Brownback hits Romney on agriculture

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro

As is becoming a pre-debate/forum/being-in-the-same-room-as-Romney ritual, Brownback is attacking Romney’s controversial stance on… agriculture? (They’re going to be in Iowa tomorrow -- there’s the hook -- for the Iowa Christian Alliance/Iowans for Tax Relief Forum).

“Romney suggested eliminating the Department of Agriculture and reducing farm subsidies during his unsuccessful 1994 Senate race in Massachusetts,” the first line of the memo states. By contrast, Brownback “grew up on a farm” and “has always made farmers and agriculture a priority,” says his Iowa communications director.

We’ll let you know when we hear of -- yet another -- response from the Romney campaign.

********UPDATE************The Romney campaign got back to us with a response. Here's what they wrote:

“Governor Romney believes that investing in agriculture is key to our economy and families. America’s farmers not only provide food for the dinner table, but they will play a critical role in lessening our reliance on foreign sources of oil.  Governor Romney is strongly committed to family farmers across this nation and is optimistic for the role the agriculture community will play in providing alternative and renewable sources of energy.”

All the republican candidates are a joke
Once again, there is potential for, as we say in Iowa, "The Manure Hitting the Fan."  But it probably won't happen, at least not with the Republicans. And not with their 'farm' supporters, who know that any cuts in Subsidies, won't affect the type of 'farm' they have.  One with a Law Firm.
YA he seems like a real farm boy...always giving someone the shaft..
just import all our food from china, don't let a few toxic chemicals scare ya
neither deserve any attention------
I just LOVE that the repubs are eating each other alive! Hilarious!
The Republican debate won't be "boring" like the last Democratic debate. That should make the media happy but I doubt we will hear anything of import or substance concerning the real problems in America. Any bets on whether someone talks about the shining city on the hill?
duh..
It's not just candidates...the grass roots are cannibalizing themselves too, btw the neocons and classic conservatives.
Hmm, yet another flipflop for Romney?
Hmm, yet another flipflop for Romney?
What pandering! Farm subsidies should have been eliminated years ago, along with any other such subsidies paid to other private businesses. Not only is it wrong, we just can't afford it any longer as a nation.
1000 people showed up in Iowa to see one man.  Ron Paul was not invited but proved that even if you give him a week,  the people will come.  Americans love freedom, and they love Ron Paul.  Ron Paul the next President of the United States!
The real story is about Ron Paul going there!
The real message was next door... RON PAUL!
What ? Another Romeny flip flop ? He was for women's rights and aginst farm subsidies, before. Now, he's against women's rights and for farm subsidies. Acutally, fram subsidies would be OK if they were for "family farms" and not corporate agriculture. Is that possible to give only to family farms ? What are family farms, nowadays? The other big problems are "monocropping" (but, who can convince farmers to rotate crops ?), an over reliance on petroleum based fertilizers and "frankenfoods" controlled by mega-corporations. There's plenty of agricultural issues to discuss, but don't expect the politicians (Repub or Demo) to discuss anything but bumper sticker slogans..... Ask them about immigrant farm workers and "amnesty" in Iowa......
In my opinion, Ron Paul is the ONLY candidate who advocates changing the direction that this country is going. We should be heading back to what made this country great, a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC...People have to wake up and realize that Americe is on a downhill slide and we need a real leader to set things straight.  Please check "RonPaul2008.org" and see if don't agree...
