Brownback fired away from the second tier …again at Romney -- this time questioning his support of the Boy Scouts. And he is even swinging away at Tancredo.

The Brownback camp, which has sent out almost weekly e-mails criticizing Romney’s positions on various issues, hits this time with the headline, “Romney Hostile to Boy Scout Leadership and Principles: Supports gay scout leaders, was cold to Scout participation in Olympics.”

They cite that Romney said in his 1994 Senate run against Ted Kennedy, “I feel that all people should be allowed to participate in the Boy Scouts regardless of their sexual orientation."

They also dig up a quote from Boy Scout official Marty Latimer, who claimed Romney shut them out of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. “We don't understand what's wrong,” Latimer said. “They just don't want us and won't talk to us.”

The Romney campaign said in response: “Governor Romney has been the most prominent, leading advocate of the family values platform in this campaign. His consistent advocacy on these issues has resulted in an important growth of support for our campaign. Some other campaigns will resort to negative attacks and distortions, which is an unfortunate reflection on their campaign’s conduct.

“Governor Romney has been a supporter of the Boy Scouts and has said he supports their right to decide scouting policies.”

The Romney campaign also e-mailed us a two-page “Fact Sheet” trying to set the record straight -- so to speak. It includes a 1994 Boston Globe clip in which Romney said, “I support the right of the Boy Scouts of America to decide what it wants to do on that issue.'" There’s another from the New York Times in which organizers of the Salt Lake City games recruited about 200 area Boy Scouts as volunteers and that Romney was a Boy Scouts national board member. Evangelicals for Mitt tried to dismiss these allegations in late 2006.

The attacks aren’t limited to Romney. They have also been making calls attacking Tancredo for supposedly taking money from a contributor to Planned Parenthood. Here’s a transcript of the phone calls from the AP: "Say no to Tom Tancredo and his Planned Parenthood friend and help end abortion in America.”

Tancredo told the AP, “Brownback is a longtime friend who ‘is well aware of my lifelong commitment to the unborn … I call on Senator Brownback to cease with the maliciously misleading push calls intended to harm me and apologize."

Well, this is no way to make friends. And I think we can scratch Brownback off Romney’s vice presidential choices list.

Brownback is pulling out 04 playbook with more gay bashing....how pathetic and desperate can he be. He will be toast by the fall.
kind of makes me wonder what kind of "relationship" romney has with that $1200 a week make-up artist
Republicans eating their own.  mmmm, tastes like chicken-hawk.
I think Brownback was off Romney's VP list a long time ago, he's been at his throat from day one.

But where's the big story of the day?  Mitt Romney has just had his own macaca moment, caught in a photograph grinning and holding a sign that says No Obama Osama.  This is quickly becoming a big story, building up gradually much like the George Allen video picked up steam - why no mention of it here?  The different explanations by the Romney campaign are as bad as the ones the Allen campaign gave, and this is actually even more offensive than macaca, in the sense that not only is a minority being mocked on camera due to their heritage, but they're simultaneously being compared to a terrorist responsible for the greatest mass murder in American history.

That dummy Romney. He should know that democrats "own" minorities, and are the only ones allowed to mock them. Wonder how much that Hillary girl made for showing up with that sign.
I see a movie in the making -- Brownback Mountain
Brownback just trying to stay in the news.
Desparate measures for a desparate man.
Juan... they are starting to bang their heads on the wall.  DESPERADOS!
I love seeing the repuks(POTS) trying to call the other kettle black.  lol
Brownback is on the decline and hates Romney because he's a mormon.  It's obvious what he's doing,  Mixing religion with politics and trying to cover it up.  I guess he'd rather have the party nominate Freddy boy Thompson and get smashed in the election.  The republicans don't stand a chance unless they realize what's going on.  If Brownback doesn't want a gay supporter in office he should go after Hillary or Obama.
Actually, the Democratic field needs a Brownback to call out candidates (inits. HRC) about their past stands (Iraq, timetables, flag burning). Where are you, Mike, Dennis, Joe, Chris ??
Brownback is holding the flip-floppers and Planned Parenthood lovers accountable, good for him. It seems to be working, according to the des moines register.
I haven't seen anyone this obsessively anti-gay since Ted Haggard and Mark Foley.
Three of Romney's sons are Eagle Scouts. I'm pretty sure Romney is too. Doesn't really sound like a guy who is too hostile towards the Boy Scouts.
Has anyone read the book of Mormon? Romney is not a closet liberal. As a Mormon he would be far right of far right.
You gotta' be "F-ING" kidding me!
We have a war, based on lies, going on in Iraq, an Attorney General who wants to use the justice department as a means of waging personal vendettas against Democratic politicians, a 20 year CIA agent, who was outed by a bunch of ass-clowns at The White House (one of whom got caught lying about it), had her lawsuit dismissed, and The State Department sent Hillary a letter blaming her for Bush's failures in Iraq.....AND THESE GUYS ARE BARKING ABOUT GAYS IN THE BOY SCOUTS?
If the Democrats win the White House next year (as I suspect they will), don't go crazy analyzing why they won. Just break out THIS story and re-read it and you'll have a total understanding of the situation.
TEC-SPRING is that why Harry Reid is so far right? Or does Reid suck as much at being a Mormon, as he does at being Senate Majority Leader?
Jim: I have. They are known as Muslims.
I am sure Mr. Romney does not need to explain, but as Jon states above, Boy Scouts are a major, major part of the Mormon church in the U.S.  As an important volunteer leader with Boy Scouts in my area, I am upset that anyone would drag our youth into this debate.  Apologize Mr. Brownback.
Davein TN. Reid is a converted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and his wife is a Mormon convert from Judaism. I would not say he is a dyed in the wool Mormon, He only has 5 children and if he was a good Mormon he would have at least 7 or 8 children. In Utah you do not get very far in Politics as a non-church member.  I have met good Mormons and odd Mormons and was recruited to join the Church. I have read the book and would say that they are not mainstream Christians.
The reason polygamy was outlawed in Utah was that it was required as a condition of statehood. The Church has been at war with the federal government and members have killed non-Mormons when they attempted to settle in Utah.
Romney is hostile towards whomever threatens his ability to get elected.  In MA, that very well could have been the Boy Scouts.  I don't know whether this is true or not, but to me it is just another in a long line of potential inconsistencies with Romney's positions.

I also don't see Brownback's comments as dragging the youth of this country into a political debate any more than a discussion of sex education in kindergarten does.  Back when there was litigation on the issue of homosexuality in the Boy Scouts, I recall politicians being asked their opinion on it all the time.  Simply because an issue touches on children doesn't mean they are being dragged into a political debate.  And even if it does, so what?  Desegregation was a huge political issue 40 years ago; should politicians not have discussed it because it would be dragging kids into it?
Hi,
Why do we care about Romney or Brownback and these silly little sound bites - wouldnt you rather here our candidates talking about the issues?

everyone on this board should go check out Ron Paul's stance on the issues - you will not find him making any attacks on the other candidates because he doesn't need to.

I am not a libertarian but someone else said (and i agree) that Ron Paul is the only politician that could tell me the sky was blue and i wouldn't feel compelled to go outside and make sure:

find out for yourseld PLEASE -

www.ronpaul2008.com

go check it out, listen to some of his youtube clips and then tell me your thoughts - i was surprised by his ability to explain what is really going on and not making me feel like an idiot... interesting man
Considering I have a son who is an eagle scott, I find this whole thing troubling.  Brownback calling out the scouts, Obama talking about sex education for four year olds, Hillary trying to get us all killed.. what the hell is the matter with this country?
OMG, Jerry has an Eagle Scout son & so do I!!!

We are in the midst of a very complex Boy Scout lease of city property issue in San Diego (currently at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals).  One of the successful common ground areas was to leave the boys out of the litigation and let them continue with current programs.  In other words, don't let the boys suffer over adult issues.
Brownback is right.  I live in Massachusetts and know first-hand Romney's shifting stances.  Brownback on the other hand is like a rock in shifting sand; he has been a consistant republiican his whole life.  May Brownback win the republican nomination!
too many years of wealthy elite repubs sucking the life out of the average working person is whats wrong with the country
Steve - Is anyone here advocating not leaving the boys out of it?  Is anyone here saying they should suffer over adult issues?  I don't think so.  This story is about one politician uncovering another politician's potential shift in thinking on an issue of pretty high importance to their party's base.  Again, I don't see anyone dragging boys, kicking and screaming, into a fire.
The main thing I see about all the Repulicans candidates is that they not talking about major issues. Just bickering.  they are driving away the voters. The GOP has raised less money the the Dems. The people are fed up with the status quo. Many Republican are facing tough relections.
The working class is waking up,and saying enough is enough.
Who is this Brownback? How come he is never in the MSM?

Is he a rabid anti-choice person? Has he ever walked in
the overcrowded streets of Asian cities?

Sounds like he wants to impose his religious beliefs on the rest of us who don't believe in his religion!
TEC-Spring-TX, I am sick of reading blogs written by idiots who can't get their facts straight.  If you are going to attack a religion, at least do it with facts.  Let's go down the list of your inaccuracies: 1) Harry Reid doesn't live in Utah (so your statement he has to be a Mormon to be a politician is false) 2) "To be a good Mormon you have to have 7 or 8 children" -- false, most of the high ranking leaders in the Church have less than five children, 3) "members have killed non-members when they tried to settle", really?  When, who?  Why is 30% of the state not LDS?  I assume you are referencing the Mountain Meadow Massacres, which was a group of people passing through Utah (threatening Utahns as they went) in route to settle in California.

I wish people like you, who are so interested in attacking a religion, would at least get your facts straight instead of making everyone who reads your blog less enlightened.
