BREAKING NEWS
From NBC's Andrea Mitchell
Sen. Obama has ESCALATED his criticism of Hillary Clinton -- taking it to political defcon three -- in an exclusive on-camera interview with NBC News.

It is a lot tougher than what he said in the debate -- or in the Iowa newspaper interview yesterday.

During a stakeout outside his senate office, Obama said in part:

"I think what is irresponsible and naive is to have authorized a war without asking how we were going to get out -- and you know I think Senator Clinton hasn’t fully answered that issue.

"The general principle that I was laying out is that we should not be afraid as America to meet with anybody.

"Now, they may not like what we want to hear -- so if I’m talking to the President of Iran, I’m going to inform him that Israel is our stalwart ally, and we are going to do what's necessary to protect them -- that we will not accept a nuclear bomb in Iran, but that doesn’t mean we can’t say that face to face. And obviously, the diplomatic spadework has to be done ahead of time.

"The notion that I was somehow going to be inviting them over for tea next week without having initial envoys meet is ridiculous.

"But the general principle is one that I think Senator Clinton is wrong on -- and that is if we are laying out preconditions that prevents us from speaking frankly to these folks, then we are continuing with Bush-Cheney policies, and I am not interested in continuing that.

"I know that she has said in the past that we have to talk to our enemies -- well that’s what this is about. And if we say that we will not talk to them unless they meet a series of preconditions, then that’s the same position that Bush and Cheney have maintained over the last six years, and it has made us less safe. And that’s what I think is going to be a significant part of this debate in 2008.

"We responded to her in this situation, and I think there is a genuine difference, if there isn’t a difference, then Senator Clinton should explain it. I think that we should talk to everybody.

"That ultimately is what’s going to create the environment in which we can reduce some of the threat levels we are facing. To fail to do that is the same conventional Washington thinking that led many including Senator Clinton to go ahead with the war without having asked adequate questions."

****UPDATE**** Clinton supporters respond to Obama's new criticism by pointing out that Clinton has been very critical of the Bush's Administration policies on diplomacy. Also, her response at the debate -- and in yesterday's skirmish -- was that it doesn't make any sense to pursue vigorous diplomacy without getting the most of it. You just can't promise to meet with world leaders, they say, without conditions.

*** SECOND UPDATE *** The Clinton campaign has now released this statement from Richard Holbrooke, who served as UN ambassador in Bill Clinton's administration: "As she has said many times, Senator Clinton believes we need to engage in vigorous diplomacy after the cowboy approach of the Bush years. She has said she would initiate serious, responsible dialogue with nations with whom we don’t agree in order to further the national security interest of the United States. But she is right not to risk the prestige of the presidency by unconditionally committing to meet with leaders of adversarial nations."

Go Obama go!! It's about time that he shows that he's not afraid of the Clintons!!!
Wow, excellent response Senator.  I think Clinton's attempt to try to discredit Obama at this early stage is really starting to backfire.
Wow,
This is what I have been waiting for from Obama. In my view, Obama is the best thing to happen to American politics in a long time.
I dont think it is compulsory that Obama wins the democratic nomination but I think we as Americans must ask this shit***ds who took us to Iraq some tough questions.
I be coming home to Iowa to vote for ya, Obama
What say you Hillary?  Now I know the GOP will win the White House in 08.
Awesome; Obama nails it.

Cynicallary Clinton is in trouble.
This was defcon 3? My, you pundit-types get excited easily.
Smoke coming out of the Senate buildings.  I figured both Hillary and Obama were getting fired up but....
Has Hillary clarified what she meant by preconditions?  Perhaps all she meant by that was sending envoys and pursuing lower level diplomacy first.  In which case, his clarification does nothing more than equalize their positions on this issue.

The difference, as Albright put it, is in the nuances.  No one is suggesting that Obama would be inviting these leaders to tea in the Rose Garden his first month in office.  But it is important that a foundation is first laid, and the response that he is now giving indicates that he is aware of that.

I sincerely hope that everyone who was touting him yesterday for wanting to meet with the dictators himself rather than have lower level diplomats lay the foundation blasts Obama as much as they blasted Hillary.  So much for that big change, huh?
An OUTSTANDING response from Senator Obama, and another demonstration of why his brand of leadership is exactly what the USA needs desperately.
At last, Obama is starting to counterpunch.  Now, if he can just learn to give straight answers in the debates, he can beat her.
Sounded very Presidential.  A true leader.  We need a President who is able to ask the tough questions and make decisions, not more of the same.
I think Media was trying to put Hillary Clinton on a pedestal and Obama has put the media in it's place :-)
I am very impressed with Obama's frankness and sincerity. I'm rooting for him from Jamaica and I hope that the American people will give him a chance !!!
Go get'em Obama!
Obama's approach to the world political stage is coarse and oversimplified.
Obama has to do this...otherwise he is concedes to Clinton. Clinton in that part is tough b/c she does not ignore a slight unlike Kerry.
OBAMA! I have you your BACKA !!! Now we are hearing what we wanted to hear when we sent you our hard earn cash. Bush/Clinton same wolf in a A** or Sheep clothing. I am working Georgia for you big man. If you need me in SC just holla.
For the Clintons it depends on what "is," "is."

Juanita Broaddrick, who appeared on "Dateline NBC" in January 1999 to accuse then-President Bill Clinton of raping her in Arkansas back in 1978, is supporting the most serious rival to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Democratic presidential contest.

According to a money-in-politics database at www.opensecrets.org, which is operated by the Center for Responsive Politics, Ms. Broaddrick has contributed $450 so far this year to Illinois Sen. Barack Obama.

I can't believe anyone who would support any freshman Senator..who really thinks he can make a difference in the Middle East..by inviting himself over there..to make a fool out of all of us..and especially Obama!! He has no clout with other countries head of government! Of course they would agree to meet him..and show the world that the US has sunk to new lows sending a kid to do a mans job.
Hey..let's just pull out of Iraq....and watch the countries people get slaughtered by the thousands...!!
Sorry but I have to go with Hillary in that Obama is NOT seasoned enough to be President of the United States.  He will be good at shaking things up but he's not our guy.  Go HILLARY!
In 1961 a Young Democrat said that the United States would never negotiate out of fear now would we fear to negotiate.  In 2007 a youg Democrat states the he does not fear to negotiate and the old folks are calling him irresponsible.
Hillary she is so ninties!
Sounds Presidental..Only two days late!  And I guess it's easy to criticize a vote on a war when you were in the Illinois Legislature not forced to make the tough decisions.  But I guess we can deal with another rookie learning on the job, it seems to have worked well for the last 7 years.
Doesn't look like Hillary wants to engage!!!!  She knew it was a weak agruement to begin with and was hoping that Obama would let it pass.  Rookie misstake number #3 Hillary.  For a "SEASONED PROFESSIONAL'" YOU ARE BATTING 200 LATELY.

If you think you were right, BACK IT UP in person, ENGAGE.  You OPEN THE DOOR.  See what kind happen when you let your temper get the best of you.
Precisely. Hilary sounds like more of the same.  We need to change.
Obama's Answer is very well reasoned and perfectly on point.  I don't see a hint of tough talk in it.  Obama is laying out his position without nastiness.  HE actually shows respect for her.  So isn't this a refreshing  change in politics.  I agree - Go, Obama  Go !    What makes journalists think this is an escalation toward a fight?  Oh.... yeah....    a cheesy attempt to market their wares.
Billary's comments only reaffirm what Obama is criticizing them for. Why should there be "conditions"? This is why we are viewed so unfavorably throughout the world - because we think we are better than everyone else. Go Obama!
Yes Obama needs more substance and more diffrentiation from Hilary. he also needs to be careful and not attack too boldly. Hillary will not be intimidated!
I don't know, maybe he sounds different to other peoples' ears but, for me, the irony is that Obama just isn't well-spoken!

Sorry Obama fans - he was brash and irresponsible.  Comments like his may fuel a feeding frenzy with the media and his fans, but he is showing me over and over he is not ready for prime time.
America has lost the ability to talk. Gun boat diplomacy does not get the job done. This was proven by Nixon and Regan
You know what they say when you underestimate people.  Obama is not the one to underestimate.
I'm a Republican and I admit I'm looking closely at the Dems for my possible vote this time. Obama handled this perfectly.  He tied Clinton's behavior to what we are trying to get away from, that is, Bush diplomacy (an oxymoron).  Score one for Obama.
Please, we do not need another administration with the same intimidated by the enemey so I won't talk to them theme. Hillary is so insecure she wouldn't step into a pool with out someone checking out for her first.

Great response back Obama, you are the real winner, and will be in 2008 for the White House.
Theresa
It's true, Obama is young and naive (as was John F. Kennedy in 1960). Still, how can anyone like Hilary? She is *exactly* the type of cold, calculating politician who makes most of us cynical of cold, calculating politicians, regardless of the politician's sex, race or political affiliation. If the primary comes down to Obama or Clinton, Obama gets my vote.
Wow. Nice to see he keeps pace with his ideals to change the way Washington does business. Time to get the old cronies out of power and get someone with real diplomacy in mind.
How will any democrat make headway with Iran without the support of half the country? You didn't stand with us. Why should we help you?
She made a bad move - the naivety is on Sen. Clinton's part to think the United States President is so omnipotent as not to speak with other world leaders.  It's that mind concept that's gotten us in the bad eye of a good portion of the world.  I'm an Army veteran, and love my country - but this political elitist crap has got to stop...and I feel confident it will with Sen. Obama.
Hillary hasn't had a debate yet.  Her day is coming.
I think Obama nailed it on Monday night.  To refuse to even consider meeting with our enemies is completely ridiculous.  The question was "would you be willing" to meet in the first year, and Obama said he's willing and Hillary said she wasn't.  That shows me two things, Obama is ready for the job, and not afraid to do it.

I think Obama nailed it and I can't wait to see how he turns things around on Clinton in the next few months. I can only hope that the uneducated realize how great Obama will be for our country.
I see no reason at all why a President should not meet with leaders throughout the world. A sign of a positive gesture. you are headed down a great road and stand up to her and make her answer the questions, which she continues to avoid most of the time.
Sen Obama is good to be critcal of of Senator Clinton, but my question is if he was so certain that the war was a bad choice then why didn't he do something about it, why didn't he try to open the eyes of those that voted to give permission to go to war if needed. My second questions is what information did he have and where did he get it that convinced him that the war was a bad choice? I wish he could move on pass who did what and discuss what he can and will do for this country. I don't find Hilary is irresponsible or naive, she didn't have a crystal ball to tell her what Bush was going to do, maybe Obama should have loaned her his crystal ball since he know before anyone that going into Iraq was bad. I think it is very important to pre think  and have a plan when dealing with those from other countries
I don't know why people are getting so pumped up about Obama.  He has virtually no experience.  For me he is basically just an invention of the media.  If he is the best thing to come around in American Politics in a long time then this country is really in trouble!?

Time for a change - he seems like the biggest one available.  If the vote were today...  mine would be for Obama.  I've gotten on the "anyone but Hillary" bandwagon.
Bottom line - no BILLARY in the White house - period. If she is elected, that's 28 years of the same 2 families (with questionable pasts - both of them) running our country. Hillary feels entitled because she's the first "woman" running for president. Obama is right in blasting her - and he won't be the last.
I don't like Hillary but Obama blew it in the debate. If he has to explain himself after, he didn't get it in the first place. Hillary's answer was the more mature and experienced answer. She doesn't rush into anything. If Obama learns from her and moves on he might make it but he does lack the experience.
Obama needs to be Jimmy Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. And Jimmy Stewart didnt back down when somebody attacked him and Obama needs to show that same back bone.

Clinton has a terrible non existant personality and shell say absolutely anything to get elected. In the past 5 months I have seen her take almost 4 different positions on the Iraq war. Obama is the only one who can bring her down and he has to do so by showing teeth. Defending yourself from negative politics isnt negatively politicking, Obama needs to hit back and hit back hard and never stop hitting till January of 08.
