Edwards on Al Sharpton's show

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum

John Edwards called into Al Sharpton's radio show this afternoon to speak about last night's debate and his war on poverty, but he took advantage of the opportunity to offer up an apparent dig to Clinton and his other opponents. Edwards called for "big change, bold change" for the country to change a system that is "rigged for big insurance companies, drug companies, and oil companies."

"What possible reason do they have to give up their power? They're not going to give it away. We have to take it away from them," Edwards asserted. "We cannot get bold change by compromising with the people who have the power now. Compromise is not going to get us there, triangulation is not going to get us there, being careful is not going to get us there. We need somebody who's used to fighting these people and beating them and I've been doing it my whole life."

On poverty, Edwards acknowledged it will take some work to make average Americans relate to the issue, but he also said they just need a leader to make it a big issue for them. "I think a lot times, it's sorta out of sight, out of mind and they're not thinking about it," Edwards said. "We make them think about it, put a bright light on the poverty that still exists in this country, which, as you know, we just did for a few days traveling across America. I think it helps."

Sharpton asked Edwards why he would be a good candidate for African Americans when he is running against a woman, an African American, and a "Mexican." A dropped call did not allow Edwards to respond but when Edwards called back into the show, Sharpton rephrased the question without labeling Richardson as a Mexican. Edwards listed the issues that most affect the African American community: poverty, health care coverage, minimum wage, environmental degradation, and the war in Iraq. He asserted he has the "strongest, most aggressive bold plans" for these issues and that he would continue to lead on them as President.

On the debate's format, Edwards was happy. "I think anytime you're answering questions from real people, real voters, as opposed to just journalists, it's a better thing," Edwards said. "I think that's what we got last night. We got some questions you expect to get, some were off the wall, but that's the way voters are. There's nothing wrong with that. That's good."

I'll take Edwards over Hilary in a heartbeat. More real by FAR. Obama might be those once in a lifetime types though. Blessed by the Maker to do special things and born to lead. Of all the candidates, I am completely impressed with Dodd's resume'. Time will tell.
and all 25 listeners to Al Sharpton's radio show agreed with John Edwards.
Edwards is exactly right---just take it away from them. They have no moral conscience and their greed overwhelms any common sense or patriotism.Cannot get their hands out of the piggy cookie jars.
The corporate wealthy are not going to let Edwards give the country back to the people. They will stop him before the nomination or they will stop him from being elected. Or they will stop him after he is elected. But they won't let it get that far. They're not going to let Edwards tear down the pretty little playhouse that Bush built for them. And the same goes  for Obama. But they can't stop the Democrats. They will give us Clinton.
Add to that list the wealthy too. Oh! sorry he is one of them.
I really feel if we could get rid of all of the lobbyists, maybe we would get our government back. I agree that today we have the "best government money can buy" and if any of the democrats would stress this, they would get the average persons vote. Last night the biggest response was when John Edwards talked about getting rid of the special interest.  Iraq may not be that important next fall(some of the troops hopefully will be coming home) but the special interest issue wil still be there.
Save the world. Throw all loser Socialist out of goverment.

The dumbest posts here are the ones that insinuate that Edwards being wealthy/successful disqualifies him from being a Democrat. What a crock? Bill and Hilary are rich because the people elected Bill to the White House twice. Speaking fees run at 100k and up. Where's the hate there? Later.
[Bill and Hilary are rich because the people elected Bill to the White House twice. Speaking fees run at 100k and up. ]

Weren't you at the meeting last night? They have been thrown out of the club too.
And it is true that Edwards has been fighting corporations for the poor for years as an attorney. You can say they won't let us take our country back, but what else is there to do but fight? MLK, Ghandi, Jesus all died fighting for the oppressed. I'm not comparing him to them, but it's nice to see SOMEONE fight for what's right and get to the heart of it without fear. Without that we are lost.
"JE" talks to AS.

Was Edwards sitting on his wifes lap, and did she have her hand inside of the back of his head so she could move his lips when she spoke?
If Edwards was ever nominated, it would become necessary for the Big Multinationals and their lobbyists, lackeys, etc. to hire a hit man and shoot him.  Maybe Cheney would shoot him in the face for free.
Oh yeah man, those damn insurance execs.  Their annual salaries are waaaay out of line UNLIKE those tort lawyers who are good little boys, and only take their fair share.
No Kristian:The dumbest posters are those who think that Sharpton is a swell, rather than the murder-inciting anti-Semite and false accuser that he actually is. [Sharpton,to date, has never apologized or shown remorse for any of his actions]. Great company Edwards is keeping these days. Might as well have attended a Klan BBQ for all his visit is worth.
He just screams slime ball to me. Sorry but he's the epitomy of the shyster lawyer. He could not get his state's vote for the John/John ticket in '04, but still has enough bucks to run by himself again now. Oh yea he's going to be there for me. Not buying it.

The democratic party has been bought and sold, should just call themselves the Socialist Party. Looks just like communism with a smile. We have had enough of the deconstruction of America, the American Identity, and The American Creed.
Live free, live by the rules of law, worship as you will, be responsible for yourself, and work hard, you will get as far as you take yourself.

If he declares I will vote for the only real Pro-American candidate: Fred Thompson.
John Edwards always says a little more THAN HE NEEDS TO.  Example, "strongest, most aggressive bold plans."  Why not just say "boldest set of proposals"?  He has a problem with excess words.

He needs to correct that problem.  You see it all of the time.  He says something, THE CROWD GETS IT AND CLAPS, he repeats it 2 more times using different words and saying the same thing, and the applause fades away because he didn't need to keep driving it hope when they've already got it.

If he slowed down, he might see that they don't need to hear it three times in a row.
William McGuire of UnitedHealth made a $1 TRILLION salary as the head of either a health insurance company or an HMO.

For what?  Because they denied a lot of people health care services in order to raise their profits and look good to shareholders?

John Edwards is right.  People like McGuire need to be slapped in the face with regulation.  After all, "WE, THE PEOPLE" through our elected officials created laws that allowed corporations to exist, and we have the power to REGULATE THEM, and if they refuse to abide by the law, to "DISSOLVE" them.

They have no right to exist if they cheat the public or break the law, just like you have no right to be free if you murder somoene (i.e., violate the law).
I think that according to some on the left, the word "Big" is the nastiest adjective that you can attach to anything:  Big Business = evil;  Big Insurance = evil; Big Oil = Evil; The Big Drug Companies = evil.  They are all out to get us and take over the world.  I work for an insurance company (a small one, so I don't know if that qualifies as BIG insurance) and I consider myself moderately conservative...I guess that makes me about a 9 out of 10 on the old evil scale.
yeah, those damn tort lawyers, let Cheney shoot 'em in the face, like he did with his lawyer buddy.  If you demonize one kind of lawyer (tort) but let other lawyers (corporate, lobbying, etc.) be ok, you are being a hypocrite.  Lawyers are lawyers, and most of them are rich, but they also work very, very hard---all types of lawyers---to get that way. So do doctors.  Are there good and bad types of doctors?
If John Edwards made even one insurance company or drug company pay up he has my vote.  The workers in claims depts of insurance companies are instructed to throw out every 5th claim that comes in (even if it is part of the previously opened/viewed claim), that way the doctors offices have to re-file the claim, the patients do not know if it will get paid or not, and the insurance hoors get to draw interest from a rather large sum of money - thus delivering large bonus & salary compensation to their executives who do not deserve one thin dime.  I would much rather they pay my doctor (he does something for me) than pay the insurance executive my money.  That is one of the big problems with health care today.
Jim - Washington, DC - good point, don't forget Freddie is a lawyer too, not just any old lawyer either - he is a corporate lawyer.  So unless you want more of the same, he is not your guy.
"If John Edwards made even one insurance company or drug company pay up he has my vote."

Edwards and his ilk have put a lot of Pediatricians out of business.  Does that count?
Melody,  Edwards and his ilk only put the ones out of business that needed to be put out of business - how would you like it if someone removed the wrong organ or body part from your child?  Were careless and let that child die?  If they are bad doctors they need to go.  By the way - it is the insurance premiums that put the doctors out of business most of the time, at least that is what they are saying in Tennessee.  Gotta get those malpractice premiums up, cause if they pay out very many times the chairman of the insurance company board just might not get a big fat bonus or salary.  Well, excuse me - Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn if the insurance excs even get paid one penny.  Better yet, send them all to Iraq - lets get at least one honest days work out of them in their lifetime.
"only put the ones out of business that needed to be put out of business"

"big fat bonus or salary"

"don't give a damn if the insurance excs even get paid one penny"

"Iraq"

"one honest days work out of them"

Wow.  Looks like the moveon.org talking points got to you today.  Got them all in one post too.  You get a bonus for that?
"Edwards and his ilk have put a lot of Pediatricians out of business.  Does that count?"

Read FOUR TRIALS. The key in the trials is to prove the corporation or doctor acted improperly which Edwards did. Not all pediatricians act properly so in some cases, children suffer great harm.
JoAnn - you are absolutely correct, wonder who Melody will call when her child is done wrong by the very people who are supposed to take care of them?
Doctors and attorneys are like everyone else, some are good, some are bad.  If suing them to hell and back gets rid of even one bad doctor it is money well spent cause I sure don't want to end up in the bad ones office.  Do you?
Sorry folks, I don't do anything with moveon - never have, probably never will.  But I do work and live in the real world where folks try to survive on less than $50,000 per year for a family of 4.  We are the ones getting left behind.  Children and all.
No UB.  You are the ones who have a constant gripe about everything without offering a workable solution for anything.  You complain, blame, and play the victim card over and over again.  You're paranoid, everyone is 'out-to-get-you', you think any company with more then 20 people in it is evil, and you come off as a shill for the left.  You have no sense of values or self reliance.  You're constantly looking for a government solution to all of life's problems.

In short, if you are not a part of the moveon crowd, you'd easily fit in if you showed up at the meetings.
Meldoy - you sure are a joke, wonder what you would say if I told you my employer has over 20,000 employees - and it is not a county, state, or federal job.  Maybe your just too wealthy to care about anyone else.  Lots of wealthy folks were raised by good honest people and they carried those values with them as they became adults and are very good people, most wealthy folks - especially the get rich quick $50,000 millionair living in a $600,000 house are not.  What happened to you?  Somebody cut off your welfare check?  Actually, I think most small businesses are pretty evil, most of them pay their hemployees little to nothing, prefer illegal labor, and steal from their own kitty to keep from paying the taxes they owe.  I'v worked for large and small business - I prefer non-for profit, they treat you better.
As usual, Melody you are a typical repugnant who knows little or nothing about being a middle class American citizen(about 10 generations worth myself).
Also, Melody, I have never taken a government solution in my life.  Never been on food stamps, never had welfare, never had medicaid or medicare insurance.  I don't think the government should hand out, but it should hand up, and that hand up should not always go to those who are already so wealthy they don't need it or appreciate it.  It's called working for a living -you should try it sometime.  And as it is about time to leave for my shift I think I'll do just that.  So, how are you gonna spend your evening?  That 3 - midnight thing not good enough for you?
UB.  Nothing was said about your personal lot in life, but yet you choose criticize mine.  What's perplexing is you do it without even knowing what it is.  Ad hominem argument I guess.  Nice try, but that doesn't play.

Continuing, you style of discussion does not lend well to a reasonable conversation.  Just looking through your writings gives the impression you are a left-wing-loon.  If thats the type of image you are looking to project, then Mission Accomplished.

My expectation is that you will continue to present left wing dribble rather then any type of valid points.  For example, are trial lawyers important?  Sure, but not to the point where they not only weed out the 1-2% of iffy Peds medical staff, but bring down the entire industry to their massive financial benefit. I.e., Edwards.

You seem to have a personal grudge against anyone making money in an industry that you don't like.  You come with the outrageous statement of insurance companies rejecting every 5th claim.  You can't pull stuff out of the air, or where ever you pull it from, and expect any one to take you the least bit serious.  In short you look like a raving lunatic playing to the lefty crowd when you make claims like that.

The last responses you've made were better written, which means you have some kind of brain.  Rather then ranting and raving, which maybe you get some sick pleasure from, maybe you could tyr and be more reasonable and forthcoming.
UB - ahh - you're a baiter.

Carry on.

And, I hope you weren't late for work.
soak the rich and give it back to the working class, john edwards you got my vote
You know it's very funny that anyone of color would today continue to vote for any democrat especially if you live in any inna city in America.  What you see is controlled by Democrat city councils, democrat mayors, democrat school boards, democrat governors and most everything else, however my own danm black folks keep voting for these idiots because they don't seem to see nor understand what is around them are the same old things they're parents were complaining about and now they are and guess who they voted for.  Malcom X was right we have been bamboozled.  Open your eyes and demand more not just rhetoric cause remember dems talk a good game to blacks but never ever ever come through. I have proof!!, If you black and in a inna city you do too!!!
"how would you like it if someone removed the wrong organ or body part from your child?  Were careless and let that child die?"
Actually... Most of the pediatricians and OB's who get sued are in court (or settle) because parents can't accept that they could give birth to a child who isn't perfect and lawyers take advantage of that.  Elect John Edwards and we'll have a whole gosh-darn country of whiners and 'it's not my faulter's quick as a wink. You just wait and see.
Ahh Sharpton... now THERE's a race-baiter if I ever saw one. Why do you 'African-Americans' listen to that man anyway? And why do you think he has your best interests at heart?
