The Bush White House

The Washington Post writes that the Bush Administration yesterday “unveiled a bold new assertion of executive authority” in the US attorneys firings, saying “that the Justice Department will never be allowed to pursue contempt charges initiated by Congress against White House officials once the president has invoked executive privilege. The position presents serious legal and political obstacles for congressional Democrats, who have begun laying the groundwork for contempt proceedings against current and former White House officials in order to pry loose information about the dismissals.”

The AP reports that Valerie Plame Wilson yesterday lost a civil lawsuit “that demanded money from Bush administration officials whom she blamed for leaking her agency identity… U.S. District Judge John D. Bates dismissed the case on jurisdictional grounds and said he would not express an opinion on the constitutional arguments. Bates dismissed the case against all defendants: Cheney, White House political adviser Karl Rove, former White House aide I. Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby and former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage.”

The New York Times: “President Bush came to Tennessee on Thursday to attack Congressional Democrats for their budget proposals, auguring what both sides agreed would be a contentious fight over taxes and spending.” The paper also has this: Those perplexed by his first stop here at the Nashville Bun Company got a clear explanation at the president’s next stop, the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. ‘I would warn the Nashville Bun Company,’ Mr. Bush told a mostly adoring crowd of local business leaders, ‘you can’t keep making buns if the Democrats take all your dough.’” Har-har-har.

The Los Angeles Times notes Bush's new effort this week to fly around the country and talk domestic policy. "Such visits draw little national attention, but the out-of-town stops gain extensive local coverage sought by the White House to counter the steady beat of the Iraq war on news pages, websites, television and radio. And they provide a backdrop of a White House seeking, city by city, to portray the president as focused on the breadth of his job and not just the war."

Speaking of the traveling president, he's headed to Charleston, SC next Tuesday -- the day after the eight Democratic wannabes debate in the city.

IMPEACH BUSH/CHENEY NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When President Bush gets out of the beltway, more and more people see he doesn't strut around like the Nazi you libs make him out to be.  With the media feeding the liberal push to have him impeached, he shows his warm and funny side to the real American folks, the kind you don't see or read about in the newspapers.  I see the latest polls, him and congress have gained 3 points.  Now, only 64% of Americans think Bush is doing a bad job and 83% think congress is doing a bad job.  After the slumber party in the Senate, now congress can go on their 5 week slumber vacation.

"Bush Administration yesterday “unveiled a bold new assertion of executive authority” - when is the Congress going to take action and tell this administration we have a Constitution that gave us 3 branches (sorry Mr. Cheney) to provide checks and balances.  I never thought I'd be living under a dictator in the U.S.  Enough!
Sixteen (long) months and counting.
The White House is getting away with bloody murder of american soliders in Iraq, of course they're going to get away with all of their corrupt doings at home. No surprise there. The sooner we get rid of every clueless and corrput conservative in Washington the better this nation will be .... let him be warm and funny in Crawford with his tumbleweeds. I'm sure that the Democrats running for office in TN got a boost in their donations after Bush's visit there.
jerry, don't forget the Repuks are in the vacation mode as well, while soldiers and innocent people lose their lives!!!!!!!!!!!
He may not be a 'Nazi', Jerry, but he sure comes off as a complete bumbling idiot who is about as disconnected from reality as anyone could be. His lame attempt at being 'funny' confirms it. He should switch off the El Rushbo show and try some Comedy Central for a change.
Our Constitution and Bill of Rights have been attacked and decimated by this administration.  We now live in more of a dictatorship than a republic.  In 70 years I have not seen a more devastating attack on our own country by an administration.  I fear this administration more than I fear the terrorists!!
what proof do you offer Utahreb?
Bush and his ever-expanding over-reaching of power.  "His" justice department will "never be aloowed" to pursue contempt citations against "his" flunkies.  What we have here is not a Nazi, but surely a chimp who would like to be an American Mussolini.  No one in Bush's circle gets caught because the cops are also part of the criminals. It's a neat system.  Did Huey Long do as well?

Watch some programs about hitler and you see bush in the exact same mode.  hitler and his nazis changed one rule at a time til they had taken all rights and freedoms from germans, exactly what bush/cheney and the repubs are doing.  They wont quit, so they have to be defeated at the polls, be sure you are registered to vote and contact all elected officials and let them know thier jobs are on the line and tell them WE WANT OUR COUNTRY AND CONSTITUTION BACK
Ricardo in California, Your a moron!! conservatives are not represented by Republicans in Washington. Why do you think we voted all those Republicans out of office? We voted them out because they are like the Democrats in Washington, they are both corrupt and do not represent the people anymore.
The groundwork for "give the surge more time", and not hold the Bush regime's feet to the fire has begun.  It is increasingly apparent, that in order to remove our men and women from the 1300-year old Iraq Civil War, is to first remove the President and his Vice President.  We cannot allow Al Queda to grow and gather further support, and have the overwhelming bulk of our military bogged down in the hopeless debacle in Iraq.  President Bush's war has not only made us less safe, but has emerged as a recruiting tool, that Iran nor Bin Laden could have ever hoped to duplicate.  I have come to believe that the President and his inner circle are close to sociopathic in their utter disregard for the carnage being visited upon our men and women in Iraq.  I will now join forces with those who are working diligently behind the scenes to bring Articles of Impeachment against Dick Cheney and then George W. Bush, this regime refuses to do other than stay the course, so we as patriotic Americans, should ensure that we no longer stay the course with this Administration.
Utahreb, Veyo, UT,  - I fear people who think like you do since you don't have a clue about what a dictatorship is. I can't stand this administration or any of the politicians in Washington and believe they should be rounded up and executed for treason.
I read about "real American folks" in the newspaper every day.  Some are good, some are bad, some are weak, some are strong, etc.  Are you saying that people you don't like, don't agree with, or don't look like you aren't real?  Are you saying people can only be "American" if they think like you?  Is bush "warn and funny" like you?
"We have met the enemy and he is us." from a Pogo comic strip from the 60's.
So, the Bush handlers decided to get him out and about the country before his annual three week vacation in August.  Big hairy deal.  His crowds are all cherry-picked and vetted before he even steps up on stage.  No pickets/protesters are allowed with a half-mile of his parade route to and from whereever he might be staying, the airport, and the auditorium.   He's still not speaking to the people.  He's speaking to the choir - of which Jerry seems to be the lead soloist.
jerry, here's one for you "I will fire anyone responsible for outing a CIA operative" the dunce in chief.  The other day he stated that "someone in his administration did leak this information and that it is old news and we need to move on"  Did you know that leaking a CIA operative (undercover at that) is  considered a treasoness act?  That's just the beginning of proof.
Steve P, It was the conservatives(GOP) in Washington who voted a few days ago NOT to bring our troops home and keep the course in Iraq. In November of '06, the election was about Iraq. Nothing more, Nothing Less. The American People WANT an end to this "made up" war. The Dems have been attempting to stop this war and stop the killing of more americans in Iraq. However, the spineless conservative GOP would rather turn their backs on what this nation wants then stand up to Bush. Like I said, the conservative GOP in Washington has to go.
Impeach the scum in the out house. Time to flush that stinking crap down the toilet.  They all belong in a cesspool.
Impeach, cut the funding for everything and add a dose of SANIFLUSH!
Mikeeeg: Are you sure he'll even stop when we vote him out?  Maybe he's so in love with the power, he'll refuse to leave in January '09.  Maybe his God will tell him it's not yet time to go.  And who'd be able to stop him?  He's got a "unitary big gummint" now.  Congress is immasculated, he's fired all the genrals who'd stand up to him, and he's stack the Supreme Coourt and the DoJ in his favor.  He could literally decide to be Emperor For Life.  A scary thought, but think it, anyway...
No shut down for August, house and senate stay the course.  Keep the government open. Damage will be done again if the scum in the outhouse is left with the fan on.
Be careful of what you say! bush is more devious and powerful than you know. He represents powerful business, not the people. As a matter of fact his whole format for governing is focused on usurping the will of the people for his own agenda. History tells us that his next probable move is to do the unexpected such as creating a situation that will allow him to take absolute power and assume the role of "Absolute Leader" (Patriot Act). Is the Reichstag burning yet? Sound familiar.
Enough is enough.  While the Justice Department is part of the Administration, it has become far too political.  I'm not saying this is Bush's fault, because I honestly have not investigated this.  However, whomever is responsible for it needs to just stop.  If the law is supposed to be color blind, it should certainly be party blind as well, and there is something inherently wrong in a system that permits those in power to not only violate the law but to also forbid those in charge of prosecuting such violations to prosecute them.  It's ridiculous.
Every day we read about king george changing laws he doesn’t like or understand.

Regardless what he does or what laws he ignores he still has fools like Jerry/corpus christi texas writing his stupid small hail to the king ramblings everyday.

We have to remember that their unfortunately their a lot of jerrys out their that still believe the great dividers spin on the truth.

40% of the republicans are convinced that we were attacked by Iraq because they believe what ever king george and his nest of thieves tell the American public.

Today there are reports that the generals in Iraq need until November to access the way georges oil war is going.

But if the generals say that things are not going well we can replace the generals again.

That has been true in the past it will surely be true again.

Anyway the good news is that king gorge still has a lot of fools like jerry/corpus christi texas waving his flag.

jerry you are a fool to believe the hail to the king bull.
IMPEACH BUSH, IMPEACH CHENEY - run the scum out of town and out of our lives!!!
I fully expect something to happen before Bush gets out of office.  With his new executive order of May 9, giving him absolute control over all branches of government in the event there is some calamity (it was very vague in the order what would constitute such a calamity), and Chertoff's "gut" feeling that something is going to happen this summer, (also, the order stated that Homeland Security;i.e. Chertoff would run the country{God help us}) I would not be a bit surprised.  Don't forget those detention camps that it was reported last year that have been built around the country for "rapidly expanding programs.". I'm not paranoid at all, but in my 53 years, this is the first administration I have ever been fearful of.  Like someone else said, I am more afraid of this administration than I am terrorism.
RC in Denver, I agree with you and the other posters like Pacheck and Jim, Washington D.C.  I have been having thoughts along the same lines.  I'm glad I'm not alone.  What scares me is how easy it's been for Bush to ignore laws, change laws to suit himself and just do as he pleases. What in blazes is Congress doing in D.C.? Never mind, I forgot that the Democrats are a thin majority with the Republicans still bowing to King George's will.  Suppose he decides he wants to stay in power as Jim, D.C. suggests?  Our total military force, that's active duty, guard and reserves, are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.  So, who would stop him if he seized permanent control?  The citizens of this country? With about 26% who think Bush can do no wrong and a number of citizens who are scared little sheep that will do as they are told, we have a snowball's chance in hell of restoring the Constitution. Lord, I never thought I would even believe there was that possibility!
jerry/corpus christi texas

Why is it that everytime someone makes a comment that your tiny mind can't understand you ask for proof.

if you can't understand simple statements than what makes any of us believe you can understand proof.

As a matter of fact this lack of ability to understand goes for all of Jerry's butt crack licking neocon friends and alter personalities
Ricardo - It's my opinion that Democratic voters and many Independents made the '06 election about Iraq. However, myself and most of my friends, who are registered Republicans, stayed home in November, not because of Iraq. We stayed home because the Republicans in Congress were spending our money like drunken Democrats, and we were very unhappy with Medicare Part D, parts of No Child Left Behind, and with the lack of progress around securing our borders. I've heard over and over again that "'06 was about Iraq!" and it probably was to some people however a lot of dedicated conservatives I know didn't vote to protest the domestic policies and continue to support the President in the War on Terror.

RC in Denver - Where did you get your 40% number for Republicans who think Iraq attacked us?
Am I missing something?  What is this executive order?

And by the way, GAB...the President cannot just say "Homeland Security will be in charge of running the country" and poof! they are.  I'm not sure there are even procedures in place for permitting one segment of one branch of the government to take control of the country...but if there are, I would bet those procedures would require more than an executive order for implementation.
Bush is turning out to be quite the Autocrat..what's next the extension of presidential term limits?
Ryan,MI,
I saw a similar poll in USA Today either early this week or last week...didn;t take too much note, but I do remember thinking if you repeat a lie often enough...
There are many reasons for true conservatives, apparently like Ryan-MI, to be upset as stated in your post.  I agree with your points, and you can add his signing statements that say he will "cheery pick" when he wants to uphold certain laws, the loss of habeus corpus, admitting his admin outed a CIA agent, just to name a few.
Well, our worst nightmare is about to happen!!!!Chaney is taking over the country while Bush gets a colonoscopy.  I'm wondering if we'll get reamed at the same time it's happening to the President.
ya I have had a colonscopy and was wide awake the whole time.  this is where cheney takes over, bush has done all he can do and now cheney takes over, get ready folks cause here it comes.
Does the doctor performing the colonoscopy have to take some sort of a litmus test?
The problem with a colonoscopy for W, is that this is an operation verrrrrry close to his brain!
Now I lay me down to sleep

I pray to George W. Bush my soul to keep

If I should die before I wake

I paray George W. Bush my soul to take

If I should live for other days

I pray George W. Fush to light my way

Amen
Rescue from Congress. That is a real joke. I am sure that not all congressmen are sexually perverted, morally bankrupt or being blackmailed because of their past indescretions, but as sure as the sun will raise in the morning, they are all for sale. The things they are mandated to do are focused on doing what is right for the people of the U.S. and not personal interest groups. And most of these issues are pretty easy and logical to answer, yet you look at the conclusions these legislators come up with and it boggles the mind. The inmates have taken over the nut house. I fear it is to late for a normal environment to return. We got the government we deserve.
Who's really in-charge of the US? Is it really the Office of the President?

Cheney being President is nothing new. He's always wanted the power without the pain of getting there. He's had it since they took office in Jan. of 2001. Bush continues to be a barely-coherent man who relishes his position.

I certainly hope these 2 will relinquish their offices in Jan. of 2009!!
Wow Jerry from Corpus Christi, Bush says jump and you say how high.  Use some of the brain power God gave you.  Just to remind you, we were attacked on 9-11-01 by 19 hijackers, 15 of them Saudi Arabians, not one from Iraq.  And your dimwit fearless leader, instead of attacking the people that attacked us, goes and attacks a country that had about as much to do with 911 as Sweden did, nothing.  I'm not saying Saddam was a saint, but he wasn't Bin Ladin.  Bush allowed Bin Ladin to escape, turned the mideast into a more chaotic place by invading a stable Iraq and strengthened Iran by taking away one of the best deterrents we had against Iran, namely Saddam Hussein.  I expect to see a greater Shiite theocracy run by the Iranians throughout the whole region.  Thanks George.  This is by far the worst military and political blunder in the last one hundred years and our kids will be paying for your Texas hero's failure.  And just so you don't think I'm some anti-war liberal, because I hear you use that word very liberally, let me tell you what my response would have been to 911.  First thing I would have seized the Saudi oil fields as payback and to stop the true terror financing that the Saudis supply.  Secondly, I would have sent a Delta force into Pakistan to neutralize the nuclear weapons that we know that they have.  And let me just tell you Jerry, my man from Texas, Pakistan is a far more militant country that Iraq ever was and is on the verge of explosion.  But you keep praising your little Texas shrub, one of these days you may see the light and realize what an absolute failure this administration was and is.  A true disgrace on America's glorious reputation
Ryan , Michigan is stating exactly why Republicans did not vote in '06. William Kristol called the few Republicans speaking out about the war now, "sissies"-Fox News last week. In an editorial he is focused on winning  the Presidency in'08 and making sure a Republican has the next pick of a Supreme Court Justice nomination.
Greg R, Spokane, WA

".......I pray George W. Bush to light my way"

You must like being kept in the dark!!!!!
Ryan in Michigan The information about the misinformed republicans was on CNN and MSNBC.

You probably missed I doubt it was on republican sponsored fox news.

Maybe you should give CNN and MSNBC a look.

You might actually learn something.

On second thought Ryan don’t waste your time changing the channel  looks like your mind has already been made up.

Stay with Fox News and we all will be better off
Yeah Bush is so warm and funny---is it warm and funny to send our young people to be murdered in Iraq, for a lie?Are all Bush supporters so ignorant and callous,or just unaware?Yes I can see Bush turning our military on us to keep his powers that he has eagerly confiscated from we the people.
>> Chaney is taking over the country

Whose Chaney?
RC - Actually most of the time I watch MSNBC. I like Hardball and Tucker. Not much of a fan of Olberman, should've stuck with sports, or Scarborough. I was only asking because I thought it seemed pretty high and also it was a nice round number so I didn't know if you had just guessed or if you actually had documentation to back it up. I've looked around the USA Today site, as Mark suggested, but haven't found anything yet. I'm not saying its not there, I'm just interested in seeing it for myself.
Bob White, if you're going to correct me, correct me correctly.  Cheney (not) Chaney, I accept. It should be who's or who is Cheney.  Whose, Cheney? Well, he ain't mine, that's for sure.
