Novak justifies outing Plame & sources

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro

At a breakfast meeting with reporters, Bob Novak defended his decision to print Valerie Plame Wilson’s name in his column -- which sparked the CIA leak investigation. And he justified his outing of several once-anonymous sources in his new book, The Prince of Darkness.

Novak contends in his book that Plame Wilson was “not now and never would be again” a covert agent. But he admits that CIA spokesman Bill Harlow asked him “to keep Mrs. Wilson’s CIA connection out of my column” and that the “revelation of her name might cause unspecified ‘difficulties’ if she traveled abroad.” He inferred based on his “experience with CIA jargon” that Plame “at one time had been engaged in covert activities abroad but was not now and never would be again.” He says he “learned much later” she had already been outed by a Soviet spy, “which had ended her career as a covert agent long before I wrote about her.”

He also says in his book that if given the chance, he’d print her name again. “I broke no law and endangered no intelligence operation,” Novak writes. This morning, he added he felt “disappointed in the journalism profession” for its reaction to his printing Plame Wilson’s name. “I thought we stuck together in things like this. I guess that wasn’t the case.”

One reporter questioned Novak on the ethics of unveiling sources -- who say they never want to be revealed -- even after their death. After at least one of Novak's sources died -- the infamous “Senator X” -- Novak said he felt justified in revealing who he was.

Novak quoted the following from “Senator X” in his Evans & Novak column: “‘The people don’t know McGovern is for amnesty, abortion and legalization of pot,' he told us. When 'middle America -- Catholic middle America, in particular’ -- once they find out, ‘he’s dead.’”

“A lot of people said I made it up,” Novak said. “I said I’d reveal it when the person dies.”

“Senator X” turns out to have been Tom Eagleton, who was at one point George McGovern’s vice presidential pick before resigning from the ticket after it was revealed that he was undergoing electro-shock treatment to treat depression. Novak labeled McGovern the Triple-A candidate -- supporting amnesty, abortion, and acid. Democratic strategist Bob Shrum, who worked McGovern’s campaign, said on Meet the Press this past Sunday that the label was one of things that sunk McGovern.

novack another right wing wacko not to be trusted, outs acovert CIA agent then lies about it.
Novack's opinion is not as valuable as Novack thinks.
Hopefully his book will never be a best seller. What a waste of talent.
Novak is a smal, ugly little man.  Who the hell would want to read any bizarre crap he writes.
A flim flam man and an egomaniac, stiffle yourself meat head. Imagine! He thinks he is a journalist!!
He needs more than electic shock!
What a tool Novak is. I've never had any respect for him anyway but this just confirms my disgust. Re his statement that Plame wasn't covert at the time: Not what the CIA says and they have the records to prove it. People think that outing her was a single task when in fact it resulted in shutting down a whole organization that, I believe, was targeted toward gaining info on Iran. Pity - we surely could use that info now.

Novak should be pilloried by the press for this.
I believe his book is a lie ----a waste of poor trees to print his B.S. book.He should stay on the fox ----he belongs with Hannity,Morris and Orielly---and Coulter. He is way too long in the tooth but just can't stay out of the limelight.I suppose it was good of him to volunteer that Rove has been a source for him all these years.Barf
The Left being concerned about the safety of a CIA agent is still the funniest part of this whole jacked up story. Maybe someday we'll hear the real story about how the some people in the CIA, DNC, State Department, and the MS90%LM tried to steal an election. How many journalist involved in this case once worked for the DNC, or are married to current DNC people? I forget. :-)
It seems pretty clear to me that Bob Novak did nothing wrong.  If he did the special prosecuter would have at least endited him.  This fully justifies Mr. Libby's pardon as there was no original crime to "lie" about.
Does his name have to be Clinton to have credibility with you guys? What makes him less credible than some that have written books on Bush? All books can be suspect. Every journalist can be questioned on motives. So what is the problem?
I enjoyed seeing Robert Novack on CNN's Capital Gang. He was a funny entertainer. But boy, what self-serving drivel. You can justify anything, nowadays. He outed a CIA agent.
Imagine if a liberal or Democrat had done something similar. The hue and cry there would have been. Apparently, under Bush, it's OK to out agents and its OK to commit perjury and it's OK to use the Jsutice Dept. for political ends. As long as you're a 'friend of George'
This has all been a huge waste of time. Might as well have been an inquisition about the color of cheese whiz. Joe Wilson is the ultimate left wingnut.
Novack not only outed the CIA agent, then he lied about cooperating with the Special Prosecutor when he was singing like a bird to garner sympathy from others in his field. A pathetic man.
He admits he was asked not to use Plame's name and if used might cause difficulties, but Mr. Novak knows better than CIA Spokesman Bill Harlow that Plame "was not now...a covert agent.  You keep telling yourself that, Mr. Novak, since all the records (pension, etc.) released in the court case indicate she was, indeed, covert at the time of your article. At least the book is aptly titled as he is definitely the prince of darkness.
IntheMiddle, Texas

The venting of Valeria Plame by Novak was as Keith Olberman said,"Karl Rove played Robert Novak like a two $2.00 guitar.

That was Roves way of covering up the missed and ignored information on Jul.10 & Aug. 6, 2001 about the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the "Financial Capital of the World." It is a shame 3,625 of our military were sent to their early graves due to power and lies.

Will over 27,000 wounded ever have a normal life just because someones wanted a position in the Middle East.

After Sept. 25th Gen. Peter Pace said more troops would be needed. For What?? just to guard a Secret Embassy in the Middle of Baghdad that our government hid from all American for 4 years?

They didn't hide it from Charles J. Henley of the Associated Press about the longer stay of our troops and the Colossal Embassy in Iraq in Mar. & May 2006

As they say in Texas "If you can't convince them with facts, then Buffalo them with BULLSHIT"
The only reason for any of this way the Left wing's desire to stage an impeachment, really just an immature need for revenge to the Clinton "depends on what the meaning of 'is' is" stone faced lie on national tv fiasco. I sincerely hate how some Americans put their political party before the interests of this world leading country.  Lemmings.
ALL YOU DITTO HEADS JUST DONOT GET IT.TRY TO DISCREDIT YOUR SUPPOSED ENEMIES BY OUTING THE MANS FAMILY REAL HE MAN STUFF,BUT OF COURSE ANY MISS DEEDS BY THEIR MEN IS OVERLOOKED.LOOK IN THE MIRROW WHAT A DISUSTNG IDEA.

More proof that he is typical the lying bunch of right wing hypocritical retards that are doing their best to screw up this country.
The White House is getting away with bloody murder of americans in Iraq why wouldn't a judge let them get away with outing a CIA agent?
Robert Noavak is a political hack and has no credibility as a journalist.  Jack Anderson he ain't.  He'd tell on his mother and justify doing it if he thought it would get him one more reader.
Undercover Plame? You bet your bippee she is...along with her pimping husband.  What an obscene pair of skudzball wackos!  They should be spayed and neutered again, but this time successfully.  The only crime in this whole sordid affair is that they were not euthanized before consuming food and space better intended for normal people.
The radical wing of the Republican Party that takes no issue with this is transforming true Conservatism to a scary form of Fascism.  Anything critical of their administration is anti-Americanism; anything their administration does is acceptable, and if anyone disagrees, they are an enemy of the administration.  This radical right is an anti-American, anti-freedom voice that is an embarrassment to the ideologies of liberty and those who have died to preserve it.
Isn't it funny how we went from the era of "loose lips, sink ships" to betrayal of a government agent is fair game to protect presidential propaganda?
All the political back-and-forth aside, identifying for the world a CIA operative of this country is, in my opinion, treason.  All he did was take an asset of our intelligence gathering agency and make that asset useless.  Novak is complicit in retribution for disagreeing with the current administration.  The real question is:  How close to the top did this start???
patrick,
so you think it was correct for Clinton to get impeached for lying about a blow-job; yet, it is still OK to for bush to send over 3,600 Americans to their death for a war based on poor information and cherry-picked intelligence? Remember, the main, original reason for the war, WMD, have not turned up.  It has been proven 9-11 originated with Saudis, not Iraqis, and al Queda has a presence in Iraq only AFTER our invasion. These may not be impeachable, however, it does seem the results of bush's admin have been far worse than Clinton's BJ.
Sounds like a serious case of guilt ridden, excessive exageration from an angry manipulated and manipulative man trying hard to over justify and compensate for his illegal actions. If the CIA says Plame was covert, which they have time and time again, then she's covert, no matter what Cheney, Rove, Libby and Novak try to sell!
I just have a couple of short things to say, for which I'm sure you all will be grateful.

First, how hard is it to spell N-o-v-a-k? Especially when appears that way in the article.

Second, do some people's brains have an automatic filter that won't allow the name "Richard Armitage" to enter their consciousness?

Finally, Sierra, there is a reason a well known lovable little fuzzball radio talk-show host refers to Democrat Senator Patrick Leahy as Senator "Leaky".  Democrats leak, too.  In case you haven't noticed, Washington D.C in general is one big drip.
Novak is guilty of treason and ought to be treated accordingly.
Conservatives are so silly. Did Fitzgerald lie when he released his discovery information during the sentencing portion of Libby's trial that showed Plame had travelled on missions within 5 years before her outing. Did the CIA lie when they entered into the congressional record Plame's status of being covert, a NOC, and classified. The Aldridge Aimes claim was looked into by Fitz, and he determined it wasn't true.

And here's another question, who told Novakula about Brewster-Jennings, a CIA front company, which he wrote about in a second article. That would have destroyed the cover of other CIA operatives, and their cultivated sources. I'm quite sure most of Plame's sources were executed, as spying yields the ultimate penalty in all countries, including America.

I would love the see the damage assessment report. I also vaguely remember, around the time Plame was outted, seeing a report on TV, by CNN, about some americans found dead in Pakistan but I don't remember any additional reporting and have not been able to find any information thru Google. The reason I mention it is because Pakistan is not a tourist destination, so if some americans died their they would have to be charity workers, government official, or businessmen. We know that Plame and others work in the Iraq, Iran, and Pakistan regions. Either way, it should have been a major story.

"Novak is a smal, ugly little man."

I think someones smitten.

He's a few steps up for you H P.

Aren't there any drop dead (literally) drunks around where you prowl?
The latest breaking news is that a federal judge has given Plames lawsuit against the administration the boot.Mebbe Wilson can get a job shilling classic rock on VH1.
I agree with PJ Fuller.  The militias have finally taken over the Repug party.  We have to stop this now.  Vote Dem, Ind, or anybody but do not vote for Repugs.
in the middle from texas, enough already with clinton.  you sound like a little kid who keeps saying "if he did i can do it too".  it is 2007 and we are in the middle of a mess.  $2 trillion by the time this is done and 4,000 soldiers killed.  that has nothing to do with clinton.  it has to do with bush and cheney.  period.  we were all sold a war like it was soda.  novak acted like a marketer from a competing soda company.  many bought into it temporarily.  now that we know, we can realize that the biggest "anti-american" thing that was done was that we did not question it.
NOVAK IS IN MY OPINION A MORE HONEST JOURNALIST THAN MOLST OF THE OTHERS. COMPARED TO DEATHBED WOODWARD HE IS A GIANT. WOODWARD MADE UP HIS DEATHBED INTERVIEW. NOVAK TELLS IT LIKE IT IS .... IT IS ONLY ULTRA LIBERAL SOCIALOIDS THAT DO NOT LIKE HIM.
What happens in the Republican Party happens equally in the Democratic party. Such is Politics.  If you don't know that by now, you never will.  It is a fact that Valery Plame was "outed" a long time before Armitage was to have supposedly "outed" her.   There was no leak, therefore no crime.  Joe Wilson just hates republicans and that is why he is on his bandwagon.  Libby fell for an old political tool.    He was "Daniel Webstered and the Devil" into telling a fabrication.  Then they prosecuted him for it.  He should have taken the fifth and he would have been alright.
may be he is right
PJ Fuller, I couldn't agree more.  In spite of all the other stuff going on Authoritarian Conservatism is the greatest threat to our nation.  All the other stuff comes out of authoritarianism and an attitude that the end justifies the means.
I am totally disgusted with the way Valerie Plame has been treated in this whole incident.  I am of the belief that CIA agents especially "undercover" should be treated just as we would treat any soldier of the military.  Not ONLY is her life long wishes and goals of furthering her CIA career now DESTROYED she has been "grilled" during the trial as if SHE were the one that was on trial rather than being the one wronged!  I hope she sues the government for wrongful treatment along with a list of grievances a mile long.  What is our loyal country coming to?

Jill Nordin
one other thing.  it is not bob novaks job to determine who is or who is not under cover.  nor is it cheney's.
Mark, you can't blame Bush for the intel, perhaps the national archives can be used to figure that part out.  Oh wait, someone walked out of the national archives with classified materials hidden in his pants.  I'm pretty sure that wasn't someone from this administration, and therefore, no one cared and no front page stories.  Lying under oath in the Senate is a big deal, if it is proven that Bush purposely lied, then he should be impeached.  Ps. Plame shouldn't of sent her husband to Niger in the first place.
Plame was fair game as soon as she used her position in the CIA for purely political purposes.  She sent her doggie over to Africa with the results pre-determined by her democrat party handler.  Her and her pet diplomat should be shot for treason.

Support the Troops - up-armour hummers with the thick skulls of liberals.
Robert Novak outed a covert CIA in his column with the aid of the Ass't Secretary of State Richard Armitage. Why are not these treasonous bastards in jail? If this happened during a Democratic  administration or even during the Clinton admistration, the screaming jackals from Hell that is the Republican party and their talk radio schills would be in a froth over this. Their hipocracy knows no end. it is time to run them out of office and town with electric cattle prods.
Krauthammer defined BDS as "the acute onset of paranoia in otherwise normal people in reaction to the policies, the presidency—nay—the very existence of George W. Bush".[2] The term reflects a belief that some criticisms of President Bush—for example, a description of President Bush as the greatest current threat to American lives—are of emotional origins rather than based on facts or logic.

{{{I am totally disgusted with the way Valerie Plame has been treated in this whole incident.  }}}

Yeah, you'd think someone would get her a photo shoot in some kind of magazine or something.  You know, start her on a new career path.  We then could all buy the magazine to show our support.  But we'd just read the articles, and not look at the pictures or nothing.
And what of Plame's  prior contacts, affiliations, travel movement which could be re-analized by unfriendly targets. Doesn't Novak and those who were party to outing Plame have any concept of the consequences of their acts. Novak's statement that he would do it again is irresponsible.
So, much of the anger is based on the CIA confirming that Plame was a covert operative at the time. When did all of you libs start trusting the CIA????
I gguess you havn't seen the latest NEWS, the CIA is all about screwing us with their own BULL S__T.
There's more than plenty of blame to go around here vis-a-vis Plamegate.  Novak has taken the supposedly high road and pretends he did nothing wrong.  If Novak had never written anything about Valerie Plame, it wouldn't have hurt him, but he just couldn't keep his big mouth shut.  This was all about Novak increasing his readership by tattling secrets and pretending he is blameless.
Joe Wilson is not spotless, either.  He's lathered up at the mouth about this and has been for years and apparently thinks EVERYONE is missing the big picture, which is this:
When Joe goes to bed at night, he's sleeping with Valerie Plame, one of the hottest women in the Beltway.  Please, Joe, spare me those crocodile tears, 'cause I ain't buying it.
Journalism=lying in black and white.
repulicans do not know history---cant read??--they should study what & how Hitler and the nazi party took oveer germany during the early 1930's--same thing has been happening in us for last 7 years--or maybe they can read and are copying----one party rule ??
Why hasn't Ms. Plame been nominated for the Medal Of Honor. To think she was a covert agent heading up a team obtaining the most secret of details concerning Iran. She surely will be considered for a high level security position in Hillary's administration.
All you idiot ditto heads who are calling Joe Wilson a left wing nut, and a Democrat need to get your facts straight. He is a long-time government employee and public servant who has served under both Democrats and Republicans. His only political appointment was by George Bush Sr. as ambassador to Iraq, and he voted for George Bush Sr. After the way he's been treated by George W. Bush's administration I wouldn't blame him for being against them. It's shameful and treasonous to expose & undermine the work of an undercover CIA agent working to fight terrorism, specifically in the field of WMD's. After all this talk about supporting the troops! Valerie Plame is one of those troops.
SHAME!
Impeach the whole lot of the Bush administration!
