings down at your local Army, Marine, and National Guard recruiting offices to show your unequivocal support for Bush's war. Why waste your time blogging when you could be out there on the front lines backing the Mission Accomplished Commander Guy?  Or how about a position with Blackwater, Bush's surrogate army?  They need lots of super patriots like you to keep us safe from the terrorists and obviously, in your view, those pesky Democrats.  So join the surge, grab a flak jacket - and hope and pray that should you get maimed and injured (or worse) the VA will have space and provide adequate care for you before the next round of Bush/Cheney cuts in VA spending).  But don't count on it.
Crazy Dave, back slowly away from the crack pipe
An emergency cabinet meeting and on tv all day long about England. For the troops that have died this month---oh,just an afterthought.20 headless corpses in Bagdahd---just small potatoes--another blip.I wish our government and our media paid that much attention to our dead and dying, and oh yes BY BOMBS----------
the dems also need to require Iraq war funding needs to be part of the entire budget, not just a supplemnet.  what does that tell our troops...they supplemental and not part of the regular budget? put this with the lack of medical services provided to the returning vets, and you have to question how much this admin supports our troops.  Heck, the civilian population has equipped the troops better than this admin. If this admin is so gung-ho and "stay the course", why haven't they equipped them properly?  Why shouldn't people want their children, spouses, brothers, sisters etc back home and safe?
That war in Iraq must really stick in their craw, crazy Dave changed the subject again. Wait! did I hear breaking glass? No, just breaking wind.
I think the simplicity of the Iraq debate shows weakness in our two-party system. It's either "stay the course" without any new approach, or withdraw. I think Joe Biden has it right- the only realistic and responsible action we can take without leaving Iraq in ruin is to partition the country, with the oil wealth being the only centralized thing. Factions in all three groups- sunni, shi'a, kurd- have expressed their desire to have separate, autonomous nations (the kurds virtually already have one). The only way to stop the sectarian bloodshed in Iraq is to separate the armed factions. Only then will Iraqis have a chance at security, reliable electricity, reliable water, steady education, and greater economic opportunity.
Mark Thieme-Thanks from a grateful nation. As you well know, the price of freedom is eternal vigilence. Keep glassing those neigbors. Ahmm, do you have a digital camera?
Obviously it is time for Congress to get together and rewrite the Constitution in such a way as to remove the Presidency and the Executive Branch from it's position of unequaled power; we no longer need a king to go throwing us into wars, to turn the US Attornies into political puppets attacking the opposite party and to make a mockery of our assembly of laws that we have worked so hard and long to balance Justice for all.  The Executive Branch of our government has been turned on it's head and we now have lawyers working for the Justice Dept. that are doing their best to find ways for the President to not have to obey the already written laws of this land.  If the position of our President is that he is so all powerful that he does not need to heed the words of our Forefathers, Congress, the Courts and the people of this great nation at large and willfully breaks laws left and right then it is time to plain get rid of the position entirely.  We can do quite well without the Executive branch of the government as it presently is.  The US Attorney General's office should be totally non-partisan and all of the branches of the Military should report directly to Congress and the Courts can do their job of balancing as they have been.  The present Judicial Activists that have invaded our courts at the behest of our misguided Executive need to be re-reviewed by the House and Senate for that matter.  If the matter of going to war was put before the full Congress then we would have a much better chance of avoiding the sort of tragedy that has befallen us with Iraq, where a small group of individuals steered us into war with a pack of lies and deliberately misinterpreted intelligence and then witheld the truth, attacking anyone who dared to call them out on the matter.  To say that all communication within the Executive Branch is offlimits to Congress is Ludicrous, this Nation deserves to see what those individuals said, how they said it and have the truth of the entire Conspiracy to commit these crimes against the Republic for which we stand.  The Executive Branch is NOT immune to the laws which we all must follow and if it will not obey the laws which it is entrusted to uphold then it is time to Prune the Executive Branch severely, remove the offices of President and Vise-President and turn the entire rest of that arm of government into an totally non-partisan working group reporting to Congressional Groups and the Courts directly.  Without the fight between parties as to control this country like kings warring against each other and then forcing their rule upon the rest of us I believe that we could get down to actually GOVERNING this Nation of ours.  If ANY part of our Constitution is to be changed then it is my belief that we start right there, Remove the President from his obscene power and let the People Rule, not another Puppet King!!!!
J. Merrell.............hear hear brother!
R. Merrill, are you saying that they would take you?  I think we are half a man short in that regard.  After listening to Dingy Harry and Nothin Nancy talk about all the progress the congress has made since they took it over(which lasted about 30 seconds), they just ought to take the summer off.
Merely, stan...just merely, barely, infinitely insignificant stan
Surrender to 'em turrurists Dave? WTF? Please tell me what the everloving hell job it is that we are supposed to accomplish, aside from God forsaken blood for oil, that we are tasking?  No answer? Shut the hell up, sit down, and leave the rhetoric rah rah be.
My previous post (not posted....yet)  was an idea for the Democrats to take a look at, as a way of cleaning up the Executive Branch and eliminating the greatest cause of electioneering and dragging us into foreign entanglements.  I am hoping that it does get posted, even though I did not lable it as "Something that the Dems Might Want To Consider"  under their congressional lineup.
Repubs are sore LOSERS. Stop blaming everyone else and put the blame where it belongs. In Bush and Cheneys lap.
We are spending about 1/4 of the war budget on
the largest US embassey in the world, in Baghdad.
Fortified to a fare thee well, which is already
taking fire on a daily basis. The mission is
a farce from the beginning. Take the loss of
stupidity and stand back. Support democracy or
republic govt somewhere it has a chance
To have our military running around over there in uniforms, with little reliable intelligence and with a population that is scared stiff to provide any because they have seen other families get blown up is nuts.
Fighting a urban guerilla war in uniform? Put a big target on them why don't we.
we went there for oil and now every country that has oil is gearing up. Surely there are smarter ways than invasions to influence countries. Just about every ecomomy in the world needs America's spending
Thanks Gary, It's lonely out here sometimes.  By the way, I am selling the photos on EBay.  4th of July Patriot's special. For you, special price.

Ever vigilant, gotta get back to work.  Something just moved.
Can anyone imagine the Iraqis talking about the "good old days" under Saddam ?? Remember, when you could go to the market whithout being blown up. When Sunnis and Shias lived together in peace ? Remember when people had a future ? That was when American was trying to starve out Iraq. But still, hunger and all, at least they were secure and reasonabley safe. As long as you didn't get involved in politics. How many people get involved in politics in America ?? They were better off under Saddam !!

For some reason Bush, Cheney and the chicken hawk neo cons thought they could steal Iraq's oil. It would be easy (we'll be greeted as liberators). So much for arm chair warriors and their fantasies of a New American Century.

Start learning Chinese people, 'cuz this empire's going down the tubes real quick !!!
How degusting is it , the clintons team up to run for President. America had Eight years of filth and lying. America we need a President not more of the clintons crap!!!
Does anyone know the meaning of Moral content?? Does anyone want to return the White House back into a Whore House. We need a President of moral content and has leadership qualities, a back ground of leadership and not a track record of being a filthy over sexed pervert!  The White House is not for SALE! Return Honor and respect to our White House and the country. Finish these wars, Stop being the world cop, Cut off the useless Aid Bank, Bring back Pride and Honor.
Speaking of crack pipe usage, I must be several tokes WAY ofer the line.  I could swear I saw in Dave's (TN) post the line "IF the professional fear mongers get BACK in power..."???  What kind of fear mongers have been in power for the last 6 years?  Also, Crazy Dave-  I think we found a new way to surrender to terrorists without Pelosi or Reid's help back in November, 2004.
Right On!- Straight Up.  I for one would like to see many more of our constitutional guarantees disappear, and a hell of a lot more of our soldiers and innocent Iraqi women and children loose their lives than have to think about some sleaze-ball 'getting some'!  Yours is truly an intelligent post. (and hey, speaking of getting some- how 'bout that hottie Ann Coulter??  BOING!"
HAS WASHINGTON LOST THEIR MINDS !!!
THEY ARE BUILDING A MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR IRAQ EMBASSY IN A COUNTRY THAT DOES NOT WANT US THERE WHILE OUR WOUNDED RETURNING TROOPS ARE BEING MISTREATED IN OUR VA HOSPITALS WHICH CAN'T GET FUNDING FOR IMPROVEMENTS.
